No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 7007895 bytes, checksum: 8912d052cbdcb22b7298108d33253001 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-01 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Information Science, has gradually assumed greater visibility and accountability in the context of socio-cultural dynamics. In this sense, the ethnic and racial issues are incorporated into the debate in the field, towards the elimination of racial practices, discrimination and black people silencing. In this perspective thoughts on the ethical and racial information sources are pointed out, that is the origin places of the information that reflect historical and cultural elements in the assertion of an ethnical group compared to contemporary multiculturalism. In the diversity of sources, the emphasis is given in pictures, believing that they are able to express aspects of life and social interactions regarding to Afrocentric culture. Thus, this present study aims at exploring the iconographic sources of ethno-racial information as a way of preserving Afrocentric culture in the photographical essay titled Engenhos and Senzalas. Operationally, the work intends to identify, contextualize and characterize the iconographical sources of information racial-ethnic, as well as to analyze the social cultural function of the archive where they are kept in and how these photographs (typological elements characteristics of the given sources) can serve as elements of representation and preservation of Afrocentric culture. In terms of methodology, it is a qualitative descriptive and exploratory research, based on critical-analytical methods such as document analysis and discourse analysis. Data collection has identified seventeen photographs produced in 1982, which aimed to represent the relationships between land lords and slaves in the post slavery period. The results show that photographs trigger the maintenance of the Afrocentric memory marginalized unable to adduce the black as a citizen even free. Thus, it is the archive information professional responsible to assign other mechanisms and information sources to crystallize the social role of the black people.

Carneiro, Maria Sylvia Cardoso January 2007 (has links)
This piece of research argues that mental deficiency is a condition that arises from social relations established with individuals who present unique characteristics in relation to the major part of population, and not as incapability. Based on a historical-cultural approach, this standpoint goes against traditional concepts of mental deficiency, especially that one informed by Vigotski. Notwithstanding any structural or functional organic alteration in the nervous system, a subject develops himself/herself through social relations – not as a mental handicap. As regards the methods, the story lives’ reports have been used of three adults with Down syndrome, who claimed to be mental deficiency-free. The three of them have been educated in regular schools, in Brazil and Spain, up to undergraduate level. These reports may portray that people develop themselves from interactions established in their groups and according to material resources available, despite their disfavorable organic conditions. Using narrative methods in research on mental deficiency enables one to acknowledge research subjects as actors and authors of their own story. In order to obtain data, target subjects have been interviewed, and mentors and relatives have also supplied additional information, always with respect to the specificities of each case. It was possible to identity challenge apropos the prognostics of mental deficiency and low education level in the three stories in the three different contexts and their very peculiar conditions. Social compensation processes seem to have enabled surpassing limits, which are taken as unsurpassable still in the present. Additionally, this research sought to comprehend constitutive elements of the subjects’ trajectory aforementioned. Directional axes’ analyses involved: breaking down negative prognostics, shaping up varied development possibilities, being educated at regular schools, the self-image each one presented, relations established in their workplace. Looking close at these and other breakthrough stories may help us reassure that one constitutes him/herself a human being relating to others, albeit disfavorable conditions.

The development role of traditional authorities in view of the decentralization in Malawi

Magomero, Christopher Julio 02 1900 (has links)
Chiefs in Malawi have traditionally been part of the government machinery since colonial days and continue to play a crucial role in development administration even more so in decentralized structures. They are able upon to mobilize communities in rural areas to initiate and implement community development projects with minimal supervision. Malawi Social Action Fund 1 (MASAF 1) project management approach, which centered on community ownership of projects and registered enormous successes, is a case in proof of this. However, distribution of power and roles between chiefs and local government authorities in view of decentralization demand more research and policy debate if chiefs are to be effectively utilized and for the decentralization process to work effectively. Whilst the local authorities derive their power from the control of 5% of revenue collected in the districts, which they are allocated, chiefs derive theirs from the legitimacy they have over their subjects for being in constant touch with the community. / Development Studies / M.A. Social Science (Development Studies)

The relevance of pastoral counselling in South Africa: with reference to the South African Association for Pastoral Work

Neethling, Ilze 11 1900 (has links)
In South Africa, no occupational or professional councils for pastoral work exist as yet. In order to support pastoral counsellors in their negotiations to obtain professional status in this country, the presumed limitations and ineffectiveness of present mental health systems in South Africa is examined. Pastoral counselling as a possible national health resource is explored with reference to primary health care, freedom of choice, consumer rights, cost-effectiveness, spirituality, social change and reconciliation and multi-cultural application. Arguments are imbedded in relevant theory and supported by vignettes of suffering, survival, and redemption in spirituality. A postmodern, qualitative approach is used. Participants' narratives indicate that they have experienced healing through utilising their religion and spirituality. However, this study does not claim to provide conclusive proof that pastoral work is relevant in this country - it should be seen as part of a process which aims to develop pastoral counselling as a profession. / Practical Theology / M. The co-creation and circulation of brands and cultures : historical Chinese culture, global fashion systems, and the development of Chinese global brands

Zhiyan, Wu January 2010 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of the possibilities and processes of constructing strong Chinese brands in the global marketplace. It investigates conceptual and strategic relationships between brands and cultures, focusing specifically on the issue of the unprivileged position of Chinese brands vis-à-vis that of other famous global counterparts. Accordingly, it deploys three illustrative cases from the Chinese context – Jay Chou (a successful Chinese music artist), the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, and Shanghai Tang (a global Chinese fashion brand). In so doing, it moves away from the general trend to study the managerial aspects of Western brand building in Chinese contexts, and instead examines how Chinese brands express cultural aspects of their own well-known brand development models in the global marketplace. In short, this study uses a Chinese vantage to examine the emergence of cultural branding (using historical culture and global fashion systems to develop global brands), and its capacity to function as a useful complement to existing models of brand globalisation and global brand culture. The function of the three cases is illustrative and analytic. Collectively, they serve as a lens through which to study Chinese brand development in the global marketplace and examine global brand culture. Each case was fleshed out through various multi-sited ethnographic studies, which consisted of interviewing and observing consumers and managerial workers, the results of which shed light on several important but under-studied aspects of global brand culture. These include Chinese cultural branding in the global context, the cultural approach to branding among various brand actors, and relationships between brands and cultures across branding cultures. Drawing on these examinations, this study not only demonstrates ways in which brands and cultures circulate and construct each other in global brand culture. It also uses these insights to argue for the development of Chinese culture or Chinese-ness into a global brand resource by Chinese brand builders.

Variação linguística e aspectos culturais na tradução de Táxi de Khalid el-Khamissi / Language variation and cultural aspects in the translation of Taxi by Khalid al-Khamissi

Rodrigues, Júlia Cardoso 02 October 2017 (has links)
This masters dissertation proposes a strategy to translate the book Taxi to Portuguese based specially on the cultural approach to translation. The strategy aims at the reproduction of the contrast of standard Arabic and Egyptian dialect verified in the original. The book Taxi by the Egyptian author Khalid al-Khamissi, is composed by short stories (addtas) that depict conversations between the author (as a character) and taxi drivers working on the streets of Cairo. Considering that different social and cultural aspects are explored in these dialogues, the author chose a linguistic procedure that is still source of polemic in the Arabic prose studies: all the dialogues, which constitute the most part of the work, were written in Egyptian dialect, while the typical standard Arabic was used for the narrative. This contrast, which is a reflex of the presence of diglossia in the Arabic speaking communities, creates an effect of oral text, as well as is relevant for the internal logic of the narrative. Thus, the translation proposed has considered the nature of the composition, the historical moment and the way diglossia works in Egypt with the aim of reproducing the relevant effects created by the linguistic alternation of the original without compromising the depiction of the Egyptian culture. In order to stablish the possible resources present in the Portuguese language, the linguistic works from NURC/SP (studies on Educated Urban Norm of São Paulo) were specially consulted.

For that, a study was made at Centro de Capacitação de Profissionais da Educação e Atendimento às Pessoas com Surdez – CAS, having two pairs of deaf people selected and assisted at the workshop of games and exercises to stimulate logic reasoning. A survey was carried out ethnographicly focusing on the intention of figuring out strategies used in the school context. For doing so, video-tapings of the activities of the pairs were done and afterwards came the phase of the translation / transcription of the material destined to the microgenectic analysis. Discursive activities of these people in interaction situations were taken as a unit of analysis. The theories that led this paper were the historic-cultural approach of Lev Vygotski (concepts: mental functions, mediation, zone of proximal development) and the language theory of Mikhail Bakhtin (concepts: dialoge, polyphone, enuntiation). Some strategies were identified and analyzed. For exhibition purpose, these strategies were divided into two groups: the first one would contain those which were connected to high mental functions in its instrumental dimension (understanding as psychological instruments), the second group was connected to high mental functions in its dimension of process (understanding as psychological processes). In the first group, different strategies of addition and division were identified and analyzed, while in the second group were found strategies connected to visual perception and the organizing action of thoughts. The study on such strategies allowed us to have a reflection concerning the idea that Psychology could establish as a goal the study of the efficiency of the deaf, this matter is beyond deficiency, and also try to push away metanarratives about the mental constitution of the deaf, such as cognitive incompetence.
