This work aims to analyze how Sophocles discusses before the Athenian polis’ citizens sophistic logos, the ambiguous position of sophists, and their impact as a debate about values and meanings and as a conflict with the ethical standards related to arete. It is examined how the characters Odysseus, Philoctetes, and Neoptolemus deal with the possibilities, limits, and uses of speech in their interactions, rendering persuasion, peitho, as especially problematic. Considering that tragic poetry examines conflicts in meanings and standpoints, the characters’ different stances about logos are regarded as representative of opposing views available in Athens’ cultural repertoire in the last quarter of the fifth century BC. Theoretically, Greek tragedy is taken as a political art that operates with both myth and polis, its issues and vocabularies, so that Sophocles’ Philoctetes (409 BC) could be interpreted as a discussion of issues of great concern for Athens such as communication and education, both then inseparable from the rise of the sophists.

aplicáveis a esses sistemas.
High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology has characteristics that make it
especially attractive for certain transmission applications. Furthermore, it is possible to notice
that there is a trend and prospect of increased use of this technology in Electric Power
Systems around the world. In this context, it has been increasingly important to have
techniques that efficiently include these equipment models in network analysis programs,
especially in power flow, in order to allow a correct modeling of the network in studies of
expansion planning and operation. The direct current transmission is becoming widely
recognized by their advantages in transporting large blocks of power over long distances, to
transport power from offshore wind farms to land, in asynchronous interconnection of
systems, in underwater crossings, and other issues that make it technically and economically
feasible in some situations.
In this context, this thesis has the objective to develop and implement a generic
methodology for the representation of HVDC Multi-Terminal Systems in the power flow
problem. In this sense, this methodology is based on the simultaneous solution of a system of
nonlinear equations that represent, in steady state studies, the DC and AC networks, using the
Newton-Raphson method to solve the problem. Equations that represent the steady state
response of the converters, the DC network and control strategies are presented. In addition, it
will be presented the main settings of HVDC converters, their characteristics and how their
modelling are set forth in the Power Flow problem.
The proposed methodology is validated by studying tutorial and test systems found in the
literature. The results show that the proposed methodology is able to represent satisfactorily
models of HVDC Multi-Terminal Systems in studies of steady state in Electric Power
Systems.

Counterfactual Thinking and Shakespearean Tragedy: Imagining Alternatives in the PlaysKhan, Amir 10 July 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is the application of counterfactual criticism to Shakespearean tragedy—supposing we are to ask, for example, “what if” Hamlet had done the deed, or, “what if” we could somehow disinherit our knowledge of Lear’s madness before reading King Lear. Such readings, mirroring critical practices in history, will loosely be called “counterfactual” readings. The key question to ask is not why tragedies are no longer being written (by writers), but why tragedies are no longer being felt (by readers). Tragedy entails a certain urgency in wanting to imagine an outcome different from the one we are given. Since we cannot change events as they stand, we feel a critical helplessness in dealing with feelings of tragic loss; the critical imperative that follows usually accounts for how the tragedy unfolded. Fleshing out a cause is one way to deal with the trauma of tragedy. But such explanation, in a sense, merely explains tragedy away. The fact that everything turns out so poorly in tragedy suggests that the tragic protagonist was somehow doomed, that he (in the case of Shakespearean tragedy) was the victim of some “tragic flaw,” as though tragedy and necessity go hand in hand. Only by allowing ourselves to imagine other possibilities can we regain the tragic effect, which is to remind ourselves that other outcomes are indeed possible. Tragedy, then, is more readily understood, or felt, as the playing out of contingency. It takes some effort to convince others, even ourselves, that the tragic effect resonates best when accompanied by an understanding that the characters on the page are free individuals. No amount of foreknowledge, on our part or theirs, can save us (or them) from tragedy’s horror.
