The Role of Acculturation and Enculturation on Alcohol Consumption among Hispanic College Students in Late Adolescence

Cano, Miguel Ángel 2011 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation presents a comprehensive literature review of the acculturation process and describes the following aspects: constructs, theoretical models, measurement instruments, limitation in research, and an emphasis on the acculturation process and its proposed relationship with alcohol consumption among Hispanics. Included are also findings from an study conducted on the relationship between the acculturation process and hazardous alcohol use among 180 Hispanic college students in late adolescences. Final results from the study were obtained using a path analysis, a confirmatory approach to test hypothesis. Evaluation indices suggest the path analysis had good model fit, CFI, RMSEA and SRMR (1.00, 0.001, and .02, respectively). In regard to the first hypothesis, data show that behavioral enculturation was a statistically significant (beta = .69, p < .05) predictor of greater alcohol consumption. Further, moderation analyses indicate that behavioral enculturation (beta = .59, p < .05) was a greater risk factor of alcohol use for men than women. Regarding hypothesis two and three, acculturative stress, intragroup marginalization, and depression did not mediate the indirect influence of acculturation and enculturation on alcohol use. However, higher scores of enculturation were associated to greater acculturative stress and higher score of acculturation were related to greater intragroup marginalization. In turn both acculturative stress and intragroup marginalization were statistically significant predictors of depression. In all, the model accounted for 31 percent of the variance in depression and 20 percent in alcohol consumption. In view of these results, interventions should be designed to target segments of the Hispanic populations that are likely to be enculturated. Further, interventions should consider introducing gender socialization differences regarding attitudes toward alcohol use that directly attending to the moderating role of gender. Given that data also indicate that pressure from both the heritage culture and dominant culture may increase the risk of depression, mental health providers should be attune to these effects of the acculturation process to help adolescents negotiate expectations of both cultures. Lastly, interventions for alcohol use and depression may incorporate family effectiveness training, to attend to differential acculturation as a systemic family issue that needs to be addressed at the family interactional level.

Nyström, Johanna, Pettersson, Cecilia January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to review social workers experiences of the effects on adolescents in compulsory care. We formulated the following questions to answer to the purpose: 1. What factors are important for the adolescents in custodial care and their social development? 2. In what way can coercion motivate a positive social development? The study was based on the theory of hermeneutics with a qualitative approach and our empirics were based on interviews with four social workers. The result was analyzed using the Life Model, an ecological systemic theory. It has been shown that the adolescent is affected by the structure that is present in custodial care as well as the relationships formed during the placement which in turn can affect the social development. The adolescent needs to feel motivated to achieve a positive social development and this motivation may arise from healthy relationships and a distinct structure. It is necessary for a person to be motivated to change in order for that change to occur. Healthy relationships and the right institutional structures can assist a person in this regard.

Kunskapens källa; hur hittar man den? : En uppsats om hur fronetisk kunskap används i behandlarens profession / The well of knowledge; how to find it? : A study of how phronetical knowledge is used in caregiving professions

Myrén, Christian, Lärkefjord, George January 2016 (has links)
Social workers use several types of knowledge to get about in their complex work, some of which is given through education but some you have to embody on your own. The aim of this study is to use phronesis as a theory and see if this theory can explain some of the nature behind social workers experience-based knowledge. Using an approach inspired by hermeneutics this study aimed to explore how social workers translate their experience into praxis. The data consists of six interviews with practicing social workers with several years of experience in caring work with adolescents. The material was analyzed with phronesis theory which is built up by three subcategories¨: practical action, morals and personal development. Phronesis in this study is the ability to adapt to the context of the situation and the ability work towards a goal. The results show that the subcategories were identifiable in the data and had an influence on one another. Analysis shows that one’s goals could have effect on work and possibilities for further growth.

I will never be well again” : Childrens´ experiences of living with type I diabetes

Svensson, Anton, Case, Matilda January 2015 (has links)
Diabetes type 1 (DM type 1) is one ofe the most common chronical diseases and affects mainly children and adolescents. DM type 1 requires a lifelong monitoring and treatment with insulin injections, which sets high standards of responsibility on the affected person. Childhood and adolescence is characterized by different phases. To foster the development of a good patient participation thoughout the maturation process, it is important that nurses possess indepth knowledge about youth´s experiences. The aim of this study was to describe children´s, in the age of 10-18, experiences of livning with DM type 1. The method was a literature study which consisted of ten scientific articles. The findings was performed by three main themes and three sub-categories: the experience of self-care, the experience of support with the sub-categories: support from parents, support from friends and support through the healtcare team and the school. The last theme described the experience of the diseases impact on everyday life. Over time the experienced understanding and knowledge of the disease increased, which generated in improved self-care. Children experienced that good problem solvning skills were the key to a functioning everyday life. Each meeting with a patient must in a deeper way be adapted to the individual to optimize the experience of everyday life for a young person with DM type 1. The nurses role in improvning young people´s experiences of everyday life should therefore be discussed further.

The aim of the study was to analyze in which ways the conceptions of young people on youth and on School Psychology can contribute to problematize the psychologist's practice at school. In order to achieve that goal, the theoretical framework conceptualized interfaces between Psychology and Education, as well as the theoretical debates on the youth and teenage conceptions. The theoretical fundamentals: (1) positions itself in favor of a critical conception of School Psychology, which appropriates the contributions of Marxism and the Historical-Critical Pedagogy; (2) defends the use of the term youths in order to emphasize the historical-social nature of the human development process. In addition, an empirical qualitative research was carried out in which were proposed semistructured interviews with four young individuals who attended the Integrated School to Technical at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Goiás Technology. The content analysis indicated the existence of gaps between a proposal of a critical School Psychology Review and the conception of young people about psychology as a profession: it is seen markedly as clinical-traditional and characterized by a focused action at the student-problem. Moreover, the adolescence and youth conceptions carry many contradictions. While the former is strongly associated with pathologizing and negative conceptions, the second expresses certain types of experiences, such as the transition to adulthood and the emergence of new responsibilities. The empirical study and theoretical discussions developed in this work indicate as key challenges for the construction of praxis in School Psychology: the compression of the historical-social nature of youths and adolescences, and the need to overcome the clinical and individualistic model of the psychologist in school performance.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2539.pdf: 1664752 bytes, checksum: 18fba1ff838f2cb4877723a2cc215c66 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-20 / This research analyses some teenager travestilities in a social net in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The thesis follows a Queer theoretical approach with an ethnographic field that united observation, face to face interviews and also via Messenger and Orkut (an online social site). It focus on new travestilities identity processes that have been built with different references in comparison to older generations of Brazilian travesties: especially less interest in following the motto of being dressed like a woman 24 hours and a restriction in the use of liquid silicon. These teenagers have tried to manipulate their social identities in a tatic and sometimes strategic way - through a process of building the feminine with the use of clothes, wigs and other accessories (montage) and taking them off to present themselves in a masculine performance (desmontagem). We adopt a historical and contextual perspective to understand how these teenager experiences marked by stigma and shame expresses ways of dealing with the closet apparatus. This perspective also emphasizes a sociological comprehension of their subjectivities. The thesis shows a preliminary analysis of how these new body and subjective experiences constitute a mix of resistance and insertion in hegemonic codes of sexuality and gender.

Identifying Adolescents With Hoarding Disorder

Carnevale, Teresa 01 May 2021 (has links)
Hoarding disorder is a relatively new diagnosis in the DSM-5, only just included in the most recent edition. The disorder has piqued the interest of many in the community, in part because of the hit TV show called “Hoarders.” Although there is interest, there continues to be relatively few research studies into the causes, treatment, and management of this disorder specifically in adolescences. Yet, in the research that has been published, it often sites the disorder first appearing in adolescents. This paper will discuss the following elements of adolescent hoarding disorder: The potential etiology and risk factors noted in the literature, the DSM-5 criteria for the diagnosis of hoarding disorder, and the characteristic signs and symptoms found in the adolescent presentation, as well as treatment. Finally, it will also include recommendations for healthcare professionals for early screening and treatment.

Adolescences lycéennes à La Réunion. Stratégies identitaires et pratiques médiatiques / Secondary school adolescence in La Réunion. Strategies of identity and media practices

Plante, Flavie 03 December 2012 (has links)
This dissertation is about the role played by media practices in the identity construction of adolescent secondary school (lycée) students in La Réunion. Secondary school adolescence is considered here as a period of multiple changes during which young individuals learn to be part of this moment of life. The transformation for students from college to lycée goes via the realization of “intermediary finalities”: differentiation, negotiation and identification. Differentiation means taking a distance from other individuals (children, adults, parents, opposite sex). Negociation results from the adolescents ‘ willingness to compose with different elements which are forced upon then and which are parts of their identity. Finally, indentification marks the individuals ‘ desires to adopt codes and activities playing a part in the recognition of their identity. The analysis of interviews conducted with students from the fifth of secondary school (seconde) shows that these teenagers are inspired by their media practices to define “strategies of identity” which help them in the construction of their personal selves. This research observes that media practices are not the only agents for the definition of adolescence: cultural dynamics operating in the island are equally important factors. The thesis also questions the links which can be made between media practices and rites of passage.

These questions guided the entire construction of this research that aimed to build scientific knowledge about the management and execution of socio-educational measures in the state of São Paulo and the repercussions of the neoliberal counter-reforms of the Brazilian State in assisting adolescent authors of an infraction. From the guiding question and the central objective of the research, we understand, as hypothetical propositions that the socio-educational measures applied to the adolescent who committed an infraction are subject to the determinations of the capitalist system. This submission is materialized in the historical process of institutional assistance, carried out a priori by the State and, later, shared with Civil Society Organizations that still exclusively hold adolescents responsible for all their actions, emptying a reflection on the inequalities and social injustices that level the violence and deepen the socioeconomic gap that separates rich and poor. In addition to the violence that draws the penal state in the face of these young people, the adolescent's socio-educational system experiences the contradictory phase of ...
