De-revolutionizing the “red classics”: a case study of Tracks in the Snowy Forest in fiction, model opera, television and film

Wang, Liying 10 August 2018 (has links)
“Red classics” generally refer to a collection of Chinese literary works produced from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s. Many of them were remade to film, opera, and television series in different periods. One of the “red classics” was the semi-autobiographical military romance Tracks in the Snowy Forest by Qu Bo. This novel and its many adaptations have been popular for more than half a century. This thesis takes Tracks in the Snowy Forest as a case study to explore how socialist “red classic” works have been “de-revolutionized,” reinvented for a new age and a new audience as products for popular consumption in post-Mao China, as compared to the sterner revolutionary works of the Mao era. / Graduate

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The houses of Lina Bo Bardi are many: the houses that she painted in her childhood, when she studied at the “Liceo ArtisiticoMamiani”, the houses she designed and described in her articles on Italian journals, in which she worked in the early yearsafter graduation, and the houses that she designed and sketched here in Brazil in her adulthood. These houses make up a rich, dense and complex universe: the universe called Lina. The universe of the girl who was bornin Rome in the same year of the 1st World War, the young woman who chose architecture, until then a typically maleprofession, and then who left to live alone in Milan; woman who decided to leave her country to build, along with herhusband, a new history in Brazil. A universe tailored by the habitat theme, which was elaborated by Lina throughout her life, revealing different directions, dimensions, without losing, however, the principle of simplicity of living in harmony with nature. This habitat was naive and introspective in watercolors, rational and critical in texts and illustrations, functional and popular indesigns and chronics. The different dimensions of habitat were primarily revealed through the analysis of documents foundin the Lina Bo and Pietro Maria Bardi Institute, confirming the relevance of the theme in the work of Lina. These dimensions, in turn, gave rise to specific forms of housing, which materialized these senses and rescued the "lostforms", as used by Lina in her works, and that generated at least three types of housings: the Houses of Stories, theHouses of Journals and of the Houses of Chronicles. This division helps to better understand the universe of Lina andeven her work, showing that the houses of Lina are representative part of the whole.

Lina Bo Bardi: móveis e interiores (1947-1968) - interlocuções entre moderno e local / Lina Bo Bardi: furnitures and interiors (1947 - 1968) - dialogues between modern and local

Cristina Garcia Ortega 30 September 2008 (has links)
The objective of the research is to study the design of the furniture and interiors that were conceived by Lina Bo Bardi between 1947 and 1968, a period during which the architect developed projects that were the result of her experiences in Italy and Brazil. From this perspective the investigation into a period prior to her arrival in Brazil is fundamental when it comes to recovering the historical, political, social and cultural facts, as well as the modern postulates, the predisposition of architects to extend their functions to designing furniture and the rise of Italian neo-realism, all of which form part of the background of Lina Bo. Heavily influenced by this context and with her desire to shape a Brazilian identity Lina Bo Bardi observes in an anthropological way takes a close look in her search for local themes which reconciles the modern internationalized concepts. She considers the materials, techniques, traditions, customs, nature, art, handicrafts or pre-handicrafts, culture and society of the country she adopted. This transfers various types of integration buildings and their surroundings, interiors and exteriors, furniture and the environment, the vernacular and furniture, art and the people -, into her architecture, her interiors and her furniture, which often constitute an unequivocal mimicry, not only between the architecture and its habitat, but also between the design of furniture and the elements from the land. It is important to highlight the development of this posture that provides the piece of furniture and consequently the environment with features that are particularly modern and with a sense of Brazilianity, thus making an important contribution to our material culture.

[fr] EXPÉRIENCE ET PAUVRETÉ DANS L OUVRE DE LINA BO BARDI / [pt] EXPERIÊNCIA E POBREZA EM LINA BO BARDI

LUIZA BATISTA AMARAL 22 November 2016 (has links)

Discourse analysis of narratives of Malay heritage in gentrified Bo-Kaap, Cape Town

Albghil, Samera January 2020 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Bo-Kaap (BK) is a neighbourhood in Cape Town which has long been home to a predominantly Muslim community with deep ties to the area’s colonial and slave history. In recent years, BK has become a hotbed for developers investing in property in Cape Town. Due to its sought-after location (close to Cape Town’s CBD), a flurry of interest in property development has ushered in an important turn in BK’s history and has begun changing the landscape of the neighbourhood. Important for this study is how BK residents grapple with the influx of rapid gentrification whilst trying to maintain their ‘Malay’ heritage. Historically, BK was known as a ‘Malay Quarter’ and had a distinctive ‘Malay’ identity1 constructed under apartheid legislation. It is this identity and concomitant Malay heritage which is of particular interest in this study. Under the continued threat of wholesale gentrification and arguably a loss of the rich history of early Muslims of the Cape this study hopes to investigate how community members who self-identify as ‘Malay’ signal their legitimacy to the area when discussing the fast pace of gentrification in the area. Notably, variations of BK’s Malay heritage have been documented over time. These works nonetheless point to the complex relationship between the documented/historicized construction of Malay heritage and the lived experience of having a Malay identity. Casting aside the notion of any homogenous Malay identity, this study opts to explore the manner in which a Malay identity is claimed and constructed discursively as legitimate discourse strategies against gentrification. This study adopts an ethnographic approach to studying narratives of Malay heritage in BK obtained through purposive sampling. A Discourse Analysis of narratives of heritage in BK is undertaken to draw attention to the discursive strategies employed by self-identified ‘Malay’ community members in the area. / 2023-12-01

Changing values in heritage: shifts from the tangible to intangible in urban historic environments bo-kaap as case study

Shem-Tov, Tamar 09 December 2021 (has links)
This study explores the emergence of changing values associated with heritage in postapartheid South Africa, expressed as a shift from tangible to intangible heritage values. Central to the study is an understanding of the evolutionary construction of changing values in a rooted heritage community within the urban historic environment of Bo-Kaap, the oldest residential suburb of Cape Town. Exploring changing values in Bo-Kaap, where tangible and intangible heritage intersect in the contemporary moment, showcases how heritage ably and fluidly adapts and transforms as an ever-shifting cultural process, and forges new, or altered, modes of identity construction. Bo-Kaap, as the case study, is a significant historic urban environment of Cape Town's central city with a vibrant community having cultural rootedness in place, in slave ancestral heritage, and existing living heritage deserving of protection. It is examined against a backdrop of the localised political, governance and civic agency milieu. The study follows the narrative of Bo-Kaap from its origins as a residential quarter of the early Cape colonial settlement, through the mid twentieth century when Bo-Kaap became largely fashioned and formed into an ethnically defined 'Malay' quarter, conforming to essentialised notions of race and ethnicity dominant in nationalist ideology, through the apartheid regime and the penetrating effects of Group Areas on the social and physical fabric of the area, until the present day where we are witness to a sea-change in outlook of the public on the very meaning and purpose of heritage. Heritage claims and heritage activism entered the realm of active public discourse in 2019 in response to free-market developmental pressures in Bo-Kaap, with inflections of social justice touching the edges of the heritage debate, and invited a broadening of the outermost limits of heritage discourse. Integral to this story is how heritage systems have been shaped by the past and colonial histories, new systems of governance post 1994, and a culture of intensifying identity politics. Following the arc of time illuminates the complex interrelatedness of heritage values with social, historical, and political trajectories, and aims to examine just how dynamically heritage values arise, merge and shift within the inter-relational temporal space; what activates them, who activates them, and to what end; and how they have entered into a space of heritage activism and public discourse. I suggest that this present change in discourse and the display of emerging sets of heritage values requires a highly critical reflexivity on the part of heritage structures and the profession, to look at what these changes mean for heritage praxis and governance and, more importantly, how to advance the relevance of heritage to a sector of South African society advocating for a decolonised heritage value framework.

IoT för äldre som bor hemma : Ett designarbete kring behov och lämpliga lösningar för äldre som bor hemma, anhöriga och hemtjänst / IoT for elderly who lives at home : A design study about needs and suitable solutions for elderly living at home, relatives and home care workers

Hammarbäck, Madeleine January 2019 (has links)
The number of elderly people is steadily increasing, while the number of educated caregivers in elderly care decreases. This poses a challenge for the future. The relatively new area of the Internet of Things (IoT) has had a great break-through and can offer solutions that could ease the burden for home care workers, make relatives feel more secure and give the elderly a better life situation. The purpose of this study was to identify the needs of the three groups of elderly living at home, relatives of elderly living at home and home care workers, as well as to investigate which solutions are suitable and how a design solution could look like. This was done using surveys and interviews with the three groups, which resulted in seven personas to illustrate their needs, a review of a variety of solutions and a design proposal in the form of scenarios. Some of the conclusions that could be drawn from the results of the study were that IoT could be used to help many individuals, that the attitude to specific solutions is essentially different between individuals, and that there was an agreement in all three groups that technology should not replace human contact and fellowship.

Från Fylke till Älgö : En adaptionsanalys av Bo Hanssons album Sagan om Ringen

Carlsson, Martin January 2021 (has links)
