The impact of Mzansi on the performance of ABSA.

Matsoha, Edith Likeledi. January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of Mzansi account initiative on the performance of the Amalgamated Banks of South Africa (ABSA). Mzansi account is a national entry level bank account that was launched in October 2004. The Mzansi bank account was established to cater for the previously disadvantaged people, living in remote and rural areas of South Africa. The Mzansi account is a product of the voluntary commitment by the Financial Services Sector as a response to the Government effort to address inequalities of the past. Historically, banks among other service providers did not actively offer banking services to poor people, especially those who lived in the rural and remote areas. This study examined how ABSA, in particular, reacted to Mzansi account conceptualization. The study also looked at the financial and non-financial impact of the implementation of the Financial Services Charter Initiative since 2004 until 2008. While the study focused on the charter since its conceptualisation, it also tracked the performance of ABSA a year before the charter which is the year 2003. Lastly, the study intended to evaluate the performance of ABSA, its macro and micro environment and the present day business environment within the FSC initiative scenario. The data collection for the study was acquired through literature review, observational study and case study research methodology. Findings of this study show that Mzansi initiative was found to have been a worthwhile initiative that has reached millions of low income people, who now have access to banking facilities and a formal banking instrument. However, the Mzansi initiative has not added a markedly value to the performance of ABSA bank. / Thesis (MBA)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2010.

Competencies as a predictor of work performance for branch managers in a banking institution

Pema-Mistry, Deepa January 1900 (has links)
An essential blend between competencies, personality and skill is sought after for successful branch managers in today’s banking world in order to achieve a high level of quality, on-time delivery, as well as customer and employee satisfaction and loyalty. In this study the predictive relationship between competencies (as a portrayal of personality and abilities) and work performance was investigated among the branch managers. The scores on the essential Universal Competency Framework competencies, the Person- Job Match and performance data for three years were used to conduct correlation and regression analyses. The study was conducted among 95 branch managers at a banking institution in South Africa. A theoretical relationship was determined, and this was supported by the significant relationship that was evident between the identified essential competencies of the branch managers and their work performance. The regression model summary indicated significance when using all essential competencies combined against the overall criterion score. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Reichert, Taís Araldi 21 December 2017 (has links)
No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Taís Araldi Reichert.pdf: 2740581 bytes, checksum: f8e2ac966d25ff89d44d9dc1ab6212a3 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-02-15T12:56:36Z (GMT). However, for the success of banking strategies in the provision of services and products in digital form, it is essential to analyze the acceptance and adoption of this service model by its users. This dissertation evaluated the perception of users in relation to the adoption of digital banking services, through the investigation of a Digital Banking Relationship Model, offered to micro and small companies, which are customers of Banco Beta. In this perspective, this study proposed as a general objective to analyze the existing relations between behavioral factors, based on the UTAUT theory (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology), and technological factors, contained in the theoretical model of TTF ( Task-Technology Model Fit), as determinants for the adoption of a model of digital banking relationship. The methodological procedures consisted of a quantitative research, of a descriptive character, adopting as strategy for data collection the survey method, with 156 respondents. Data analysis was performed using the multivariate statistical techniques, including the Structural Equation Modeling, with the purpose of analyzing and understanding the relationships proposed in the Theoretical Model of the research. For this research three theoretical models were proposed, investigating individually the UTAUT and TTF models and later the unification of both models as an integrated vision. For the theoretical model of TTF, the results show that the characteristics of the task influence significantly and positively the characteristics of the technology; the characteristics of technology significantly and positively influence the adjustment of the model, which in turn influences significantly and positively the behavioral intention. For the UTUAT Theoretical Model, significant and positive influence relationships were evidenced, from performance expectancy to behavioral intention, from expectation of effort to behavioral intention, from habit to behavioral intention and from habit to behavior of use. As for the Integrated Theoretical Model, the positive and significant influence relationships are confirmed from the performance expectancy for behavioral intention, from habit to behavioral intention, from the characteristics of the technology to the adjustment. This study contributes to the understanding of user perceptions, providing empirical evidence of behavioral and technological relations as determinants in the adoption of digital banking technology.

Managerial Decentralization in Nigerian Banks: Case Studies of Selected Banks

Ottih, Leonard Okonkwo 08 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this study were to ascertain the status of managerial decentralization in several types of Nigerian banks, to identify the training needs for managerial decentralization, and finally to develop a model for managerial decentralization for the banks studied if the findings warranted it. The study utilized the "Multiple Case Studies Approach" and four banks were studied. Included in the group of banks was one of the three largest banks in the country, one commercial bank with the full allowable foreign participation, one government owned bank, and one other indigenously owned bank. There were ten manager interviewees at each of the four banks. An interview guide was designed and used to seek information pertaining to six major research questions.

A modelling process of short-term interest rate risk management for the South African commercial banking sector

Sun, Jiaqi 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focuses on banking book interest rate risk management, more specifically shortterm interest rate risk management problems. This type of risk is induced by the inflation targeting policy of the South African Reserve Bank. As a result, inflation leads to an uncertain interest rate cycle and a period of uncertain interest rate levels as it relates to lending and borrowing products in the South African commercial banking sector. The lending rates of most South African commercial banks are tied to the prime overdraft rate. The borrowing rates are linked to the money market rates such as the Johannesburg Interbank Agreed Rate (JIBAR) which is indirectly affected by the prime overdraft rate. Hence, lending and borrowing rates are related to the repo-rate. Furthermore, a fixed relationship exists between the prime overdraft rate and the repo-rate. The monetary policy committee meets every two months during the year to make inflation and repo-rate adjustments, as stipulated in the inflation targeting policy. A subject portfolio containing fixed-rate loans, advances and floating-rate deposits is exposed to the change of the repo-rate. This short-term banking book interest rate risk is defined based on the fact that the repo-rate adjustment occurs every two months, the banking book risk management is short term focused, and hedging instruments against interest rate risk are short term dated contracts. Such a short term risk may have a negative impact on the bank’s profitability. The study starts with a review of the bank risk management processes, and then discusses the enterprise risk management framework that guides the formation of the risk management processes and systems. In order to benchmark against international risk management practices, a comparative analysis is carried out to evaluate the risk management tendencies of bank risk management in South Africa and globally. The empirical findings reveal that most banks (i.e. eighty per cent of all local banks) manage the short-term interest rate risk by following the same process as the interest rate risk in general. The key elements (risk identification, measurement, mitigation and monitoring and reporting) of the banking book interest rate risk management are not linked together as a systematic process. This is not in line with the Basel II Accord to manage market risks through a process approach. The study also proposes a generic short-term interest rate risk management framework and in doing so, addresses some of the weaknesses of current risk management practices. Based on this framework, the South African banks may develop their own processes to manage such short-term banking book interest rate risk exposure. Some of the problems of bank risk management that come to light from the empirical findings, are summarised in the last chapter and may be considered for future research.
