Subversively, dear Watson

Carvalho, Larissa Pena Ribeiro de January 2016 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês: Estudos Linguísticos e Literários, Florianópolis, 2016. / Made available in DSpace on 2017-04-11T04:19:45Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 344851.pdf: 2180600 bytes, checksum: b645cb260462c8c4d41688cdda1ae323 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016 / Abstract : This comparative study focuses on the politics of gender representation through subversion in the characterization of Doctor Watson in its adaptation from 19th century literature to 21st century television. The interest of this study lies on the celebrated stories of Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson, more specifically, on the latter. Many studies have analyzed Sherlock Holmes, but few have focused on his less famous companion, and even less have investigated Watson?s recent adaptation to television in which the character is portrayed as a woman. With the objective of investigating whether this character has a politically subversive role, I bring the hypotextual character to analysis in order to compare and contrast it to its hypertextual televisual version. On the literary scope, I analyze John H. Watson mainly through the novel The Hound of Baskervilles (1901-1902) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and on the televisual scope, I examine the only female version of Dr. Watson ever portrayed, Joan Watson, via three episodes of the series Elementary (2012-) created by producer Robert Doherty. Since the present time still requires discussion about women?s rights, in turning this lead character and story narrator into a woman, the main question that has instigated my academic curiosity was whether this gender swap could represent a political impact in the postmodern era in which it is inserted. In pursuance of this answer, I utilize, among others, Raymond William (1973)?s notion of alternative-hegemony, Ella Shohat and Robert Stam (2014)?s considerations about politics of representation, and Mimi White (1992)?s discussion of ideology in television. This thesis demonstrates that while the literary character is very representative of his Victorian era, the televisual character challenges gender hegemonic notions of her postmodern era, thus representing an alternative to the 21st century dominant ideological system of gender.

Ribeiro, Rondinele Aparecido. January 2019 (has links)
In the contemporary scenario, marked by mobility, the relations between literature and audiovisual have got great importance in the ideals of society as highlighted by Ivete Walty (2011). We can say that this link between the audiovisual and the literary is notable for a successful bond that has recently entered the academic world under new perspectives by eliminating the entrenched binarism as part of hierarchies employed to refer to this process. In this context, the production of Dias Gomes stands out. The playwright responsible for adopting a more everyday language in national television drama adopted the conception that his art should maintain a critic dialogue with reality. Thus, in this scenario treated by Walty (2011) as the era of mobility, we intend, from the phenomenon of adaptation, to point out how the protagonist character of the play O Berço do Herói (1965) transposed to the soap opera Roque Santeiro (1985). ). Our essay focuses on character transposition and aims to point out the conjunctions and disjunctions that occurred in this process. To this end, it makes use of Comparative Literature as a methodological framework due to its inter and transdisciplinary aspect, which conceives the relations between literature and other expressions as a legitimate form of cultural expression / Mestre

Shakespeare in the tube

I have come up with two sets of hypotheses. The first is that the violence identifiable in the playtext seems to have been recreated by Howell through the specificities of the medium, making such violence neither excessively gory nor comic. The second is that Jane Howell's utilization of alienating devices in Shakespeare's first tetralogy, as pointed out by Graham Holderness, can also be verified in Titus Andronicus. Such elements may be related to the aforementioned treatment of violence in the play and may serve as a way of making political or aesthetic commentaries on the play itself. Thus, in order to approach my corpus I relied on television and performance studies and Bertolt Brecht?s and some of his commentators' writings on epic theater. I have also brought to my work the voices of critics about the violence in the play itself, most importantly Francis Barker's notions on the "occlusion of violence" in Titus Andronicus. The present thesis concludes that Brechtian elements are indeed present in Howell's production and that, to a certain extent, they are related to the violence in Titus Andronicus. However, this relationship is complex. At the same time that the extravagant violence is hidden from the spectator and alienation devices every now and then distance the audience from the characters and the action, Young Lucius' reaction to this same, often-unseen violence is highlighted.
/ Abstract : The following research analyses the television show "Amazonia: de Galvez a Chico Mendes" created by the brazilian soap opera writer Gloria Perez, in the direction of contribuiting for the debate of a monocultural vision and the homogeinity thought over the amazonian region. Organized in four chapters, this thesis purpose is to desconstruct the minisséries starting from the historical-cultural content, as well as the instrumental ones, as means of exposing how she interpretates from hers intermedia and intercultural point of view. Pointing the genealogy over the fictional amazon and the ficticionals aspects in the television universe, this investigation demonstrates in which way the #imaginary# presents to herself # constructed by literary and historical discourses # presenting itself in this massive format which is the minisséries. Starting from the fiction work # which brings, in itself, an intermedial product, even though, culturally and politically, appears to adopt a questionable position in the sense of reproduzing an anacronic discourse over the region # as well as understantanding the role of the television in the Latin America and analising their fictional products, treating the importance of them as disseminators of the identitaries traces from diferent regions of the latin american continent. From the intermidial dimension, as along the diverse textuals and genre formats used in the elaboration of the script, are analised both characters and scenes as like the resources which were engered interculturality traces in the studied work, through their themes and images over its history, borders and identities. Furthermore, this work evaluates, in this step, how a mass communicational system faces this relation between identity and culture in a narrative placed between the XIX and XX century and show on TV on the XXI century

Silva, Juliana Salum Ferreira. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This article main goals are to analyse and understand the television adaptation of a literacy work. In 2001, the channel Rede Globo produced the series Os Maias, based on the novel by Eça de Queiroz. The television story was written by Maria Adelaide Amaral and directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho. The adaptations rouse several questions concerning the literature conceptions, originality, cultural industry, erudite culture, mass culture, and authorship. Thus, to approach them, it is necessary the articulation of many aspects, searching the interaction among producer, artistic accomplishment and receptor and the context to which they belong. Therefore, as theoretical iniformity is necessary to observe "internal" and "external" aspects of the production. Besides understanding the general questions of a literacy adaptation to a television series, such a cultural industry features, brazilian television review, features of the television series format, the article selects two categories to closely analyse: the authorship and the project retaking of Eça de Queiroz, Cenas da Vida Portuguesa. / Mestre

January 2017 (has links)
Abstract: The soap opera is a television format with a consolidated history in the Brazilian audiovisual medium for more than 50 years. In a recent moment in this history, Rede Record de Televisão produced "The Ten Commandments" (2015), the first adaptation of a biblical narrative for this format. Taking into account the issues of narrativity, this work investigates how the biblical narrative, with characteristics of condensation, is manifested in another narrative structure markedly characterized by expansion. For this, the theoreticalmethodological referential of the French discursive semiotics is adopted, parting from the analysis of the most abstract structures from the narrative level to the discursive level, where are adressed the enunciative procedures present in both texts of the intersemiotic translation, that is, the literary and the audiovisual texts. The work reveals an expansion of the narrative paths corroborated by thematic and figurative isotopies / Mestre
