Innovations in medical image processing for the design of custom medical devices and implants

Boelen, E. January 2010 (has links)
Published Article / In this article we will describe the use of 3D medical image information of individual patients as well as selected patient populations, combined with CAE tools and processes, in the rapid product development of custom and standard implantable devices. The combination of medical image information with CAE methods such as CAD, RP, FEA and CFD, allows the engineer to develop implantable devices faster and better, with optimized designs tailored to the anthropometry of the targeted patient (population), using virtual instead of mechanical prototype testing. Case studies will be demonstrated for a variety of surgical fields such as orthopaedic, cranio-maxillofacial and cardiovascular surgery.

Challenging the binary of custom and law : a consideration of legal change in the Kingdom of Tonga

McKenzie, Debra 01 June 2017 (has links)
The starting point for a consideration of law in former colonies is often a law/custom binary whereby law is the formal legal system imposed during the colonial occupation and retained at independence, and custom the local law disrupted by colonialism. In most South Pacific small island countries, this dichotomy of law and custom has been formalized by the protection of custom by constitutional or statutory provisions. The protection of custom was carried out as a celebration of local culture at Independence, but the effect has been to stymie the development of local custom and to reinforce custom’s post-colonial subsidiary position relative to the formalized legal system. The Kingdom of Tonga avoided the indirect rule of late colonialism and as a result Tonga’s legal system was never dichotomized into law and custom. There was no constitutional protection of custom because custom was never characterized as something other than law. Although it is undeniable that the direction of the development of law in Tonga was impacted by the presence of the Imperial project in the region, the legal change that occurred was led by Tongans. The starting point for legal change in Tonga was, and continues to be Tongan legal traditions even though local custom has not been formally protected. This project considers the two human concepts of apology and the protection of reputation. In Tonga’s hierarchical society both concepts already represented important legal traditions when the formal British-style legal system was adopted. However, these legal traditions were not relegated to something ‘other’ than law. The former continued as an informal legal tradition that addressed legal harms not recognized by adopted legal traditions, while the latter was incorporated into the adopted formal legal system with provisions that continued to reflect the distinctive Tongan society. Both legal traditions have faced challenges recently. Apology was no longer recognized as an efficacious remedy for women in the case of domestic abuse. The protection of the inviolable reputations of the monarch and nobility was limited by the exercise of the constitutional right of the freedom of the press. In both cases Tongans chose to exercise adopted constitutional rights in order to limit what was perceived to be an abuse of the exercise of power in the hierarchical society. Because local legal traditions had not been preserved as something apart from Tongan law, this development did not signal the end of Tongan legal traditions. Rather, it demonstrated the continuing development of Tongan law. / Graduate

Efficiency of combine usage: a study of combine data comparing operators and combines to maximize efficiency

Schemper, Janel K. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Agribusiness / Department of Agricultural Economics / Vincent Amanor-Boadu / Farming is an important industry in the United States. The custom harvesting industry plays a major role in feeding the world. Schemper Harvesting is a family-owned and operated custom harvesting service that employs 20-25 seasonal workers and understanding how to manage a custom harvesting business professionally and efficiently is the key for its success. Today, there is data available through JDLink on John Deere combine performance beginning in year 2012. The purpose of this study is to examine the usefulness of this JDLink data to assess the efficiency of each of Schemper Harvesting’s seven combines, including machine efficiency and different combine operators. The goal is to determine how the data can improve Schemper Harvesting’s overall performance. Statistical methods were used to analyze Schemper Harvesting’s performance. The analysis indicated that fuel is a major expense and there are ways Schemper Harvesting can conserve fuel. This information may prove valuable in being able to operate a combine more efficiently and save money on expenses. Overall, the objective is to improve Schemper Harvesting’s performance, which results in higher profit without sacrificing quality. Precision technology is an added expense to the business. Being able to justify this expense with profit is the answer. Fuel, labor and machinery are the biggest inputs in the custom harvesting business. These costs related to production agriculture have increased the demand for precision agriculture to increase efficiency and profitability. In order to compensate for the investment in technology, it has been demonstrated that it pays for itself. Making correct use of precision technology adds to productivity. With experience, operators improve increasing their overall efficiency. Incentive plans can be utilized through this data. With the availability of data, the costs and benefits of precision technology can be further evaluated. Five of the seven combines are operated by family members and the other two by non-family employees. This study shows that the performance of the non-family employees was below that of family members. The initial assessment for this difference may be attributed to experience because all the family members have been operating combines for most of their lives. This implies that employing people with excellent performance experience records and/or a need to train non-family employees to help them understand the performance expectations at Schemper Harvesting. The results indicate that tracking operational output performance indicators, such as acreage and volume harvest should be completed so that they may be assessed in concert with the technical indicators such as time and fuel use. The study provides the potential benefits of using John Deere’s JDLink data service providing telematics information for its customers with the latest precision agriculture technologies.

La construction d'un système juridique : la confrontation de la coutume et de la loi à Mayotte / The construction of a legal system, the confrontation of the custom and the law in Mayotte

Ahmed, Laoura 03 July 2015 (has links)
In Mayotte, the private law governs the civil legal situation of Mahorais basing their marital life on the customs of the mahr, the repudiation, the polygamy and the family housing at the married woman. Its reform emphasizes on the realism in the modernization of the law governing the legal reports of the latter. It tends to focus its sources on a written legislation which respects the letter of the clauses of the civil code. It directs the report of the custom and the law on their competition and not their complementarity. It involves the superiority and the establishment of the exclusivity of the legislated written sources. It promotes an application without distinguishing the civil statutes of membership of Mahorais. It aligns the civil statute established by the customs on the civil statute defined by articles 75 and 34 of the current Constitution. It returns on the preservation of the common laws, making difficult, even impossible their exercise. It entails situations of lawlessness and unapprised by the law. The marriage of common law is moved closer to the cohabitation and not to the civil wedding. The matrimonial intention of Mahorais is not recognized by the law.

La coutume chez les Kurdes de la région de Barzan / The custom among Kurds in Barzan’s region

Barzani, Habib 27 September 2018 (has links)
In the absence of national authority, the majority of the Kurdish people live according to a familiar pattern of a social organisation governed by customs. Therefore, by taking the traditions of the Barzani tribal communities as an example; we will show how custom is the foundation of Kurdish tribal society. The tribal confederation of Barzani is made up of seven tribes (the Sherwani, the Baroji, the Mazouri, the Dolamari, the Nazari, the Harki-Benagi and the Gardi) which is managed by the sheikhs of the village of Barzan, in the far north of Iraqi Kurdistan. The custom of the Barzanis includes all tribal and societal norms which derive from the customs of tribes in general; and in particular, the customary rules developed according to the evolution of the socio-economic conditions under the religious impact of Barzani sheikhs. The functioning mode of sheikh’s powers aims to guarantee the autonomy and survival of tribal society, based on custom and the principles of justice and fraternity. Hence, it allows us to argue that the tribal society of Barzani can be compared to a state.Barzani kinship based on patrilineal descent plays a significant role in social life. The lineage headed by a chief is the most important segment in a village and corresponds to a unit of the agnatic group composed of several families. In a lineage, White Beards are considered to have the vast knowledge of customary rules and wisdom; henceforth, they are highly respected. The family was patriarchal, and the father had absolute power over the members and property of his family. A woman had to obey her husband and respect prestige and fame, primarily by making hospitality a family value. Besides, the fidelity of a woman to her husband and the purity of girls being the family's honour.
