[en] KANGAROO GENERATION: THE PROLONGATION OF FAMILY LIFE / [pt] GERAÇÃO CANGURU: O PROLONGAMENTO DA CONVIVÊNCIA FAMILIAR

CELIA REGINA HENRIQUES 28 July 2004 (has links)
[en] This thesis is an attempt to account for the phenomenon referred to by the media as the kangaroo generation in terms of the interrelations between the family sphere and the contemporary social context, on the basis of the belief that it is in this interaction that it is configured. The phenomenon in question is the fact that many young adults choose to continue living with their parents even though they already lead independent lives outside the home. The delaying of the departure from the family reflects a constellation of intrafamilial factors - ambivalence towards departure and the loss of achieved roles - and extrafamilial ones, arising from a social context sharply marked by instability and uncertainty. The field study involved seven middle-class families in Rio de Janeiro, seven parental couples and eight children aged 26 or older. The object of the research was to analyze the ways how families see this pattern of coexistence, as well as to bring out the agreements settled on by family members in order to extend in time their assigned roles.

Migratory trajectories among street vendors in urban South Africa

Cyprian, Lapah Yota January 2010 (has links)
Magister Philosophiae - MPhil / This study investigates ways in which migratory trajectories relate to the gradual insertion and eventual integration of immigrants. It therefore shows the contribution of social capital in the migration and insertion into the entrepreneurial city of the host country. The focus of the study is on immigrants of African origin. It is hypothesized that immigrants of different nationalities in South Africa use particular assets to engage in street vending as a way of insertion into their new environment. Data were obtained through a survey of two hundred and eight (208) respondents conveniently selected. The survey was carried out in five suburbs of Cape Town and as well as at some major road junctions where these vendors are found. The Statistical package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The results showed that nationality was an important determinant of the migratory trajectories of immigrant vendors.Migration has been on the increase with the improvement in technology and globalization. In the same light, migration into South African cities mainly from the rest of Africa and Asia took an upward trend especially after the fall of Apartheid Regime and the advent of democracy in the nineties. Street vendors form part of these immigrants in South Africa. Many of them especially from other African countries find it a suitable means of survival. Faced with the difficulty of getting jobs in South Africa, immigrants resort to informal trading as a starting point for survival. They may change to other activities depending on certain variables like duration of stay, level of education, age, sex, marital status, social capital and networks. Coming from different socioeconomic, cultural and political backgrounds, these immigrants resort to different ways of migrating and forms of adaptation aimed at sustaining their livelihood in their new environments. Most studies in the field of migration and entrepreneurship focus on remittances by the migrants as well as their impact on both their place of departure and on the place of destination. Little attention is paid to the way they migrate and how they insert themselves in the entrepreneurial city.

Analysis of traffic patterns for large scale outdoor events : A case study of Vasaloppet ski event

Ahmadi, Parisa January 2012 (has links)
Vasaloppet is a cross country ski event which has been held in Sweden for about 50 years. Now more than 50,000 people of different ages participate in various cross country ski races during the Vasaloppet winter week in Dalarna County. This increasing demand needs good traffic and transportation planning to avoid congestion and provide safe, on time and environmentally friendly transportation for participants and visitors to the area. The key for a good event traffic planning is reliable and up-to-date traffic data which is not available for the Vasaloppet winter week. This study is an attempt to collect traffic data in order to find the movement patterns in the area and estimate origin-destination matrices for the main event of Vasaloppet week. Based on resources and time limitation it was decided to use a web-base d participants’ survey in order to collect traffic data. The link to the survey was sent to email address of a sample of 5000 participants. About 64% of the participants drove from their home town to the area and about 31 percent travelled by bus. Train and airplane have a very small share in travel mode to the area. Malungsälen, Mora and Älvdalen are three municipalities in Dalarna County with the highest share in accommodating participants. On the day of the race, bus and car have approximately the same share in travel mode with 45% and 47% respectively.

Incorporation of Departure Time Choice in a Mesoscopic Transportation Model for Stockholm

Kristoffersson, Ida January 2009 (has links)
Travel demand management policies such as congestion charges encourage car-users to change among other things route, mode and departure time. Departure time may be especially affected by time-varying charges, since car-users can avoid high peak hour charges by travelling earlier or later, so called peak spreading effects. Conventional transport models do not include departure time choice as a response. For evaluation of time-varying congestion charges departure time choice is essential. In this thesis a transport model called SILVESTER is implemented for Stockholm. It includes departure time, mode and route choice. Morning trips, commuting as well as other trips, are modelled and time is discretized into fifteen-minute time periods. This way peak spreading effects can be analysed. The implementation is made around an existing route choice model called CONTRAM, for which a Stockholm network already exists. The CONTRAM network has been in use for a long time in Stockholm and an origin-destination matrix calibrated against local traffic counts and travel times guarantee local credibility. On the demand side, an earlier developed departure time and mode choice model of mixed logit type is used. It was estimated on CONTRAM travel times to be consistent with the route choice model. The behavioural response under time-varying congestion charges was estimated from a hypothetical study conducted in Stockholm. Paper I describes the implementation of SILVESTER. The paper shows model structure, how model run time was reduced and tests of convergence. As regards run time, a 75% cut down was achieved by reducing the number of origin-destination pairs while not changing travel time and distance distributions too much. In Paper II car-users underlying preferred departure times are derived using a method called reverse engineering. This method derives preferred departure times that reproduce as well as possible the observed travel pattern of the base year. Reverse engineering has previously only been used on small example road networks. Paper II shows that application of reverse engineering to a real-life road network is possible and gives reasonable results. /
QC 20170222
/ Silvester

En gång officer - alltid officer : En studie om reengagering av yrkesofficerare i Försvarsmakten

Westin, Mikael, Gärdström, Mikael January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to create an understanding of how, military officer´s departing, possibilities for re-engagement could be strengthened. Today’s labor market is incused by high movement of personnel between organizations and by high individual demands on potentiality and meaningfulness with employment. If an organization manages to adapt to these circumstances it could enjoy a refund in new knowledge and dedication that comes with a re-engagement. With a re-engagement we refer to a former military officer who, now working outside the Armed Forces returns to continuous service, international service or occasional service. The results of the study show that validating civil competence, making available jobs visible and searchable, and striving for a positive departure when quitting, increases the possibilities for a re-engagement. When offered an opportunity to serve as an officer in the reserve and given access to an alumni network when quitting, possibilities for a re-engagement increases further. Additional factors that strengthen possibilities are personal and dynamic working relations and personally addressed job offers. Finally, but not least, the strong sense of identity that is inherent with military officers is a fundamental and attractive factor: Once an officer – always an officer! This qualitative, interview based and inductive study contributes to increased knowledge on factors that have an impact on re-engagement in a military context. The study further increases understanding of cultural ties between an organization and individuals and how these ties may affect a person's choice to return to a former employer.

A Novel Lightweight Lane Departure Warning System Based on Computer Vision for Improving Road Safety

Chen, Yue 14 May 2021 (has links)
With the rapid improvement of the Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS), autonomous driving has become one of the most common hot topics in recent years. While driving, many technologies related to autonomous driving choose to use the sensors installed on the vehicle to collect the information of road status and the environment outside. This aims to warn the driver to perceive the potential danger in the fastest time, which has become the focus of autonomous driving in recent years. Although autonomous driving brings plenty of conveniences to people, the safety of it is still facing difficulties. During driving, even the experienced driver can not guarantee focus on the status of the road all the time. Thus, lane departure warning system (LDWS) becomes developed. The purpose of LDWS is to determine whether the vehicle is in the safe driving area. If the vehicle is out of this area, LDWS will detect it and alert the driver by the sensors, such as sound and vibration, in order to make the driver back to the safe driving area. This thesis proposes a novel lightweight LDWS model LEHA, which divides the entire LDWS into three stages: image preprocessing, lane detection, and lane departure recognition. Different from the deep learning methods of LDWS, our LDWS model LEHA can achieve high accuracy and efficiency by relying only on simple hardware. The image preprocessing stage aims to process the original road image to remove the noise which is irrelevant to the detection result. In this stage, we apply a novel algorithm of grayscale preprocessing to convert the road image to a grayscale image, which removes the color of it. Then, we design a binarization method to greatly extract the lane lines from the background. A newly-designed image smoothing is added to this stage to reduce most of the noise, which improves the accuracy of the following lane detection stage. After obtaining the processed image, the lane detection stage is applied to detect and mark the lane lines. We use region of interest (ROI) to remove the irrelevant parts of the road image to reduce the detection time. After that, we introduce the Canny edge detection method, which aims to extract the edges of the lane lines. The last step of LDWS in the lane detection stage is a novel Hough transform method, the purpose of it is to detect the position of the lane and mark it. Finally, the lane departure recognition stage is used to calculate the deviation distance between the vehicle and the centerline of the lane to determine whether the warning needs to turn on. In the last part of this paper, we present the experiment results which show the comparison results of different lane conditions. We do the statistic of the proposed LDWS accuracy in terms of detection and departure. The detection rate of our proposed LDWS is 98.2% and the departure rate of it is 99.1%. The average processing time of our proposed LDWS is 20.01 x 10⁻³s per image.
