Two adolescent mothers, two bondings: What makes the difference?

Traverso Koroleff, Pierina 25 September 2017 (has links)
A case study of two adolescent mothers of the same age is presented (17 years old) withwhich it is intended to explore the maternal representations and mother-baby interactions, that is, the different ways of “being with” a baby. The study pretends to discuss that it is not adolescent motherhood in itself a risk factor, but other mediating variables such as support network and the reflective function with which each young mother counts. Maternal repre- sentations were assessed through a semi-structured interview about maternal representations (Traverso, 2006) and the mother-infant interactions were measured and filmed through the Mother-Infant Global Ratings for two and four months (Murray, Fiori-Cowley & Cooper,1996).

Al Bchara, George, Erkers Lund, Josephine January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to expand the knowledge regarding whether the riskperception among investors in different generations in the stock market differs, as well as how it differentiates. This study delves deeper in four different generations, consisting of an age range between 18-78 years. The four generations are the following: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Y and Z. This essay utilizes a quantitative research method, which includes a survey, along with a deductive approach. The survey study involves questions that are intended to differently measure riskperception. Furthermore, the empirical basis is based on relevant statistical methods, containing descriptive statistics, a two-sided unpaired t-test, a regression analysis, and a correlation analysis with the purpose of answering our hypotheses nuancedly, as well as correctly. A 95% confidence interval is applied. With respect to the empirical evidence of the study, a discussion is also made, which thereby is connected to the theories and previous research that are presented in this study. Lastly the essay concludes that there is enough statistical evidence in order to confirm that the riskperception among shareholders between different generations differs in the stock market. Additionally, the study also leads to the conclusion that differences specifically manifest between Generation Baby Boomers and Generation Z. Following that, with the help of the correlation analysis, the empirical evidence confirms that Generation Baby Boomers riskperception is higher in comparison with Generation Z. All and all, the study did not result in any significant differences regarding the rest of the generations.

The horror of feminism : understanding the second wave through the reception of controversial films

Fulfs, Patricia Ann 02 November 2010 (has links)
Given feminists’ longstanding concerns about the ideological effects of media images, and prompted by the lack of, but continued need for, feminist activism today, some feminist scholars have become increasingly interested in how popular media shape public understandings of feminism, represent its issues, and define its history. Communication scholars also appreciate that both media texts and social movements are produced and received within particular historical contexts, and that controversies over either are discursive sites in which cultural and political values clash and their meanings are negotiated. During the 1970s, second-wave feminism, especially its radical wing, was a controversial movement which threatened to disrupt basic relations between women and men and, therefore, has been much maligned by men, women, anti-feminists, and a new generation of self-proclaimed feminists. Yet, the second wave is often portrayed inaccurately. This dissertation thus reviews key works, theories, and events associated with radical feminism as well as the debates between it and other schools of feminist thought–liberal, Marxist/socialist, psychoanalytic, cultural, and various ‘new’ feminisms. Then, employing a context-sensitive form of ideological criticism, I examine three films, their promotional strategies, their mainstream critical and scholarly receptions, and how these elements converged with particular feminist discourses within their shared historical contexts. Specifically, I investigate why the horror films Rosemary’s Baby (1968), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), and Snuff (1976)–which each featured an exposed, vulnerable, violated, or ‘monstrous’ female body–became objects of controversy when they tapped into the contemporaneous feminist issues of reproduction, rape, and pornography, respectively, and how the films’ receptions reveal ways in which people have made sense of feminism and its issues. I contend that these controversies, both individually and when viewed as a series, were symptomatic of the hegemonic negotiations of second-wave feminism and its attempts to publicize discourses about sex, violence, and the female body, negotiations which were occurring both inside and outside the women’s movement. Through these controversial cases, then, we can see feminism’s transformation–from an active movement which criticized the structures of women’s oppression to a discursive and primarily academic enterprise focused more on criticizing itself. / text

Signing to Maintain Joint Attention with Children with Down Syndrome

Burns, Rachel Dauer 01 April 2017 (has links)
The current study examined the role of two different methods of sign presentation on signed and spoken language acquisition of toddlers aged two to four years with Down syndrome (DS). The aim of this study was to determine if a method commonly used by native signers/Deaf mothers (referred to in this study as signing to maintain joint attention (SMJA)) was more effective than the method commonly used by hearing mothers and speech-language pathologists (referred to in this study as the triangular method of signing). Both methods were compared in a within-subject design for effects on the participants’ total number of words signed and/or spoken, unique words signed and/or spoken, and parent report of novel word acquisition. Although the sample size was small, clear trends were seen suggesting SMJA may result in greater increases in early language acquisition for toddlers with DS. These results are consistent with considerations regarding the DS phenotype. The use of signing takes advantage of strengths in gesture and visual-spatial short-term memory. More specifically, the use of SMJA addresses weaknesses in attentional capacity by allowing the child to attend to the object and referent without disruption, thereby maintaining joint attention and supporting language acquisition.

Predictors of Quality of Life (Qol): Comparing Baby Boomers, Older Adults, and Younger Adults Using Data From the 2010 National Health Interview Survey

Bryce, Helen Roult 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify factors that predict quality of life (QOL) for aging adults and to examine and compare Baby Boomers', Older Adults' and Younger Adults' responses to the 2010 National Health Interview Survey/QOL Functioning and Disability. Significant findings included several significant values based on the multivariate regression to estimate a model to predict QOL. In particular, being male, four ethnicities other than white, being older than Boomer, age in 10 years, the Functional Difficulty Index, the Functional Limitation Index scores, chronic heart disease, asthma, and arthritis all had significant p values. Adults with chronic heart disease, asthma, or arthritis scored lower on the QOL index, but cancer, stroke, or diabetes were not associated with the QOL index. Two hypotheses had strong support. Lower scores on both the Functional Difficulty Index and the Functional Limitation Index yielded lower QOL scores. Further research recommendations include establishing reliability and validity of the QOL index; running additional regressions for demographics (ethnicity, marital status, etc.) to predict possible combinations of variables predicting QOL or barriers to QOL; and investigating the viability of incorporating the QOL index into an electronic medical record (EMR) dashboard parameter to serve as a screening mechanism for those aging adults most at risk for chronicities or co-morbidities that place them at risk for losing their ability to age in place in the home of their choosing.

Určování rodičovství / Determination of paternity

Drábková, Alice January 2016 (has links)
The primary theme of the thesis is "paternity determination", an interesting part of private law. The goal of the thesis was to find juridical legislation that could be applied by legal institutions in the Czech Republic, and have been neither legally controlled nor properly spoken through. Also the thesis deals with surrogate motherhood institutes, same-sex parenthood, baby hatches and paternity determination of children, made by assisted reproduction. The thesis is divided into five chapters, which are divided further into sub-chapters. Following the introduction, the primary terms of parental difficulties, paternity determination and the term family are explored. The second chapter discusses motherhood institutes. It speaks primarily of surrogate motherhood's challenges, including other countries' attitude to this topic. The following chapter is about fatherhood determination, containing the juridical legislative analysis of the problem in the Czech law. The fourth chapter expands on the issues of same sex couple parenthood, and the forms of family coexistence. These issues are described in great detail from both the view of Czech law, and also as a global issue. The last chapter discusses the issues of baby hatches, and legislation regarding anonymity for those who utilize them in the Czech...

Compreendo a experiência emocional da maternidade em mães de bebês com deficiência / Understanding the emotional experience of maternity in mothers of babies with disabilities

Silva, Fabiana Villas Boas da 29 June 2018 (has links)
Conclui-se que é de extrema importância que o centro de reabilitação possa escutar a demanda emocional das mães e oferecer formas de cuidados adequadas / History shows that, in ancient times, people with disabilities were sacrificed or delivered to care entities and, even creating the idea of maternal love and familys understanding as the main institution to take responsibility for childcare, it was necessary much time for the child with disabilities to become part of their family. Psychoanalysis contributed to the contemporary conception of the importance of the mothers role. Thus, to understand the development of the subject, it is necessary to look at the care given to him at the beginning of his life. When becoming a mother, a woman must develop her role in many interpersonal relationships, such as divergences between the actual and imagined baby and changes in her psychic dynamics so that she can exercise the primary maternal concern. This study aims for the emotional experience of maternity in mothers of babies with physical disability; it seeks to identify and understand factors involved in this context in order to contribute to the practice of professionals who work with this population. A clinical-qualitative study was carried out with three mothers whose children attended a Rehab Center. A semi-guided interview and application of the Thematic Apperception (TAT) was made and the data obtained were grouped into categories of analysis and discussed from Psychoanalysis. The results bring themes that can be used with these mothers during the rehabilitation period of their child, such as feelings, defense mechanisms and their relationship with their baby. In conclusion, it is extremely important that the rehabilitation center attends the emotional demand of the mothers and provide them appropriate forms of care

No. of bitstreams: 1 Renata Pereira Condes.pdf: 1004616 bytes, checksum: 460ce238a7269fa03b1ffc1a79d65fb3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The current study emerges from my work as a psychologist in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and deals with the possible interventions of a psychologist with the different characters in this scenery babies, parents, relatives and health team and in different situations, discussing how these interventions can have therapeutic and preventive effects in mental health. To achieve this goal, theoretical concepts, supporting different kinds of interventions, such as trauma, helplessness, anguish, mourning and symbolization were discussed, based on psychoanalytical references which help understand psychic phenomenons. In addition, a literature revision about psychological interventions with babies and in a NICU was done, articulating these ideas with the ones about care proposed by Figueiredo (2009). Using the qualitative method of research, with participant observation, field diary and analysis of cases/situations, some types of psychological interventions are theorized, revised and constructed in this scenery, taking into account the contextualization of this setting and activities performed there. Scenes of parents group and two cases of siblings visit were examined. Furthermore, two cases of parents-baby and also a case of a newborn s death received psychological attendance and were analyzed. It is evidenced, safeguarding the specificities of how to promote interventions with each character in this context, that the prime role of a psychologist is to enable the beginning of mourning and symbolizations, which are ruptured or touched by the traumatic situation and the paradox newborn facing life versus newborn facing death/disease. It is proposed the maintenance of the holding and testimony clinic (BENAVIDES; BOUKOBZA, 1997), performing the functions of holding (WINNICOTT, 1960) and rêverie (BION, 1962), rescuing, initiating or keeping the psychic activity working, besides offering network and chain care .
