Climate, Environment and Malaria during the Prehistory of Mainland Greece

Morgan-Forster, Antonia H. January 2011 (has links)
Interpretations of osteological remains from mainland Greece during the 1960-1980s led to the suggestion that the most virulent form of malaria, Plasmodium falciparum, was prevalent between the Mesolithic and Late Bronze Age (c. 8700 cal. BC-1100 cal. BC). Although disregarded over the past decade, the theory has regained support in recent years from osteological, epidemiological, environmental and DNA studies. However, the presence of this strain of malaria in prehistoric Greece remains controversial. This thesis evaluates 1) the palaeoclimatic conditions of the Aegean between the Mesolithic and Late Bronze Age and 2) the palaeoenvironmental conditions of three archaeological settlements, with the aim of ascertaining whether the climatic and environmental conditions were as conducive for P. falciparum and the mosquito vectors as the osteological evidence suggested. Equal consideration is given to the so-called ‘lesser strains’ of malaria, P. vivax and P. malariae, the significance of which is considered to have been underestimated in previous studies.

A Comparative Formal Investigation Of The Bath-gymnasium Complex Plan Type In Roman Asia Minor As A Reflection Of Romanization And Urban Renewal

Dinler, Oya 01 August 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis investigates the formal aspects of the bath-gymnasium complex plan type which was developed in Asia Minor during the Roman era in relation to the development of the the imperial thermae in Rome, the capital city of the Roman Empire. Close resemblances in the architectural configuration of bath-gymnasium complexes and imperial thermae are analyzed in order to provide complementary insight concernin the evolution of Roman bath architecture and bathing tradition. The comparative investigation of the formal aspects of the plan types reveals the contribution of Asia Minor and its role in influencing the architectural developments in the capital. The thesis concentrates on the development of the bath-gymnasium complex plan type in Asia Minor and the imperial thermae in Rome in order to elucidate the outcomes of mutual influence in criss-crossing Greek and Italic features. Crucial to this investigation ,s the understanding of the multiple effects of historical processes such as Hellenization, Romanization and urbanization that were synthesized in the bath architecture of the capital and the provinces. Also, the symbolic, cosmological, and political aspects of Roman bath architecture are highlighted ,n this thesis.

Kopf, Bertram 15 September 2002 (has links) (PDF)

Guided waves in rectangular integrated magnetooptic devices / Lichtführung in rechtwinkligen integriert magnetooptischen Bauelementen

Lohmeyer, Manfred 08 September 2000 (has links)
By means of numerical simulations, the thesis aims at improvements in the understanding of light propagation in dielectric optical waveguides, with emphasis on nonreciprocal integrated magnetooptic devices. The results include: Proposal, implementation, and assessment of the WMM mode solver (Wave Matching Method) For waveguides with piecewise constant, rectangular permittivity profiles, the calculation of guided modes can be based on a local expansion into factorizing harmonic or exponential trial functions. A least squares expression for the mismatch in the continuity conditions at dielectric boundaries connects the fields on neighbouring regions. Minimization of this error allows to compute propagation constants and mode fields. The procedure has been implemented both for semivectorial and fully vectorial mode analysis. The piecewise defined trial fields are well suited to deal with field discontinuities or discontinuous derivatives. Numerical assessment shows excellent agreement with accepted previous results from other methods. The WMM turns out to be effective especially for structures described by only a few rectangles. It yields semianalytical mode field representations which are not restricted to a computational window. The fields are therefore perfectly suited for further processing, e.g. in the framework of various kinds of perturbation theory. Perturbational geometry tolerancing procedure Shifting the location of a dielectric boundary in the cross section of a waveguide with piecewise constant refractive index profile results in a permittivity perturbation in a layer along the discontinuity line. On the basis of these thin layer perturbations, perturbational expressions for the derivatives of the propagation constants with respect to geometry parameters are discussed. The approach provides direct access to wavelength dependences. Comparison with rigorously calculated data shows that the accuracy is sufficient to yield reasonable tolerance estimates for realistic integrated optical devices, at almost no extra computational cost. This perturbational approach allows to establish and to quantify guidelines for geometry tolerant devices. Numerical assessment of nonreciprocal wave propagation The coefficients of coupled mode theory for the magnetooptic permittivity contribution allow a classification of the influences of gyrotropy on guided wave propagation. For mirror symmetric waveguides, one identifies the dominant effects of TE phase shift, TM phase shift, and TE/TM polarization conversion, for polar, equatorial, and longitudinal magnetooptic configurations, respectively. Layered equatorial magnetooptic profiles lead to the well known phase shifters for TM modes. Analogously, sliced asymmetric polar magnetooptic profiles yield phase shifts for TE polarized modes. Simulations of rib waveguides with a magnetooptic domain lattice predict effects of the same order of magnitude as the phase shift for TM modes. Phase matching as a condition for complete polarization conversion in longitudinally magnetized waveguides can be realized with selected geometries of raised strip waveguides or embedded square waveguides. Based on coupled mode theory for hybrid fundamental modes, the analysis of the performance of such devices in an isolator setting includes birefringence, optical absorption, and an explicit perturbational evaluation of fabrication tolerances. A magnetooptic waveguide which is magnetized at a tilted angle may perform as a unidirectional polarization converter. The term specifies a device that converts TE to TM light for one direction of propagation, while it maintains the polarization for the opposite direction. A double layer setup with two magnetooptic films of opposite Faraday rotation is proposed and simulated. Designs of three waveguide couplers for applications as isolators/circulators and polarization splitters Three-guide couplers with multimode central waveguides allow for a remote coupling between the outer waveguides. While the power transfer is a truly multimode interference process, one can identify two different regimes where either two or three supermodes dominate the coupling behaviour. Numerical simulations show reasonable agreement between the main coupling features in planar an three dimensional devices. The specific form of the relevant modes suggests the design of integrated optical isolators and circulators. Both planar and three dimensional concepts are investigated. A radiatively coupled waveguide polarization splitter should be designed such that the entire dynamic range of the coupling length variations is exploited. This is easily possible with a three dimensional raised strip configuration. Combination of two magnetooptic unidirectional polarization converters and two radiatively coupled waveguide based polarization splitters leads to a concept for a polarization independent integrated four port circulator device. The simulation predicts a total length of about three millimeters.

Tapia Martínez, Olga 08 October 2009 (has links)
Cajal bodies (CBs) are nuclear structures involved in the biogenesis of small nuclear and nucleolar ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs and snoRNPs) required for nuclear processing of pre-mRNAs and pre-rRNAs, respectively. CBs concentrate the protein coilin, a molecular marker of this structure, snRNPs, the survival of motor neurons factor (SMN) and proteins shared with the nucleolus Nopp140 and fibrillarin. CBs are transcription-dependent structures, but the mechanisms of molecular assembly of these structures are poorly understood. In this study we used inmunofluorescence, ectopic expresion of CB proteins and biochemical methods to analyze the importance of two posttranslational modifications, methylation of coilin and conjugation of SMN with SUMO1, for the molecular assembly of CBs. The cell line MCF7 has been used as a model of endogenous hypomethylation due to the lack of MTAP gene. Coilin hypomethylation leads to the disassembly of CBs and nucleolar relocation of unmethylated coilin. This effect reverses in transfected cells expressing the gene MTAPwt, indicating that the degree of methylation of coilin directs its nuclear destination. On the importance of sumoylation in the assembly of CBs, we have demonstrated the existence of a subset of CBs which concentrate SUMO1 and the SUMO1 conjugase Ubc9. In neurons, we detected the presence of SUMO1 during the reformation of CBs in response to stress. Immunoprecipitation experiments confirm the molecular interaction of SUMO1 with SMN and demonstrate that lysine 119, carrying the SMN sumoylation consensus sequence, is essential for regulating the number of CBs.

E-procurement adoption, its benefits and costs

Mahdillou, Hossein, Akbary, Jawid January 2014 (has links)
This thesis report aims at illustrating and describing how e-procurement can contribute in creating value and reducing overheads associated with the procurement process through adopting and implementing e-procurement systems and applications in the supply chain network of an organization. It is an obvious fact that e-procurement plays a vital role in managing the supply chain especially now that outsourcing has become very common in the business market environment around the world. The main purpose of our bachelor thesis work is to find out how e-procurement can contribute in creating value, reducing cost and gaining more profit out of the procurement process. Since this thesis report is meant to cover the available literature on procurement and e-procurement only limited areas of the supply chain management is presented. When it comes to methodologies, available literatures on procurement and e-procurement have been covered to extract the most plausible information and data related how e-procurement contributes in creating value and reducing costs and overheads in the supply chain management. First a framework of modern procurement processes and stages is given as a basis and then e-procurement is treated being the technologies and key factors in implementation of e-procurement.This thesis work tries to consolidate prevalent ideas as well as facts that have been tested by means of academic researches carried out by scholars of the field and interdisciplinary of industrial engineering. / Program: BSc in Industrial Engineering - International Business Engineering
