Osvícenství jako počátek národního obrození? / Enlightenment as the Beginning of National Revival?

Fapšo, Marek January 2019 (has links)
Marek FAPŠO, Enlightenment as the Origin of National Revival?, dissertaion, Institute of Czech History, Charles University, Prague 2019 Dissertation aims a goal to catch an age between 1760-1790, which is usually in the Bohemian Lands taken as the so called beginning of the National Revival. Methodologically the dissertation stands upon tradition of Michel Foucault's research and environmental history. Firstly, it brings synchronic connections of phenomena instead of searching for diachronic predecessors and followers of so called Enlightenment. Secondly, the dissertation brings up the reflections of nature, landscape and environment, which became an important issue in the second half of the 18th century. One of the leitmotivs is the relationship between usually disconnected realms of natural and human sciences. The work is divided into three main parts. The first one is focused on reflections of languages, their natural background and classifications related to Carl Linne's taxonomy. Then the second deals with long forgotten concept of Naturgeschichte forging together natural and historical perspective. A topic is also devoted to new-born fields of expertise - archaeology and critical historiography - that have a special relation to landscape as well. In the last part the notion of nature and...

Senekovy tragédie a jejich recepce v latinském školském jezuitském dramatu české provincie v 17. a 18. století (1623-1773) / Seneca's Tragedies and their Reception in the Jesuit School Theatre of the Bohemian Province in the 17th and 18th Centuries (1623-1773)

Popelková, Eva January 2019 (has links)
Seneca's Tragedies and their Reception in the Jesuit School Theatre of the Bohemian Province in the 17th and 18th Centuries (1623-1773) Eva Popelková Abstract The study of the reception of Seneca's tragedies in the Jesuit School theatre in the Bohemian province is focused on three aspects: the description of the mechanism and the expression of passions; the pedagogical issue linked to the figure of a tyrant, with an emphasis on female characters; and the image of pagan gods. The research is based on a comparison of Senecan tragedies and school plays from the Society of Jesus. The corpus consists of three parts: the printed plays of Carolus Kolczawa; the plays of Arnoldus Engel, both staged and intended for publication; and the plays devoted to John of Nepomuk, the emblematic saint of the Czech baroque period, which were not to be published. The analyses are preceded by an overview of the Senecan reception in the Early Modern Europe, the presentation of the Jesuit context and the studied corpus. Keywords Seneca, reception, Jesuit theatre, School theatre, Neo-Latin literature, Bohemian province, 17th century, 18th century

Sureau dit Blondin, Jean-Philippe 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis proposes to analyze the French representations of the role of women in the Wendat cerermonial universe at the time of New France. Divided into two parts, it first explores the representations of women in France’s Ancien Régime period, focusing on symbolic represen-tations on the one hand and, on the other hand, on the social perceptions of Ancien Régime women. To do this, we consult a vast repertoire of works of socioreligious history which makes it possible to penetrate the French episteme of Ancien Régime regarding the representation of women. The second part is devoted to the ethno-historical analysis of French representations of the role of women in the Wendat ceremonial universe during the New France era. All the French writings constituting Franco-Native contact literature are used to study these representations of rituals re-lated to “fertility”, “healing” and finally “funeral”. In the end, the analysis reveals that, while French observers attest to the “complementary” and “egalitarian” aspect of the gendered interac-tional dynamics governing the Wendat ceremonial universe, they were unable to capture the full extent and value of integration because they assessed the value of ceremonial wendat behaviors according to their degree of adequacy or inadequacy to the project of French colonization and Christian evangelization.

Lussier, Anne Marie 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis, which deals with the interweaving of philosophy and literature in the work of French Enlightenment thinkers, seeks to shed light on Denis Diderot’s unique contributions to philosophical reflection on the novel, as well as to the exploration of the literary resources that make it possible to delve into philosophical issues through the novel. Beginning with an examination of Diderot’s explicit theories about writing narrative fiction, it argues that the outgrowth of his materialism and the disenchantment following his attempts at theatre reform upended the aesthetic and moral basis for the initial normative framework underpinning his analysis of how fiction is ideally written and received. It goes on to examine how Diderot, as a novelist, undertook an innovative and fruitful exploration of the unsuspected philosophical resources that narrative fiction offers. The final sections are devoted to a close reading of Jacques the Fatalist and His Master, beginning with an attempt to identify the main resources it deploys to train more lucid and critical readers of fiction. The thesis then seeks to show how this knowledge base, if successfully transmitted, ultimately leads the reader to engage in a genuine dialogue with the work, both in terms of the metaphysical and ontological issues raised by Jacques’ “fatalism” and the moral issues that ensue.

The Essercizii musici: A Study of the Late Baroque Sonata

Volcansek, Frederick Wallace 05 1900 (has links)
Telemann's Essercizii musici is a seminal publication of the 1730's representative of the state of the sonata in Germany at that time. Telemann's music has been largely viewed in negative terms, presumably because of its lack of originality, with the result that the collection's content has been treated in a perfunctory manner. This thesis presents a reappraisal of the Essercizii musici based on criteria presented in Quantz's Versuch. A major source of the period, the Versuch provides an analytical framework for a deeper understanding of the sonatas that comprise Telemann's last publication. A comparison of contemporary publications of similarly titled collections establishes an historical framework for assessing the importance of the Essercizii musici as part of a tradition of publications with didactic objectives that may be traced to the late 17th century.

The Problematic British Romantic Hero(ine): the Giaour, Mathilda, and Evelina

Poston, Craig A. (Craig Alan) 05 1900 (has links)
Romantic heroes are questers, according to Harold Bloom and Northrop Frye. Whether employing physical strength or relying on the power of the mind, the traditional Romantic hero invokes questing for some sense of self. Chapter 1 considers this hero-type, but is concerned with defining a non-questing British Romantic hero. The Romantic hero's identity is problematic and established through contrasting narrative versions of the hero. This paper's argument lies in the "inconclusiveness" of the Romantic experience perceived in writings throughout the Romantic period. Romantic inconclusiveness can be found not only in the structure and syntax of the works but in the person with whom the reader is meant to identify or sympathize, the hero(ine). Chapter 2 explores Byron's aesthetics of literature equivocation in The Giaour. This tale is a consciously imbricated text, and Byron's letters show a purposeful complication of the poet's authority concerning the origins of this Turkish Tale. The traditional "Byronic hero," a gloomy, guilt-ridden protagonist, is considered in Chapter 3. Byron's contemporary readers and reviewers were quick to pick up on this aspect of his verse tales, finding in the Giaour, Selim, Conrad, and Lara characteristics of Childe Harold. Yet, Byron's Turkish Tales also reveal a very different and more sentimental hero. Byron seems to play off the reader's expectations of the "Byronic hero" with an ambiguous hero whose character reflects the Romantic aesthetic of indeterminacy. Through the accretive structure of The Giaour, Byron creates a hero of competing component characteristics, a focus he also gives to his heroines. Chapters 4 and 5 address works that are traditionally considered eighteenth-century sentimental novels. Mathilda and Evelina, both epistolary works, present their heroines as worldly innocents who are beset by aggressive males. Yet their subtext suggests that these girls aggressively maneuver the men in their lives. Mathilda and Evelina create a tension between the expected and the radical to energize the reader's imagination.

Te Deum: Für Sopran, Alt, Tenor, Baß, Chor, 2 Oboen, 2 Hörner, 2 Trompeten, Pauken, Streicher und Orgel, 1769: Partitur

Naumann, Johann Gottlieb 09 March 2018 (has links)
