Vad patienten vill och vad patienten får : En litteraturöversikt om dödshjälp / What the patient wants and what the patient gets : A literature review about EuthanasiaStenberg, Anna, Sundström, Elisabeth January 2017 (has links)
Background: In 1997 it became legal for patients with a terminal illness to receive assistance to end their lives in Oregon, USA. The same legislative change came into force in the Netherlands in 2002. These changes have not occurred in Sweden, however a debate is ongoing in terms of the option to legalise active and physician assisted suicide and the ethical and moral aspects of this issue. Aim: The aim is to identify factors leading to patients with a diagnosis of cancer or ALS requesting assistance to end their lives. Method: A literature review and analysis was carried out, in combination with an overview of 11 ethically audited scientific articles. Results: The conclusion was divided into four main themes; depression and burden without a sub theme, pain with sub themes suffering and fatigue, existential values with sub theme hope and hopelessness and finally quality of life with the sub theme strength. Discussion: There is an evident interest in the discussion about legalising assisted suicide in Sweden, amongst patients as well as medical professionals. The patient's desire may be overridden as the subject is tabooed, thereby reducing patient autonomy and the patient´s right to self-determination. Patients' attitude towards death assistance has been discussed on the basis of theories of Helga Kuhse, Katie Eriksson and ICN's ethical code. Resultat: Resultatet delades in i fyra huvudteman där tre teman hade underteman.

Legal issues relating to the treatment of persons living with cancerMaimela, Charles 06 1900 (has links)
Cancer is regarded as a global disease and one of the leading killer diseases in the
world. The reason why cancer is so widespread and often misunderstood stems from
multiple factors, namely, the lack of knowledge about cancer, unfair discrimination of
persons living with cancer, inadequate or inappropriate treatment provided to patients,
the stigma attached to cancer, misdiagnosis and late diagnosis of persons living with
cancer, as well as the inadequate provision of screening programs to detect cancer at
an early stage.
The combination of these issues raises alarming medico-legal problems that merit
further attention. The thesis will explore the origin, nature, philosophical and clinical
aspects pertaining to cancer, as well as legal issues related to cancer and oncology.
The study will conclude with recommendations aimed at mitigating and addressing the
shortcomings that exist in the medico-legal framework. The study will also draw on a
legal comparison of relevant South African, English and American laws and
regulations. Since this thesis entails focussing on medico-legal principles, the study
will draw on aspects of medical law, labour law, law of contract, law of delict,
constitutional law and criminal law. / Private Law / LL. D.

Cultural factors associated with management of a breast lump amongst Xhosa womenMdondolo, Nosipho 01 1900 (has links)
A qualitative research design and an ethno-nursing research method were used to identify cultural factors influencing Xhosa women's health seeking behaviours associated with breast lumps. Focus group interviews were conducted to obtain data.
The research results revealed that these Xhosa women with breast lumps did not disclose some cultural factors which influenced their health seeking behaviours associated breast lumps. Registered nurses, sharing the same culture and language as the Xhosa women, revealed that Xhosa women with breast lumps sought treatment from traditional healers, prior to seeking medical care from the hospital and/or clinics. When they arrive at the hospital/clinics the breast lumps have often progressed to advanced ulcerated breast cancer, with poor prognoses and poor treatment outcomes.
Xhosa women lacked knowledge about the management of breast lumps. Health promotion efforts should address this issue at Primary Health Care services in the Eastern Cape. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

große Bandbreite an Bewältigungsverhalten demonstrierten.
Object of research of this thesis is the specific behaviour of seriously ill and dying humans
coping with their impending death and being members of a society having an ambivalent attitude
towards death. People's different and individual ways of coping cannot always be sufficiently
explained by the current use of phasing models. In this context the "Coping Model"
by Richard S. Lazarus and his stress research group seems to be helpful in understanding
dying humans. In how far this comprehension model from a secular branch of research can
be supportive of pastoral counselling is the objective of this thesis. Counselling dialogues
with different persons who show a wide range of coping form the basis of this research. The
challenge of this paper was to observe and sense humans in their death experiences from a
broader point of view in order to identify as much as possible kinds of impulses crucial to
their coping behaviour. Analysing the behaviour of dying humans led to new perspectives
on spiritual guidance. Tantamountly, this has its consequences for spiritual dealing with dying
humans. The comprehension of the biblical Christian idea of man and a detailed knowledge
of coping research can, by all means, be interactive and thus show positive results as
both respond to a person's individuality and support them in their own ways of approach to
life and death. Finally, this leads to an intensive dialogue between patient and pastor who
can have the courage and the confidence in letting the person find his own way of coping.
The different kinds of approach of the coping model research offer far-reaching impulses to
various pastoral questions going even beyond terminal care. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.Th. (Practical Theology)
