Recreating and Deconstructing the Shifting Politics of (Bluegrass) Festivals

Laney, Jordan 27 August 2018 (has links)
Utilizing archival research from Berea College's Appalachian Sound Archives and Appalachian State University's Belk Special Collection, more than 45 survey results, 15 extensive interviews, and participant observations from 15 festival field sites, I examine bluegrass festivals as sites of identity production through feminist methodologies and a participatory ethnographic approach. This requires careful analysis of the nature of the genre's audience and audience members' investments in the process of framing the performance of bluegrass music's history through a shared historical narrative. More broadly, this analysis clarifies the nuanced role of bluegrass festivals in constructing generalizations about place-based identities, race, and gender within the performative space of festivals. In this assessment, the political and economic actions generated as a result of bluegrass performances are explored as temporal and spatial organizers for the (re)production and consumption of generalized ideals which are projected onto both literal and figurative southern stages. I perform this research utilizing the conceptual frameworks of theories of space and place, politics of culture, and feminist methods, combined through critical regionalism. My hypothesis is that bluegrass festivals serve as spaces to perform white patriarchal capitalist desires while relying on marginalized and hidden cultural productions and exchanges. My findings reveal that in order to gain a fuller understanding of politics culture, the stage must be subverted and the researcher's gaze must go beyond that which is typically traditionally framed to encompass the festival in its entirety. This requires seeking out not merely that which is intentionally framed but also narratives that create the stage or are omitted by dominant ways of interpreting the festival space. Ultimately, I find the significance of temporary physical sites for identity construction and the potential for dynamic social change within these spaces relies on the ability of scholars and participants alike to re-historicize and retell dominant narratives. / Ph. D. / The fantasized rural Appalachian region and greater south—a social construct, constantly created and recreated by social desires, political needs, and economic trends—has been a space of cultural production and experimentation, notably since the reconstruction era. One result has been the stereotypically regional genre of bluegrass music. This project asks how bluegrass music festivals began, for whom, and to what end. More importantly, it turns an eye towards research methods and power structures within the community. Research was conducted at Berea College’s Appalachian Sound Archives, at Appalachian State University’s Belk Special Collection, and through online surveys, participant observations, and interviews. In this dissertation, I carefully examine the role(s) of bluegrass festivals, specifically those envisioned and enacted by Carlton Haney (notably, in Fincastle, Virginia, in 1965). My findings illuminate how bluegrass festivals serve as sites where widely accepted generalizations about place (specifically, Appalachia and the rural American south) and specifically the bluegrass community are formed. Further, I address the role of gender within these spaces and the symbiotic relationship between female labor and bluegrass. The history of bluegrass festivals is approached with the intention of broadening discussions of gender, labor, and historical narratives beyond the festival grounds.

Cardenas Peredo, Tifany Alexa 17 July 2020 (has links)
The project starts with the aim of raising awareness among citizens for the recovery and rehabilitation of this place of the Historic Centre of Lima. The one who is a about to lose the category of world heritage site, granted by UNESCO since 1991. Insomuch as 83% of its inmovable heritage at risk of collapse. Currently, iconic buildings such as “The Ship”, Republican-style mansions and valuable buildings that shape the monumental urban environment have disappeared, that was caused by a collapse or fire, causing the selling the land to create werehouses that destroy the overall image of this historic area. The Old Deery Inn & Museum: An Ethnographic Case Study

Proffitt, Rebecca J 01 May 2017 (has links)
This thesis uses qualitative ethnographic research methods to present a case study that explores the multiplicity of meanings and representations that are attached to the Old Deery Inn & Museum in Blountville, Tennessee. Within the community, the Inn functions as a center for cultural memory, with the physical structure itself acting as an artifact that holds community identity. This community narrative contrasts with the official narrative used by tourism entities that markets the Inn as a part of the Appalachian region, situating the Inn within a complex and intricately constructed identity of place that is shaped by lived experiences as well as perceived cultural markers. By unraveling the narratives, this study unpacks the ways that the Inn’s various identities figure into the development of current interpretation and management efforts, and the way that this locally important historical site fits into the larger narrative of tourism marketing in East Tennessee.

[en] HEAVINESS AND LIGHTNESS: PRESENCE, BODY, AND MEMORY FOR A POETICS OF THE SHELTER / [pt] PESO E LEVEZA: PRESENÇA, CORPO E MEMÓRIA POR UMA POÉTICA DO ABRIGO

ADRIANO ANDRADE C DE MENDONCA 03 May 2018 (has links)
[en] From an intuitive realization that the exhaustive search for meaning in architecture has reached, in post-modernism, an instrumental fatigue, the work sets to investigate the concept of presence in architecture according to the debate established between Peter Eisenman and Kenneth Frampton in the field of architectural starting in the 1970 s. Frampton s studies about tectonics and critical regionalism, as a critical review of the supremacy of the scenographic in the society of the spectacle in detriment of the experience of the sensitive body, as well as Joseph Rykwert s research on the notion of the primitive shelter in the architectural historiography, offer a possible path to reaffirm presence as defined by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht: that is, the acknowledgement of architecture as a certain poetics of building, embedded with a specific constructive culture, within an anthropological view which takes body and space as ontological dimensions of man and his environment. Architecture is molded between sky and earth, where man builds his dwelling, suspended between an inherent and oscillating desire to take flight and to sink in the ground, produce of a search for an archetypal house transmitted by tradition in the ritual relation of this man with his cosmology. The theoretical discussion establishes the conceptual basis for the critical analysis of works by Lucio Costa, Lina Bo Bardi, and Paulo Mendes da Rocha, in which one could identify, each in its own manner, a certain notion of shelter that transcends the historic time in search of a mythical space of building, dwelling, and thinking. Architectures in which tradition and modernity, memory and imagination, body and thought, heaviness and lightness are reunited in an eternal present.

Mercado Gastronómico en el Centro Histórico de Lima / Gastronomic Market in the Historic Center of Lima

Odría Merino, Alonso Ricardo 31 May 2019 (has links)
The thesis project consists in the research and development of a gastronomic market in the historic centre of the city of Lima, with an emphasis in the theories of Critical and Genuis Loci. The research phase seeks to establish a theorical frame, that serves as the bases for the project. In this research, a comparison in made between the conditions that lead to the development of the typology of the gastronomic market in Spain and those of the city of Lima. At the same time, the research studies the user and reference projects, allowing for the formulation of an architectonic program for the building. Said program, allows to establish potential sites for the building and the architectural emphasis. The emphasis, is based in the theories of Christian Norberg-Schulz, Kenneth Frampton and Aldo Rossi, forming the conceptual foundations for a design centred on the understanding of the built environment and its architectural identity of the historic centre of Lima. The development phase, consists in the development of the building proper, including the plans and all the relevant information pertinent to the design and construction of the project. / Tesis

Centro de interpretación de los canales y valles de Lima en la Urbanización San Juan Bautista de Villa en Chorrillos / Central Valley of Lima Water Channels Community and Interpretation Center in San Juan Bautista de Villa neighborhood in the District of Chorrillos

Pequeño Delgado, Jean Pierre Steffano 27 November 2019 (has links)
The following investigation has the objective of justifying the importance of an interpretation center about the water channel network that has irrigated the central part of Lima agriculture from its Pre-Hispanic era to the current one, as well as the establishing of design criteria adopted from the study of its typology and of the Critical Regionalism emphasis. The latter is linked to its history-related proposal and to an old urban vestige yet to be revalued from neglection, completely related to the idea of transportation of water for agrarian use: The aqueduct of the Hacienda Villa (18th Century), only one on its type in Lima city. The mentioned finality joins another one of revaluing its surroundings, also neglected, which are proposed to be transformed through the presence of the Project. In the investigation, it was discovered that an interpretation centre needs to offer exhibitions about the history or nature features of a site, in relationship with palpable elements on their surroundings, while it presents programatical variety that goes beyond the classical exhibition functional package, in aim of its sustaintability, as well as a direct communication between the main access of the project with public space. On the other hand, it has been studied that critical regionalism offer the building an oportunity of linking it materially and volumetrically with its local history-based idea along with the inclusion of natural resources. This project is important because it highlights the posibilities of revaluing a piece of urban heritage through architecture. / Trabajo de investigación

"Bring the Water Back" : En studie om hur en förstärkt platskänsla kan hedra ett kulturarv i en offentlig miljö.

Lucena Wallin, Yasmina January 2023 (has links)
This study is a degree project in Information Design with a focus on Spatial Design. The aim has been to gain an understanding of the residents' relationship to the city of Fuengirola through methods and theories. This with the goal of developing a public environment that leads to an increased sense of place while respecting and informing about a culture that is de-prioritized in favor of fast-growing tourism. The work inspects, from a perspective of Critical Regionalism and Sense of Place, the meaning of an authentic cultural experience and how it can be communicated through a spatial design. Methodical work has been carried out where interviews, photo studies, site analyses and an analysis of these have led to answers regarding which factors the residents of Fuengirola feel most attached to and which aspects have been lost over time. The results concluded that the attachment to place and the place identity that Fuengirola generates are based on interactions, traditions, and social gatherings, where the beach and tourism play a leading role. The sense of place is also strengthened through materials from a former room, as they still have a cultural importance today. The collected empirical evidence in combination with the theories has been the basis for a design proposal. The proposal involves a concept of different passages that reflects the activities and interactions that have characterized a room of the past and the factors that created an attachment to the place among the inhabitants. This degree project only visualizes part of a selected street to give an example of how these streets can potentially benefit an increased sense of place, place identity and connection to place in the city of Fuengirola.
