Reduced tillage implements for management of an organic green manure: effects on nitrogen, weeds and wheat yield

Podolsky, Kristen 11 September 2013 (has links)
Reducing tillage in Canadian organic cropping systems is a priority to preserve soil quality and increase long term sustainability. Novel methods for management of cover crops offer farmers the opportunity to reduce both tillage and herbicide use during this phase of the crop rotation but require further investigation across a range of cropping systems. The objective of this study was to compare the blade roller, flail mower and wide blade cultivator (noble blade) with standard tillage for management of an annual pea-barley (Pisum sativum L. – Hordeum vulgare L.) green manure in the Canadian prairies. The experiment was conducted twice at Carman, Manitoba (long-term organic management) and Lethbridge, Alberta (previous herbicide and fertilizer use) from 2010-2012. The green manure was planted in spring of year 1 and grown until pea full bloom when five management treatments were applied; 1) standard tillage with a field disc 2) blade roller, 3) blade rolled once plus tillage in late fall and spring, 4) wide blade cultivator and 5) flail mower. Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was planted in spring of year 2. The effect of management treatment on surface residue, soil nitrogen, soil microclimate, weed population dynamics and subsequent spring wheat yield was evaluated. At Carman, managing green manure without tillage (blade roller or flail mower) significantly increased winter annual and perennial weed pressure and reduced soil nitrate availability; these factors contributed to wheat yield reductions in both years compared to standard tillage. Wide blade cultivation and blade rolling plus tillage maintained crop yield at one and both years, respectively, compared to tillage. Without sufficient mulch for weed suppression, soil disturbance was required to control weeds and ensure adequate nitrogen uptake in the crop. Replacing one tillage operation with blade rolling reduces energy costs and erosion risk without sacrificing yield. At Lethbridge, previous herbicide and fertilizer use masked the effect of green manure management. Markedly different results from Carman and Lethbridge emphasize that the adaptability of reduced tillage green manure management is site-specific due to differences in climate and cropping history. This research highlights important differences in the efficacy, erosion risk, weed control, nitrogen availability, main crop yield and energy savings associated with each management method.

Investigation of the blade roller for organic green manure management

Vaisman, Iris 22 September 2010 (has links)
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of using the blade roller for no-till/reduced tillage in organic green manure management. The study was conducted in Carman, Manitoba and Oxbow, Saskatchewan. In the spring, a pea/oat intercrop was seeded as a green manure. The green manure was terminated by rolling, tilling, or a combination of the two. The following spring, spring wheat was seeded. In the year of the green manure, measurements taken included: biomass, soil nitrogen, and ammonia emissions. In the year of the wheat, measurements taken included: soil cover, soil moisture, weed competition, soil nitrate-N, and wheat biomass. Results showed increased soil cover, minimal effect on soil moisture, delayed wheat development, an effect on weed communities, reduced rate of nitrogen release, and reduced wheat yield. No-till green manure management can therefore provide benefits of soil conservation and nitrogen conservation but may result in decreased wheat yield.

Stress and Fracture Analysis of a Class of Bonded Joints in Wind Turbine Blades

Chen, Chang 03 October 2013 (has links)
A simplified model is proposed to investigate the stress fields and the strain energy release rate (SERR) associated with cracks in bonded joints in wind turbine blades. The proposed two-dimensional model consists of nonparallel upper and lower shells with adhesive between the shells at the tapered end. Nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) is performed in a systematic parametric study of material and geo- metric properties. Two failure modes and their locations are predicted at different combinations of parameters: yielding at the outside end of the adhesive and interface cracking at the inside end of the bondline. Effect of the shell curvature on the stress fields is also considered. Based on the classic beam theory and the beam-on-elastic-foundation (BOEF) assumption, stress and displacement fields of the adhesively-bonded joint were determined by a new theoretical model to support the results from the numerical computation. The failure analysis is continued by studying the effects of manufacturing defects in the adhesive bond. Single and multiple voids are embedded to simulate air bubble trapped in the interface. The numerical and analytical studies are conducted to investigate SERR associated with the voids and results are provided to illustrate the effects of void position and void size.

Reflexos da suplementação de cordeiros com concentrado na pastagem tropical e no desempenho animal / Reflections of the supplement of lambs to concentrate: on tropical grass and animal performance

Campos, Neuza Maria Fajardo January 2014 (has links)
Brazil needs to insert the sheep meat market. For this to occur, behavioral changes within the production systems and all those involved with the activity are needed. The production of lamb meat quality in autumn it is extremely important for the regulation of supply and consolidation of the supply chain. Thus arises the need to review the supply of lamb for slaughter in the fall systems, taking advantage of the great potential of summer pastures in Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the supplementation of lambs on animal performance and pasture to slaughter in the fall. It was used 54 animals Texel and Corriedale, six animals per paddock with 0.1 ha each. The treatments were: Aruana only grass; Aruana more grass supplementation with 1.5% and 2.5% of body weight with diet. Was available to all animals, the offer of 4% body weight dry matter of green leaf. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of pasture was held. Was evaluated the lambs as the average daily gain, gain per hectare (L ha-1), body condition score and performed the evaluation of feeding behavior. The design was a randomized block 3, 3 treatments and 3 replications. There were significant differences among treatments for average daily gain per hectare (P = 0.0174), but there was no period effect. The largest gain was in treatment with 2.5% body weight supplementation, and the lowest with non-supplemented animals. For the variable height of the grass, the interaction between treatment and period was significant (P = 0.0373). It was noted a lower pasture where the lambs were not supplemented. Increasing stocking rate to be supplied 1.5% of body weight concentrate was not enough to show a significant difference from treatment without supplementation. The results show the potential increase in production and productivity with the use of 2.5% of body weight with concentrated, but with limited response when supplementation is only 1.5% body weight in tropical pastures. Despite the increase in production, supplementation with concentrate provided a strong negative impact on pasture structure and behavior of animals that should be considered when used concentrate supplementation in lamb finishing in tropical regions.

Analysis of gas turbine compressor fouling and washing on line

Vigueras Zuniga, Marco Osvaldo January 2007 (has links)
This work presents a model of the fouling mechanism and the evaluation of compressor washing on line. The results of this research were obtained from experimental and computational models. The experimental model analyzed the localization of the particle deposition on the blade surface and the change of the surface roughness condition. The design of the test rig was based on the cascade blade arrangement and blade aerodynamics. The results of the experiment demonstrated that fouling occurred on both surfaces of the blade. This mechanism mainly affected the leading edge region of the blade. The increment of the surface roughness on this region was 1.0 μm. This result was used to create the CFD model (FLUENT). According to the results of the CFD, fouling reduced the thickness of the boundary layer region and increased the drag force of the blade. The model of fouling was created based on the experiment and CFD results and was used to calculate the engine performance in the simulation code (TURBOMATCH). The engine performance results demonstrated that in five days fouling can affect the overall efficiency by 3.5%. The evaluation of the compressor washing on line was based on the experimental tests and simulation of the engine performance. This system demonstrated that it could recover 99% of the original blade surface. In addition, this system was evaluated in a study case of a Power Plant, where it proved itself to be a techno-economic way to recover the power of the engine due to fouling. The model of the fouling mechanism presented in this work was validated by experimental tests, CFD models and information from real engines. However, for further applications of the model, it would be necessary to consider the specific conditions of fouling in each new environment.

De forma geral, o estudo consegue demonstrar a existência de soluções tecnicamente viáveis para a problemática dos resíduos da indústria de pás eólicas / The manufacturing process of the blades that power the modern wind turbines and their disposal at the end of life may have negative impact on the environment. This work is aimed to solutions for recycling waste composite fiberglass /epoxy resin used in the manufacture of wind blades, both generated in the manufacture solid parts (later converted into powder by drilling) and the dust generated in the finishing process of the blades. Chemical recycling through the vacuum pyrolysis has been used in laboratory scale in order to reverse the wast in other industrial chemicals and recover the fiber for subsequent use. Experimental tests showed that the results depend on the optimization of the variables time and temperature, it was possible pyrolysis and eliminate up to 97% thermoset matrix contained in the composite after 30 min of reaction at 310ºC using babassu oil as pyrolysis liquid. Another possibility studied was to incorporate residues of epoxy composities. The results show that in principle there is a drop of up to 30% in tensile strength of the matrix when the waste is incorporated, although the modulus has increased by 25% with the addition of 10% waste composites. The residues were also tested in relation to their potential heat, resulting in average values between 9.9 and 18.6 KJ/Kg, which means that enterprises based in the burning of these can be considered risky, but feasible, for the generation energy. Overall, the study has demonstrated the existence of technically feasible solutions to the problem of residues in wind blade industry

Modelings, Simulations, Measurements and Comparisons of Monopole-Type Blade Antennas

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Two commercial blade antennas for aircraft applications are investigated. The computed results are compared with measurements performed in the ASU ElectroMagnetic Anechoic Chamber (EMAC). The antennas are modeled as mounted on a 13-inch diameter circular ground plane, which corresponds to that of the measurements. Two electromagnetic modeling codes are used in this project to model the antennas and predict their radiation and impedance characteristics: FEKO and WIPL-D Pro. A useful tool of WIPL-D Pro, referred to as WIPL-D Pro CAD, has proven to be convenient for modeling complex geometries. The classical wire monopole was also modeled using high-frequency methods, GO and GTD/UTD, mounted on both a rectangular and a circular ground plane. A good agreement between the patterns of this model and FEKO has been obtained. The final versions of the solvers used in this work are FEKO (Suit 6.2), WIPL-D Pro v11 and WIPL-D Pro CAD 2013. Features of the simulation solvers are presented and compared. Simulation results of FEKO and WIPL-D Pro have good agreements with the measurements for radiation and impedance characteristics. WIPL-D Pro has a much higher computational efficiency than FEKO. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2014

Etalement de fluides complexes / Spreading of complex fluids

Deblais, Antoine 08 December 2016 (has links)
This study shows the rich phenomenology of a simple act : spreading complex solutions such as emulsion and polymer solution on a plate, by using a rigid and flexible blade respectively. Here, we experimentally study the flow of the solution over the course of its spreading. During the spreading and in certain conditions, different phenomena occur, namely, emulsion inversion in the case of o/w emulsion or a contact line instability in the case of the polymer solution, which gives rise to the formation of polymer filaments with a well-defined wavelength and characteristic sizes. We showed, thanks to spreading phase diagrams, that the the existence of the instability (partial wetting regime) is separated to a domain where the solution cover the substrate. Spreading parameters such as the height of the scraper, spreading velocity or properties of the fluids turns out to be crucial. Finally, we take advantage of the instabilities to print a variety of interesting patterns for further applications.
