Existentiella konfigurationer : Om hur förståelsen av livet tar gestalt i ett socialt sammanhang / Existential Configurations : On how the understanding of life is constituted in a social context

The thesis contributes to the research field of education, or more specific to the field of religious education. The aim of the thesis is to interpret how young adults of today describe and understand their lives, with a specific focus on existential themes, and furthermore, to develop useful concepts that can help us understand individual meaning-making in a social and cultural context. The meaning-making of young people and how they explore and develop their understanding is, in the thesis, seen both as an individual process and at the same time something socially shared. The theoretical understanding of the social context takes its point of departure in Berger and Luckmann’s theory about the social construction of reality. The methodological approach is empirical and the study is based on 21 deep-interviews with men and women between 19-29 years old. Their statements are analyzed using a hermeneutic - interpretive method. The thesis gives a picture of the young adults’ understanding of death and the meaning of life. But the study also addresses vital existential themes for the young adults around the questions: who am I, what do I want to choose and where am I heading. Still another important theme is insecurity. One important contribution of the thesis is the development of new concepts that describe the young adults’ understanding of their lives, in terms of personal and shared configurations. In the material I have seen three different kinds of shared configurations and I speak of those in terms of: life-views, taken for granted perspectives and institutions. The dynamics that the personal configurations give examples of can be understood both in light of the shared configurations but also in light of the personal agency that the young adults show signs of.

Design of two-axis capacitive accelerometer using MEMS

Approved for public release; distribution in unlimited. / MEMS technology is rapidly taking an important role in today's and future military systems. MEMS are able to lower the device size from millimeter to micrometer and maintain and sometimes surpass the performance of conventional devices. This thesis encompasses the knowledge acquired throughout the MEMS courses to design a two-axis capacitive accelerometer. The required acceleration and operating temperature range were Š50g in each axis and -40ʻC to +80 ʻC, respectively. The accelerometer was also needed to survive within a dynamic shocking environment with accelerations of up to 225g. The parameters of the accelerometer to achieve above specifications were calculated using lumped element approximation and the results were used for initial layout of it. A finite element analysis code (ANSYS) was used to perform simulations of the accelerometer under various operating conditions and to determine the optimum configuration. The simulated results were found to be within about 5% of the calculations indicating the validity of lumped element approach. The response of the designed accelerometer was 7 mV/g and with sensitivity of 1.3g at 3dB. It was also found that the accelerometer was stable in the desired range of operation including under the shock. No presente trabalho apresentaremos alguns aspectos do problema Newtoniano de n Corpos. Estudaremos o caso de dois corpos, que tem solução direta, embora não seja possível obter todas as variáveis como função do tempo. No caso n maior ou igual a 3 mostraremos que não existe método para integrar este problema via quadraturas. Podemos tirar apenas algumas informações sobre o caso geral, como a Identidade de Lagrange-Jacobi, o Teorema de Sundman-Weierstrass entre outros. Veremos alguns casos de soluções particulares, que serão chamadas de soluções homográficas. Nestas soluções a forma geométrica da configuração inicial dos corpos é preservada durante o movimento. Veremos condições necessárias sobre as configurações iniciais para que seja possível obter estas soluções. Mostraremos uma relação existente entre estas soluções particulares e os pontos críticos de uma aplicação, que associa a uma configuração a energia total e o momento angular total do sistema. Nestes vários casos, cairemos numa mesma equação algébrica, que será chamada de equação das configurações centrais. Mostraremos, em seguida, que as equações de configurações centrais são equivalentes a um outro conjunto de equações algébricas, que servem também para calcular as chamadas configurações centrais, porém, com estas equações as simetrias do problema ficam mais claras, às vezes. Faremos algumas aplicações diretas destas equações algébricas. Uma subclasse interessante da classe das configurações centrais são as chamadas de equações diferenciais empilhadas, nas quais um subconjunto próprio dos corpos também forma uma configuração central. Nos dois últimos capítulos veremos alguns exemplos de configurações centrais deste tipo, em especial aquelas onde podemos retirar uma massa e ainda ter uma configuração central. / In this work we present some aspects of the Newtonian n--body problem. We study the case of two bodies, which have a straightforward solution, although we can not get all the variables as functions of the time. For n greater or equal to 3 we show that there is no method to integrate this problem by quadratures. We can have just some information about the general case, as the Lagrange-Jacobi\'s Identity the Sundman-Weierstrass\'s theorem and others. We will see some cases of particular solutions, which will be called homographic solutions. In these solutions the geometric shape of initial configuration of the bodies is preserved during the movement. We will see necessary conditions on the initial positions that turn possible to obtain these solutions. We show a relation between these particular solutions and critical points of an application, that associate the total energy and total angular momentum of the system. In these several cases, we will fall in same algebraic equation, which we called of the central configurations equations. We show that the central configurations equations are equivalent to another set of algebraic equations, which are also used to compute the central configurations, but with these equations the symmetries of the problem become clearer. We will make some direct applications these algebraic equations. An interesting subclass of the class of central configurations are called stacked differential equations, in which a proper subset of the bodies form a central configuration too. In the last two chapters we will see some examples of central configurations of this kind, especially those where we can remove a mass and still have a central configuration.

A amostra foi composta por 12 profissionais: médicos, enfermeiras, técnicas de enfermagem e agentes comunitárias de saúde. O instrumental metodológico utilizado foi a análise de conteúdo.Resultados: Os profissionais identificam e respeitam as diferentes configurações familiares, e adaptam o tratamento ao modelo de família que se apresenta. Conclusões: Disposição dos profissionais em lidar com os múltiplos arranjos familiares presentes no seu cotidiano / Objective this work aims to know the perception of a health care group professionals towards the families structures and their comprehension of a healthy family. Method it consists of a quality approach research, using the focal technical group with professionals of a health family program from Campo Bom – RS. The sample was composed by 12 professionals: physicians, nurses, nursing technician and health community agents. The methodological tool used was the content analysis. Results the professionals identify and respect the different family configurations, and adapt the medical treatment to the family that presents. This study may be characterized, under methodological aspects, as being empirical with qualitative analysis. In order to select the study subjects, our starting point was the 3,949 elementary public school students who had enrolled for Embraer school placement test in 2009/2010 class. These 3,949 students were divided into two groups: the registered and the approved ones. From the 200 students classified in the approved group we have chosen four students to be interviewed. The results confirm the hypothesis revealing that Embraer school students, although having come from public schools, have a social, economical and cultural condition that make them different from the popular classes, what makes them succeed on the placement test of that school. Besides that, there are family configurations that determine the success on the placement test for Embraer High School, of student from less favored social origins / Esta pesquisa está inserida na temática sucesso/fracasso escolar em meios populares e tem como objetivo evidenciar as condições de origem social dos alunos que foram aprovados no exame de seleção de 2009 da Escola da Embraer, em São José dos Campos - SP, a partir dos conceitos de capital social, capital cultural e capital econômico de Bourdieu (1998, 2004 e 2009), bem como o conceito de configurações familiares de Lahire (1997), aspectos que podem ter contribuído para sua trajetória escolar de sucesso. Este estudo pode ser caracterizado, em termos metodológicos, de natureza empírica com análise qualitativa. Para seleção dos sujeitos, deste estudo, partiu-se dos 3.949 alunos egressos do ensino fundamental da escola pública que se inscreveram para o exame da escola da Embraer, no ano de 2009/turma 2010. Esses 3.949 alunos foram divididos em dois grupos: inscritos e aprovados. Do grupo de 200 aprovados foram escolhidos 04 alunos para serem entrevistados. Os resultados obtidos confirmam as hipóteses, revelando que os alunos da Escola da Embraer, embora sejam alunos oriundos da escola pública, têm uma condição social, econômica e cultural que os diferencia das classes populares, o que lhes possibilita sucesso no exame de seleção da referida escola. From the mentioned field observation, it has been evidenced the occurrence of prejudiced practices against Bolivian students, who possess different ethnicity, culture, language and costumes. However, the current justification does not appear to us to go far enough to the comprehension of this phenomenon. This is because, in the assessed school environment, as well as in similar configurations, Bolivian and Brazilian students show not to have significant social and, mainly, economic differences (ELIAS, 2000). In other words, it came to understand these relations included in a process of competition for social positions, i.e., in a struggle for the conquest and maintenance of their own classification, and to avoid the disqualification (BOURDIEU, 2012). It is worth pointing out that the mentioned comprehension is elaborated without ignoring or minimizing the linguistic, cultural, religious and ethnic differences that exist and must be considered, but do not explain in all its complexity the practices of explicit manifestations of discrimination against the Bolivian student body on the part of their Brazilian schoolmates. In summary, the central intention of this study is to offer more elements to the ones already produced in the academic field intending a deeper comprehension about the relations of sociability between the Bolivian and Brazilian student body, by means of an analysis of behaviors, reactions, postures and speeches without, nevertheless, attributing value judgments, such as right and wrong, good and bad, victim and tormentor etc. It is intended, finally, to comprehend that in a society marked by social and economic inequality, such as the Brazilian one, the class struggle does not happen only between distinct social classes, but it may be manifested, in a very cruel and contusing manner, within a same social class / A presente pesquisa tem o objetivo de investigar, por meio da observação das relações estabelecidas entre alunos brasileiros e bolivianos em uma escola pública do município de São Paulo, as configurações intrínsecas à dinâmica das interações sociais entre estes dois grupos. A partir da mencionada observação em campo, constatou-se a ocorrência de práticas de preconceito contra discentes bolivianos. A justificativa corrente para este fenômeno como sendo resultado do choque de culturas, não nos parece ser suficiente para a compreensão destes comportamentos. Isto porque, no ambiente escolar apreciado, bem como em configurações semelhantes, os alunos bolivianos e brasileiros demonstram não possuir diferenças sociais e, principalmente, econômicas significativas (ELIAS, 2000). Em outros termos, passou-se a compreender essas relações inseridas num processo de concorrência por posições sociais, ou seja, em uma luta pela conquista e manutenção da própria classificação e para se evitar a desclassificação (BOURDIEU, 2012). Vale ressaltar que a referida compreensão é elaborada sem ignorar ou minimizar as diferenças linguísticas, culturais, religiosas e étnicas que existem e devem ser consideradas, mas que não explicam em toda sua complexidade as práticas de manifestações explícitas de discriminação contra o alunado boliviano por parte dos seus colegas brasileiros. Em síntese, a intenção fulcral desse estudo é a de oferecer mais elementos aos já produzidos no campo acadêmico para uma compreensão mais aprofundada acerca das relações de sociabilidade entre o corpo discente boliviano e o brasileiro, por meio da análise de comportamentos, reações, posturas e discursos, sem, entretanto, atribuir juízos de valor, como certo e errado, bom e mau, vítima e algoz etc. Intenciona-se, por fim, compreender que em uma sociedade marcada pela desigualdade social e econômica, como a brasileira, a luta de classes não acontece apenas entre classes sociais distintas, mas pode manifestar-se, de forma bastante cruel e contundente, no interior de uma mesma classe social

Development and application of a selected configuration interaction method : from dispersive interactions to photo-induced magnetism in Prussian blue analogues / Développement et application d'une méthode d'Interaction de configurations sélectionnées : des interactions dispersives au magnétisme photo-induit dans les analogues du bleu de Prusse

Dans une première partie, la structure électronique de deux membres de la famille des Analogues de Bleu de Prusse (ABP) a été inspectée à l'aide de méthodes basées sur la fonction d'onde. Dans l'ABP NiFe, un changement du couplage magnétique a été mis en évidence lors d'une déformation structurale locale. Basé sur les résultats obtenus pour l'ABP CoFe, un rôle clé dans le processus photomagnétique observé dans ce matériau est attribué aux lacunes cristallines. Dans une deuxième partie, un développement méthodologique a été mené jusqu'à l'implémentation de la méthode FRACCIS (FRAgmented Contracted Configuration Interaction of Single excitations). Elle permet de concentrer l'effort numérique sur un petit nombre de déterminants physiquement importants. De plus, elle constitue un outil d'analyse pour mesurer l'importance de certaines excitations dans le système inspecté. L'application à (H2)2 et C4H6 montre qu'une réduction majeure de l'espace d'IC est possible en gardant une bonne précision par rapport aux valeurs de référence. Ce travail contribue aux efforts vers l'analyse rationnelle de la corrélation électronique. / In the first part, the electronic structure of two members of the family of Prussian Blue Analogues (PBA) has been inspected using wave function-based methods. The NiFe PBA exhibits a change of the magnetic coupling under a local structural deformation. Based on the results obtained for the CoFe PBA, a key role in the photomagnetic process observed in this material is attributed to the crystal vacancies. In a second part, a methodological development has been carried out and has lead to the implementation of the FRACCIS method (FRAgmented Contracted Configuration Interaction of Single excitations). It allows to concentrate the numerical effort on a small number of physically relevant determinants. Furthermore, it constitutes an analysis tool to measure the importance of certain excitations in the inspected system. The application to (H2)2 et C4H6 shows that a major reduction of the CI space is possible while keeping good accuracy with respect to reference values. This work contributes to the efforts towards a rational analysis of electronic correlation.

Combinatorial Technique for Biomaterial Design

Combinatorial techniques have changed the paradigm of materials research by allowing a faster data acquisition in complex problems with multidimensional parameter space. The focus of this thesis is to demonstrate biomaterials design and characterization via preparation of two dimensional combinatorial libraries with chemically-distinct structured patterns. These are prepared from blends of biodegradable polymers using thickness and temperature gradient techniques. The desired pattern in the library is chemically-distinct cell adhesive versus non-adhesive micro domains that improve library performance compared to previous implementations that had modest chemical differences. Improving adhesive contrast should minimize the competing effects of chemistry versus physical structure. To accomplish this, a method of blending and crosslinking cell adhesive poly(季aprolactone) (PCL) with cell non-adhesive poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was developed. We examine the interaction between MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cells and PCL-PEG libraries of thousands of distinct chemistries, microstructures, and roughnesses. These results show that cells grown on such patterned biomaterial are sensitive to the physical distribution and phases of the PCL and PEG domains. We conclude that the cells adhered and spread on PCL regions mixed with PEG-crosslinked non-crystalline phases. Tentatively, we attribute this behavior to enhanced physical, as well as chemical, contrast between crystalline PCL and non-crystalline PEG.

Matrice de diffusion en interaction de configuration. Résonances orbitalaires et électronique moléculaire quantique

La miniaturisation des circuits électroniques, qui pourraient à terme être réalisés par une seule molécule placée entre des électrodes, tout comme l'amélioration des techniques expérimentales pour mesurer le courant dans une jonction moléculaire, nous oblige à développer des techniques de calcul du courant tunnel et de ses variations toujours plus précises. Nous développons dans cette thèse une méthode de calcul multi-électronique du coefficient de transmission qui est en fait une généralisation de la méthode mono-électronique ESQC. Celle-ci repose sur l'écriture de la matrice de diffusion de la jonction moléculaire dans une base de configurations à m+1 particules: 1 particule incidente, et m électrons localisés, mais non figés, sur la molécule. Cette méthode, nommée CI-ESQC, est par la suite utilisée pour comprendre les mécanismes multi-électroniques de transfert de charges dans la jonction tunnel aux énergies résonantes. Dans la suite, les interférences entre plusieurs résonances sont étudiées, de même que la décroissance du coefficient de transmission avec la longueur d'un fil moléculaire contenu dans la jonction. Finalement la méthode est appliquée à une jonction moléculaire susceptible de réaliser des portes logiques contrôlées en fréquence.
