Contrivance, artifice, and art: satire and parody in the novels of Patrick White

Wells-Green, James Harold, n/a January 2005 (has links)
This study arose out of what I saw as a gap in the criticism of Patrick White's fiction in which satire and its related subversive forms are largely overlooked. It consequently reads five of White's post-1948 novels from the standpoint of satire. It discusses the history and various theories of satire to develop an analytic framework appropriate to his satire and it conducts a comprehensive review of the critical literature to account for the development of the dominant orthodox religious approach to his fiction. It compares aspects of White's satire to aspects of the satire produced by some of the notable exemplars of the English and American traditions and it takes issue with a number of the readings produced by the religious and other established approaches to White's fiction. I initially establish White as a satirist by elaborating the social satire that emerges incidentally in The Tree of Man and rather more episodically in Voss. I investigate White's sources for Voss to shed light on the extent of his engagement with history, on his commitment to historical accuracy, and on the extent to which this is a serious high-minded historical work in which he seeks to teach us more about our selves, particularly about our history and identity. The way White expands his satire in Voss given that it is an eminently historical novel is instructive in terms of his purposes. I illustrate White's burgeoning use of satire by elaborating the extended and sometimes extravagant satire that he develops in Riders in the Chariot, by investigating the turn inwards upon his own creative activity that occurs when he experiments with a variant subversive form, satire by parody, in The Eye of the Storm, and by examining his use of the devices, tropes, and strategies of post-modem grotesque satire in The Twyborn Affair. My reading of White's novels from the standpoint of satire enables me to identify an important development within his oeuvre that involves a shift away from the symbolic realism of The Aunt's Story (1948) and the two novels that precede it to a mode of writing that is initially historical in The Tree of Man and Voss but which becomes increasingly satirical as White expands his satire and experiments with such related forms as burlesque, parody, parodic satire, and grotesque satire in his subsequent novels. I thus chart a change in the nature of his satire that reflects a dramatic movement away from the ontological concerns of modernism to the epistemological concerns of post-modernism. Consequent upon this, I pinpoint the changes in the philosophy that his satire bears as its ultimate meaning. I examine the links between the five novels and White's own period to establish the socio-historical referentiality of his satire. I argue that because his engagement with Australian history, society, and culture, is ongoing and thorough, then these five novels together comprise a subjective history of the period, serving to complement our knowledge in these areas. This study demonstrates that White's writing, because of the ongoing development of his satire, is never static but ever-changing. He is not simply or exclusively a religious or otherwise metaphysical novelist, or a symbolist-allegorist, or a psychological realist, or any other kind of generic writer. Finally, I demonstrate that White exceeds the categories that his critics have tried to impose upon him.

The Analysis on the Medical Care Project in Offshore Public Sector with Strategic Triangle Approach

Li, Hsi-Hsin 21 July 2005 (has links)
ABSTRACT This research is mainly based on the concept of ¡§strategic triangle¡¨described in Mark H. Moore ¡¨Creating Public Value¡GStrategic Management in Government¡¨, and the environment system is surveyed with the viewpoint of ¡§an integrated public affair management framework¡]PAM¡^¡¨ which is developed by Wang, Ming-Shen. In Taiwan, the National Health Insurance Act has been the most important social welfare policy since its launching in 1995. The main purpose of the policy is to reduce the economic barriers of medical care. However, medical service in remote areas, especially in offshore islands, still has been a difficult issue for government. Officers are designated to carry out the politics of the democratically elected head of a local government, and have to create public value by succeeding at the task. Although it is difficult to build rural health care network, the executive officers as managers must achieve it with efforts. Moore has developed a simple and powerful diagram ¡§strategic triangle ¡¨ which is composed of V.C.S. to focus the attention of government managers on three complex issues they had to have considered before¡]or,while¡I¡^committing themselves and their organizations to a particular course of action. This retrospective case study takes the executive officer in local government as the public manager who takes the responsibility of running effectively the Lieyu Branch of Kinmen County Hospital in Lieyu Township in response to its residents demand. In illustration of the medical care project in stages , managers will realize the process and outcome that show¡G¡§an integrated public affair management framework¡¨ enables the public manager to evaluate the overall environment in clear presentation¡Fand ¡§strategic triangle ¡¨ helps the public manager to identify promptly the shortcomings and practical suggestions of the project.

Chang, Chung-Min 21 July 2005 (has links)
This research is mainly, composed of Mark H. Moore ¡§Creating Public Value¡GV.C.S. strategy management in government¡¨, and promoted by Wang, Ming-Shen with the viewpoint of ¡§An integrated public affair management ¡]PAM¡^ framework¡¨. Qualitative research method is used in this dissertation to analyze the process of local government promoting water resource development. The case study takes the main pusher of bureaucrats in local government as public manager. With¡§V.C.S. strategic triangle¡¨¡G Value, Capacity and Support, we discuss the mutual relation and make operational suggestions. Research result shows that with ¡§An integrated public affair management ¡]PAM¡^ framework¡¨,public manager will do good to evaluate the overall environment¡Fwith strategic triangle, public manager can evaluate the weakness of project promptly, and make practical suggestions. Therefore, we believe that V.C.S. strategy management can offer public manager broader thinking direction.

Chen, Cheng 29 January 2007 (has links)
Nonprofit organization (NPO) management has recently been a popular study field, to which the concept of strategic management has been also broadly applied. Notwithstanding it is nearly impossible for NPOs to calculate their outcomes accurately by evaluating the operational performance in monetary terms. The business world utilizes SWOT, the strategic analysis tool, to emphasize the external and internal environments and competitive advantages. That is however different form the nonprofit world which focuses on achieving public value. In order to effectively evaluate NPOs¡¦ operating performance, this study adopted the points of view of Mark H. Moore¡¦s (2003) V.C.S. Strategic Triangle and Ming-Shen Wang¡¦s (2005) Integrated Frame of Public Affair Management to manifest that public value could be the strategic management object for NPOs. By discussing the introduction of V.C.S Strategic Triangle to the NPOs in Taiwan, this research intended to discover the possible measures to improve operational performance. This study takes the Kaohsiung Jen-Ai¡As Home (KHJA) as a case example. The board members, consultants, committee members, and executives of the KHJA, officials of pubic sector, and clients were vis-a-vis interviewed based on a structured questionnaire. The goal of conducting the interviews was to discover whether the interviewees expected to improve the future performance when they put in labor power, finance, and facilities due to the organizational culture, value, and capacity. In other words, whether they responded to the social value and the support from both internal and external environments; shaped future organizational culture and capacity based on today¡¦s working experience; and remained the vision for public value in organizational short-term, midterm, and long-term plans and strategic management. . Research results: 1. social capacity could create people¡¦s well-being¡Xinstitutional design protects the people in need and ceases the plight; deprived situation would not be permanent. Bringing fortunate people and unfortunates, suppliers and dependents, as well as the young and the old people together would establish a stable social foundation for cohesive social welfare. 2. Re-positioning social welfare organizations as multi-service NPOs which are not only for traditional service of help but also the expression of the value of living quality and creation of public value. 3. Social welfare organizations could increase the supply efficiency, service flexibility and living quality with the model of mixed welfare economy, and avoid the financial crisis of welfare states. 4. The roles and functions of social welfare organizations have to be planned in a view of strategy including three key components¡X¡§value¡¨, ¡§capacity¡¦, and ¡§support¡¨ to guide the NPOs¡¦ future position and direction. Keywords: nonprofit organization, V.C.S. Strategic Triangle, Integrated Frame of public affair Management, public value

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the development and maturation of the Imperial State and its foreign policy in the mid-nineteenth century, particularly in regard to the diplomatic incident known as the Crhistie Affair. We entend, therefore, to reflect on and discuss the limits and improvements of the Brazilian foreign policy, and to compare Brazil’s and England’s versions of the incident. In addition, we intend to investigate João Batista Calógeras trajectory, a government employee who worked for 15 years in the Ministry and took part in some political negotiations between Brazil and England, and as a result, to promote a new way to comprehend the imperial bureaucracy in the State’s business. All in all, we aim to demonstrate that the aggressiveness in the English diplomacy against the slave trade combined with a defensive and independent policy of the Imperial government was the fundamental cause of the rupture between the countries.

Analýza korupce v lihovarnictví za první republiky / Analysis of corruption in distillery industry in Czechoslovakia after 1918

Vodička, Jan January 2014 (has links)
In 1923 Svehla's government adopted regulation on the interim management of alcohol, which entrusted the management of distilling industry to private held company. The company, whose shareholders were organizations uniting most alcohol producers, as a result, found itself in the position of alcohol monopoly. In my thesis I show, that this unprecedented transfer of state reserves of alcohol and also all control over distilling industry into the hands of distillers was accompanied by widespread corruption that apply distilling representatives to lobby the leaders of the political parties in the relevant ministries and parliament.

Analýza aféry Jana Kalvody v článcích z Lidových novin a Deníku Právo v letech 1996 - 1997 / Analysis of the Kalvoda affair in articles from Lidové noviny and Deník Právo in the years 1996 - 1997

Novotný, Ondřej January 2021 (has links)
The thesis deals with the well - known affair of the top ODA politician and the Minister of Justice Jan Kalvoda, who resigned from all his public positions in 1996 and left the top politics. Using the method of critical analysis, the work focuses on the resonance of this act in the articles of large domestic newspapers Právo and Lidové noviny and examines how the phenomenon, which until then had no parallel in Czech politics, was approached. Part of the work is a brief look at the development of the Civic Democratic Alliance, its top personalities and achievements during Kalvod's presidency, a medallion about Jan Kalvod, the main research evaluation of selected newspaper articles that began immediately after Kalvoda's resignation and culminated in the composition of his party as chairman in 1997. The whole work was written primarily on the basis of book sources dealing with ODA and subsequently through the study of major newspaper articles from the period 1996-97. Each chapter of the research part ends with the results and in the very conclusion there is a reflection on the whole case through the eyes of the author and its comparison with other political affairs.

Treating Infidelity: Therapists' Ratings Of Hope, Threat, Forgiveness, And Justification

Dodini, Aaron Jarrett 20 December 2000 (has links)
This exploratory study examined the beliefs of 82 experienced Marriage and Family Therapists regarding the treatment of marital infidelity. Participants were asked to read an on-line vignette and respond to a subsequent web based questionnaire by rating levels of hope, threat, forgiveness, and justification for a couple in regard to various affair scenarios. This study employed an experimental design using six groups to discover possible differences in responses across the dependent variables of hope, threat, forgiveness, and justification. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the six groups, which determined which vignette the participant read. The vignettes varied for each group by the type of affair (sexual, emotional, or combination), and the gender of the affair initiator. This study also looked at therapists' personal experience with affairs. Findings suggest an affair initiated by a woman was rated as more threatening to the marital relationship than an affair initiated by a man. Participants were also more likely to justify a woman's affair than a man's affair. While tentative, findings suggest that the type of affair and therapists' personal experience with affairs may be legitimate areas for further study within the context of infidelity research. / Master of Science
