Alegorias do mundo de Saramago

Este trabalho de literatura comparada interpreta as obras Ensaio sobre a cegueira (1995), A caverna (2000) e Ensaio sobre a lucidez (2004) a partir de uma perspectiva interdisciplinar sustentada por aproximações intertextuais entre literatura e filosofia. Meu objetivo é analisar como a ficção de Saramago dialoga com a Alegoria da caverna, de Platão, ressignificando-a por meio de um deslocamento do idealismo platônico para o campo do materialismo marxista. Para tanto, proponho uma leitura alegórica, intertextual e interdisciplinar. A literatura, parte inalienável da cultura, permitiu a Saramago aproximar o idealismo platônico do materialismo marxista e, através da linguagem literária, fundir estas visões de mundo e reconstituir ficcionalmente as ideias inerentes a elas. O trabalho analítico toma como referenciais F. Jameson (1992), W.Benjamin (1984) e I. Mészáros (2002), e enfoca aspectos do nível da narrativa, entre eles sequências, causalidades e personagens, de modo a identificar suas funções e convergências no nível da significação alegórica. Considero os textos ficcionais metonímias do real e, neste sentido, pretendo evidenciar como Saramago estabelece em sua ficção um diálogo com a referencialidade histórica do tempo presente, no qual o capitalismo rege a vida dos indivíduos e das instituições sociais através de suas práticas de produção, de sua base material e de sua ideologia. A intertextualidade foi o operador de leitura que norteou esta pesquisa, e a interdisciplinaridade, a metodologia. Na alegoria criada por Saramago, a cegueira tem na figura feminina um elemento importante. Por isso, analisei a questão do gênero a fim de pontuar como convergem, nas personagens femininas e masculinas, valorações distintas que projetam o feminino como um lugar de positividade capaz de ressignificar valores do humano. / This work of comparative literature presents an interpretative reading of Blindness (1995), The Cave (2000) and Seeing (2004) from an interdisciplinary perspective supported by the dialogue between literature and philosophy. The objective is to analyze how the fiction of Saramago rewrites Plato’s Allegory of the cave. To this end, I propose an allegorical, intertextual and interdisciplinary reading. The analytical work takes as reference F. Jameson (1992), W.Benjamin (1984) and I. Mészáros (2002), and focuses on aspects of the narrative such as sequences, causality and characters to identify its functions and its convergence on the level of allegorical meaning. I consider the novels metonymies of the real, and I intend to show how Saramago´s fiction engages with the historical present, in which capitalism rules the individuals’ life and the life of the social institutions through its practices of production, its material basis and its ideology. Intertextuality is the textual operator that guided the reading, and interdisciplinarity a key aspect of its methodology. In the allegory created by Saramago, the issue of blindness places female characters in a very special position. So, I´ve introduced the category of gender to highlight not so much the social construction of male and female characters but the different meanings attributed to them and which charge the feminine with positivity, empowering female characters to project values that resignify the human.

Littérature et politique, deux domaines distincts qui se retrouvent dans un seul livre ; Kalila et Dimna. Ibn al-Muqaffaʻ, à travers un style littéraire qui adopte la parole amusante qui joint l’utile à l’agréable, traite des questions politiques diverses. Notre travail consiste à dévoiler le côté politique du livre sans pour autant écarter sa dimension littéraire. Ainsi, les trois parties de cette étude ont essayé d’analyser premièrement la représentation du politique dans Kalila et Dimna qui passe par le genre de la fable qui instrumentalise les bêtes de manière particulière pour révéler la réalité du monde humain qui ressemble à celle de la jungle. Puis, deuxièmement, elle a abordé le lien existant entre le discours imaginaire et l’action politique, considérée comme la finalité des démarches entreprises dans l’exercice du pouvoir. Ainsi, nous avons traité des points liés à la conservation du pouvoir et à sa stabilisation comme nous avons évoqué le rapport entre le pouvoir et le savoir. Enfin, nous avons consacré la troisième partie à l’analyse des fondements qui servent d’assise pour l’action politique. Nous en avons étudié trois, il s’agit de la violence, de l’obéissance et de l’esprit de justice. / Literature and politics are two specific domains in one narrative: Kalila and Dimna. Ibn al-Muqaffaʻ, with a literary style that uses amusing words, necessary and pleasant all at once, raises various political questions. Our task is to unveil the political aspect of the book with much consideration for its literary aspect. Thus, this analysis is divided in three parts. In the first part, there is the representation of politics in Kalila and Dimna through a fable that portrays animals in a certain way, in order to reveal the reality in the world of humans that resembles the jungle. In the second part, there is the study of the relation between the imaginary discourse and the political action, considered as the object of any strategic use of power. Therefore, we addressed the points related to the preservation of power, and to its stabilization, as we mentioned the relation between power and knowledge. And finally, we analyzed the foundation of political action, where we observed three elements that are violence, obedience and the spirit of justice.

A tese estuda a composição de Esaú e Jacob, o penúltimo romance de Machado de Assis, publicado em 1904. Para isso concentra-se, inicialmente, no mapeamento de sua fortuna crítica. Em seguida, constrói um panorama histórico da lógica do duplo e da duplicidade estruturante de sua forma e estilo, desdobrados pelas figuras da ironia, da alusão e da alegoria, antes de poder colocar em questão o narrador e sua frenética oscilação de perspectivas. A reavaliação crítica do ponto de vista desse narrador irônico com um pensamento interior e único , aqui identificados ao conselheiro Ayres e à ideia de nada em cima de invisível, reconstrói o entendimento de vários episódios e movimentos da obra, fornecendo uma outra visão de personagens como Flora e de toda a composição. Um narrador que posto em seu contexto revela-se como faccioso ou como um verdadeiro impostor, a ponto de poder encobrir e liquidar toda esfera da alteridade, dando sinal exato, através da fantasia literária, da forma das relações sociais no país. O título e o subtítulo deste trabalho referem-se tanto à violência da representação tecida por esse narrador quanto à invisibilidade estrutural das práticas reificadas de uma sociedade cindida e completamente desigual, numa formação capitalista periférica, ainda fortemente marcada pelo escravismo e o paternalismo. O objetivo maior do trabalho é compreender como seu princípio construtivo deita raízes profundas, totalmente inaparentes à primeira vista, no solo desta formação social malograda, na longa transição do Império à República. / This thesis studies the composition of Esau and Jacob, Machado de Assiss next-to-last novel, published in 1904. In order to pursue this goal, the study concentrates initially on the mapping of the works critical fortune. Before questioning the narrator and his frenetic oscillation of viewpoints, a historical panorama is constructed of the logic of the double and of the duplicity structuring its form and style, which are unfolded by the figures of irony, allusion and allegory. Critical reappraisal of this ironic narrators perspective of a unique interior thought , here identified with counselor Ayres and with the idea of the nothing, on the top of the invisible reconstructs the understanding of various episodes and movements of the work, providing a new view of characters such as Flora and the whole composition. A narrator who, within his own context, reveals himself as factious or a true impostor, to the point of covering up and liquidating the whole sphere of otherness, yielding the exact trace, by means of the literary fantasy, of the form of social relations in the country. The title and subtitle of this study refer to the violence of the representation weaved by this narrator as well as to the structural invisibility of reified practices of a torn-apart and completely unequal society in a capitalist peripheral formation, still strongly marked by slavery and paternalism. The main objective of the thesis is to understand how the novels constructive principle takes deep roots, totally unapparent at first sight, into the soil of this failed social formation, in its long transition from Empire to Republic.

This investigation of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas focuses on the question why the author of this infancy gospel narrated the mighty deeds – either received as blessings or as curses – as though the child Jesus were an adult. A possibility is that the author could have been inspired by tales from antiquity in which the heroic deeds of gods, emperors and philosophers were projected to their infancy. The study purports that the answer to this question is rather to be found in the combination of myth interpretation and societal expectations with regard to children in a Hellenistic-Semitic context. The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of the Greek manuscripts and the translation history of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas as a second century infancy gospel, secondly to identify as the most authentic text the eleventh century version thereof in Codex Sinaiticus (Gr 453) and to translate it into Afrikaans. The study demonstrates that the most likely context within which this Greek manuscript of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas was communicated most significantly was Ebionite early Christianity. By identifying and examining quotations from and allusions to the Infancy Gospel of Thomas in works by the church fathers and by comparing the Greek expressions and phrases in the Greek manuscript in Codex Sinaiticus (Gr 453) with those of versions in other Greek manuscripts and early translations, a Gnostic tradition in the message can by ruled out, while Ebionite traditions can be confirmed. The child Jesus is depicted as interacting positively with his biological family which signifies salvation for other Israelites. Such salvation manifests in the identification and recognition of the child’s divinity by the Israelite teachers. The study argues that the Greek version of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas in Codex Sinaiticus (Gr 453) represents the genre of a discursive-biographical gospel type and as a result, the narrative and argumentative structure of this infancy gospel is of great importance. So too is the phenomenon that the narrative argument of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas is cast in the form of the ancient god-child myth. In this myth the child acts as if he were an adult. This adult-like behaviour of the child Jesus is not interpreted in an allegorically way. Le but principal de la thèse de recherche est celui d’analyser les mécanismes cognitifs et linguistiques à la base des métaphores « d’invention et défigées » en utilisant une approche qui vise à mélanger la théorie de la métaphore conceptuelle de Lakoff et Johnson (1980 et 1999), la théorie de l’intégration conceptuelle de Turner et Fauconnier (2002) et la théorie de l’analogie de Monneret (2004 et 2014). Pour mettre à l’épreuve le fonctionnement de la complémentarité de ces trois modèles, nous avons choisi d’utiliser deux textes littéraires de langue allemande des années 1980-1990 qui sont «Kassandra» (1983) de Christa Wolf et «Minotaurus. Eine Ballade» (1985) de Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Pour identifier le degré de figurativité des métaphores à l’intérieur des textes trois méthodologies ont été mise en place : les interviews des locuteurs allemands ; la consultation des dictionnaires en langue allemande et une observation des éléments présents à l’intérieur de la métaphore à travers la méthodologie MIPVU (Steen et al., 2010). L’analyse nous permet de comprendre le fonctionnement des métaphores dans les textes et les symboles culturels utilisés par les écrivains. De plus, cette recherche vise à montrer l’usage des « frames » et des « blends » conceptuels qui structurent notre cognition. / The main aim of this PhD thesis is the analysis of the cognitive and linguistic mechanisms within the creative and delexicalised metaphors using a mixed approach of Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980 and 1999) theory of conceptual metaphor; the Fauconnier and Turner’s (2002) theory of blending and the Monneret’s (2004 and 2014) theory of analogy. To test the complementariness of these three models, we have chosen two German literary texts from 1980 to 1990 that are «Kassandra» (1983) by Christa Wolf and «Minotaurus: eine Ballade» (1985) by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. To identify the degree of figurativeness of the metaphors within these texts, we have used three methodologies: the interviews to German speakers; the consultation of the German language dictionaries and the observation of the elements within metaphors through the MIPVU methodology (Steen et al., 2010). The analysis allows us to understand how metaphors work in the different texts and how cultural symbols are used by authors. Additionally, this research aims to show how the use of conceptual «frames» and conceptual «blends» that structure our cognition. / Lo scopo centrale della tesi di ricerca è quello di analizzare i meccanismi cognitivi e linguistici alla base delle metafore «d’invenzione e delessicalizzate» utilizzando un approccio che miri a fondere la teoria della metafora concettuale di Lakoff e Johnson (1980 e 1999), la teoria dell’integrazione concettuale di Fauconnier e Turner (2002) e la teoria dell’analogia di Monneret (2004 e 2014). Per mettere alla prova il funzionamento della complementarietà di questi tre modelli, è stato scelto di utilizzare due testi letterari di lingua tedesca degli anni 1980-1990 che sono «Kassandra» (1983) di Christa Wolf e «Minotaurus. Eine Ballade» (1985) di Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Per identificare il grado di figuratività delle metafore all’interno dei testi sono state messe in atto tre metodologie: le interviste ai parlanti tedeschi; la consultazione dei dizionari in lingua tedesca e un’osservazione degli elementi presenti all’interno della metafora attraverso la metodologia MIPVU (Steen et al., 2010). L’analisi ci permette di comprendere il funzionamento delle metafore all’interno dei testi e come sono utilizzati i simboli culturali da parte dei singoli autori. In più, questa ricerca rappresenta, quindi, un tentativo di comprendere l’uso dei «frame» e dei «blend» concettuali che strutturano la nostra cognizione.

Peintre oublié des études sur les anciens Pays-Bas, Otto van Veen (également appelé Otto Vaenius) est essentiellement connu pour avoir été le dernier maître de Rubens et pour être l'auteur de plusieurs livres d'emblèmes. En son temps, il était pourtant l'un des artistes les plus renommés des Flandres. La reconsidération de ce peintre, les influences qui furent les siennes et l'impact qu'il put avoir sur toute une génération d'artistes constituent l'objet de cette thèse. Centrée sur sa production peinte et dessinée, elle ne met toutefois pas de côté ses emblèmes, qui servent de points de comparaison pour certains sujets allégoriques. La production de Vaenius étant largement tributaire de la période dans laquelle il était en activité, cette étude est également centrée sur l'histoire culturelle et intellectuelle des Pays-Bas. Ainsi, les divers réseaux (artistique, humaniste, princier) qu'il fréquenta ont été étudiés en détail. Il s'agissait d'évaluer l'apport pictural de Vaenius en regard de sa démarche intellectuelle. Outre les portraits de diverses personnalités (princes, hommes d'Église, humanistes) et les cycles glorifiant l'image du prince tels que des Joyeuses Entrées, les peintures religieuses, respectant les préceptes du Concile de Trente, comme les peintures mythologiques et allégoriques, ont fait l'objet d'analyses qui prennent en compte le contexte de production ainsi que les diverses iconographies (tirées de sources variées, issues de I' Antiquité au XVIIe siècle). Alliant une peinture claire et lisible à des détails érudits et raffinés, l'œuvre de Vaenius donna lieu à de nombreuses innovations, tant plastiques qu'iconographiques, qu'il était nécessaire d'étudier. / Otto van Veen (also called Otto Vaenius), an artist forgotten by studies on Northern painting, is mainly known for being the last master of Rubens and the author of several emblem books. In his time however, he was one of the most renowned artists of the Flemish school. The reconsideration of this painter, his influences and the impact he had on a whole generation of artists are the main topics of this dissertation. Centered on his paintings and drawings, it does not put aside its emblems, which provide invaluable keys to understand some of his allegories. Since Vaenius' production largely reflects his time, this study also focuses on the cultural and intellectual history of the Netherlands. Thus, the various networks (artistic, humanistic, princely) he was a part of have been studied in depth. The aim of this dissertation was to evaluate his pictorial contribution with regard to his intellectual background. Besides the portraits of various personalities (princes, churchmen, humanists) and the cycles glorifying the image of the prince such as Joyous Entries, the religious paintings, observing the precepts of the Council of Trent, as the mythological and allegorical paintings, have been the subject of analysis that take into account the context of production as well as the various iconographies (from diverse sources, from Antiquity to the 17th century). Combining a clear and legible painting with erudite and refined details, Vaenius' artworks have led to numerous innovations, both plastic and iconographic, that deserved to be studied.

Nevertheless, his message on the theme of the papacy and practical guides to the character of the Pope is still valid. This thesis aims to familiarize with the life of the author of the letter, and Bernard of Clairvaux to outline the time and circumstances of the letter, as well as with the personality of Pope Eugene III. to whom the letter is addressed. Treatise is divided into five books, this work deals mainly with the fourth book. In the fourth book we find a few key topics. Relates to the personality of the Pope, what would be its features and how it should behave. It is a theme of "two swords" on which Bernard shows secular and ecclesiastical power. La thèse cherche à établir les balises du discours mythique et de la métaphore au sein du langage philosophique de Plotin. Le premier chapitre pose comme éléments essentiels de cette recherche le temps, la discursivité, l'âme et les autres hypostases. Le deuxième chapitre expose différentes théories existantes sur le mythe dans la philosophie ancienne et évalue leur pertinence dans le contexte des Ennéades. Le troisième chapitre porte sur l'exégèse plotinienne du mythe cosmogénétique du Timée, en reprenant un débat inhérent au contexte platonicien au sujet du niveau de littéralité de la création du monde. Le dernier chapitre explore un procédé propre à Plotin, qui sera appelé l'accumulation des images et qui servirait à compenser l'insuffisance du langage littéral à l'égard du discours sur les hypostases, sans toutefois réellement appartenir au discours mythique. La thèse conclut au caractère essentiel et fondamental du discours mythique et des métaphores dans l'expression philosophique de Plotin. / This thesis aims to define and delimit myth and metaphorical language in the context of Plotinus’s Enneads. In the first chapter, time, discursive practices, soul and the hypostases are identified as essential elements of myth through a short but dense passage of Ennead III.5.9. As this passage proves insufficient to conjure a definition, the second chapter deals with other attempts at definition of myth in the broader context of platonism, and their adequacy to the context of Plotinus is assessed. In the third chapter, I give my insight on a long-standing and intricate debate about the status of the cosmogenesis of Plato’s Timaeus and its Plotinian exegesis. The last chapter is about the most properly Plotinian device, which consists of accumulating clusters of metaphors in order to describe his metaphysical world. This method is to be understood as different from myth but is also intended to bypass ordinary language’s shortcomings when it comes to highly abstract notions. The thesis concludes in the fundamental importance of Plotinus’s mythical and metaphorical language in expressing his philosophy; it should not be seen as a kind of language opposing or rephrasing philosophical thought, but rather as an indispensable part of it.
