Tattoo Collecting: Living Art and Artifact

Kenney, Lauren 14 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the possibilities of the tattoo as a collectible. Specifically, three different modes of collecting and displaying tattoos; as a living museum on the body of the tattooed subject, as a skin specimen separated from the body and displayed in a variety of museum settings and, finally, as an image abstracted from the body in the form of photographs of tattooed sitters. Implicit in this journey from body art to artifact is a consideration of the changing meaning and significance of tattoos in the evolving discourse of visual culture. Once regarded as markers of social deviance - as symbols of exclusion or marginalization - tattoos have become a much more popular and widely accepted form of body art - signs of community, affinity and inclusion. The growing popularity of tattoos has also led to a reconsideration of their status as an art form, an elevation of what was once considered a 'low art' process to the realm of high art. This shift has only recently led to an increase in scholarship about tattoos within the discourses of both art history and visual culture. In this thesis I examine this new scholarship about tattoos in visual culture, and then go one step further by considering tattoos as visual objects within the culture of collecting. Specifically, I examine tattoos as collectible 'souvenirs', as specimens and, when reproduced as photographs, as socially resonant signs of identity and meaning. These case studies examine tattoo art from various perspectives. Primarily, as art collected on the body, but also as imagery existing separate from a physical form, just like the majority of collected artwork.

We recognize the increasing popularization of the tattoo and the existence of a correlation between tattoos and identity; also we consider that the tattoo, as a body modification, is a distinction and identification mark. Having those assumptions established, we propose in this research an understanding of the dimensions the tattoo has negotiated in a identity construction to the inked person. Those are our purposes: to understand how the tattoos meaning is built and the importance these signs hold in the selfimage construction to the inked person; to analyze how positions of subject, location and price influence in the process of choosing the images and the parts of the body in which the tattoo will be inked; finally, to establish the differences between “commercial” and “artistic” tattoos, both from the tattoo artist and the inked person point of view. These purposes will be achieved through a bibliographic, a participant observation in three different tattoo studios with different profiles and, finally, semi structured interviews with the tattooed persons.

This work attempt to investigate how the body modifications done by the subjects of the transsexualities can give a different meaning to the correspondence among sex, gender, sexual orientacion and desire, being able to generate new matrixes of intelligibility from the identities and multiple strategies used by crossdressers, drag queens, travestities and transexuals. For this, the we made the research using the participant observation and semi-structured interview technique in spaces of sociability of transexualities on downtown Recife. Moreover, we collate some medical, psychoanalytical, and human sciences theories with empirical data collected. After that we have a brief theorical passage through the sex, gender, body, sexuality, speech and subjectivity's conceptions that take us to discussions about representations and performance, setting up the basis of a transexualities experience.

With this dissertation, I aim to problematize how are produced the femininities of the bodies from the techniques of body modification in two areas in which teaching is directly acting: on the street and in cyberspace www.suicidegirls.com. I believe that the body modification as the use of techniques that make the people acquire characteristics in their bodies that resemble in some of their biological constitution, from the application of tattoos, piercings, scarification, brandings ... To put this work, I consider science as one that is understood in the discourse of those who produce it, in other words, the wills for truth of the subject and not the hegemonic, which presents the correct answer, the only legitimate, which was based on mathematical discoveries in the middle of the sixteenth century. The science here is based on the production of other knowledge, other values in society, creating other rules, from other knowledge. These, to produce knowledge, has educated and pedagogizing bodies, in other words, it produces the subject and sets their modes of being and acting in society. From this perspective, think about the production of femininities, from the use of techniques of body modification is put under suspicion the “metanarrativas” that are built as true for women. To this end, the foundation to work from the perspective of Cultural Studies and Gender, specifically using the present poststructuralist, with reference to the analysis of Michel Foucault. Studies had ruled on this case consider both the bodies and genders of the people as a social and cultural construction, involved in power relations. To develop the research, I used research instruments and also mapping of discourse analysis, Foucauldian perspective. So with this study using two pedagogical spaces considered informal, where relationships happen, to analyze how femininities are produced on bodies with the use of techniques of body modification: Avenida Rio Grande, along with the Largo Dr. Pius in City of Rio Grande and the site Virtual www.suicidegirls.com. These spaces allowed me to understand the different ways that women, by using the techniques of body modification, conduct their femininity, is following the rules that are placed as truth or, conversely, creating other ways to produce them. In other words, I could see that the use of piercings, tattoos, dilators, scarification and many other techniques of body modification identified so far show that there are different ways to provide women in society. Some devotees of body modification, both those who move in certain streets of Rio Grande (RS) as those who are models in www.suicidegirls.com, advocate, in some cases, a break up, a resistance to the ways of producing femininities by constructing other forms of being a woman, following other approaches, other models for their bodies. However, some of the women present a speech that such techniques are ways to enhance the legitimacy femininity to them.

[en] MEN REDESIGNING MEN / [pt] HOMENS QUE REDESENHAM HOMENS

BIANCA MENDES LEMOS 21 June 2004 (has links)
[en] Men redesigning Men is a research that intends to contribute with a reflexion on the expansion of the field of Design by the means of an analysis of the possibility of the insertion of the human body redesign within its boundaries. The main objective of this dissertation is to show the passibility of construction and, why not, deconstruction to which things, as well as the body itself, are subjected once existing under the aegis of culture, society and politics. In the post-modern moment that we live at, if it does exist, it is possible that the Designer, in an expanded sense, may be considered the maestro of these transformations. This dissertation also relies on a few events and theories to present how artists, scientists and philosophers comprehend and discuss these questions about the interferences practiced on the body, its possible obsolescence, the never ending quest for beauty and the quarrels between naturality and artificiality regarding the body. Thus, it concerns the possibility of construction of a theory of this activity, the Design, haven of a professional which can project objects as well as rethink his own structure. It is expected that this is not done for the sake of an ilusory and inexisting purity, but carrying on with his own designations, as men within our human condition.

Never judge a book by its cover: a sociological examination of body art

Teeter, Allison M. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work / Robert K. Schaeffer / In recent years body modification practices such as the arts of tattooing and body piercing have experienced an increase in popularity. A close examination of previous research conducted on the topic revealed a dichotomous categorization of these practices as either acts of deviance or self-expression. In an effort to add to the research that strives to portray 'body art' as a means of identity formation, the current study took a qualitative approach to the examination of body modification practices and the individuals who participate in them. Throughout 2007, fifteen in-depth interviews were conducted with college-age individuals who had at least one visible piece of 'body art,' and were currently living in or around Manhattan, Kansas. An emphasis was placed on what motivated the individuals to participate in the arts of tattooing and/or body piercing and how they felt the physical alteration of their body had affected their subsequent social interactions and identity. A careful review of the interview transcripts revealed that the respondents had chosen to participate in body modification practices for a variety of reasons. Nine analytical categories were then created in an attempt to explain the key motivations for their participation in these practices and ultimately call into question whether these practices should continue to be viewed as "deviant." The findings also demonstrated that there is still a certain amount of stigma associated with the arts of tattooing and body piercing, especially within the workplace. Although some businesses and organizations require their employees to keep their artwork concealed during business hours, others simply refuse to hire any individual who has a visible piece of 'body art.' Thus, the knowledge gained from the respondents and their experiences provided insight into the thought processes involved in the decision to participate in body modification practices as well as shed light on discriminatory, appearance-based hiring practices.

(Re)Figuring Pedagogical Flesh: Phenomenologically (Re)Writing the Lived Experiences of Tattooed Teachers

Howard, Tanya K January 2012 (has links)
This hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry describes the lived experiences of three visibly tattooed teachers and what it is like to sense their tattooed flesh while they are at school. Lived experience descriptions were collected during in-depth interviews and from personal reflective writings conducted by the study author, who is also a tattooed teacher. Using hermeneutic research approaches outlined by Max van Manen and Linda Finlay, lifeworld descriptions of visibly tattooed teachers are presented in the form of anecdotal passages that urge readers to ‘step into tattooed skin’. Drawing from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception, Luce Irigaray’s work on intersubjectivity, Michel Foucault’s notion of the disciplinary gaze, theories of the look in education forwarded by Madeline Grumet, and Judith Butler’s notion of subversive bodies, meanings are made of tattooed teachers’ experiences of adopting uncomfortable teacher identities and then growing comfortable in their professional roles. Through hermeneutic analysis, five main themes are presented, constituting the “essences” of the phenomemon of living as a visibly tattooed teacher: Trying to Fit; Mis-fit; Fit. You? Fit You!; Fitting In; and One Size Does Not Fit All.

Nursing Student Perceptions of Health Care Worker Appearance and Compassion, Skill, Knowledge, and Trustworthiness

Quick, Sophia 01 May 2021 (has links)
Background: Many health care facilities enforce strict dress code policies prohibiting visible body modifications, including tattoos, piercings, and vibrant hair colors. As popularity of body modifications among young adults surges, facilities may be forced to adapt policies as these workers enter the workforce. While some evidence exists related to patient perceptions of health care workers with body modifications, there is little about how nursing students perceive them. This study aimed to describe undergraduate, pre-licensure nursing students’ perceptions of health care worker appearance on compassion, skill, knowledge, and trustworthiness. Methods: Using cross-sectional design, an on-line Likert-type survey was used to collect data from 137 undergraduate, pre-licensure nursing students in Northeast Tennessee. Participants viewed photos of male and female workers with various body modifications. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: There were statistically significant differences between groups across all four variables. Male and female health care workers without body modifications were rated highest on all four variables. Male and female with tattoos were rated the second highest. Male and female with facial piercings were rated lowest. The female health care worker color, irrespective of body modification type, was rated higher than the male counterpart across all variables. Conclusion: Results suggest that nursing students may perceive health care workers without body modifications to be the most compassionate, skilled, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. Students may perceive tattoos as more acceptable in the workplace than facial piercings or vibrant hair colors. Students may perceive body modifications as more acceptable for females than males.
