Religion in the making; or, The Modern Prometheus : Om Syntheiströrelsen och samtida religion och religiositet

Karlsson, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)

Impact of a California Community College's General Education Information Literacy Requirement

Usina, Phyllis 01 January 2015 (has links)
Budget cuts at a California community college prompted stakeholders to consider dropping the college's general education information literacy (IL) requirement. Broad institutional outcomes data showed learning gains, but no targeted assessment existed regarding the IL requirement's impact on those gains. This quantitative study used Astin and Antonio's Inputs-Environment-Outcomes (I-E-O) assessment model to address relationships among student characteristics of demographic and prior preparation (Inputs), the IL requirement (Environment), and student reports of information critical analysis behavior and confidence (Outcomes). Study participants were 525 students aged 18 years and older who had completed the IL course with a grade of 2.0 or better and volunteered to complete an anonymous survey. The majority of participants reported the IL requirement had a positive impact upon subsequent coursework, with 87% stating that taking it in the first or second term would be most helpful. Less preparedness for information critical analysis prior to the IL course was significantly correlated (r = -.35, r = -.38, p < .001) with higher reported frequency of 2 measures of information evaluation changes following completion of the course. The 3 hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that the predictors of student demographic characteristics, prior student preparation, and IL course format contributed significantly to reported information critical analysis and confidence. The study's outcome was a white paper with recommendations to support completion of the IL course requirement early, continue the IL requirement, and repeat the study's survey in the future. Effective IL education promotes information evaluation behaviors essential to informed members of society.

Against the Murderous, Thieving Hordes of Peasants : A comparative study between the grievances of the Dacke War, and the German Peasant´sWar

Steinvall, Alexander January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study is to make a comparative study between the grievances during the Dacke Warand the German Peasant´s War. These two conflicts may have occurred separately, regarding bothgeographical and chronological distances but also share common issues for this comparative study.Less than two decades separates these two conflicts and they were all by their own serious insurrectionsduring their time. While the German Peasant´s War was the greatest uprising in Europe up tothe French Revolution, the Dacke War was the biggest Peasant Rebellion in Scandinavian history. While the German Peasant War has been studied and researched by historians for a relative longtime, the Dacke War has been neglected in research history. If it were not for the Swedish professorLars-Olof Larsson’s studies during foremost in the 1960s, the Dacke War would have been a historicallyuncharted territory of research indeed. This study aims to foremost supplement the unsatisfiedresearch on the Dacke War, but also supplement the research of The German Peasant war, with thiscomparative study. Although is exists a somewhat considerable amount of studies and theories regardinggeneral peasant uprisings and revolts from this period, researchers are still debating themain causes for these violent conflicts. The combination of different geographical and social differencesand insufficient sources makes studies about theses conflicts both problematic and complex. The result of this comparative study, show that both uprisings shared both common and differentkinds of grievances where generally the rebels of the German Peasant´s War had a larger propotionof demands than the rebels of the Dacke War. In Sweden the grievances was largely made up bycomplaints. While the German Peasant´s War was generally more radical and religious motivatedthan the Dacke War, it shared many similarities to each other, especially when it came to economicand economical complaints. While the German Peasants (although not all rebel-groups) made radicaldemands, such as the abolishment of serfdom, the rebels during the Dacke War were more intenton restoring their former rights and customs. Therefore the Swedish peasantry motivated theircomplaints by claiming they had juridical rights and legal claims to motivate rebellion. The Germanpeasants on the other hand, although also sharing the same motives but in somewhat lesser degree, had less legal rights and therefore motivated their demands in religious terms. The reason why thegrievances during the Dacke War mostly can be categorized as complaints instead of demands, maybe explained how influential and political equal the Swedish peasants were as a social group and estatein Swedish society compared to the many peasants living in serfdom in the Holy Roman Empire. This is also why German rebels more often legitimized their demands with religious motive, because they lacked the political power as social group and estate.

Ekerö Trappräcke

Persson, Jonas, Tasevski, Alexander January 2014 (has links)

Swedish Security &amp; Defence Policy 1990-2012 : The transformation from neutrality to solidarity through a state identity perspective

Lundquist, Dan January 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyse the transformation of Sweden’s state identity as well as its Security and Defence Policy through a theoretical framework based on Alexander Wendt’s “Social Theory of International Relations”. By identifying factors (both internal and external) that have affected Sweden’s actions and policymaking, the thesis provides an understanding of the gradual conversion from neutrality, isolation and national defence to military non-alignment, cooperation and international operations. The thesis discusses a future renationalisation in international relations and identifies difficulties with Sweden’s policy of being militarily non-aligned in peacetime aiming for neutrality in wartime. Because of Sweden’s membership in the European Union, NATO’s Partnership for Peace, and the Declaration of Solidarity, the neutrality option does not seem particularly viable if a conflict were to arise in Sweden’s vicinity.

Limited Military Pressure – An Analytical Framework to Assess No-Fly Zones as a Single Instrument in Coercive Diplomacy

Gregor, Annelie January 2012 (has links)
Coercive diplomacy attempts to use military force in a limited fashion as a diplomatic and political tool in order to persuade an opponent to cease aggression rather than to bludgeon him into stopping. The use of limited military force in coercive diplomacy is not a military strategy, but rather a refined political and psychological instrument used for resolving a crisis. One relatively new instrument in the toolbox of limited force when engaging in coercive diplomacy, fashioned to deter adversaries, is the use of no-fly zones. The term no-fly zone describes the physical area of a nation that is patrolled using the airpower of another sovereign state or coalition. However, despite its relatively frequent use in its short history, it has largely been ignored in theoretical studies of coercive diplomacy. As scholars, such as Daniel Byman and Matthew Waxman, have presented a critical view on the limitations of approaching a study on a single instrument in coercive diplomacy, this paper grounds the argument that there is still value in this approach. Given that the conditions of coercive diplomacy mainly focus on an array of coercive instruments at a political level, are the conditions in the theories of coercive diplomacy sufficient to explain the political success of the military instrument of no-fly zones? Hence, this paper illustrates the theoretical reach of the theories of coercive diplomacy by highlighting the fungibility of the coercive diplomacy’s theoretical ‘success conditions’ when assessing a single military instrument. By studying the political success and failure in four separate cases, this paper proposes an analytical framework, which is by and large, derived from Peter Viggo Jakobsen and Alexander George’s theoretical basis. However, as the theoretical basis does not fully cover all of the political dimensions of no-fly zones, an additional variable is proposed. The resulting analytical framework suggests that this is a viable approach, but only by combining Jakobsen’s revised conditions with the original work of Alexander George, in addition to the proposed variable. Thus, this result contributes to the large body of scholarly work on coercive diplomacy theory and the debate whether one can assess a specific coercive instrument with the political ‘success conditions’ of coercive diplomacy, or not. / Master Thesis

"Un episodio en la vida del pintor viajero" by César Aira : the traveller painter in the 19th century's Latin America between literature, art and science

Magnin, Lucile 16 November 2012 (has links)
This research is focused on the novel Un episodio en la vida del pintor viajero (An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter), by César Aira, one of the greatest contemporary Argentine writers. In this novel published in 2000, and translated to french in 2001, Aira relates Johan Moritz Rugendas'first trip to Argentina. Rugendas was a German romantic painter of the first part of the nineteenth century who travelled throughout Latin America during twenty years and made thousands of paintings and drawings. Inspired from Alexander von Humboldt's theories, and more precisely from "the physiognomy of nature", Rugendas was also a naturalist artist and his art could help science. In 1838, he crossed the Andes and the Argentinian pampa with another painter, Robert Krause, but he suffered a fall horse before arriving to San Luis. During the return trip to Chile, he is said to have approached the Indians near Mendoza. This episode of Rugendas' life is the one Aira relates, his own way. The first part of this thesis aims to deeply analyze the novel, through its different themes. Among them are the links between art and travel, writing and painting, art and science, the perception of beauty and ugliness. This trip made of pain and discoveries turns out to be a real initiatory journey for the artist. In the second part, I adopt an historical point of view, comparing the novel with the events related in biographies of Rugendas and in contemporary accounts, and reflecting about the dialectic between fiction and reality. All this leads me to think about the activity of traveller painter, in the third part. I first reconstitute the trip route of the two artists, drawing a parallel between the paintings of Rugendas and the narration of Krause, then I consider each characteristic of the occupation of traveller painter through the experience of these artists and other painters who travelled through Latin America in the nineteenth century, such as Léon Pallière, Auguste Borget or Raymond Monvoisin for instance, and the painters inspired from Humboldt's theories. This thesis, which deals with literature, history of art and aesthetics, is an interdisciplinary research.
