Africa in Leipzig: A City Looks at a Continent 1730 - 1950

Blesse, Giselher, Börngen, Michael, Conrad, Steffen, Geisenhainer, Katja, Göbel, Peter, Heintze, Beatrix, Herms, Irmtraud, Hönsch, Ingrid, Huth, Karin, Lehmann, Steffen, Oettinger, Maximilian, Schippling, Heinz, Seige, Christine, Streck, Bernhard, Wolff, H. Ekkehard, Zeller, Joachim 31 January 2019 (has links)
This volume is an exception to this generalisation. It looks at various ways in which an African 'presence' was felt in the German city of Leipzig before 1950. Among the topics covered are: - the collection of 'curiosities', ethnographic artefacts, books and travellers' records - the publication of books - missionary work - teaching and research at the university (languages, 'racial science', ethnology etc.) - the display of Africans at trade fairs and exhibitions. Short biographies of 17 men who studied or taught at the University of Leipzig and made a contribution to the study of Africa are also included.

Die kontaminierte Bibliothek: Mikroben in der Buchkultur

Karafyllis, Nicole C., Overmann, Jörg, Schneider, Ulrich Johannes 06 May 2024 (has links)

Nitzschke, Katrin 22 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Before the book museum of the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) closed at its original location in spring 2002 , ready to move into a newly built library centre, a last spezial exhibition was opened in the former rooms in November of last year. The selected exhibits offered striking examples to illustrate the censoring, prohibition and persecution of the printed word during the 20th century, whether attributable to state regimentation or self-censorship on the part of authors and publishers. Libraries were equally involved, for example with restrictions on lending. A chronological structure was chosen to elucidate these perspectives and to present the distinguishing an common aspects revealed in prominent examples.

Multimodal Enhancements and Distribution of DAISY-Books

Eberius, Wolfram, Haffner, Alexander 15 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
An increasing demand for providing accessible content to widely differentiated target groups calls for a universal eBook standard combined with a flexible user interface. For this purpose, we enhanced the current DAISY standard to serve the blind and visually handicapped as well as deaf, hearing impaired, dyslexic and elderly users. In addition to supporting sign language videos and alternatives in simplified language, we introduced videos with media enrichments as a primary source. Additionally a personalizable web player, based on the Adobe Flex Framework, allows real-time streaming and local playback of original and newly developed multimedia DAISY books. Furthermore, the player supports multimodal input such as gesture and speech recognition to facilitate use by physically handicapped people.

DAISY as an intuitive and interactive technology

Lienert, Hansjörg January 2010 (has links)
Making market stands more accessible by using DAISY-technology, vendors can easily catalogue their products each week and use our services to fully automatically generate a DAISY book that contains the product-list that can be downloaded thereafter by interested users as a podcast. Additionally, a market stand can use RFID-technology to make the available products easily identifiable.
