The status of words of neologic effect in delirious construction

Pincerati, Walker Douglas, 1979- 14 August 2018 (has links)
Ela situa para o delirante uma significação especial / Abstract: Psychoanalysis assumes that there is a structural difference between language in neurosis and language in psychosis. This study adopts this thesis and discusses the status of words of neologic effect in psychotic discourse. By considering the data of LC, a subject with psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia, we attempted (i) to identify, describe, and analyze the words of neologic effect in such discourse, situating them either as apices or as condensations of "delirious ideas" and signifiers moving in the stream of a delirium; (ii) to compare these words with possible forms in language, thereby deducing the specificity of the neologic effect against what Lexicology calls a neologism; and (iii) to discuss the function of such words in the production of opacity in psychotic discourse and in the delirium architecture. The Lacanian reading of Freud takes delirium as a process of significantization which aims at attenuating anguish and re-establishing the relations of the delirious person, as an inhabitant of language, with reality. We conclude that the word of neologic effect works by condensing in a signifier ideas and signifiers at stake in the delirium. Such words gesture at a special signification for the delirious subject / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística

As fenícias de Eurípides: estudo e tradução / Euripides\' Phoenician Women: study and translation

Waldir Moreira de Sousa Júnior 08 December 2014 (has links)
This study presents Euripides´ Phoenician Women as its subject under discussion. Myth and Ritual are the two aspects under which the play will be investigated in the first part: Chapter 1 seeks to understand in what manner Euripides displays the mythological stories into the production of the tragedy´s plot: in this case, the multifarious literary traditions are analysed in conjuction with dramatic concerns; Chapter 2 seeks to understand the religious background of the play within its ritualistic context, that is, it will be suggested that the textual structure exposes dionisiac implications due to its poetic performance. In the second part, one reads the play wholly translated into portuguese.

This dissertation intends to investigate law in Marx’s late economic texts, from 1857 onwards. Our object could only thus be the objectification of capitalism in its classical path, which includes England and France. If Marx was to unveil the modern society’s internal legality of motion, nothingmorenaturalthantodiscoveritsimmanenttendenciesinitsgreatestconcretedevelopment. Asithadtobe, thisimpliestheinvestigationoftheclassicalpathtotheobjectificationofcapitalism. Consequently, the most substantial Marxian analyzes in his economic texts, our object, point to the extraction of the objective motion of law in the classical path, in the reciprocity of the whole. From this investigation we conclude that there are in Marx two stages in law, each with two main features. At first, in the wake of capitalism in the classic path, we have the abolition of the remnants of feudal law, which hindered the nascent accumulation, and the institution of a law harmonic to capitalism, which actualizes its objective presuppositions. This is the legislation to compulsion to work, which extends work as compulsorily as later legislation shortens it. The two traits of the first moment, therefore, are the end of feudal law and the institution of a law of primitive accumulation, which rearticulates Roman law on the basis of nascent modern production. Both are the defining moments of the creation of an appropriate working class to capital. Later, with the maturing of the capitalist mode of production, the operation of its immanent laws leads, in turn, to two traits. On the one hand, the self-protection of the working class over the unbridled impulse of capital and its growing agitation lead to the institution of a normal working day, which is, at the same time, a rational bridle to the blind unrestraint of capital and expression of the maintenance of an objective assumption of accumulation, which is an adequate working class. On the other hand, we have the generalization of these conditions of competition, which normalizes the conditions of extraction of the relative surplus value and takes capitalism to a higher level, where a remarkable development of the productive forces happens. We then debate with the Brazilian marxist critique of law that claims direct lineage to Marx, even though it puts aside the study of the material determinations of law. Considering the rigor that is required in determining law in our object, it is vital to determine what is law in Marx. A secondary problem, however, is to determine what it is not, or why the materiality of law, as exposed, is not grasped by the Marxist literature that deals with the subject. And what there is not is a general theory of law. It follows from this what is, in our view, the theoretical exhaustion of the currents we oppose. Disinclined to capture the materiality of law, both in classic and in other paths, they did not seriously address the issue.

Transformative incrementalism: a grounded theory for planning for transformative change in local food systems

Buchan, Robert Bruce 19 January 2018 (has links)
Local Food Systems (LFS) is a relatively new concept in geographical and planning research. Academic, professional, and public interest in LFS is in part a reaction against the social, environmental, and economic effects of a dominant Production Agriculture paradigm (Lyson, 2004), and growing concern with the potential impacts of climate change on the food supply (Ostry, Miewald, and Beveridge, 2011). While there is a growing public and policy interest in making transformative change in LFS, there is a lack of theoretical work that addresses how change processes in food systems occur. In this study, a classic Glaserian grounded theory research project investigated the subject area of local food system planning. The primary research goal was the development of a theory grounded in the experience of practitioners, elected officials, and members of the public. The emergent theory, called Transformative Incrementalism (TI) describes the social process underlying planning initiatives focused on achieving significant (transformative) change in local food systems. The data for this research project are drawn from interviews with 29 elected officials, public stakeholders, and planning staff in five communities with local food system initiatives. In addition, 10 member checking interviews were also conducted. The core category identified in the emergent TI theory was Power, with Values, Praxis, and Outcomes being other main themes. From this research, Power could be defined as the ability, through authoritative and non-authoritative influence, to have an effect on a person, process, action, or outcome. Values act as sources of power to the extent that they motivate and drive the actions of individuals and groups. Praxis includes activities designed to create, use, and maintain power, such as building relationships with other people that will give ongoing support for food planning initiatives. Outcomes include broader system and social changes resulting from local food system planning processes and activities. The main findings from this dissertation underscore the fact that the role of power has been largely ignored in the planning literature (Friedman, 2011; Flyvbjerg, 2012; Assche, Duineveld, and Buenen, 2014). Power is the main driver of change; therefore, a lack of understanding about what power is and how it operates would seem to compromise the ability of planning efforts to be effective. This research identifies and illustrates the interrelationship between the political, public, and bureaucratic spheres of actors, and examines how values, praxis, and outcomes are pivotal to transformative change in food planning initiatives. Transformative change is achieved through a long process of incremental efforts (programs, policies, and actions) by actors within the public, political, and bureaucratic groups whose values and beliefs converge and align over time. The incremental efforts are intended to support a transformative change goal. / Graduate

A SILOGÍSTICA CATEGÓRICA DOS ANALÍTICOS ANTERIORES DE ARISTÓTELES

Rasch, Elton Luiz 13 September 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present dissertation provides a reconstruction of the categorical part of Aristotle s (384 BC 322 BC) syllogistic, from the standpoint of the theory given in Prior Analytics, a piece of the Organon. Throughout the work it will be explained the methods which Aristotle has proposed to give support to his theory, many of them suffering only occasional changes to the present days. So, on one hand, this demonstrates the relevance of syllogistic on heuristic respects, and on the other, it shows that modern logic inherited much from Aristotle s one - either by abandonment or improvement of parts of his theory, either by embedding their methods in more refined formal structures. Initially, I ll give an overview of the theory and its relation to the epistemology proposed by Aristotle, as well as the assumptions derived from his metaphysics. Next, the operation of the methods used to prove Aristotle s theory will be demonstrated. Finally, an heuristics for the theory will be outlined, also proposed by Aristotle himself. Evidently, it is not intended to argue that Aristotle's logic is suitable for scientific research nowadays, as it seems to have been conceived at the time of its emergence and rise. However, through this research it is possible to note that the simplicity behind the syllogistic theory gives us a relatively underrated power today, especially by the emergence of modern logic.

Classic Period Projectile Point Design Variation in the Tucson Basin and San Pedro Valley, Arizona

Ryan, Stacy Lynn, Ryan, Stacy Lynn January 2017 (has links)
Similar projectile point types were used by groups living over a wide geographic region in central and southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries A.D. Substantial changes that occurred in southeastern Arizona at this time include population aggregation, the arrival of northern migrant groups, and an increase in obsidian use. An analysis focusing on two sub-regions, the Tucson Basin and the San Pedro Valley, was conducted to explore how social, technological and environmental factors influenced projectile point technology during the Classic period (A.D. 1150–1450) in southeastern Arizona. Projectile point metric and morphological attributes and obsidian source data were used for comparisons within both of the sub-regions. Despite differences in social relations, obsidian exchange networks, and access to large game, comparisons between sites in the northeastern and northwestern Tucson Basin did not reveal significant differences in projectile point types. However, a good deal of variation in base morphology is evident regardless of type among the Tucson Basin sites. Projectile points from Kayenta enclaves in the Lower San Pedro Valley are overwhelmingly made of obsidian, but do not possess significantly different attributes from those used by local groups. Notable variation was seen in the small sample from the Upper San Pedro Valley, which may be attributed to the lack of influence from groups living to the north. Overall, the similarities in projectile point forms correspond with the growth of social networks during the Classic period. Although the small size of these points restricts their usefulness for signaling group identity, variation in base morphology, serrated blade edges, and other small details may continue to inform on the learning traditions or cultural preferences of groups in the region. Future research should expand the study area to include the Upper Gila region of New Mexico, where groups were living close to the extensive Mule Creek obsidian source.

Mindreading matters : A study of Jane Eyre and Emma, in search of empathic response in the narrative, through theory of mind, for the purpose of scaffolding

Holm, Stina January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this study is to use a cognitive approach to analyse two novels that are considered to be part of the British literary canon: Jane Eyre (1847) by Charlotte Brontë and Emma (1816) by Jane Austen. The study aims to utilise close reading and thematic analysis of human emotion. The themes are as follows: the fear of losing a loved one, morals and values in relation to love and marriage, and feelings of disgust, aversion, antipathy and shame. Quotations from each novel are analysed with the theoretical framework of “theory of mind” and placed within the emotional frame of the thematic analysis. The aim of this is to provide possible scaffolding for learners of English as a foreign language, in an attempt to make canonised literature more easily accessible. Scaffolding may be needed for Swedish EFL learners to overcome the language barrier presented in literature from the 19th century. Further benefits of emotional scaffolding conform to requests of the Swedish Agency of Education and the Curriculum’s demands that education be conducted in such a way as to promote empathy, compassion and understanding for fellow humans. The analysis shows that strong emotional connection in the novels provide ample opportunity to analyse readers’ possible empathetic response, thus resulting in the opportunity for these responses to serve as scaffolding as well as an opportunity to improve empathetic ability.

A biomechanical investigation of torsion and classic metaphyseal lesions

Camp, Madeline 20 February 2021 (has links)
The classic metaphyseal lesion (CML) is considered to be a strong indicator of physical abuse in infants. These fractures extend through the metaphysis of a long bone near the growth plate, disrupting the trabecular bone structure. The mechanism(s) behind this fracture type are not entirely understood. The present study investigated experimentally the possible loading conditions required to generate CMLs in pig models. Fifty hindlegs from stillborn pigs were tested in torsion using a mechanical testing machine and a digital torque wrench. Fractures to the metaphysis that resemble CMLs were produced during a combined loading event which applied torsion to the knee joint (distal femur, proximal tibia, and proximal fibula). A visual assessment of the physeal surface of each specimen was performed after testing, and classic metaphyseal lesions were identified by comparison with findings from Love et al. (2011). The only fractures seen in both the femora and tibiae were CMLs, with both bone types having 60% (30 of 50) total fractures. The frequency of total fractures on fibulae was less, with 42% (21 of 50). The frequency of CMLs in the fibulae, however, is lower than the frequency of total fractures (38%, n=50), as physeal fractures also presented in some of those bones. Thus, the CML was the most common type of fracture produced due to the torque applied to the bones during testing. When assessing the number of CMLs that occurred on each limb, nine limbs had only one CML present, while 28 limbs had one or more CMLs. Additionally, complete CMLs made up 51.9% (41 of 79) of the total number, while partial made up 48.1% (38 of 79). Out of the 150 bones tested, 79 (52.7%) showed fractures resembling CMLs in human infants. A fracture was 35% more likely to occur in a femur or a tibia than in a fibula, and multiple CMLs per specimen were more common than single CMLs. The physeal surfaces of the specimens recorded as having CMLs showed damage to the trabecular bone. Three physeal fractures were noted; one Type IV physeal fracture on a proximal tibia and one on a proximal fibula, and a Type II physeal fracture on a proximal fibula. No diaphyseal fractures of any kind were produced. Further investigation of these conditions is encouraged to gain more insight into the injury mechanism.
