Statistical modelling of the shrinkage behaviour of South African concretesGaylard, Petra Cornelia 03 February 2012 (has links)
MSc., Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, 2011 / A hierarchical non-linear model was developed for the time-dependent shrinkage
behaviour of South African concretes, from historical laboratory data.
The fit of fifteen growth curve models to the shrinkage-time profiles was evaluated
and MCDA was used to identify the best model. The three parameters of the chosen
growth curve model were modelled in terms of covariates (relating to concrete raw
materials, concrete composition and shrinkage testing conditions) by multivariate
multiple regression to produce the WITS model. The model largely conformed to
existing knowledge about the factors affecting concrete shrinkage.
Published models for concrete shrinkage were compared to the WITS model
regarding their predictive ability with respect to the South African data set. The WITS
model performed the best across a variety of graphical and numerical goodness-of-fit
measures.
The importance of the study is two-fold:
The concept of hierarchical non-linear modelling has been applied for the first
time to the modelling of the time-dependent properties of concrete.
This is the first comprehensive model to bring together laboratory data on the
shrinkage of concrete generated in South Africa over a span of thirty years.

Influência de características de equipamentos fotoativadores e tempos de fotoativação na polimerização de resinas compostas bulk fill / Influence of characteristics of light curing units and photoactivation times on the polymerization of bulk fill composite resinsShimokawa, Carlos Alberto Kenji 12 June 2017 (has links)
Light curing units can present different characteristics and they can influence the polymerization of composite resin restorations. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of four light curing units and verify their influence on the polymerization of two bulk fill composite resins. The light curing units Bluephase 20i (Ivoclar Vivadent), Celalux 3 (Voco), Elipar DeepCure-S (3M ESPE) and Valo Grand (Ultradent) were analyzed regarding their tip diameter, radiant power, irradiance, emission spectrum and light beam profile, and used for the photoactivation of the composite resins Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative - A2 (3M ESPE) and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill - IVA (Ivoclar Vivadent). White Delrin® matrices were used for the confection of 12 mm diameter and 4 mm depth specimens, being their hardness measured at the top and bottom surfaces, with 97 indents per surface, at the center and all the directions. One matrix, made using human tooth, was used for the confection of 12mm wide and 4 mm depth restorations, in which the transversal hardness was measured. Indents were made at the center and the mesial and distal regions (4,5 mm from the center) of the restorations, at every 0,5 mm in depth. After the microhardness tests, the specimens were immersed in Tetrahydrofuran for 24 hours. The light transmission through the specimens was also analyzed. The obtained data was statistically analyzed with the ANOVA and Tukey tests, with a 5% significance level, and t test. The hardness values measured at the specimen made with the Delrin® matrices showed that the factors composite resin and surface influenced the results (p<0,05). The interaction between the light curing unit and the region of the indents also influenced the results, when the Valo Grand was used, there was no statistically significant difference between center and the external regions (p>=0,05). When the Celalux 3 was used, there was a statistically significant difference between the central and external regions (p<0,05). The hardness results obtained with the specimen made using the matrix of human tooth showed statistically significant differences between the 10 and 20 second photoactivation times (p<0,05). The factor composite resin also influenced the results. There was a statistically significant difference between the center and the mesial and distal regions when all the light curing units were used (p<0,05). There was also a statistically significant difference between the values measured on the mesial and distal boxes of the specimen (p<0,05). The light transmission results showed that little violet light reaches the bottom of the specimens and the position and the light curing unit\'s tip diameters influence the irradiance of light that reaches the bottom of the proximal boxes of MOD restorations. The light curing units showed different characteristics and they, associated to different photoativation protocols, influence the hardness of bulk fill composite resin restorations.

Estudo in vitro do efeito de unidades fotoativadoras com diferentes comprimentos de onda na dureza (por meio de micro e ultramicroendentação) e módulo de elasticidade de uma resina composta nanohíbrida / Effect of light sources with different wavelengths in micro and ultramicrohardness and elastic modulus of a nanohybrid composite resin. An in vitro studyAraujo, Jesuina Lamartine Nogueira 04 June 2013 (has links)
This study evaluated in vitro the hardness (micro and ultramicro) and elastic modulus of a nanohybrid composite resin (Tetric N-Ceram/Ivoclar-Vivadent) with different colors, light sources and thickness. The specimens were divided into groups (n=5): KHN-Knoop microhardness, DUH-nanohardness and ME-elastic modulus; colors: A2 and Bleach-M (BM); light sources: LEDblue Elipar Free light 2/3M-ESPE (750mW/cm²/ 25s/430-480nm- (FL)), LEDblue/violet Bluephase/Ivoclar-Vivadent (1.200mw/cm²/15s/380-515nm) (B15) and 30s (B30); thickness: 1mm, 2mm and 3mm, compared to the irradiated surface (0mm). Specimens were stored dry for 24hours at 37ºC after photo curing. Assays were performed at KHN in HMV-2000/ Shimadzu with load of 25gf at 40s and DUH/ME in DUH 211S/Shimadzu with force of 10mN and no hold time (0s). 5 indentations of each test were made in the surfaces opposites to the photo curing. A statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA, Tukey and Pearson correlation (p<0.01%). Pearsons Test showed a direct correlation between KHN and DUH. Comparison between KHN and ME in the studied resins indicated that the light source FL promoted higher values of KHN and DUH to both resins tested, whereas the B15 light source promoted the higher ME value. Regarding thickness 0mm and 1mm showed higher KHN and DUH and lower ME than 2 and 3mm thickness. A2 color showed higher KHN and DUH and lower ME than BM. Thus, according to the proposed methods and the presented results, the LEDblue/violet was not better for curing the light color of the nanohybrid resin, than LEDblue.

Influência do índice de absorção de água de blocos cerâmicos e da temperatura de cura no desempenho mecânico das argamassas de revestimento em substrato cerâmico / The influence of water absortion in ceramic blocks and the temperature of cure in mortars performanceMoreira, Elaine Bahlis January 2006 (has links)
In constructions, mortars has many functions and it’s known that these perfect performance are directly related with the mortar kind, the properties in fresh and hardened stages, as also of the bond properties in which it will be applied. Overhead of one or more of these functions can accelerate the pathological manifestations appearance, things that make that mortars leaves off these functions bringing the user discomfort as well as maintenance costs and repair. The temperature and the air relative humidity, during the cure has influence in the mortar hardening. Therefore it´s true that all day long we have beyond temperatures with great variation. In this context, this dissertation searches to evaluate the mortars performance (industrialized, prepared with lime and prepared with additive) when applied in bricks with 3 water absorption levels, and cured temperatures of 5, 20 and 40°C. For such, the traction strength behavior was verified, beyond analyses in samples for each mortar kind. About the cure temperature, it can be said that the medium temperature (20°C) presented better resulted for the great majority of the combinations between mortars and ceramic bricks. About mortars, the one prepared with lime, the bond with lower water absorption, with medium cure temperature, presented better performance.

Implementation of PAT (Process Analytical Technology) approach has recently been promoted by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) within the pharmaceutical industry. A desired goal of the PAT framework is to enhance understanding and control of the manufacturing process through timely measurements, during processing, to ensure final product quality. Real-time monitoring of a coating operation was performed from in-line Near Infrared (NIR) measurements inside a pan coater. Mass of coating materials, determined by simple and fast weighing but depending on core tablet weight uniformity, and film coating thickness, obtained from accurate and non-destructive Terahertz Pulsed Imaging (TPI) measurements, were used as reference values to calibrate NIR spectral information. In both cases, these two critical quality attributes were predicted with low predictive errors, which were found to be similar. In addition, real-time predictions of drug release from cured tablets were carried out by in-line NIR measurements. The coating operation was successfully stopped when desired dissolution criteria were achieved. A post-coating thermal treatment, known as curing, is generally required to stabilize film coating from aqueous polymer dispersion. Innovative techniques were jointly used to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of film formation along the curing process. This study provided a new insight into the tablet coating structure, highlighting a reduced internal coating porosity, a decrease in water content and showing a better structural rearrangement of polymer chains, with dynamic curing. All investigated techniques confirmed that a stabilized state was reached after a 4 h dynamic curing in comparison with a reference curing carried out in an oven for 24 h. Interestingly even prior to curing, new findings were pointed out, during coated tablets storage, related to the crystallisation and the upward migration of cetyl alcohol, coupled to the downward migration of sodium lauryl sulfate within the coating layer.

ROOM TEMPERATURE CURING OF BIO-BASED RESINS AND PREPARATION OF THEIR COMPOSITESKukadia, Umesh January 2008 (has links)
In today’s world the significance of bio-based materials are increasing rapidly because ofthe environmental concern. Material scientists are nowadays engaged in development ofsuch materials which have natural origin and degrade in its environment. Several workshave already been reported in area of thermoplastic biocomposites. However biocompositesbased on thermosets is comparatively new area of research. In this work biobasedcomposites have been developed from two different bio-based thermoset resins. The main objective of the work was room temperature curing of poly lactic acid basedresin (POLLIT™) and AESO, acrylated epoxidized soy-bean oil (TRIBEST®). These tworesin systems were impregnated with different natural fibre mats. Cure behavior wascharacterized by means of DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimeter) and results showsthat the resins have been cured at room temperature. The mechanical properties ofprepared composites were assessed by the means of flexural testing and charpy impacttesting. The viability of using these composites in structural applications are also beendiscussed. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Previous issue date: 2018-07-16 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / In this study the influence of different commercial curing agents of epoxy resin on film capacitors encapsulation was evaluated. A formulation with DGEBA epoxy resin was used with three different curing agent types: anhydride base, aliphatic amine base and polyamidoamine base. The curing reaction kinetic analysis of each epoxy system was performed by Osawa dynamic method by DSC according ASTM E968. The thermal properties of the epoxy systems were checked by TGA and DSC while the mechanical properties were measured by Shore D hardness and IZOD impact strength, also the a characterization by SEM was performed. The epoxy systems performance in capacitor was verified by qualification tests for film capacitors for automotive application based in AEC-Q200 D, as: exposure to the maximum capacitor operating temperture, exposure to thermal cycles and exposure to humidity. The capacitors were characterized by the capacitance variation while the effects in the epoxy systems were checked by their thermal and mechanical properties change. The systems based on aliphatic amine and polyamidoamine had lower activation energy and higher reaction velocity than the anhydride system. The performance of the capacitor against humidity was similar between the evaluated systems showing low loss of capacitance after the test, whereas against thermal cycles, even the aliphatic amine and polyamidoamine base systems were not affected by reduction of mechanical properties, they had their performance affected by cracks arising. Regarding the performance under exposure to the maximum operating temperature, the anhydride system presented the lowest capacitance loss in the capacitor, followed by the samples with polyamidoamine and aliphatic amine, respectively, which showed a significant reduction of the mechanical properties after prolonged exposure to the temperature of the test.

Study of stability of the mechanical and chemical properties of rubber compunds vulcanized with sulfur after heat and oxidative aging.Rodrigues, Erick Batista 21 June 2010 (has links)
The increment of the service life of tires has been a constant challenge for their manufacturers. Increasing the life of a tire does not mean only prolong his life, but also maintain its characteristics and properties stable, whatever the compounds were designed for. To keep stable the properties and characteristics of the compounds, we must have the stability of the crosslinks formed during the vulcanization of the tire. In normal use, the main causes of the degradation of the crosslinks are due to the thermal and oxidative attacks. The objective of this study is to evaluate the thermal and oxidative stability of the crosslinks formed under different conditions and curing systems in a compound with natural rubber. Five formulations were prepared based on the natural rubber RSS-3 and variations in the dosage of sulfur and zinc oxide, as well as the type of the vulcanization system, conventional or efficient, were introduced. All compounds were cured in two conditions, 170°C and 140°C. The vulcanized compounds were evaluated by physical and chemical tests, including measurements of the storage and loss moduli, tension and stretching to break, tear resistance, crosslinking density and kinetics of curing. The performance of the compounds was evaluated under three conditions, namely new (original) and after aging in the presence and in the absence of oxygen. The results allowed us to conclude that the use of zinc oxide of high surface area and the efficient vulcanization systems are more resistant to thermal and oxidative aging.

Genetic and physical interaction of Sgt2 protein with prion-chaperone machineryPan, Tao 10 August 2011 (has links)
The word "Prion" refers to self-perpetuating protein aggregates that cause neurodegenerative diseases in mammals. It is a protein isoform that has undergone a conformational change which converts the normal form of the protein into the infectious form with the same amino acid sequence.
Yeast [PSI+] prion is the prion isoform of Sup35 protein, a translation termination factor eRF3. It has been suggested that prion [PSI+] is controlled by the ensemble of chaperones with Hsp104 playing the major role. The previous work performed in the Chernoffs lab showed that the defective GET pathway caused by get led to the defect in [PSI+] curing by excess Hsp104. The GET pathway is a system responsible for transporting newly synthesized TA-protein to the ER membrane, and the components which have been proven to be involved in this pathway include: Get1, Get2, Get3, Get4, Get5 and Sgt2. In this study we describe the mechanism underlying the effect of the defective GET pathway on [PSI+]. We demonstrate that Sgt2, one of the components of GET pathway, interacts with Sup35 in both [PSI+] and [psi-] strains through its prion domain. Overproduction of Sgt2 and Hsp70-Ssa is triggered by the defective GET pathway and leads to the protection of [PSI+] aggregates from curing by excess Hsp104. We show that the direct interaction between Sgt2 and Hsp70-Ssa is not required for this protective effect.
