Mediakonvergensie as internasionale fenomeen – drie Afrikaanse dagblaaie en werknemerspersepsie

De Beer, Linda 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The arrival of the Internet and digital technology the past decade has revolutionised the media industry worldwide. Newspapers cannot exist separately from other media forms any longer. Newspaper companies have increasingly started to experiment with the incorporation of the electronic media, such as the Internet, in their newsrooms. The term media convergence originated in an attempt to give meaning to the phenomenon whereby different media forms come together or exist in synergy with each other. The purpose of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of media convergence from a newspaper perspective. The focus is firstly on developments on the international media front, whereafter the emphasis is on South Africa. A Research/field study is aimed at determining the knowledge and perceptions of media convergence of the editorial teams of Media24’s three Afrikaans sister newspapers – Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad. Different definitions of media convergence were considered in an effort to formulate an appropriate definition for the purpose of this study. In terms of this definition media convergence entails the coming together or synergy between different media entities within the same company. A technologically advanced environment with digital multimedia content management systems is conducive to successful convergence. The characteristics of the digital and multimedia newsroom are discussed in a separate chapter. A literature study was undertaken to give an overview of international media convergence practices and existing research on the topic. The focus is not only on how media convergence manifests itself in different parts of the world, but also on the attitudes toward and perceptions of the phenomenon by journalists. The South African media landscape and examples of convergence is discussed, with specific reference to Media24, owner of Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad. Non-empirical research by means of a survey amongst 60 respondents was conducted to test the knowledge and perceptions of the editorial teams of these three newspapers on media convergence. Multimedia newsrooms operated with the assistance of digital technology is a common phenomenon in many countries. Cooperation across media also exist in the majority of newsrooms in South Africa, but the phenomenon is not as conceptualised locally as in the rest of the world. Differences in the structures of media companies, as well as divergent legislation, have a significant effect on how media convergence manifests itself in a specific country or newsroom.

ABSTRACT This research brings up the topic of Television University Web - a study on the TV UESC. To investigate this issue, I took as a research field TV UESC - a TV as a university extension project implemented by the Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz, em Ilhéus, Bahia - with the aim to analyze and discuss the uses of this modality television by students and teachers of Social Communication, which are part of this extension project as a means of dissemination of audiovisual products made at the university and as a tool for structuring new forms of teaching and learning. I tried to find, understand and propose ideas about the elements that point to a learning process in the creations of the university called TV on the web, identifying the ways in which assimilation of web and its potential to lead a learning process. The research follows the qualitative approach, the ethnographic type, which requires the researcher to act as the main instrument in gathering and analyzing data, and a mediator during all the time and worrying about the evolution of the phenomenon and not with the final results in search of new ways of understanding reality. Were used as instruments for data collection interviews, conducted with teachers and scholars who make up this TV University, and document analysis, from the TV UESC environments on the internet (Facebook, YouTube and Twitter) and the project request an open channel sent to the Ministério das Comunicações and the Plano Nacional de Outorgas 2011. With this study it was revealed that while dealing with the worldwide web does not represent a challenge for young scholars and teachers need to understand that exercise the logical continuation of environments created in cyberspace is of fundamental importance, since open fronts work on the web, and several addresses that are not satisfactorily maintained, can result in opposite effect, because the public values the spaces that offer constantly new and immediacy. It was noted also that this knowledge cannot be restricted to a group of students who had access to adequate facilities for the development of these capabilities. The collaboration among peers is what will lead to the spread of this knowledge to a greater number of individuals, enabling appear other learning opportunities, which are independent of formal education - the learning in cyberspace, based on discoveries, encounters, shares, collaborative construction and ownership of information and communication technologies by the young students. It was also noted the urgency of the field of education, broadly speaking, be prepared to deal with the training of individuals who need to be able to work in the contemporary world.

You tell stories, we click on them : ciberliteratura(s) e novas experiências na criação de histórias / You tell stories, we click on them : cyberliterature and new experiences in creating stories

The lately technological innovations (together with social, political and economical transformations) have made possible countless changes in the human communication. The relations among sound, text and image have been reshaped within the multimedia spaces (JEWITT, 2005) as well as the reader¿s participation ¿ that is now a (co)producer, too. Facing that scenario, Snyder (2010) states that a single theory is not capable of explain the complexity, variety, diversity and innovation showed through the new media in a so liquid social context as it is the contemporary one (BAUMAN, 2013). Aiming to analyze the probable differences between digital storytelling productions (or cyberliterature) and traditional printed materials, the specific goal of this work is to understand which reading skills may have arisen because of the new literary experiences in the cyberliterature field. This study is initiated approaching some diffused views found in a variety of media (films, books, songs, videogames etc) about mankind and technology relationship. That approach is needed because we believe reading is a situated social practice (COPE, KALANTZIS, 2000) and the readers¿ education should be based on reflections which question, for example, dichotomic discourses (i.e. men x machines, utopia x dystopia) that are disseminated in our society. This doctoral thesis has an interdisciplinary perspective, the one we believe is the most appropriate to deal with a multidimensional theme as the cyberliterature is. Concepts as hybridization by Santealla (2003, 2007), remediation, by Bolter and Gruisin (2000), hypertext by Landow (2006), multiliteracies (COPE, KALANTZIS, 2000), cyberliterature (HAYLES, 2209) and transmedia storytelling, by Jenkins (2008) are the theoretical bases of this research, essential to understand the ongoing reshaping processes occurring both within language and readers. In this research the mentioned concepts were worked through the analysis of the project called "We tell stories", conceived by the British branch of Penguin Press aiming to promote its authors and printed novels from its catalogue. The project wanted to develop stories based on different kinds of media and platforms which should include levels of interaction between the materials and the readers (the reader had actually the power to change the sequence of some events in a number of stories). The analysis conducted in this thesis leaded us to conclude that ¿ even though there are still some common aspects between printed and cyberliterary productions - there are new ways of telling stories and these new materials demand the formation of a new kind of reader ¿ the multilerate ciber-reader / Doutorado / Linguagem e Tecnologia / Doutora em Lingüística Aplicada

Internet chat rooms: new meeting places for real identities

Marneweck, Maritha 27 October 2008 (has links)
M.A. / The anonymity associated with Computer Mediated Communication has formed the basis of an assumption that fantasy is a prominent feature of interactions taking place via the internet. Some of the literature argues that through fantasy identities all participants are able to become whoever they want to be, creating new virtual communities where equality between members is fundamental in their interactions. The findings of this dissertation suggest, however, that anonymity is limited by the reasons for chat room participation. Further, all the members are not equal, with a clear hierarchy evident as one logs onto the site. This study also argues that the concept of ‘virtual communities’ is not an accurate description of what occurs in chat rooms. The examination of chat rooms as ‘new meeting places’ for real identities is expected to generate more accurate theoretical postulations, in which the significance of the linkages between on- and offline realities is acknowledged. The extended case method was used to examine a chat room, known as Conversations, to investigate the linkages between online participation patterns and offline realities. Issues concerning identity and identity formation informed the principal motives in the selection of a research design that allowed the researcher extensive exposure to the members of this chat room. Since the emphasis was on the discovery of the meaning the chatters themselves attached to their participation, it was important to use a comprehensive research design. To this effect, three complementary data gathering techniques were employed; namely: virtual participant observation, face-to-face participant observation and in-depth interviews. Through this innovative research design the linkages between social opportunities, individual motivation and chat room participation were illuminated. / Meera Ichharam Chris Bolsmann

Creating a Sense of Presence in Remote Relationships : A concept of Calm Ambient artifact

Rahman, Nahian January 2021 (has links)
Loneliness is a growing social problem that affects people from different age groups. Studies have shown that loneliness is prevalent more in young adults and the elderly demographic. Loneliness can pose serious health issues like cognitive malfunction, heart disease, stroke, depression, etc. People who stay alone from friends and family tend to feel lonelier. Conventional communication tools like a phone or video calls or using social media applications can help the users connect with people but also have adverse effects. As a result of this, the potential of an alternative nonverbal mode of communication needs to be explored. The research aims to understand individuals' behavior, traits, and hidden needs when it comes to loneliness. The purpose is to suggest an alternative way of communication that creates a sense of presence and ensures mental well for the people living alone and suffer from emotional loneliness. The concept of Calm and ambient technology has been explored in this thesis as an alternative means of communication. Users’ needs were gathered from eight semi-structured interviews, and two stakeholders were identified. Over forty ideas were generated from brainstorming. The ideas were sent to twenty individuals through snowballing. The response from them was analyzed and narrowed down by using concept screening and concept scoring. The final concept was a device called ‘One home lamp.’ The device uses light to show the presence of remote family members or loved ones to a person living alone. This concept product was then evaluated through ‘Mankoff’s heuristics’ to see its credibility as a calm ambient artifact.
