The socio-cultural context of the first readers of the Gospel of Matthew with reference to Matthew 5: 17 to 6:18

Thomas, Arieshad Patrick 22 August 2012 (has links)
M.A. / This script is all about interpreting and preaching that which happened and was taught in Palestine during the first century A.D. The emphasis is not so much, however, on what happened politically, but on what the socio-cultural circumstances were that surrounded those incidences. It must be noted that the political happenings had a tremendous influence upon the way people living in that age viewed their world and conducted their affairs with others around them. Their world was one that was wrought with political strife and continuous wars that ravaged the countryside and impoverished its inhabitants. This impoverishment led to resentment and deep hatred of the invaders that, in turn, led to constant uprisings against those same people. This trend had continued for many generations until the Romans came and brought some semblance of peace and prosperity to the region. However, that prosperity was not available to the ordinary man in the street. With the supposed prosperity, came a decline in morals that went dead against the grain of the culture of the Jews in particular. They reacted to this by withdrawing from society, and taking refuge in a strict interpretation of the Law of Moses. However, this was the reaction of the Scribes and Pharisees and not the populace who generally found the demands placed upon them too strict. Despite all this, social relationships were conducted at ordinary levels which accounted for some semblance of normality. and their group-orientated personalities and collective values bound them into a unit. Then came Jesus of Nazareth who captured the imaginations of many who left what little they had and followed him around the country as he taught a radically different way of dealing with existing pressures under the power of the God of Israel. However, many others believed that he was no more than a charlatan bent on organizing a revolt against the Roman authorities. Unfortunately the presentation of Jesus by his followers was based on his theological significance rather that on who he was as person living in first century Palestine, leaving no concrete evidence pointing to his humanity. The movement that developed after his death was viewed with as much suspicion as Jesus himself was, although they were really only concerned with the restoration of Israel's true worship of God. Matthew, or Levi, the tax collector was one of those who left what he was doing to follow Jesus and it is to him that authorship of the Gospel of Matthew is ascribed. It is contended that he wrote to present Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah to the Jews. How much of an influence, however, his culture and circumstances had on his writings is a matter of considerable debate as he only recorded his version of Jesus' teachings some thirty years after his (Jesus') death. The question of relevance is one that of necessity, has to be addressed. A paper of this nature would be incomplete if it was not done. It is a foregone fact that modem societies have morals exactly as low as those in first century Palestine and that there too, exists the need to remind people that there are still standards that do not conform to those prescribed by Godless men and women. But there is a great gulf between ourselves and Matthew and his audience. This gulf spans not only time, but culture as well. To begin with, the author wrote within the confines of his own cultural context, to a specific group of people with the intention of conveying a specific message to them. We stand outside of this work: to be exact, two thousand years outside of it. Our culture is not the same as theirs. So cannot hope to ever take what Matthew wrote and transpose it directly onto our own societies; we are too conditioned by our own cultural influences to do that responsibly. If, on the other hand, we sincerely wish to be responsible in our interpretation and application of the Word, we have to understand Matthew's and his audiences' context, keep it in mind all the time, and seriously endeavor to suspend our own prejudices and presuppositions in favour of letting the text "speak for itself'.

Biblické motivy v textech české pop music 60. a 70. let dvacátého století / Biblical motives in Czech pop music lyrics of 60s and 70s of the twentieth century

Makovcová Demartini, Lenka January 2013 (has links)
The thesis "Biblical motifs in Czech pop music of the 1960s and the 1970s of the twentieth century: The function and using of biblical motifs for pop music lyrics with the original biblical background and message" introduces the academic framework of the topic within the first chapter: the definition of the terms, the criteria and method for selecting the motifs and lyrics used. Then, the position of Czech pop music in the cultural and political context of the period is explained, which is a relevant part of the topic itself. Also an outline of the academic reflection of the related topic is referred to as well as the function of biblical motifs in other styles of music (rock, folk and underground music) with the emphasis on the projection of the stylistic differences into using these topics for the lyrics. The following four chapters are probes into the pop music and biblical motifs issue. They are meant as the reflection of the the inner dynamics of the genre as well: in the second and third chapters the selected biblical motifs (general motifs, prayers, biblicisms and biblical characters) are enlisted and the anylysis of their funcion and using for various lyrics is provided in comparison with their biblical message and introducing the original loci in the B ible. The fourth chapter is focused on...

Nezletilé matky rodičovské generace 70. a 80. let. / Underage mothers of parental generation of 70th and 80th

Pitrová, Lenka January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is examines women who in the 70s or 80s become underage mothers. It tries to map out how these women perceive their life. It also investigates how negative assumptions about underage mothers agree or disagree with the specimen. First there is processed topic of underage mothers and their various aspects. It introduces the views of domestic and foreign authors on these girls. These views predicts a bleak and unsuccessful life to those girls. Another part presents era of socialism, which surveyed women grew up and became pregnant in. Next part describes the research methodology. For this thesis the qualitative research was chosen, specifically biographical interviews. The last part of the analysis is devoted to the research and specific findings. It introduces the topics that women talked about and which are very important to them. Research shows that the former young mothers perceive and evaluate their lives mostly positively. When comparing expert views on teenage mothers with the lives of these women, it is clear that the gloomy predictions of the authors didn't come true and women don't live in poverty and sadness. Conversely they happily spend time with their children and partners.

Dvougenerační dům na Slovensku / Two-generation housing in Slovakia

Šebová, Petra January 2018 (has links)
The proposal deals with the topic of living in multi-generational family houses built in Slovakia in the 1970’s. Despite the former ability of the owners to adapt the original architects’ plan towards their own preferences, nowadays they feel discomfort using the house. The image of multi-generational usage of the house turned out to be false over the time. Currently the houses are only partially inhabited and the demanding maintenance of the large house is increasingly difficult for its original inhabitants, who are usually already retired. The project suggests transformation of the large family houses into flats while at the same time presents an alternative to the development of municipal housing in the village, currently planned by local authorities.

Den uppdaterade 70-talsvillan / The Updated 70s Villa

Ekstrand Giljarås, Alexandra January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis, I investigate how a period-typical serial house from the 1970s can be transformed, through renovation, to possess more architectural qualities and timeless character. My opinion is that the combination can be obtained by recreating architectural features from the 1970s together with contemporary solutions, materials and spatial organization. In order to carry out my study, I have conducted three case studies where I have started from a main object, the serial house villa Åhus, as well as two reference objects, villa Färlöv and villa Hässleholm, where the two latter are architect-designed villas which I consider having good architectural qualities. The three villas are all from the 1970s, villa Åhus and villa Färlöv are located in Kristianstad municipality and villa Hässleholm is located in the neighboring municipality, these parameters have been important to me as nearby areas and the same time period make the comparison more just. For the study to not be subjective with only my personal opinions about good architecture, I have chosen to analyze the three villas using a qualitative research theory within the subject. The theory is based on seven characteristic fields that describe immeasurable architectural values. I have also had the opportunity to visit all the villas and have photographs and building permit documents at my disposal, which has been a great asset. A qualitative semi-structured interview with one of the owners of the main object has also been carried out and has been very helpful as I have gained a different understanding of the home, such as the residents' experience of the home with its positive and negative aspects. The research theory together with the analyzes of the three case studies is then used to discuss various design proposals in the design process for how villa Åhus can be transformed. The design process will culminate in a proposal for how the villa could be designed to incorporate more evident architectural qualities, and combine the preservation and recreation of certain character traits from the 1970s together with more contemporary choices, which will take the villa into the 2020s without losing the original character too much. Simply put, the villa in a new costume.

Coexistence of Wireless Systems for Spectrum Sharing

Kim, Seungmo 28 July 2017 (has links)
Sharing a band of frequencies in the radio spectrum among multiple wireless systems has emerged as a viable solution for alleviating the severe capacity crunch in next-generation wireless mobile networks such as 5th generation mobile networks (5G). Spectrum sharing can be achieved by enabling multiple wireless systems to coexist in a single spectrum band. In this dissertation, we discuss the following coexistence problems in spectrum bands that have recently been raising notable research interest: 5G and Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) at 27.5-28.35 GHz (28 GHz); 5G and Fixed Service (FS) at 71-76 GHz (70 GHz); vehicular communications and Wi-Fi at 5.85-5.925 GHz (5.9 GHz); and mobile broadband communications and radar at 3.55-3.7 GHz (3.5 GHz). The results presented in each of the aforementioned parts show comprehensively that the coexistence methods help achieve spectrum sharing in each of the bands, and therefore contribute to achieve appreciable increase of bandwidth efficiency. The proposed techniques can contribute to making spectrum sharing a viable solution for the ever evolving capacity demands in the wireless communications landscape. / Ph. D.

Režijní tvorba Miroslava Macháčka v Národním divadle v 70. a 80. letech / Miroslav Macháček's Stage Work at the National Theater in the 70's and 80's

Černá, Johana January 2014 (has links)
The master thesis attempts to characterise the staging poetics of Miroslav Macháček, one of the most remarkable Czech theatre directors of the second half of the 20th century. Based on his stage works in the 70's and 80's at the National Theater, the author of this thesis attempts to make a reconstruction of all his productions of that period; and thus the detailed analysis of the more significant productions characteristic to the director's style is provided. In order to define the stagings, the author bases her research upon archival theater reviews and studies in particular periodicals, photographical materials from the productions and in some cases also audiovisual recordings. Furthermore, other sources include the director's correspondence, notes about his work and the memories of his contemporary witnesses. The thesis also focuses on the historical context and the conditions at the National Theater of that particular time, which influenced Macháček's activity there.
