Resiliência a eventos traumáticos: conceito, operacionalização e estudo seccional / Resilience to traumatic events: concept, execution and cross-sectional study

Vilete, Liliane Maria Pereira January 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-04T12:42:02Z (GMT). / Introduction: The resilience can be conceptualized as a dynamic process that leads to positive adaptation in the face of adversity and involves the interaction between intrapsychic and social processes of risk and protection. Methods: Thesis of three independent articles, which have the resilience as common theme. The first one presents a systematic review on the operationalization of the resilience concept in epidemiological studies on Postttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following events of urban and/or intimate violence. The second article provides a systematic review on the psychometric properties of the Resilience Scale, and their different versions. The databases in the two revisions were: ISI, MEDLINE, LILACS and PILOTS. The third article investigates the factors associated with resilience to traumatic events from the data of a household survey conducted with a representative sample of the population aged 15 years or more living in the city of São Paulo. The association was investigated using hierarchical multivariate logistic models for both trauma intense as those for light / moderate. Results: Article 1) Epidemiological studies on PTSD followed intimate and/or urban violence are relatively recent and very heterogeneous in how operationalize the resilience concept. 2) The literature presents criticism on the ability of a single instrument to cover the complexity of the resilience phenomenon. However, the Resilience Scale has been widely applied, showing good psychometric properties in different versions, and suggesting to be a useful tool to assess individual factors of resilience. 3) The cross-sectional study conducted in São Paulo illustrated the proposal for a method of analysis that combines some forms of operationalization of resilience, demonstrating consistency of findings (with higher scores of the Resilience Scale predicting absence of disease after a traumatic event and the group classified as resilient - through the operationalization of "positive adjustment" - showing the higher scores of well-being). Conclusion: Despite the complexity of the phenomenon of resilience, the congruence of findings points to the possibility of an even better understanding of the construct, facilitating the comprehension of what can help to overcome traumatic events on individuals exposed to them.

Participation in leisure and physical activity among children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Cavallo, Sabrina 05 1900 (has links)
Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), one of the most common chronic childhood autoimmune diseases, is a heterogeneous inflammatory condition characterised by joint inflammation (i.e. active disease), chronic pain, fatigue and morning stiffness, which may interfere with age-appropriate daily activities (i.e. leisure and physical activity, mobility and self-care), both at home and at school. Involvement in leisure and physical activity is beneficial to the health and development of all children and adolescents, and has also shown to help mitigate the effects of disease among those with chronic conditions such as JIA. Despite the benefits of leisure participation this subject remains vastly understudied in JIA. Objective: The aim of this thesis was to assess participation in leisure and physical activity among children and adolescents with JIA, as well as identify associated disease-related, personal and environmental factors. Methods: The assessment of patterns and exploration of potential predictors of participation in leisure and physical activity in children and adolescents with JIA was completed through a systematic review of the literature, analysis of survey data from a nationally representative sample of Canadian children with arthritis (age range = 5 to 14 years, nweighted = 4350), as well as the standardized assessment of leisure with the Children’s Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (n=107) and the objective measurement of physical activity with accelerometer (n=76) among a clinical sample of children (age range = 8 to 11 years) and adolescents (age range = 12 to 17 years) with JIA followed at the Rheumatology clinic at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, McGill University Health Center. Clinical data were also compared to normative data and children and adolescents without JIA. We explored factors associated with participation in leisure and physical activity using multiple linear regression models and hierarchical analysis. Results: Children and adolescents with JIA participated in an array of leisure activities; however involvement was least frequent in active physical and skill-based leisure activities compared to other types of activity. Those with JIA were generally less physically active than healthy peers without JIA, and most with JIA did not meet national recommendations for physical activity. Boys with JIA were more likely to engage in physical activities, and less likely to take part in social, skill-based and self-improvement activities than girls with JIA. In general, being a boy, older age, greater mastery motivation for gross motor skills, higher socio-economic status and being of Canadian cultural background were associated with increased participation in more physical activities. Preference for skill-based activities, higher maternal education and being a girl were associated with increased participation in skill-based activities. Conclusion: Participation in leisure and physical activity in JIA is a complex concept and is mostly explained by personal and environmental factors. The identification of factors associated with leisure participation and physical activity is of utmost importance in JIA as it may aid health care professionals to tailor meaningful intervention plans based on preferred activities, improve adherence to treatment and help promote healthier lifestyles.

Ungdomars sexuella risktagande och rapporterad våldsutsatthet via SEXIT- : En stickprovsundersökning / Adolescense sexual risk-taking and reported exposure to violence through SEXIT- : A Cross-sectional study

Svanström Sparby, Linnea, Hanning Sundberg, Laila January 2024 (has links)
Background: Adolescence is a crucial period for youth. Youth exposure to violence is a public health issue globally and nationally. Midwives at youth clinics adress topics such as relationships, lifestyle and sexual behaviour. Västra Götaland Region has developed SEXIT, method to identify youth’s sexual risks and experiences of violence.  Motive: Adolescents' sexual and reproductive health needs to be improved and their rights strengthened. By mapping young people's sexual behavior and experiences of violence, we can see what risks they expose themselves to or expose others to.  Aim: to map adolescens´ sexual behavior and their exposure to violence through SEXIT and to explore potential differenses between age and gender.  Method: Survey with 284 youths at a youth clinic in Norrland during 2022, responding to the SEXIT questionnaire containing background questions, exposure to violence, and sexual risk behaviors. 96 were excluded, and 188 analyses were conducted using the statsistical software Jamovi 2.4.8.0, categorized by youths and young adults, including comparisions between exposure to violence, sexual risk-taking, age and gender.   Results: A high proportion of adolescents and young adults reported exposure to physical, psychological and sexual violence. More women state that they are pressured into sex (women 22%, men 3%). Over a third(34%) of women report exposure to psychological violence, corresponting to men who report 38%. Young adult men indicated that they have often been exposed to physical violence compared to young adult women (p=0.018)  More than half of women reported experiencing unwanted actions against their will. 15% used sex as a strategy to cope with emotional difficulties or as a form of self-harm.   Conclusion: A significant proportion of youths report exposure to psychological, physical and sexual violence, and they take substantial sexual risks. Accessible youth clinics are crucial for their health.

School culture and social inequalities in school-based health promoting interventions in Québec elementary schools

Kalubi-Lukusa, Jodi Cécile 03 1900 (has links)
Background: School-based health-promoting interventions (HPIs) are key components of public health strategies that aim to support youth development and promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles. A health-promoting school culture, which represents the school’s context for HPI implementation, has been identified as a facilitator of HPI adoption, implementation, and effectiveness. However, school culture may vary across schools and in particular, schools serving students from disadvantaged backgrounds which face known challenges for HPI implementation. Inequalities in school culture and HPI programming may exacerbate existing health inequalities across disadvantaged versus advantaged settings. Yet little is known about social inequalities in school culture or HPI availability across schools serving student populations of varying socio- economic status. Objectives: The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the associations among school deprivation, school culture and HPI availability. Specifically we aimed: (1) to quantify the association between school deprivation and each of perceived importance of health issues and HPI availability; (2) to quantify the association between school deprivation and health-promoting school culture. Because results from objective 1 showed a social gradient in the availability of mental health HPIs, we delved deeper: (3) to quantify the association between school context variables and the availability of mental health HPIs; and (4) to characterize them according to their alignment with best practices for effective school-based mental health promotion. Methods: Data were drawn from the PromeSS study, a cross-sectional survey of school principals including 171 elementary schools across Québec, Canada (2017-2019). Four measures of a health- promoting school culture were developed drawing from the Health Promoting Schools theoretical model. Logistic regression models, one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests were used to estimate associations between school deprivation, health-promoting school culture, importance of health issues, and HPI availability. In-depth data on a sample of 25 mental health HPIs implemented in study schools were analyzed in cross-case analysis. Results: The three articles that comprise this thesis show that: (1) disadvantaged schools reported more health issues as important than advantaged schools, but similar proportions of HPIs, except for mental health HPIs (a higher proportion of advantaged schools reported offering one in the past year); (2) advantaged schools had a more health-promoting school culture than disadvantaged schools, primarily in terms of engagement with families and the wider school community; (3) in the case of mental health promotion, advantaged schools, schools with a more health-promoting school culture, and schools where mental health issues were seen as important were more likely to implement mental health HPIs; and (4) although schools generally implemented interventions that were highly tailored to their context, few mental health HPIs were aligned with best practices for effective mental health promotion (e.g., whole-school approach, optimization of school culture). Conclusion: This thesis suggests that the context in which school-based HPIs are implemented matters, including student socioeconomic conditions. It strengthens empirical support for health- promoting school culture as a crucial feature for effective HPIs. School capacity for establishing a health-promoting school culture and implementing evidence-based interventions should be reinforced, especially for disadvantaged schools to improve student health and reduce inequalities.estimate associations between school deprivation, health-promoting school culture, importance of health issues, and HPI availability.

Grottke, Tina 30 July 2024 (has links)
External representations are important to understand and teach chemical phenomena and concepts. Students are faced with a multitude of representations, which they have to deal with appropriately to comprehend the content conveyed to them. An important prerequisite for the flexible use of several representations in teaching and learning processes is the so-called translation ability, which includes switching from one form of representation to another. However, empirical work reveals deficits among students. To shed light on these deficits, this work uses a quantitative cross-sectional study to investigate how the variables (a) translation path and (b) chemical class influence the translation difficulty, and (c) which correlations exist between students’ personal characteristics and their translation ability. The sample consists of 10th and 11th grade students from high schools in Berlin. To assess translation ability, a multiple-choice test was developed and validated in a think-aloud setting (N = 10) and a quantitative pre-study (N = 225). The data were analyzed using item response theory, as well as correlation and regression analyses. The results (N = 629) indicated that translation paths between molecular representations differ only slightly in terms of translation difficulty and have similarly high translation ability requirements (a). Regarding chemical classes, differences in translation difficulty and thus translation requirements for students could be identified (b). In a multiple regression, person-related variables such as declarative knowledge and mental load could be identified as predictors of translation ability (c). Thereby, these findings provide first principles for dealing with learning opportunities that have translation requirements and possibilities for follow-up research.

Ocampo Mascaró, Javier, Silva Salazar, Vera Jimena, da Costa Bullón, Abilio 03 February 2015 (has links)
