CFD simulation of particle matter inside an automotive car and the purification efficiency of cabin air purifier / CFD-simulering av partiklar inuti en personbil och reningseffektiviteten hos kabinluftrenare

Ljung, Sebastian January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis work was to study the airflow patterns and the particle distribution in a generic car cabin in order to evaluate the air quality and find how it can be improved. A 3D CAD model was created using the Solidworks software program and meshed using ICEM CFD software. The ICEM CFD software was used to generate the mesh and ANSYS FLUENT was adapted for the simulation. In total, 12 different cases were simulated by considering different inlet velocities and vent setup. The predicted results were further used to analyze the airflow and particle distribution in the entire car cabin. With higher inlet velocity there were more particles being transported to the rear part of the cabin. In general, the particle concentration was higher in the front of the cabin when they were introduced through the inlets, especially with low inlet velocities. Opening the recirculation vents resulted in a slight reduction of the flow to the rear side and reduced the particle distribution accordingly. When smoke particles were introduced in the rear seats, they mostly stayed in the rear of the cabin, especially with low inlet flow velocities as the air did not mix sufficiently. Overall a higher inlet airflow velocity reduced the number of particles that were trapped on the front and rear seats. However, an increase in the number of particles that were trapped on the ceiling, floor and walls were obtained.

Structure-Borne Vehicle Interior Noise Estimation Using Accelerometer Based Intelligent Tires in Passenger Vehicles

Achanta, Yashasvi 22 June 2023 (has links)
With advancements in technology, electric vehicles are dominating the world making Internal Combustion engines less relevant, and hence vehicles are becoming quieter than ever before. But noise levels remain a significant concern for both passengers and automotive manufacturers. The vehicle's interior noise can affect the overall driving experience and even the safety of the driver and the passengers. The two main sources of vehicle interior noise are attributed to air-borne noises and structure-borne noises. A modern automobile is a complicated vibration system with several excitation sources like the engine, transmission system, tire/road interface excitation, and wind noise. With electric vehicles on the rise, the engine and transmission noise is practically eliminated, and effective preventive measures and control systems are already in place to reduce the aerodynamic-based noise, vibrations, and harshness (NVH) in modern automobiles making the structure-borne noise the most crucial of the noise sources. Tire/road interaction noise being the most dominant among the structure-borne noise is the main concern of the vehicle interior noise. The two main sources of vehicle interior noise induced by the tire pavement interaction noise are structure-borne noise induced by the low-frequency excitation and air-borne noises produced by the mid and high-frequency excitation. The present study tested an all-season tire over varying operational conditions such as different speeds, normal loads, and inflation pressures on an asphalt surface. Two tri-axial accelerometers attached 1800 apart from each other on the inner liner of the tire of a Volkswagen Jetta were used to measure the circumferential, lateral, and radial acceleration data. An Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and velocity box (VBOX) were instrumented in the vehicle to measure the acceleration at the center of gravity (COG) position of the vehicle and the longitudinal velocity of the vehicle respectively. The vehicle was also equipped with a modified hybrid of Close Proximity Testing (CPX) and On-Board Sound Intensity (OBSI) sound measurement systems which were designed and manufactured in-house to measure the tire/road interaction noise at the leading and trailing edges of the tire/road contact patch. Another microphone was instrumented inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle at the passenger's seat right ear position over the tire mounted with the sound measurement system to measure the vehicle interior noise as interpreted by the passengers in the vehicle. Two data acquisition systems coupled with a real-time Simulink model were used to collect all the measured data, one for the noise signals and the other for velocity and acceleration signals. The focus of the current study is to review different generation and amplification mechanisms of the structure-induced tire/road interaction noise and find the relevant dominant frequency ranges of the vehicle interior noise induced by the structure-borne noises using already established physics-based models and correlation techniques. It also aims to find correlations between tire acceleration, vehicle interior noise, and tire pavement interaction noise and their effect on different operational conditions like load, inflation pressure, and velocity. All the signals are studied in the time, frequency, and spectral domain and insights have been drawn on different tire/road noise generation and amplification mechanisms. / Master of Science / Structure-induced vehicle interior noise is one of the main concerns surrounding the automotive NVH industry and tire/road interaction noise being the most dominant source among the structure-borne noises affecting the vehicle interior noise is a major problem to the tire and automotive manufacturers nowadays. It leads to discomfort for the driver and the passengers in the vehicle and can cause fatigue, which in turn can directly affect the vehicle's safety. Several attempts have been made to reduce vehicle interior noise using statistical, physics-based, and hybrid models, but the research is still nowhere near completion. The current study aims to identify the frequency ranges affecting the structure-borne noise-induced vehicle interior noise and uses data-driven approaches in estimating the vehicle interior noise using only the acceleration of the tire. A test setup was designed and developed in-house where a tri-axial accelerometer embedded inside the inner liner of the tire measures the X, Y, and Z acceleration signals. Several microphones are instrumented at the tire/road contact surface and inside the passenger cabin to measure the tire/road interaction noise and the vehicle interior noise. The longitudinal velocity of the vehicle and the accelerations at the center of gravity of the vehicle have also been measured. Multiple data-driven models have been developed to directly predict the vehicle interior noise and tire/road interaction noise using the accelerometer data. This research is directly helpful for the automotive and tire industries by giving them insights on designing and developing quieter tires by using data-driven approaches and further using these with active control systems can mask the vehicle interior noise to acceptable levels in real-time.

Avaliação da qualidade do ar de cabines de veículos automotores recém-manufaturados / Evaluation of new vehicles cabin indoor air quality

Valvassori Filho, Auzebio 23 September 2008 (has links)
New motor vehicles cabins may be critical when considering the internal air quality, because concentrations of volatile organic compounds are at levels higher than the outdoors. Certain substances present in the cabin air can be harmful to humans according to their toxicity, mainly in the big cities. Assessment of the cabin air becomes necessary. In this study, cabin air quality was assessed and 7 popular new vehicles containing same interior trim materials were evaluated. A total of 46 volatile organic compounds were identified, with 14 of them were carbonylic compounds and 32 are aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated compounds and a nitrogenated compound. The carbonylic compounds were identified and quantified by the liquid chromatography and other VOCs only identified by GC-MS. Cabin air vehicles studied showed the following average concentrations found for carbonylic compounds ( µg/m3) in a descending order: formaldehyde (165.3), acetone (67.5); acetaldehyde (56.8); Isovaleraldehyde ( 40.8); propionaldehyde (21.1); butyraldehyde (17.9); crotonaldeído (14.9); hexaldeído (14.9) Valeraldehyde (9.8); dimetilbenzaldeído-2.5 (9.3); the - tolualdeído (8.4), p / m - tolualdeído (6.8); acrolein (4.2) and benzaldehyde (3.8). Concerning the other VOCs the following compounds were identified: methylbutane, which had the highest percentage of relative abundance, 8.5%, followed by other hydrocarbons with relative abundance between 5 and 2%, 2,7,10-trimetildodecano, 2.2 ,6- Trimetildecano, ciclopentano, 2,3,4-trimetildecano, n-pentane, 3.6-dimetilundecano, 4- metildodecano, dimetildodecano-4.6, 3.6 and 1.2-dimetildecano-dimetilbenzeno. Two halogenated hydrocarbons were also found, and triclorofluormetano had the biggest relative abundance percentage 5.7%, and a nitrogen compound, the acetonitrile with 5.4%. The benzene compounds identified were: 1.2-dimetilbenzeno, ethylbenzene, methylbenzene, 1- ethyl-3-methyl, ethyl-1-and 3-methyl 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene which comprise 6.6% of relative abundance. 1.2-dimetilbenzeno was the most abundant aromatic compound with relative abundance 2.5%. Results also showed that VOCs were released by studied vehicles interior trim materials.

It’s the Organization, not the Zombies: A Critical Organizational Interrrogation of Cabin in the Woods

Herrmann, Andrew F. 03 April 2014 (has links)
Recent media scholars have taken, as their focus, relationships between qualitative research methods and examinations of contemporary media texts (e.g., Fox, 2013; Manning, Dunn, & Stern, 2012; Meyer, 2012). The purpose of this panel is to further examine these relationships. Participants will demonstrate how a qualitative research method (e.g., ethnography, autoethnography, narrative analysis, textual or discourse analysis, audience studies) can be used to study contemporary television and film texts (e.g. Coronation Street, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Orange is the New Black, Mad Men, Cabin in the Woods, The Butler). Participants will first discuss their particular method and then provide an exemplar of that method as they examine their chosen media text(s). To assist with the audience discussion of these methods and texts, participants will also include a brief clip/excerpt of their chosen texts.

Sentimental Literature as Social Criticism:Susan Warner, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Emma D.E.N. Southworth as Active Agents, Negotiating Change in the United States in the Mid-Nineteenth Century

Cann, Jenichka Sarah Elizabeth January 2013 (has links)
Detractors of sentimental literature argue that such novels are unoriginal and concerned primarily with emotions. Feminist scholars redeem the reputation of sentimental literature to an extent. At present, a multitude of approaches present sentimental authors as active agents, engaging with public issues. Building upon the scholarship of prominent feminist historians and literary critics, this thesis provides direct evidence that three female authors embrace the responsibilities of being a social critic. The Wide, Wide World (1850) by Susan Warner, Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1851) by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and The Hidden Hand (1859) by Emma D.E.N. Southworth provide unique commentaries on the separation of the private and public spheres, market revolution, and religion. Decisive differences between the authors’ opinions reveal a high degree of engagement with the public issues.

The Aussom Cabin : an early nineteenth century residence in Huntington County, Indiana

Bubb, Louis A. January 2005 (has links)
The wane of the North American Fur Trade (ca. 1800-1850) was the result of resource depletion, military action, social unrest, increased European settlement and the increased proximity of diverse cultural groups. The effects of these occurrences upon the residents of Aussom Cabin Site have been analyzed. Both historical and archaeological analyses were utilized, offering a verified and accurate account of the demise of the fur trade and its effect upon a specific population.Attention is paid to the development of the fur trade industry, as well as to the manner in which it affected regional lifeways. The location of the Aussom Cabin, both chronologically and socially, within this process has been explicated. The chain of occupation at the site has been established, the morphology of the cabin, and the lifeways of its inhabitants have been surmised. The manner in which the cabin was razed and the depositional integrity of the Aussom Cabin have also been determined. / Department of Anthropology
