From the domestic to the institutional home: the perception about work from the perspective of the social caregivers of nursing homes in Curitiba and the metropolitan region

Oliveira, Glacielli Thaiz Souza de 10 February 2017 (has links)
This research has as central theme the issue of gender and women's work. The objective of this study is to analyze the perceptions of work from the point of view of the social caregivers of homes of children in disadvantaged or at risks in Curitiba and Metropolitan Region. We define as specific objectives: to identify the role of the social caregivers of the home, based on the meanings assigned by them; Identify the weaknesses and gratifications in the work relationship of social caregivers in the context of the gender perspective; Analyze the labor relations that are submitted the social caregivers, as well as professional legislation. We conducted a qualitative methodological research. As a technique for data collection, we used the semistructured interview with 15 social caregivers of the selected institutions. The technique of content analysis was used. Regarding the analyzes and interpretations of the collected data, it was verified that the majority of the interviewees consider themselves to be somehow the mother of the institutionalized children and adolescents, which indicates, in principle, that they do not understand the profession of social caregivers as a job. It is also perceived that this fact makes it difficult to perceive the social and financial devaluation of the profession. The research pointed out the importance of the establishment of continuous training in the homes of children in disadvantaged or at risks, since in most of the interviews it was identified that in the work process, the social caregivers identify themselves as mothers of the children and adolescents who are accepted and do not recognize themselves as professionals Of care. Thus, one of the perceptions observed in the research was the need for the public sectors to determine how the contracting institutions of these professionals are empowering these women, as a way to provoke in these spaces the materialization of actions that minimize the devaluation of this profession.

Spina, Fabio Augusto 26 May 2017 (has links)
Evaluate contributions and limitations concerning the use of blog´s technology as teaching empowering tool, especially in primary education, is the subject of this dissertation. Through the blog employment, is expected to foster the development and mastery of scientific language, and consequent understanding of content related to natural science, allowing the recording and analysis of topics related to astronomy and science. The analysis presented throughout this work is based on the assumptions of the Meaningful Learning Theory of David Ausubel and collaborators, and the Zone of Proximal Development, concept of Lev Vygotsky Learning Theory. The data consisted of records made by students, teachers and other participants in blog, complemented by work done by students in the classroom. Data were analyzed using content analysis and, therefore, were organized into two sets: the first refers to students in the 5th grade, along 2011 and 2012; the second set relates to the same students in 2015 and 2016, in the 9th grade. Among the results obtained, it is highlighted that the shared use of communication technologies (ICT) encouraged curiosity and interaction between the participants of the blog, a fact that may have contributed to the improvement of language use and ownership of scientific concepts by students. It is expected that blogs as reported in this work could be a meaningful tool for scientific language appropriation for other realities and levels of education, and encourages the continued and collaborative learning among participants.

Uma proposta de estudo da autonomia docente de professores de ciências e de matemática em exercício / A research proposal about Science and Mathematics teachers’ teaching authonomy

Maciel Junior, Percy Fernandes 25 August 2017 (has links)
The present work has the objective of analyzing the possibilities of studying the autonomy of teachers in a group of teachers of Science and Mathematics, from their experiences in an educational robotics course, from the perspective of Contreras and Habermas. Such an approach seeks, without diminishing the importance of contents, to withdraw its centrality from the teaching / learning process, bringing the development of the communicative skills of the teacher and his apprentice to the stage of this process. The work is based on the study of teaching autonomy made by the Spanish teacher José Contreras, and the communicative aspects of the course and its subsequent analysis, the German theory model of the argument presented by the philosopher Jürgen Habermas in his work Theory of Communicative Action (TAC). The methodology describes in detail the activities developed along the course as well as the difficulties encountered for its execution, which end up influencing the reflection made by the teachers during the realization of the focus group, who provided us with the material with which we proceed to a content analysis based on the work of French researcher Laurence Bardin. The results point to a limiting effect in the construction of teachers' conception of teacher autonomy provoked mainly by the centrality that the curricular contents have in the educational processes. As a product of this research, a robotics course in WEB format is presented in which the contents are presented as required, both for the assembly and for the analysis of the proposed experiments.

Seeing the supplements : a rhetorical visual analysis with fitness advertisements

Harvey, Michael Joseph January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study uses a rhetorical visual analysis to investigate supplement advertisements within the top three fitness magazines, according to circulation, to provide a richer understanding of the message construction within the visual images the advertisements contain. The advertisements were selected at random over a time span of a year and a half within each of the magazines, totaling nine separate advertisements for analysis. The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent, if any, the construction of advertisements in men's fitness magazines operates as ideographic images establishing legitimacy as determined through application of Sonja Foss' rhetorical visual analysis methodology. Previous research has identified various analyses of visual images within the fitness culture, however, rhetorical visual analysis of supplement advertisement does not appear to have been investigated prior to this project which is the primary concern for the initiation of the current research. Employing rhetorical analysis in order to understand visual images provides a perspective that is imperative to identification of elements and functions of visual images. The current findings indicate that images in advertisements in men's fitness magazines do not establish rhetorical legitimacy, as understood from a rhetorical perspective. However, when examined through a traditional aesthetic intentionalist perspective, the construction of the advertisements operates as ideographic images, establishing legitimacy through the image. This information provides us with the understanding that advertisements within current muscle magazines are operating under a traditional viewpoint, and as such, produce traditional perspectives. The advertisement industry within this genre is reliant upon the consumer first knowing what the product is and then realizing how the image fits into that function. The limitation within this perspective of the advertisement industry is the consumer's knowledge base concerning the product, the product being explained through text and the time the consumer is willing to spend on correlating the intent or function with the images presented.

Coverage of the Fukushima crisis in the two major English-language newspapers in Japan : a critical analysis

Finn-Maeda, Carey 11 1900 (has links)
This study uses a mixed-method approach to analyse the coverage of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan’s two major English-language newspapers – The Japan Times and The Daily Yomiuri. Quantitative coding is combined with critical discourse analysis to determine whether the coverage was, overall, predominantly alarming, reassuring, or relatively balanced and neutral. This is done to ascertain whether the newspapers were sensationalising the crisis, echoing the official government and industry communication thereof, or reporting in a critical, responsible manner as the fourth estate. To answer the research question, key aspects of the coverage like foci, framing, sources, narratives, actors and agency, and criticisms are closely examined. It is revealed that the coverage was neither predominantly alarming nor reassuring, but was problematic in other ways. The implications of the complex findings, both for the Japanese media industry and international disaster reporting, are discussed. The study is situated in a broad literature framework that draws on agenda setting theory, research about the roles and responsibilities of the media, the field of risk communication and the reporting of radiation events in history. / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication)

Things that matter to residents in nursing homes and the nursing care implications

Reimer, Nila B. January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / A move toward care of residents in nursing homes where they are respected and heard is finally emerging. Common strategies used in nursing homes to improve quality of care for residents are integration of person-centered care and assessing care using satisfaction surveys. Although approaches of integrating person-centered care and satisfaction surveys have been valuable in improving nursing home quality, strategies of care that include things that matter from residents’ perspectives while living in nursing homes need investigation. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe things that residents age 65 and older state matter to them while living in the long-term care sections of nursing homes. A qualitative mode of inquiry using purposeful sampling led to a natural unfolding of data that revealed things that mattered to residents. Content analysis was used to reduce the data in a manner that kept the data close to the context yet moved the data toward new ideas about including things that mattered to residents in nursing care. The findings revealed residents’ positive and negative experiences and addressed the question: How can nurses manage residents’ positive and negative aspects of care in nursing homes? This study substantiated the importance of developing nursing care strategies derived from residents’ descriptions of care. Finding ways to promote nurses’ investment in attitudes about a person-centered care philosophy is essential for successful person-centered care implementation. Enhancing nurses’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes with an investment in person centeredness will be more likely to put nurses in a position to role-model care that is person-centered from residents’ perspectives.

A critical investigation of deaf comprehension of signed tv news interpretation

Wehrmeyer, Jennifer Ella January 2013 (has links)
This study investigates factors hampering comprehension of sign language interpretations rendered on South African TV news bulletins in terms of Deaf viewers’ expectancy norms and corpus analysis of authentic interpretations. The research fills a gap in the emerging discipline of Sign Language Interpreting Studies, specifically with reference to corpus studies. The study presents a new model for translation/interpretation evaluation based on the introduction of Grounded Theory (GT) into a reception-oriented model. The research question is addressed holistically in terms of target audience competencies and expectations, aspects of the physical setting, interpreters’ use of language and interpreting choices. The South African Deaf community are incorporated as experts into the assessment process, thereby empirically grounding the research within the socio-dynamic context of the target audience. Triangulation in data collection and analysis was provided by applying multiple mixed data collection methods, namely questionnaires, interviews, eye-tracking and corpus tools. The primary variables identified by the study are the small picture size and use of dialect. Secondary variables identified include inconsistent or inadequate use of non-manual features, incoherent or non-simultaneous mouthing, careless or incorrect sign execution, too fast signing, loss of visibility against skin or clothing, omission of vital elements of sentence structure, adherence to source language structures, meaningless additions, incorrect referencing, oversimplification and violations of Deaf norms of restructuring, information transfer, gatekeeping and third person interpreting. The identification of these factors allows the construction of a series of testable hypotheses, thereby providing a broad platform for further research. Apart from pioneering corpus-driven sign language interpreting research, the study makes significant contributions to present knowledge of evaluative models, interpreting strategies and norms and systems of transcription and annotation. / Linguistics / Thesis (D. The impact of the negative perception of Islam in the Western media and culture from 9/11 to the Arab Spring

Bousmaha, Farah January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / While the Arab spring succeeded in ousting the long-term dictator led governments from power in many Arab countries, leading the way to a new democratic process to develop in the Arab world, it did not end the old suspicions between Arab Muslims and the West. This research investigates the beginning of the relations between the Arab Muslims and the West as they have developed over time, and then focuses its analysis on perceptions from both sides beginning with 9/11 through the events known as the Arab spring. The framework for analysis is a communication perspective, as embodied in the Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM). According to CMM, communication can be understood as forms of interactions that both constitute and frame reality. The study posits the analysis that the current Arab Muslim-West divide, is often a conversation that is consistent with what CMM labels as the ethnocentric pattern. This analysis will suggest a new pathway, one that follows the CMM cosmopolitan form, as a more fruitful pattern for the future of Arab Muslim-West relations. This research emphasizes the factors fueling this ethnocentric pattern, in addition to ways of bringing the Islamic world and the West to understand each other with a more cosmopolitan approach, which, among other things, accepts mutual differences while fostering agreements. To reach this core, the study will apply a direct communicative engagement between the Islamic world and the West to foster trusted relations, between the two.
