The relationship between creative potential and self-regulation among high achieving young adults with the moderating effects of parenting stylesHeo, Nanseol 01 May 2014 (has links)
Previous literature has suggested that creative students often have difficulties adapting to academic and social contexts, even if they are intellectually gifted (Goertzel & Goertzel, 1960; Kim, 2008). Creative individuals' difficulties in social adaptation can be explained better by introducing the concept of self-regulation, since self-regulation has been found to be a strong predictor of one's academic success, school engagement, and peer social acceptance (Duckworth & Seligman, 2005). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between creative potential and self-regulation among gifted young adults. In addition, this study aims to examine the moderating effects of parenting styles on that relationship.
Participants in this study were 311 high achieving students who participated in the Honors Program at the Midwestern University. Their creative potential was assessed by the Runco Ideation Behavior Scale (Runco, Plucker, & Lim, 2001). Results showed that there was no relationship between creative potential and short-term self-regulation. However, creative potential was positively related to the long-term self-regulation of gifted young adults after controlling the effect of gender and semester in the college/university, although it was a small correlation (partial r=.132, p
Findings from this study refute the position that gifted individuals' creative potential may relate negatively to their self-regualtion capacities Findings also suggest that authoritative parenting can nurture children's long-term self-regulation without hindering creative potential development.

Encounters and relations between people with different cultural backgrounds tend to be primarily discussed in terms of exclusio, prejudice and conflict. This thesis focuses on the creative aspects of intercultural encounters. The starting point is that the parties involved sometimes succeed in avoiding the latent conflicts between cultures by acting trategically. The aim of this thesis is to increase understanding of the possibilities represented by intercultural encounters and to identiy the strategies employed by the actors who try to deal with the contrasts and dilemmas involved in encounters with other peopl with different cultural experiences, identities and methods. The empirical part of the thesis is based on four qualitative case studies that are characterised by rather positive co‐operation between the actors in the intercultural encounter, i.e. "immigrants" and the majority society in Sweden. The empirical data are based on 45 individual interviews, two focus group discussions and a number of minor observations made in the inland part of northern Sweden, where the case studies were carried out. The principal result of this research is that the actors begin to see culture as a possibility when they find themselves in a osition where they feel obliged to change their established patterns of behaviour, due to some sort of crisis situation. The strategies used by the actors to deal with culture conflicts can be divided into intra‐group strategies and inter‐group strategies. The former attempt to achieve relative homogeneity between the competing groups in the field of the intercultural encounter, while the latter illustrate how the participants deal with what they experience as differences. Four inter‐group strategies have been identified: 1) the status quo strategy, 2) the loose coupling strategy, 3) the selective strategy and 4) a culture mixing strategy. The latter three are characterised by innovative combinations that organise the existing cultural elements in a meaningful way These strategies result in new cognitive structures, whose limits maintain the balance between different cultural elements.

This study aims to relate the process of creative work of craftsmen in the city of Juiz de Fora in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with the development of the welfare of manual skills and generating income. This development will be through the technique of mosaic art, showing that the experience of pleasure is observed when the speech reflects the context in which the work must be flexible, group or individual, providing the workers make use of their creativity to feel useful, productive and valued. In this search, the second qualitative basis, were interviewed 9 (nine) craftsmen and one visual artist working with the mosaic. They were randomly selected following the methodology of snowball.
