The Map is Not the Territory

Urbanik, Brian A January 2012 (has links)
Hi Donald, It just occurred to me that I might be finished with this fieldwork. I’m sitting at the side of the road looking over this fucked up landscape of cattle, golf carts, trees with turning leaves, being rained on, frozen out, everything feels forced, and I’m double-taking sight after sight, saying to myself I’ve seen this before, I’ve done this already. I’m packing up my things. I’ll write more later, or perhaps I’ll call. bau Thirty-three locations in pursuit of the long view, from the borders of an expropriated forty year old ghost town. Thirty-eight Polaroids, thirty-six mobile phone photographs, thirty-six photos from a digital single lens reflex camera with an oiled lens filter, forty 15.2 x 10.2 cm drawings, fifty-six 38.4 x 16.4 cm drawings, sixty-three white-bordered 38.4 x 20.8 cm drawings, sixty-four 33.5 x 17.2 cm sketchbook spreads. 20 085 words; 14 123 by choice, 5962 out of obligation. It is important to figure things out for yourself. It is important to not learn too much of any one thing. This is a thesis because it’s a thesis; it is what it is. (That’s begging the question.) This is a thesis about begging the question.

VR som arkitektoniskt kommunikationsverktyg : Realtidsvisualisering i designprocessen / VR as A Communication Tool in Architecture : Real-Time Visualization in The Design Process

Saade, Antony January 2018 (has links)
How people perceive space is a complex thing. People base the perceived space on professional expertise, experiences and what visual communication tools the room is presented with. The purpose of the study is to investigate the visual communication between architects and clients; how architects and clients perceive spatial characteristics and how the perception differs and whether communication between them can be made easier using real-time visualization (VR). In addition, the study investigates how such communication could go and how detailed a VR model needs to be. The game engine Unity and VR-platform HTC Vive are used to produce interactive VR models and investigate how these can be used as a visual communication tool between architects and clients to improve the communication between them. The literature shows a clear gap in the communication between architects and clients where information is lost. Using real-time visualization, the communication can be eased, and an increased understanding of space and scale achieved. In the study, three VR models are tested with three various levels of detail on respondents, three architects and two customers. After the test, the respondents are interviewed about their experiences and space perception of the different models. The interviews show that the difference in space perception between architect and client can be overcome using VR that can show architecture and allow everyone to understand spatiality on their own terms. The investigation shows that VR as a visual communication tool is useful. Not only as barrier-breaking between architects and clients, but also as an integral part of the iterative design process.

A timeline through the architect Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni.

Sebastian Friedrich Beck 25 April 2017 (has links)
This research is a systematization of Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni\'s carrier as an architect and public servant, having as a background his work on the Department of Public Building (DOP), where he stayed from 1960 to 1990. Beyond DOP, the architect was commissioned to work in five others institutions and companies: Educational Buildings State Fund (FECE), State Company of Houses for the People (CECAP), São Paulo Electrical Centers (CESP) and Municipal Company of Urbanization (EMURB) and Welfare Institute of São Paulo (IPESP). During his stay at those institutions, the architect had several experiences and was able to try many different architectural and urban expressions. Starting with the question \"What is the architect\'s role in the development of a country, state and city?\", I chose a professional that dedicated half of his 60 years of work to the elaboration of projects for public institutions in São Paulo. This research shows the story of a man and public servant. The idea behind it is to explore the realm of public politics of the studied period and investigate just how much of this scenario influenced and have been influenced by the architect Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni. The main objective of this work is to study the story behind those institutions and relate it to the architect\'s story, along with the most important aspects of the culture and modern imaginary of São Paulo. The gathering of data, organization and restitution of the architect\'s work, known for being embedded with characteristics of modern Brazilian architecture, helps to enrich the discussion about the role of the professional and its relation to the development of the urban space in the studied decades.

O papel do desenho na formação e no exercício profissional do arquiteto-conceitos e experiências / The drawing\'s meaning in the educational development and architect\'s professional life - concepts and experiences

Alexandre Orzakauskas Batlle 18 April 2011 (has links)
Concerns observed during more than 12 years of educational life in the disciplines of Drawing and Architectural Project for classes of Architecture schools gave beginning to the present master\'s degree work. For so much, firstly, it was done necessary a rereading concerning the paper of the drawing in the Architecture. Several authors contributed with concepts and experiences to a better understanding of the several values attributed to the drawing. Once sufficiently characterized the importance of this way of graphic representation, it was necessary to expose the recent panorama of the drawing teaching in the country, from the Secondary Education, going by the Higher Education and accompanying the architect in the beginning of the exercise of their professional activities. They were applied field\'s questionnaires quantitative and investigative of the real situation of the drawing teaching close to universities of Architecture in the city of São Paulo. Soon afterwards, the comparative and qualitative study of an academic path lived by the own author, while student of technical and professional Secondary Education and later as student of an Architecture course, front to the graphic material produced by their students in the days today, students of course of Architecture of night period. Finally, an analysis on techniques of graphic representation used by the student of Architecture recently-formed, especially drawings by hand free compared to the drawings elaborated through computer programs, seeking to identify the best coexistence form among those several forms of expression of the architectural project. Opportune moment that translates a little the constant teacher\'s interests and needs in staying tuned in with their students\' competences and with the demands of the market the one that is destined, besides producing some reflections in search of the optimization of the teaching-learning system in the Superior Education, in other words, explanations on the professional that we are forming and on the destinies that are being drawn for the future of architect\'s profession.

ARCHITECTE D'INNOVATION : Marginal sécant, concepteur de territoires inconnus / ARCHITECT OF INNOVATION : "Marginal sécant", designer of unknown territories

Nury, Pierre-Yves 25 September 2014 (has links)
The central hypothesis underlying this thesis is the following: the development of our societies, in the context of the constituent system of actors and their relationships, is based on an innovation process regarding long-term issues. This innovation process is located at the intersection of social dynamics, design and translation, in a system driven by collective action and power influences. This thesis attempts to demonstrate these elements based on three concrete projects revisited through different theoretical frameworks of the aforementioned specific fields. This analysis is part of a unique research program integrating theory in real life situations and revisiting theoretical concepts through our experience; this reflection leads to the emergence of a new figure/player in territories development through their mechanisms of contemporary social innovation: The architect of innovation. This new figure fits alongside other players driving innovation and collective action. After identifying the conditions of its emergence and motivations of its intervention, the thesis concludes with the presentation of the different faces of this ‘marginal secant’ defined as a designer of unknown territories.

The Contributions of Architects to Post-Conflict (Re)Construction : Social Processes Towards Building Peace

Lepere, Sabine January 2020 (has links)
Wars and conflicts inevitably result in the destruction of the built-environmentand of communities. This paper explores the potential social contributions of architectsto sustainable peace building in post-conflict reconstruction.Recent discussions about the social impact of architecture insist on the benefitsof involving affected populations in the design and implementation of construction andreconstruction projects. Nevertheless, the humanitarian community often disregards thebuilt-environment reconstruction sector, despite the opportunities it holds to bridge the‘humanitarian-development-peace nexus'. Due to a mutual misunderstanding betweenprofessions, the value of involving architects in humanitarian programmes isoverlooked. In light of Jean-Paul Lederach´s theory of conflict transformation, I suggestthat architecture processes can contribute to sustainable peace via the improvement ofrelationships between middle-range and grassroots leaders as well as within members ofthe grassroots level of affected population. This can take place when the(re)construction planning, design and implementation processes properly take thecultural context into consideration and involve the users.Through the analysis of three diverse examples of post-conflict constructions inRwanda, Colombia and Iraq, involving architects, I will show that they respectfullyinsert their projects in the local context. They involve the local communities in thereconstruction process, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and consider not onlytechnical but also social and psychosociological aspects of housing. Thereby they cancontribute to the relevancy and sustainability of post-conflict reconstruction projects andsupport holistic approaches to peace building. Finally, I will argue for a greater involvement of architects in the humanitarianfield and call for more comprehensive research on their social contributions, the field ofpeace building and post-war reconstruction.
