Examining Cultural Humility and Intersectionality in Mental Health TreatmentHerrera-Spinelli, Sandra Y. 01 January 2019 (has links)
Cultural awareness is an ethical standard in the social work profession and, as the diversity in the United States continues to grow, it is a social work practice problem when cultural awareness is not implemented in mental health settings. The National Association of Social Workers revised the cultural awareness standards to include cultural humility and intersectionality as practice indicators. The purpose of this action research study was to examine how clinical social workers demonstrated cultural humility and intersectionality in mental health settings. Person-centered theory guided this study and a total of 17 clinical social workers in New Mexico participated in in-depth interviews to give examples of clinical practice behaviors that demonstrated cultural humility and intersectionality. Thematic analysis was used to identify common themes, which included (a) genuine interest in the client's culture, (b) therapist congruence, (c) unconditional positive regard, and (d) empathic understanding. The implications of this study for social work practice and social change are that findings could contribute to improved cultural awareness in mental health settings and decrease mental health disparities among minorities. Recommendations include creating continuing education, mentoring minority college students on their career path in mental health, and developing a mental health business model that integrates cultural awareness.

魯迅小說在華語文文化教學上之應用研究-以〈祝福〉為主要討論範圍 / Teaching Chinese Culture Through Literature: "New Year's Sacrifice" ("Zhu Fu") and Other Short Stories by Lu Xun楊雅雯, Yang, Ya Wun Unknown Date (has links)
With the trend of globalization, communicative competence in foreign language education requires not only the goal of communicative efficiency but the development of culture awareness. In other words, it is not sufficient for learners to know how to communicate meanings but to understand the practice of meaning making itself. Literary texts are products that reflect different aspects of society. For it is through literature, serving as cultural documents, that learners can sense the complexity and ambiguity in norms of interaction in cross-cultural situations, and thus to be sympathetic to a different country and culture.
Lu Xun’s novels, analyzing specific “Chinese national characteristics”, had a great impact on how modern China looks in the past. Through the historical background, emotional resonances and moral imaginings embodied in Lu Xun’s novels, learners are able to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. However, literature has not been given much emphasis in the TCSL classroom. As a result, the purpose of the thesis is to explore Lu Xun’s perspective on Chinese culture and to apply its results to the practical use of teaching Chinese. A qualitative research method was employed to analyze Lu Xun’s novels and to exploit the novel called “New Year’s Sacrifice” in the classroom.
In detail, the present thesis focuses on two discussions: (1) Analyzing Lu Xun’s novels: The underlying value orientations presented in “Kong Yiji”, ”The True Story of Ah Q “ and “New Year’s Sacrifice “will be discussed. (2) Analyzing critical appraisals of Lu Xun’s work in order to figure out how Lu Xun became one of the most prominent authors of modern China: Critics’ views in 1919 to the years after 1976 will be examined.
Results of the study indicate that the multiple layers of cultural meaning in Lu Xun’s novels can raise learners’ culture awareness as well as motivate learners to discover the underlying concept of culture. Lastly, the suggestions developed from the discussions are provided as follows: (1) Negotiation of meaning often flounders because of a lack of understanding and trust of how to participate in different discourse environments. Thus, Taiwanese literature can be included in culture teaching for students who are learning Chinese in Taiwan. Through the cultural context provided in Taiwanese literature, students are able to acquire a much more sophisticated competence in the manipulation of symbolic systems and also to enhance positive attitudes toward Taiwanese culture group. (2) The interaction between language and culture should be considered as a substantial part of culturally oriented language courses.

[en] O JEITO ERA DAR UM JEITO: THE ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF BRAZILIAN JEITINHO IN NATIONAL CHRONICLES: AN INTERCULTURAL PERSPECTIVE WITH A CONTRIBUTION TO THE TEACHING OF PORTUGUESE FL/2L / [pt] O JEITO ERA DAR UM JEITO: A ANÁLISE DO CONCEITO DE JEITINHO BRASILEIRO EM CRÔNICAS NACIONAIS: UMA PERSPECTIVA INTERCULTURAL COM APLICABILIDADE PARA O ENSINO DE PORTUGUÊS LE/L2THAIS DE FREITAS MONDINI BELLETTI 31 July 2017 (has links)
[en] The concept of jeitinho is present in a series of discourses that express a set of values that Brazilians perceive as their own. In fact, jeitinho cannot be correlated exclusively to a social class or select group. It is constructed as a social practice known and legitimized by all segments of Brazilian society. Thus, based on a social perspective of the language, the approach of this concept in a context of teaching Brazilian Portuguese as a foreign language or second language is relevant. In this dissertation, we propose to approach the concept of jeitinho through the reading and analysis of chronicles of three Brazilian authors. This genre presents a unique language which is a product of journalistic discourse and, at the same time, is included among recognized literary genres. The analysis of chronicles was carried out from the perspective of discursive semiotics, aiming to search for meanings that are related to the concept of jeitinho. Based on an intercultural perspective, foreign learners can touch on certain cultural aspects that involve the concept of jeitinho in Brazilian society, through the reading of chronicles. We believe that the result of this research may contribute to the promotion of a critical cultural awareness within the scope of the teaching of
Brazilian Portuguese.

Using Literature as a Teaching Medium in English Classes in Sweden / Att använda litteratur som undervisnings medium i engelska klasser i SverigeAziz, Lamar January 2021 (has links)
There is a great tendency in using literature as a medium of language teaching because literature plays an essential role in developing the students’ language skills. It also helps them in acquiring cultural experiences and to attain a better understanding of the literary texts. The Swedish National Agency for Education supports the inclusion of literature in English language classes in each of primary, secondary and even upper secondary schools. This research aims to examine the underlying reasons behind incorporating literature in teaching English, specifically in Swedish secondary schools grades 7-9, and it sheds light on how teachers manage to employ literature effectively in the classroom. Moreover, it explains the criteria behind selecting appropriate literary texts that suit students’ needs. The study also states some problems that may encounter teachers in adopting literature as a way of teaching. All these issues are discussed through conducting qualitative interviews with three English teachers. This study points out that literature has been used as a paramount tool for teaching English. By reading literary books, students’ knowledge about social and cultural issues is developed and their language skills also become better. Furthermore, teachers mention that there are several central criteria to note when using literature during the process of teaching literature, such as selecting literary materials with topics that students can find interesting to work with. Different kinds of tasks have been assigned to students to get the opportunity to describe, analyse and reflect upon what they worked with. Some of the challenges identified by the teachers are lack of time and the students’ different skill levels. More studies are required regarding the efficacy of using literature as a helping educational tool in English language learning from students’ views, in particular considering individual and linguistic improvement.

Guidelines for professional socialisation of student nursesDe Swardt, Hester Cathrina 11 1900 (has links)
An increase in reports of undesirable professional behaviour in the nursing profession
has prompted the question: How could the internalisation of skills, knowledge, values
and beliefs be guided in student nurses to help them become effectively socialised as
professional nurses? Using a sequential exploratory mixed-methods approach, the
study addressed the above question. The researcher used focus-group interviews and
field notes to explore and describe the perceptions of professional nurses and
experiences of student nurses regarding the professional socialisation of students. The
data generated from these findings were further used to determine and describe
educators’ (N=128) perceptions on their teaching and facilitation of professional
socialisation of students, using a self-administered questionnaire. The findings of both
the qualitative and quantitative data were integrated to develop and validate guidelines
to support educators and professional nurses in the professional socialisation of
students. To establish rigour, the researcher applied measures of trustworthiness and
performed validity and reliability tests.
The qualitative data were analysed by utilising Tesch’s method of data analysis. The
themes that emerged as influential in the professional socialisation of students were
related to the professional nurse as role model, clinical supervisor, the educator, clinical
learning environment, values and beliefs of the nursing profession and cultural and
gender orientations. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and
inferential statistics. Educators’ teaching and facilitation strategies revealed that the
educator as a role model, the clinical environment, teaching approaches and cultural
awareness were important social determinants in the professional socialisation of
students. The qualitative and quantitative data were integrated to develop guidelines
that were validated by field and guideline experts. The guidelines for educators and professional nurses addressed issues such as the professional nurse as role model and
clinical supervisor, the creation of a positive clinical learning environment, the educator
as role model, the teaching and support of students, the work ethic of the professional
nurse and educator, the students’ behaviour and cultural awareness. These guidelines
propose recommendations for educators and professional nurses to support the
professional socialisation of students. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Health Studies)
