The report also contains improvement suggestions about how the company can use the current computer system more efficient. The methods that have been used in order to approach the problem and the collection of information have mainly been literature study, interviews and observation. The work started with answering the questions; which expenditure cost and direct cost exist in the section, how can they be allocated, if improvement can be done and how the flow of information is supposed to happen. In order to answer the questions we used our former experience and the knowledge we achieved by reading literature, interview relevant persons in the company and observations carried out in the section. Through our studies, we came up with an Excel file, which is the groundwork for a template that can be used by the company in different occasions depending on the situation and need. Design and Usage of Activity-Based Costing in a Trading Company / Utformning och användning av ABC i handelsföretagGustavsson, Maria, Holmström, Maria January 2001 (has links)

Background: The Activity-Based Costing model has its origin in the Manufacturing Industry and has since its origin become more usual. The ABC-method is beginning to break through in several others businesses than just the Manufacturing Industry, but there are insufficient information about how the ABC-model can be developed in Trading Company for instance. These companies often use simple and stereotyped calculations in their organizations and assume the cost price by calculating, which give rise to an inappropriate allocation of the costs. ABC could therefore be a solution to these problems and therefore would it be interesting to investigate how this model can be designed in a trading company.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and usage of the Activity-Based Costing in a Trading Company. Kalkylutveckling i tillverkningsindustrin : -En Fallstudie hos HordaGruppen AB / Cost model development within the manufacturing industry : – a case study of HordaGruppen ABTern, Karl-Johan, Ivarsson, Andreas January 2011 (has links)
Thesis in Management Accounting 30hp, School of Business and Economics, Linnaeus University Title: Cost model development within the manufacturing industry – a case study of HordaGruppen AB In the 1980s, a discussion regarding the role of cost modeling as a management accounting tool erupted. This attention led to extensive studies of how costing models were developed to better cope with changes in the company's internal and external conditions. Cost model design is influenced by numerous factors such as strategy, context and purpose. With this in mind, it became interesting to study a case company in detail to identify the usage of the cost model within the company. The main purpose of this thesis is to develop the cost model currently used by HordaGruppen and adjust it to cope with changes in the company environment. Based on HordaGruppens processes and their cost model needs, suggestions for development of the company’s cost accounting tools are made. The goal of this development is that the usefulness of the cost model in HordaGruppens management accounting should increase. The main method of research is a qualitative study focusing on detailed studies of the company's workflows and processes. Information has been gathered mainly through interviews and observations. Other sources of information such as the ERP system, organizational charts and the cost model itself have also been used. The completed study shows potential areas of improvement for management accounting purposes. The main areas of improvement are linked to keeping the underlying data up to date and changes in cost estimation. Finally, to improve management accounting in a changing environment, additional purposes for the cost estimation model is suggested.

Strategiska styrmedel i familjeföretag : En studie av familjeföretag i Gnosjöregionen / Strategic Management Accounting and Control Instruments in Family Firms : A study of family firms in the region of GnosjöJohansson, Jonna, Lidåker, Simon January 2016 (has links)
Family firms are the most common type of business in the world and the study of family firms has increased significantly over the recent decades. In line with globalization and business growth, the need for management accounting and control have increased which often has an informal characteristic in family firms. Scholars have warned that if management accounting and control is to maintain its relevance it needs to adapt a more strategic focus, through strategic management accounting and control instruments, to underline the vision of the business, which can create the need of professionalization of the family firm, through hiring external expertise. Whether strategic management accounting and control instruments is something that family firms are using or not, has not been investigated with qualitative research, which is why we have focused on a family firm intensive region characterized by high economic growth, the so-called region of Gnosjö. The purpose with this research is to increase the understanding of what role the strategic management accounting and control instruments have within family firms in the region of Gnosjö. We did so by focusing on three specifically chosen strategic management accounting and control instruments, explicitly benchmarking, activity based costing and the balanced scorecard. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach, in which data was collected through semi-structured interviews. This is to increase the ability to create a deeper understanding of the examined subject. The results show that only one of the three surveyed instruments that is being used formally is benchmarking, which is primarily done through continuous performance benchmarking. Furthermore, the study results show tendencies that the two other strategic instruments, activity based costing and the balanced scorecard, is used but in a more informal way. However, we see an increased interest and a need for these two strategic instruments as a result of business growth. Our conclusion is however that if these three strategic management accounting and control instruments are to be successfully implemented in a family firm, professionalization by hiring an external CFO is not enough; instead it requires a further professionalization through external expertise.

Since the manufacturing industry is heading for a higher level of customization and implementation of Lean, at the same time as outmoded traditional costing methods is still used in modern industrial organizations, it is interesting to explore the relations between production flows of customized character, Lean and different costing methods. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the cost precision in the preliminary calculation for a product flow of customer adapted and Lean character, and to describe a generalizable work process for this. The purpose is also to develop general recommendations regarding the choice of costing methods by, on a basis of the character of this production, a comparative analysis of costing methods (traditional costing methods, ABC and Lean accounting/VSC). Through a literature study and a case study of a production flow with a high level of variety and influence from Lean, both of the purposes has been fulfilled. The case study has been accomplished through interviews and observations. Problems and positive elements that according to literature characterize the production of customized products have also been found in the case company. That connection has been used to support the analysis of the relations. The relations between costing methods, Lean and production flows of customized character has been analyzed through a comparison between findings in literature and results from the case study. It has been found that Value Stream Costing (VSC) is the most appropriate costing method for production flows of customized products that has reached a high maturity level of Lean. The preliminary costing is dependent on reliable operation times which have been produced on the case study company, while a general work process has been developed. The operation times were in this case identified through video recordings of the production moments and a following analysis in the software AviX. By following the general work process that has been developed, useful material for preliminary costing and continuous improvements in the production flow will be obtained. Since research is showing that Lean should be implemented in the whole organization if full advantages of Lean shall be obtained, VSC is found to be an ideal costing method to replace outmoded, traditional costing methods at the same time as this costing method simplifies costing in production flows of customized character.

Ekonomistyrning i svenska skivbolag : en kvalitativ studie om hur svenska skivbolags ekonomistyrning karaktäriseras utifrån ett traditionellt och modernt perspektiv / Management control in Swedish record labels : a qualitative study about how Swedish record labels’ management control are characterized from a traditional and modern perspectiveLejdeby, Robin, Ewerklou, Gustav January 2020 (has links)
Background and problem: Criticism has been raised towards the traditional management control which pushed forward modern management methods and tools to complement management accounting. The factors that pushed out this modern management control are possible to see in the music industry aswell. This, together with the fact that management control in the music industry has a research gap, makes it interesting to examine how record labels in the swedish music industry are using traditional or modern management control. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to through the examination of two record labels create an understanding of how the management control is characterized through traditional or modern management control. Method: The method used in this study is qualitative. We have through a multiple-case study at two record labels examined and created an understanding of the management control in the companies with the help of semi-structured interviews and complementary questions through mail. Conclusion: It is possible to see that the record labels has partly moved to modern management control but also that you can see a mix between the usage of traditional and modern control methods and tools.
