GENOMIC STUDIES OF NOVEL BEHAVIOR TRAITS IN LACTATING SOWS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO HEAT STRESS RESILIENCE AND MATERNAL PERFORMANCE

Sharlene Olivette Hartman (18523692) 09 May 2024 (has links)

Heat stress is one of the leading welfare concerns for modern swine production globally. Swine are especially susceptible as the species has inactive sudoriferous glands and, as a result, these animals thermoregulate mainly through behaviors such as wallowing and rooting up cooler patches of ground. In commercial settings, access to open ground or wallowing pits would present a threat to the animals’ health in the form of a vector for diseases and parasites. This puts aspects of swine welfare in direct conflict with one another, while public legislature and consumer pressures increasingly call for approaches to animal welfare that encompass all aspects of welfare to be considered. Efforts towards improved welfare are also crucial to the environmental and economical sustainability for producers and consumers. Previous genetic selection tactics used in swine herds focused intensely on a few traits and have led to modern animals being highly productive but also more environmentally sensitive. Intensely selected animals have energy margins that are narrower and more devoted to higher production leaving less accommodations for resilience in moments of stress. Since swine behaviorally thermoregulate, the use of behavior studies combined with those of genetics is one possible way to effectively identify heritable aspects of climatic resilience into future herds while still improving production traits. The primary objectives of this thesis were to develop an ethogram that can be used to base phenotypes of behavior; calculate the variance components of the behavior traits; correlate these components with those of maternal productivity and heat tolerance; and finally explore the genetic background of the behavior traits based on the identification of genomic markers significantly associated with them. Data was collected on 1,678 Landrace × Large White sows from a commercial swine herd in North Carolina. The data comprised information on climatic factors, litter performance, and behavior during a standardized human handling procedure in the summer of 2021. These animals were genotyped using the PorcineSNP50K Bead Chip (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA). These studies describe the development of an ethogram for use on lactating sows in a commercial setting in order to create the novel behavior traits of Responsiveness Score (RS), Vocalization Score (VS), and Shave Time (ST). The genetic variance components were then estimated, and heritabilities found to be 0.17 ± 0.05 for RS, 0.15 ± 0.05 for VS, and 0.10 ± 0.05. These novel behavior traits had low genetic correlations with traits of maternal performance and heat stress resilience. Genome-wide association studies were then performed, and 19 genomic markers were significantly associated with the three behavior traits. However, only one region located on chromosome 3 harbors a candidate gene that may play a role in heat stress resilience. Although the novel behavior traits explored in this study are heritable, they were not found to be viable indicator traits for heat stress resilience due to their low genetic correlations with direct indicators of heat tolerance in lactating sows. It is important that additional phenotypic records of behaviors related to welfare are generated in the future to better map their polygenic nature.

How We Tr(eat) Animals : A political analysis of the problems faced with implementing the capabilities approach

Westin, Johan January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to display and analyse the barriers of problems that makes it hard to implement the capabilities approach created by Amartya Sen and further developed by Martha C. Nussbaum. The latter is used in this essay. With the help from normative analysis the three barriers and the solutions will be discussed. The barriers are: Human resistance against equality, meat-masculinity and the paradox of eating meat. The solutions put forward to these barriers are: Animal citizenship and animal rights, in vitro meat production and categorization of meat. The barriers and solutions are discussed with the fact that violence and wars are declining in the world and reason and intelligence is increasing, but there are still problems for implementing the capabilities approach. The conclusions of the essay are that there are problems in our society which makes it harder for the capabilities approach to be implemented. There are also solutions to these problems, which are all long term consequences and changes. The conclusions highlights some of the problems in our society and tries to give a guide to how we can solve them.

Labonté, Josiane 04 1900 (has links)
Downer cow syndrome (DCS) is observed in dairy cattle and is an emergency condition that progresses rapidly and whose prognosis is reserved to poor. The only available complementary tests require the services of a commercial laboratory. The presence of local and/or systemic hypoperfusion, along with the presence of cardiac lesions at necropsy renders the dosage of lactatemia (LAC) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in the blood potentially interesting. These two biomarkers being measurable through the analysis of portable equipment, the present study objective was to evaluate the prognostic value of measuring LAC and cTnl directly at the side of the dairy cow affected by DCS. The percentage of negative outcome (death or euthanasia; NO) seven days following the study inclusion (d7) was 63.1%. LAC was not associated with the prognosis of the animal suffering from DCS. However, a blood cTnl value of ˃0.7ng/mL was associated with a NO before d7 (sensitivity, positive and negative predictive values of 54.1, 78.4, 82.0, and 48.3%, respectively). The use of a logistic multivariable model demonstrated that hypertroponinemia was associated with a NO risk 5.5 greater (95%CI: 2.1-14.6) by d7 than animals presented with a blood cTnl value of ≤ 0,07ng/mL. The animals presenting a HR > 100BPM were 3.7 times more at risk (95%CI: 1.5-10.2) of exiting the herd by d7 than the animals with a HR of ≤ 100BPM.

Bem-estar humano e sua influência no bem-estar de vacas leiteiras / Human welfare and its relationship to dairy cows welfare

Vicentini, Fernanda Victor Rodrigues Vieira 26 February 2016 (has links)
Increasingly, animal welfare (AW) has been gaining ground on the world stage, both by pressure from importing countries, as the demand for a more conscious society regarding the living conditions for farm animals. Despite the growing concern on AW, there are few studies on human welfare (SW) in farms and how it could influence AW. Thus, the present study aimed: to analyze the relationship between stockpeople welfare and animal welfare in dairy farms and the influence of training on attitudes, behaviour, technical expertise of stockpeople (employees and owners) and fear experienced by dairy cattle. The main conclusions were that farms scored in good AW level had a higher SW score and farms scored in acceptable AW level had lower SW scores. In addition, training was positive on human behaviour towards dairy cows, on reducing fearful cows, and on AW technical expertise. According to these results, the higher AW\'s level, the higher SW\'s level.

Verhaltens- und Leistungsmerkmale rohfaserreich gefütterter Mastschweine

Kallabis, Konstanze 10 June 2013 (has links)
Animal welfare is of growing importance to consumers of animal products. The development of animal-friendly housing systems and the research on the animal’s requirements are thus aspects of interest. Conventional feeds for fattening pigs are poor in dietary fibre and do not meet the ethologic and nutritional physiologic needs of pigs. This presumably this leads to misdirected behaviour and behavioural disorders, which are widespread in growing pigs. Numerous studies indicate that fibrous feed causes a higher satiation. The thesis on hand is based on the approach that a high level of crude fibre for fattening pigs leads to a reduced motivation to feed and to explore and thus provides relief to the animals. To investigate this, groups of 14 castrated male pigs were fed with a ration containing lignocelluloses during an entire fattening period and were compared to conventionally fed pigs. The feeding pattern of the animals was recorded using RFID responders. Pigs receiving high-fibre feed ate slower, longer and less often and consumed less feed than control pigs. This indicated an improved satiation. Activity and explorative behaviour was measured using various methods. Video analysis showed that both groups performed the same amount of resting behaviour. When choosing a place to rest, high-fibre pigs were less sensitive to their ambient temperature. The intensity of exploration, which was RFID-recorded, was not influenced by the feed. However, high-fibre pigs showed less interest in a toy and less agonistic behaviour. The competition at the feeders was higher, probably because of the prolonged feeding time. Presumably the housing conditions were not suitable for the detection of differences in explorative behaviour between high-fibre and control groups. High-fibre pigs fattened less than control pigs, but delivered better carcasses. The feed conversion was the same for both groups. Fibrous feed apparently enhances satiety in growing pigs and improves animal welfare.

Sensorbasierte Analyse des Fress- und Wiederkauverhaltens von Kühen

Wobschall, Annabell Sonja 08 May 2018 (has links)
In this work the ontogenesis of feeding behavior of dairy cows was investigated and two co-developed sensor systems for monitoring feeding and ruminating scientifically evaluated. It appears that the feeding behavior of first-lactation cows significantly differs from that of older cows. Particularly noticeable differences were found for the feeding speed, which was much higher for older cows. The feeding times of young and old cows differed as well, but to a lesser extent. In order to monitor feeding and ruminating two different sensor-based systems wer used. It turned out that the RFID-based system is a rather unfit choice due to its extensive infrastructure requirements and the insufficient registration of the animals at the feed fence. However, measured results are comparable to those found in previous studies of typical feeding behavior. In addition, differences in the behavioral patterns of healthy cows and of ailing cows were noted. The electromyography-based sensor system appears to be quite suitable for documenting and evaluating animal-specific rumination patterns. Based on the detailed analysis of the signals, it was possible to determine a rumination variable, similar to the meals variable. This approach is also advantageous compared to the RFID-based weighing troughs in that the latter suffer from inaccuracies in the feeding times due to their inability to measure actual mouth activity. Nevertheless, these RFID-based systems play an important role as they currently provide the only option for quantitative measurements of feed intake. Furthermore, the noted correlations between feeding and rumination patterns vary too much to allow absolute statements on the amount of feed intake. Additional studies will have to explore these issues further.

In this way it is fundamental not only to understand how the different risk and resilience factors to different stressors influence the response to stress, but also to develop strategies that can prevent or minimize the deleterious effects of stress. In this sense, acupuncture is an ancient technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used in the treatment and prevention of stress-related diseases. The present study proposed the use of two models of stress: one physical (physical exercise) and another psychological (startle model) to verify the reactivity to the stress of athletes horses. In addition, it was also evaluated if horses of different sporting modalities present different psychological stress responses and if acupuncture can alter the responses to physical stress. In the experiment 1, 16 Thoroughbred race horses were submitted to a exercise in the field of high intensity and short duration (12 m / s, 4 min). The RR intervals for analysis of the Heart Rate Variability were acquired through the Polar Equine ? heart rate monitor and blood samples were collected before and immediately after 2h, 4h, 6h, and 24h after exercise. The exercise promoted autonomic alterations in the sympatho-vagal balance since it significantly increased the low frequency component (LF), the heart rate and the LF / HF ratio, and decreased the high frequency component (HF) (p <0.01). There was an increase in hematocrit, plasma proteins, glucose and plasma lactate immediately after exercise (p <0.001). There was an increase (p <0.01) in serum cortisol values after 30 minutes, returning to baseline values after 60 min. However, no significant difference was observed in plasma cytokines IL-1? and IL-6 between moments after exercise and baseline. In experiment 2, horses of the experimental group 1 after exercise were randomly divided into two groups: CTL (C2): Control (without manipulation) and ACUP (C2)): animals submitted to weekly sessions of acupuncture at points VG1, C7, VG20 and B52 for 10 weeks. After the treatment period the animals repeated the same exercise and the same parameters were analyzed. Acupuncture reduced the LF / HF ratio, promoting a faster recovery of the animals, showing no influence on the other parameters analyzed. In the experiment 3, 24 equines were used, from three equestrian modes: Polo (PSI) (n = 9), Dressage (Brazilian Horse Riding) (n = 6) and Endurance (n=6) were subjected to the experimental model of startling through the abrupt opening of an umbrella. The results showed that endurance horses presented a significantly less intense startle-induced autonomic response than Polo and Dressage horses (lower LF / HF ratio at the time of the jump), paradoxically Enduro horses have cortisol levels in response in response to the startle than Polo horses. However, there was no difference between the modalities in the behavioral response after the startle, and Polo horses had significantly higher baseline levels of cortisol than the other modalities and did not change their cortisol levels in response to stress. Thus, we can conclude that 1) the exercise in the field of high intensity and short duration promoted adaptive changes characteristic of stress, being able to be used in studies of reactivity to stress in race horses; 2) acupuncture has a modulating effect on the stress-induced autonomic response in athletic horses, and 3) the equestrian modalities of Dressage, Polo and Endurance present different stress reactivity / O cavalo tem uma predisposi??o natural para o esporte, no entanto, o seu uso em competi??es pode resultar em problemas relacionados ao estresse que prejudicam seu desempenho esportivo e principalmente a sua sa?de.
