The objective of this study is to analyze some poetic procedures in some of João Cabral de Melo Neto’s poetry, from some of his works, taking into account strategies of the language that work on the linguistic performance / semiotics of poetic sign. Cabral’s main works of poetry were analyzed, including: Pedra do Sono (1942); O Engenheiro (1945); O cão sem plumas (1950) and Educação pela Pedra (1966). The described and isolated categories were summarized as follows: referential illusion, semissimbolism, icon, index, signical mobility and the tridimensionality of the sign. These analysis categories were implied in the reading of some contemporary authors, who somehow represented the 80s and 90s, they are: Paulo Henriques Britto, Armando Freitas Filho and Carlito Azevedo. The author Aguinaldo José Gonçalves was also quoted in the text because of his book Vermelho (2000). The critical fortune of the role of the poet, who is the object of the thesis (JCMN), in the poetry of the 80s and 90s was built from counterpoints with the concrete movement, as well as relevant critics to Cabral’s poetry (João Alexandre Barbosa, Antônio Carlos Secchin and Aguinaldo José Gonçalves) and also the vision of the poet about his own work (Prose). It was possible to note John Cabral’s influence as the legitimate representative of the tradition of the verse in face of an attempt to downfall of this unit forward into the visual (sign) proposed by Concretes, as well as the connection that was developed between the 80s and 90s and the Modernism of Drummond and Manuel Bandeira. Finally, the analysis could prove convergences and divergences on elements such as visuality and plasticity, use of spatial and indexical elements, semissimbolism, iconicity, specific objectivity and subjectivity, which were points of articulation between the studied poet and the current poetry.

Codinhoto, Diego Jesus Rosa. January 2012 (has links)
Assim, partindo da hipótese de que nos poemas de Weintraub (1996; 2004; 2007) o baque, ou melhor, o choque se estabelece como norma, procura-se sistematizar como se configura essa experiência do choque nos poemas / Abstract: It is proposed in this study a survey of some aspects of contemporary poet Fabio Weintraub's work, which is composed by Sistema de erros (1996), Novo endereço (2004) and Baque (2007), and this research is focused especially in the last one. The main investigated aspects were the voice incorporation and/or the description narrative of urban subjects, usually the metropolitan's pariahs, in Weintraub's poems, such the drunk, the prostitute, the beggar, the homeless, the demented, the handicap, the elders, the invalid. These aspects were investigated from the perspective of two concepts by the Germany's philosopher Walter Benjamin (1985, 1989), "experience" (erfahrung) and "shock" (schock). Therefore, assuming that the Weintraub's poems (1996; 2004; 2007) the shock (baque, in Portuguese, is a concept similar to shock) is established as the rule, this work aims at systematize the shock experience in his poems / Mestre

L’avatar du Moi : l’évolution théorique de la poétique d’Antonin Artaud / The change of the ego : the theoretical development of the poetics of Antonin Artaud

Kumaki, Atsushi 25 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of the present thesis is to redraw Antonin Artaud's theoretical change of the notion of the ego, and to clarify the particular poetics that he established at the end of his life. The 1st part of the thesis focuses his early writings and especially the disease by which he could not think. What is the impossibility to think? For him this disease is only a psychological dysfunction. His disease consists in his incapacity to make, afterward, his internal thought correspond to the exteriorized words. At the time Artaud's ego remained minimized. In 2nd part, it is a matter of the theory of theater that he developed all his life. While his theory remains coherent in the sense that it is always about the relation between the text and the actor. But in the 30s as the text works as a double that haunts the ego of the actor and asked him a particular act, the text is always previous to the actor. On the other hand, in the 40s, Artaud does not accept any more the anteriority of the text with regard to the actor, what makes impossible the theater for the common sense of the term. The 3rd part approaches the hypertrophy of Artaud's ego. But this centrality of the ego is not solipsism because it is only afterward that he can say "everything went out of me". This rétrospectivité allows him to develop his own poetics through the reading of Les Chimères of Nerval where he establishes a new literary subject: subject of reading which dominates afterward the poetic space. This hypertrophy of the ego is not a symptom of the schizophrenia, but a theoretical support in the contemporary poetry, as the sound poetry or literalist poetry.

Influences de la poésie moderne française sur la poésie contemporaine persane : étude de l’oeuvre de Nâderpour, Honarmandi et Eslâmi-e Nodouchane / The influences of modern French poetry on modern and contemporary Persian poetry : study of the works of Nader Naderpour, Hassan Honarmandi and Mohammad Ali Eslami- e Nodouchan

Sarrafian, Chahab 15 June 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, we have tried to show the influence of modern French poetry on three contemporary Iranians poets: Nâder Nâderpour, Hassan Honarmandi and Mohammad Ali Eslâmai-e Nodouchane. They have studied at Sorbonne University. Since the period of Mashroutiat or constitutional monarchy the modern poets like Nimâ have written the poems in “vers libres” following the French models. The Iranians, always attached to classical forms, didn’t like this form of “vers libres”. The role of theses three poets has been to prepare the ground to make accept “le vers libre” by the Iranian readership. These poets are grouped in semi-traditional group and they use the images and the themes of the modern French poetry, they have prepared the ground so that “le vers libres” will be well accepted in Iran. They have chosen, in the most of their poems, the continual quatrains “les quatrains continus”. They have tried to use the themes and the images that come principally from the poetry of Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Valéry, Prévert….These poets are considered like à “bridge” by which the Iranian cross the classical poetry to arrive to modern Persian poetry. They have sometimes changed the place of the rhymes following the French models. Sometimes they have integrated the “tercets”, “quintils” and “sizains” in their poetry among their “quatrains” and this can be considered as a French influence.

Lorato le lenyalo mo mabokong a ga S.F. Motlhake (Setswana)

Phiri, Rebecca Batsile 21 January 2008 (has links)
This mini-dissertatation is aimed at critically analysing the importance of Setswana culture in relation to problems experienced today due to adaptation to Western culture. The mini-dissertation is discussed within the framework of the formalist approach. The proponents of this theory focus on treating literature as a special use of language that achieves its distinctiveness by deviating from distorting practical language. The concept of western culture and its influences on Setswana culture pertaining to love and marriage is strongly emphasised because it is the crux of this research study. Concepts such as acculturation, culture and influence as well as types of poems, also receive attention. Throughout the centuries, in Setswana poetry, love and marriage have been defined, analysed and portrayed in a positive manner. While in Western literature, the positive and the negative sides of love and marriage have been dealt with interchangeably on an ongoing basis. It is in this context that this research attempts to show how authors like Motlhake broke the cultural taboos, and wrote about the pains, miseries, disappointsments and conflict in love and marriage in particular. The investigation critically analyses the impact Western civilization has on the characters portrayed in motlhake’s poems which dwell much on the sorrows, bitterness and eventually divorce that are caused by marriage as portrayed in four of his poems. The content of these poems are analysed in the following chronological order that shows progression of:

Falling in love as portrayed in the poem : Noka ya lerato
Rejection asportrayed in the poem: A o a ntlogela
Reasons for celibacy: Goreng ke sanyale
Aspects of marriage in the poem:Lenyalo
The discussion of the style of the poems deals with the mood and intention of the poet. In this discussion, diction as style markers and stylistic techniques, are examined. It is clear that the poet Motlhake has used quiet a number of techniques, the most frequently used being repetition, elision, opposition, rhythm, figures of speech and imagery. These techniques have been used to highlight the bitterness, the anger as well as the themes of the poems which are: frustration in love and marriage and to go back to cultural practices in Setswana to avoid divorce. / Dissertation (MA(African Languages))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / African Languages / unrestricted

Still House

Edwards, Stephanie Lorraine 05 1900 (has links)
Still House is a poetry manuscript that explores the relationship between traditional gender roles and traditional poetic forms. The poems in this collections seek to revise the role of the homemaker and interrogate whether it is okay to take comfort and pleasure in tasks that are often labeled as feminine (i.e. cooking, baking, decorating, organizing, shopping, choosing outfits) while rejecting other parts of the homemaker archetype, such as subservience to and dependence upon men. Limited gender roles, patriarchy, sexist comments, capitalism, toxic masculinity, the cis-hetero-white-male gaze, trauma, physical pain, illness—these all can make it feel like we are not fully in control and ownership of our bodies, like something is encroaching. The poems in Still House are invested in using the poetics of embodiment (a poetics centered around telling stories about the body through immersive sensory details) to reclaim the body from trauma, patriarchy, and chronic pain and illness.

Around a Fire: Poems of Memory and Ritual

Mpuma, Nondwe January 2019 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This Creative Writing mini-thesis offers a deep meditation on what it means to speak to ritual and memory. The thesis is compiled from a collection of original creative work as well as a short reflective essay that present a critical analysis of the creative pieces in relation to the ideas I present. The first of these ideas being, memory as an encapsulation of the past, present and future as explored by writers such as W.G. Sebald and Toni Morrison. This collection examines an understanding of memory and ritual as being uncontained, as constant providers of stimulation for a range of literary responses. Ritual will be regarded primarily in the South African context where there is the intersection of the urban and rural landscapes both physically and metaphorically. In this regard I am thinking alongside writers such as Louise Glúck and Vangile Gantsho. The understanding of ritual is extended to the realm of spirituality where Christianity and African spirituality exist both harmoniously and in conflict. In short, the collection of poems and the reflective essay will explore the ways that memory and ritual interact in time and they will collectively contribute to the production of literature in South Africa.

(Evol)ution Is Love Spelled Backwards

Monteiro, Erica 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
erica monteiro’s collection, (evol)ution is love spelled backwards, is book of poetry created to give readers a glimpse into the personal politics of a woman of color coming into her own. The selected pieces are written as a journey through the writer’s heart. monteiro creates a mosaic through lyrical prose that is both tangible and illusive. Some of her pieces speak to current contemporary issues as in the poem “goodnight obama”, and others deal strictly with matters of love, as in “the last hurrah”. Each poem is flavored by its own unique brand of language reminiscent of twentieth century urban lyricism. monteiro’s “text speak” and new derivations on old words allow her to style shift between poetic lines, making for a creative blend of both academic and pedestrian imagery and symbolism. (evol)ution is love spelled backwards, is a mix of monteiro’s different voices, balanced to give her readers a unique perspective of her verses.
