Selected anthropometric, physical and motor performance predictors of lower body explosive power in adolescents : the PAHL study / Koert Nicolaas van der WaltVan der Walt, Koert Nicolaas January 2014 (has links)
Lower body explosive power (LBEP) forms a critical component in any individual and team sport performance and it is therefore essential to develop a means of predicting LBEP in adolescents for early identification of future talent in various sporting codes. LBEP is frequently used by athletes during matches or competitions where explosive movements such as jumping, agility running and sprinting are required for successful performance. These movements are usually found in individual sports such as long jump and high jump as well as in team sports such as basketball, volleyball and soccer. To date not much literature is available on LBEP, especially with regard to LBEP prediction models. Furthermore, studies on adolescents are scarce and a LBEP prediction model has not yet been developed for a South African adolescent population. It is against this background that the objectives of this study were firstly, to develop a LBEP prediction model from various physical and motor performance components among a cohort of adolescents living in the Tlokwe local municipality of Dr Kenneth Kaunda district in the North-West Province, South Africa; and secondly, to develop a LBEP prediction model from several anthropometric measurements among a cohort of male and female adolescents living in the Tlokwe local municipality of Dr Kenneth Kaunda district in the North-West Province, South Africa. Two hundred and fourteen (15.8±0.68 years) 15-year-old adolescents (126 females, 88 males) from 6 surrounding schools within the Tlokwe local municipality of Dr Kenneth Kaunda district in the North-West Province of South Africa were purposefully selected from pre-acquired class lists took part in the study. Data was collected by means of various questionnaires as well as anthropometrical, physical and motor performance tests. For representation of LBEP a principal component factor analysis was done and the results indicated that the vertical jump test (VJT) was the best indicator of LBEP in the cohort of adolescents.
With regard to the anthropometrical related LBEP prediction model, the forward stepwise regression analysis yielded a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.69. The following variables contributed significantly (p≤0.001) to the anthropometrical LBEP prediction model: stature (57%), muscle mass percentage (10%) and maturity age (3%). The LBEP prediction model that was developed equated to LBEP (vertical jump) = -136.30 + 0.84(stature) + 0.7(muscle mass percentage) + 4.6(maturity age). Variables other than the variables that formed part of the study could explain the further 31% variance in the LBEP of the adolescents. The physical and motor performance LBEP prediction model indicated that gender (39%) and 10 m speed (7%) contributed significantly (p ≤ 0.001) to the overall prediction of the LBEP of the adolescents. The LBEP prediction model delivered a stepwise forward regression analysis coefficient of R2=0.458 and a prediction formula LBEP = 68.21 + 9.82 (gender) – 18.33(10 m speed). The remaining 56% of the variance in the results could be explained by other factors than the variables considered in the study. In conclusion, to the best of the researchers’ knowledge, this is the first study which has made an attempt at developing LBEP prediction models from the anthropometrical, physical and motor performance components of a cohort of adolescents of South Africa. The prediction models developed in the study will assist teachers sport scientists and sporting coaches who have limited resources available, to measure and calculate LBEP in adolescents, with the means to do so in South Africa. Further high quality studies are necessary to further improve and develop such prediction models for various age groups of adolescents in the greater South Africa. / MSc (Sport Science), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

The implementation of broad-based black economic empowerment strategies in the Overberg Agri Group of CompaniesLadouce, Brett Louis 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Broad-Based Economic Empowerment Act, No. 53 of 2003, and its Codes of Good Practice on Black Economic Empowerment are the cornerstones of a strategy implemented by the South African government to transform the economy to an inclusive one where all citizens have equal opportunities to contribute to the economic growth of the country.
The process of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment has a direct impact on the operational activities of all businesses in all business sectors, including the agricultural sector.
The main aim of this study is to compile a comprehensive Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment strategy for Overberg Agri Limited. The strategy is based on the implementation of initiatives aimed at compliance with the seven pillars of black economic empowerment as incorporated in the Codes of Good Practice on Black Economic Empowerment.
A critical analysis of the legislative framework and executive governmental decrees governing Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment shows that the government of South Africa followed a structured legislative approach to the drafting and implementation of legislation aimed at creating an equitable society by addressing the inter-related issues of human rights, employment equity, skills development, allocation of natural resources and black economic empowerment.
Overberg Agri Limited partially addressed its significant non-compliance with the Generic BEE Scorecard by entering into an agreement with Thembeka Capital. However, this transaction only addressed the ownership requirement of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment and had a limited effect on enhancing the black economic empowerment status of Overberg Agri Limited.
Overberg Agri can achieve its goal of Level 4 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment status by:
• Reorganising its business structure in terms of core agricultural and non-core business activities; • Selling significant stakes in non-core business entities to black shareholders; • Entering into other joint ventures with black businesses; • Addressing all seven elements of the B-BBEE scorecard and making the required resources available for this.
This research report provides value due to the fact that it adequately addresses the research problem. It also followed the proposed research procedure in addressing the research problem and it provides the foundation for a general application of its findings.
Overberg Agri Beperk kan sy teiken van Vlak 4 Breëbasis Swart Ekonomiese Bemagtigingstatus bereik deur: • Sybesigheid struktuur te herstruktureer ten opsigte van kern- en nie-kernbesigheidsaktiwiteite; • Aansienlike aandeelhouding van nie-kernbesigheidsentiteite aan swart aandeelhuers te verkoop; • Gesamentlike ondernemings met swart besighede te begin;

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis comprises a critical analysis of the relationship between form and function in
contemporary iconography that contains religious themes. From the theoretical stance of Visual
Culture iconography can be defined as ‘context-specific visual language’. I suggest that meaning is
created not only through material usage but also through the hermeneutic content of images. By
means of a comparison between an example of what I deem literal iconography and another of
figurative iconography, I explore two divergent methods through which religiously-inspired
iconography can be employed in the construction of visual texts. The two examples comprise of
the evangelical poster Die Smal en Breë Weg (The Broad and Narrow Way) and Willem Boshoff’s
Bread-and-Pebble Road Map (2004).

Unknown Date (has links)
We assess the usefulness of deferred tax expense (DTE) in detecting earnings management. We investigate the relation between changes in deferred tax liability components using data hand-collected from firm’s income tax footnote disclosures and avoid reporting a loss. We also explore the relationship between the structure of ownership, the independent members of broad, audit quality and the usefulness of deferred tax expense (DTE) in detecting earnings management.
Our empirical results show the changes in the net deferred tax liability (DTL) component related to sales accruals, revenue and expense accruals and reserves can be used to detect earnings management to avoid an earnings loss. We evaluate the deferred tax expense can be used to meet the earnings target: to avoid reporting a loss. Deferred tax expense is incrementally useful to modified Jones model abnormal accruals in detecting earnings management to avoid a loss. Our empirical results show institutional investors and the independent members of broad have negative relationship with earning management.

The effective use of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles in surface search and controlBerner, Robert Andrew 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution in unlimited. / This study analyzes the effective use of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the Navy's Surface Search and Control mission. In the future, the Navy hopes to leverage the capabilities of a family of UAVs to provide increased situational awareness in the maritime environment. This family of UAVs includes a Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) UAV and Vertical Take-Off UAVs (VTUAVs). The concepts of operations for how these UAVs work together have yet to be determined. Questions exist about the best number of UAVs, types of UAVs, and tactics that will provide increased capabilities. Through modeling and agent-based simulation, this study explores the validity of future UAV requirements and provides insights into the effectiveness of different UAV combinations. For the scenarios modeled, the best UAV combination is BAMS plus two or three VTUAVs. However, analysis shows that small numbers of VTUAVs can perform as well without BAMS as they do with BAMS. For combinations with multiple UAVs, BAMS proves to be a valuable asset that not only reduces the number of missed classifications, but greatly improves the amount of coverage on all contacts in the maritime environment. BAMS tactics have less effect than the mere presence of BAMS itself. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Strategické řízení školství. Komparace vzdělávacích politik hlavních politických stran a vliv těchto politik na tvorbu strategie vzdělávání / Strategic Management Education. Comparison of educational policies of the main political parties and the impact of these policies on the creation of an education strategySchneider, Pavel January 2014 (has links)
The final essay concerns itself with the issue of creating strategic material for educational development in the Czech Republic on the basis of possible consensus of the major political forces in the country. This work's goal is formulating aspects of the strategy, which could be accepted by the major political forces and is therefore possible to predict its embracement and realistic execution. Formulation of these cycles comes from a conducted comparison of the various political party programs, which received more than 1.5% of votes in the 2013 parliamentary elections. The comparison's result will be further equated with the document of the MŠMT The Main directions of the educational policy until year 2020. Based on which, problems will be formulated and through their solution, a consensus can be expected, which will therefore become the basis for future strategies of the development of Czech education. The work's results bring possibilities of utilisation, by the ongoing discussions about the strategy of education, which will be usable in the deliberations between representatives of political parties and other subjects working on the creation of the strategy. This way, it will be possible to anticipate the situation where by each change of government a major change of the education policy will...

Caracterização genética de populações de jacaré-de-papo-amarelo (Caiman latirostris), utilizando marcadores microssatélites. / Genetic characterization of broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) populations by microsatellites markers.Villela, Priscilla Marqui Schmidt 18 May 2004 (has links)
A component considered critical for the managment well succeed of wild populations it is the maintenance of genetic variation. In the intention of evaluating the extend and the distribution of the existent genetic variability in populations of Caiman latirostris, nine populations distributed along the latitudinal axis of the distribution of the species in Brazil and a population in captivity they were studied with aid of eleven locos microsatellite. The genic mean diversity (He=h) and the observed mean heterozygosity (Ho) across all loci for all populations ranged from 0,628 and 0,567, respectively, denoting existence high genetic variability. The population from São Paulo being in the intermediate zone of geographical distribution in Brazil doesn't possess the largest genetic variability. The value dear FST was 0,270 and RST it was 0,342. Both differentiation measures among the populations were significant (P < 0,05). The higher estimates of FST and RST suggested a absence or low gene flow among those populations, exception done between the populations of Natal (RN) and João Pessoa (PB), where there was not significant differentiation among the populations, suggesting a gene flow pattern among them, fact confirmed by the related coefficient. It could be concluded in this work that the genetic distance among the population of the coast is affected by the existence of the Mountain of the Sea as geographical barrier for the fact of this population to present the largest genetic differentiations and not to group the any population for the grouping method UPGMA, same being close of the populations from São Paulo. The genetic distance among the populations seems not to accompany the geographical distance, in terms of latitudinal gradient (r=0,206). However when we removed the population of Cardoso's Island this correlation it increases significantly (r= 0,540), indicating there to be a certain space pattern of the genetic variability among the populations. The medium coefficient of related was low among and inside of the studied populations. With these results we can begin to understand the dynamics and it structures social of populations of Caiman latirostris.

[en] THE ABSENCE OF EFFECTIVE FULL DEFENSE AND THE JEOPARDIZING OF THE DUE CRIMINAL PROCESS / [pt] A AUSÊNCIA DE EFETIVA AMPLA DEFESA E O COMPROMETIMENTO DO DEVIDO PROCESSO PENALANDREA MARIA NESSRALLA BAHURY 21 February 2019 (has links)
[en] Criminal prosecution was assessed from the perspective of the principle of full defense during police investigation and along corresponding procedures. From the observation of state agency practices regarding criminal prosecution, it was possible to infer that, despite the fact that the 1988 Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil sets forth guarantee principles to guide criminal procedures, the performance of state offices is still ruled by a repressive/punitive characteristic that inspired the creation of 1941 Code of Criminal Proceedings. Decisions issued by the Federal Supreme Court, the Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Justice of the State of Minas Gerais were selected once they demonstrated an interpretation that excels in the relativizing procedural guarantees. Even if reforms are carried out to the criminal procedural diploma aiming at better adjusting it to the Federal Constitution, it is not possible to talk about respect for the due criminal procedure while legal decisions insist in softening constitutional principles and infra-constitutional standards that guarantee the rights of those who are subjected to the proceedings. The sacrifice of the due criminal procedure is evidenced not only by such legal practices, but
also by the lack of effective full defense once most of those who are subjected to the procedure cannot engage lawyers and the Government fails to comply with the obligation to provide full and free legal assistance through the Public Defender s Office. The absence of effective full defense tarnishes the exercise of citizenship and the criminal procedure is seen as an instrument to legitimate an exclusion
that precedes it. The Brazilian State assumes the posture of criminal efficiency to the detriment of respect for constitutional guarantees. From that stand point, is recognized the need to improve the structure of the Public Defender s Office to defend the rights of the disadvantaged ones, due to the technical and legal capacity of its professionals, they can fight authoritarian practices, defending the status libertatis of investigated and accused ones.

General Knowledge? The Roles of the New Zealand University in a Knowledge SocietyReid, Grant Horace John January 2006 (has links)
This thesis examines the roles of the New Zealand university in a knowledge society. Gaps in the literature of the New Zealand university in a contemporary context mean that the enquiry is informed by European and North American discussions of the educational requirements of a knowledge society. As the notions of the knowledge society and a liberal university education are both problematic and central to this enquiry, they are interrogated, in the second chapter, in some depth. A second review examines the work, recommendations and subsequent legislative outcomes of the Tertiary Education Advisory Commission (TEAC) policy process of 1999 to 2003. The principles of critical theory and critical policy scholarship inform these interpretative textual analyses. The two review chapters, which follow the introductory chapter, comprise the first part of the thesis. A description of the methodological framework employed throughout the project and a report of the findings of a survey of stakeholders follow. The discussion chapter comprises the third and final part of the thesis. The thesis seeks to distinguish the notion of the knowledge society from that of the neo-liberal approach to social and economic management. I argue that the notion of the knowledge society is viable in a range of socio-economic conditions. I suggest that the educational requirements of a knowledge society are better addressed when the scope of a university education is framed by holistic individual, social, and economic determinants, rather than rigid ideological imperatives such as those characteristic of neo-liberalism. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies is employed. Primary data are gathered by way of a postal questionnaire. The perceptions of three cohorts of stakeholders of the New Zealand university are analysed using both statistical and interpretative tools. Data gathered through a review of the literature of the university in relation to the notion of the knowledge society in New Zealand, North America, and various European contexts are analysed using a combination of critical and interpretive approaches. The major finding to emerge from the enquiry is that stakeholders of the New Zealand university associate an effective university education with breadth of learning. The notion of a liberal university education, with its attendant beyond-vocation curriculum assumptions, is not considered anachronistic by the majority of stakeholders surveyed during this project. Public and private sector employers and university students strongly associate a liberal university education with effective preparation for participation in a knowledge-intensive environment. Year 13 secondary students are less certain. A secondary finding is that most stakeholders consider that the research activities of the university academic should continue to inform university teaching, but that the teaching role is of growing importance, and therefore worthy of greater emphasis, in the context of a knowledge society. The project is intended to provoke further discussion around the relationship between the New Zealand university and the knowledge society. To date there has been little academic consideration of this relationship. The contribution of this thesis, relative to this gap, is therefore significant.
