Numerical and experimental studies of magnetic field effects on solidification of metallurgical silicon for photovoltaic applications / Etude numérique et expérimentale des effets des champs magnétiques sur la solidification du silicium métallurgique pour des applications photovoltaïques

Cablea, Mircea 13 March 2015 (has links)
The photovoltaic modules are generally produced using silicon wafers. Theirelectrical efficiency is related to the crystal quality, which is influenced bythe presence of pollutants in the ingots from which the wafers are cut. Siliconingots are obtained as a result of solidification processes, which implygrowing a crystal from melt. During this solidification process, impurities areseparated from the silicon. The segregation process is greatly influenced bythe melt velocity during the solidification process. The control of the meltflow during the crystallization process can be achieved using external magneticfields. This thesis presents the results of the study on the influence ofthe forced convection induced by a travelling magnetic field (TMF) duringthe solidification process, using both an experimental set-up (VB2) and anumerical model.

Directionnalité graphique et dominance manuelle : une perspective développementale et interculturelle / Graphic directionality and handedness : a developmental and intercultural perspective

Kebbe, Hana 04 June 2012 (has links)
In the present work, we try to provide some understanding about the factors underlying the directional tendencies, by examining the impact of biomechanical constraints and cultural habits on directionality in graphic movements. French and Syrian subjects, children and adults, were compared in six experiments in order, to put in evidence the cognitive and psychomotor differences caused by the fact that the Eastern and Western cultures oppose on the directionality of writing and reading habits, and that the two hands are opposite in the directionality by adopting movements determined by biomechanical constraints. Likewise, this comparison allowed us to determine the relative strength of these two factors during development, when a conflict between the biomechanical constraints and cultural habits appears in the completion of a graphic task. The overall results show that the directionality can be considered as the product emerging from a complex interaction between these two types of influences. The writing habit is a determining factor when the task is performed with the right hand (dominant). But the cultural and educational factors can be modulated by the biomechanical factor when the subject uses the left hand (no dominant). This interaction varies by age of the subject.

Through numerical simulations, we model the collective movement of a school of fishes using behavioural rules similar to the ones proposed by Couzin et al. [23], that investigates the spatial dynamics of animals groups. The model presents three interaction zones: repulsion, orientation and attraction. Our results for the distributions of nearest neighbour distance, the diference of orientation between the velocities of neighbour fishes and the cooperativeness of the school are in good agreement with experimental measurements. A simpler way to describe the collective motion of several groups of organisms was introduced by Vicsek et al. [10]. This model presents only one interaction region, called orientation zone and considers point particles moving off lattice at constant speed adjusting their direction of motion to that of the average velocity of their neighbors, being subject to some noisy term. A second-order transition between an ordered state and a disordered regime was found. However, Gregoire and Chate [12] contest the nature of such phase transition as being of first order. Indeed, this transition is related to the way of introducing the noise into the system. In this sense, we present a comparative study on noise in two system of self-propelled particle (Vicsek model and Gregoire model) with the aim of understanding the role of the noise on some observables such as polarization, distributions of the nearest neighbour distances, difference of orientations between neighbour particles, the order parameter and the Binder cumulant.

Création et exploitation d'un corpus trilingue du tourisme (italien/français/anglais) en vue de la réalisation d'une base de données lexicale informatisée / Creation and exploitation of a trilingual tourism corpus (Italian, French, English) for the realisation of a lexical electronic stored database

Piccato, Mariangela 23 July 2012 (has links)
Our study concerns the language of tourism from a lexicographical perspective.Exploiting the web we realized a corpus ad hoc. This corpus is composed by about 10.000 texts in three languages (French, Italian and English), aligned using “Alinea”.Starting from terminological extraction, we analysed some collocations at the aim to create a trilingual and tri-directional glossary. We chose this subject according to the increasing importance taken from tourism economy in the world. Our study fields are thematic terminology, corpus linguistics and automatic language treatment. The first chapter presents the study field of our research. First of all, we introduced to corpus linguistics presenting the different categories of corpus and pointing out our attention on two main notions: representativeness and context. Therefore, we explained the link between Language for Special Purposes and tourism discourse as a Specialized Discourse. In the second chapter, we showed the trilingual thematic corpus we created during our researches. We described the main steps to create a corpus: collection of texts, cleaning and annotation. In this chapter, we gave a particular attention to the presentation of “Alinea”.Finally, the third chapter is a study of frequent collocations with the term “town” (ville). The annexes present the glossary as well as the methodological principals we followed in the redaction.

The coordination of the protection system is a challenge which modifies as the insertion of the distributed generation grows at any point in any system. In order to verify how the coordination is altered different indicators have been proposed in literature, seeking to express numerically the effect of this insertion on the pair of relays of a coordinated protection system. The Protection Coordination Index (PCI) and the Protection Miscoordination Index (PMI) are shown as valid indicators for this analysis. The purpose of this paper is to apply these quantifiers in the protection schemes of distribution lines of radial and grid systems that use Inverse Time Overcurrent Relays. By applying these indicators, it will be possible to judge if they will provide enough information to analyze the impact of GD insertion in the SDEE, otherwise, identify if there will be limitations which can be remedied by proposing new indicators. The new indicators proposed in this paper seek to cover the limitations observed, without necessarily using the same information. To achieve this goal, distributed generators will be connected at different points in the network, and its generation capacity will be changed in an increasing way; where for each insertion value and at each point of the system, the Coordination Time Intervals (CTI) between consecutive pairs of relays will be verified, and from these values, the quantitative indicators of the impact of the GD will be calculated. For this, a distribution grid system was modeled with a purpose of obtain the required quantities in the scaling of CT1s and relays, thus obtaining a selective coordinate operation, where for each primary relay there will be an extra relay, forming a protective pair. Next two protective systems were adjusted: one considering one-way relays and another, twoway relays. Finally, for the protection systems dimensioned and coordinated, the indexes found in the literature and the proposed indexes were calculated and compared to the same pair of relays, considering the same GD insertion value at different points of the system. Every indicator were valid to the quantification of the GD insertion impact in the protection schemes applied to SDEE, where IDP indicates a percentage of faults that will cause miscoordination, IDPP indicates the percentage of pairs of relays that will be miscoordinate for each fault, ICP shows wether the ITC variation will occur slowly or rapidly, where the faster variation will result in miscoordination rather than the slower one and ITC (%) imposes a restriction on ITC reduction indicating whether the insertion value will miscoordinate the pairs of relays analyzed through numerical values.

The data set came from an experiment setted in an agricultural commercial area in Cascavel city Paraná State, cropped with corn. The experimental area was subdivided into 40 georeferenced patch of land and the number of plants infected by Spodoptera frugiperda was observed within each patch of land. Thus, it is assumed that the data set have a binomial distribution. A study of first order local influence was proposed in order to verify possible influential points. The results suggest that the presence of influential observations in the data set have changed the statistical inference, the predicted values and the respective maps. In a second study, our interest was the spatial distribution of the fall armyworm in the experimental area. In order to do that, we used spatial point processes, where each plant infected by the insect within the experimental area was considered as an event of interest. An anisotropy study was carried out using different point process techniques, such as K directional function and wavelet test. The results show that the spatial distribution of the fall armyworm follow a Poisson cluster process with an evident anisotropy, mainly due to the shape of the experimental area.

New PDE models for imaging problems and applications

Calatroni, Luca January 2016 (has links)
Variational methods and Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) have been extensively employed for the mathematical formulation of a myriad of problems describing physical phenomena such as heat propagation, thermodynamic transformations and many more. In imaging, PDEs following variational principles are often considered. In their general form these models combine a regularisation and a data fitting term, balancing one against the other appropriately. Total variation (TV) regularisation is often used due to its edgepreserving and smoothing properties. In this thesis, we focus on the design of TV-based models for several different applications. We start considering PDE models encoding higher-order derivatives to overcome wellknown TV reconstruction drawbacks. Due to their high differential order and nonlinear nature, the computation of the numerical solution of these equations is often challenging. In this thesis, we propose directional splitting techniques and use Newton-type methods that despite these numerical hurdles render reliable and efficient computational schemes. Next, we discuss the problem of choosing the appropriate data fitting term in the case when multiple noise statistics in the data are present due, for instance, to different acquisition and transmission problems. We propose a novel variational model which encodes appropriately and consistently the different noise distributions in this case. Balancing the effect of the regularisation against the data fitting is also crucial. For this sake, we consider a learning approach which estimates the optimal ratio between the two by using training sets of examples via bilevel optimisation. Numerically, we use a combination of SemiSmooth (SSN) and quasi-Newton methods to solve the problem efficiently. Finally, we consider TV-based models in the framework of graphs for image segmentation problems. Here, spectral properties combined with matrix completion techniques are needed to overcome the computational limitations due to the large amount of image data. Further, a semi-supervised technique for the measurement of the segmented region by means of the Hough transform is proposed.

3D imaging and nonparametric function estimation methods for analysis of infant cranial shape and detection of twin zygosity

Vuollo, V. (Ville) 17 April 2018 (has links)
Abstract The use of 3D imaging of craniofacial soft tissue has increased in medical science, and imaging technology has been developed greatly in recent years. 3D models are quite accurate and with imaging devices based on stereophotogrammetry, capturing the data is a quick and easy operation for the subject. However, analyzing 3D models of the face or head can be challenging and there is a growing need for efficient quantitative methods. In this thesis, new mathematical methods and tools for measuring craniofacial structures are developed. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, facial 3D data of Lithuanian twins are used for the determination of zygosity. Statistical pattern recognition methodology is used for classification and the results are compared with DNA testing. In the second part of the thesis, the distribution of surface normal vector directions of a 3D infant head model is used to analyze skull deformation. The level of flatness and asymmetry are quantified by functionals of the kernel density estimate of the normal vector directions. Using 3D models from infants at the age of three months and clinical ratings made by experts, this novel method is compared with some previously suggested approaches. The method is also applied to clinical longitudinal research in which 3D images from three different time points are analyzed to find the course of positional cranial deformation and associated risk factors. The final part of the thesis introduces a novel statistical scale space method, SphereSiZer, for exploring the structures of a probability density function defined on the unit sphere. The tools developed in the second part are used for the implementation of SphereSiZer. In SphereSiZer, the scale-dependent features of the density are visualized by projecting the statistically significant gradients onto a planar contour plot of the density function. The method is tested by analyzing samples of surface unit normal vector data of an infant head as well as data from generated simulated spherical densities. The results and examples of the study show that the proposed novel methods perform well. The methods can be extended and developed in further studies. Cranial and facial 3D models will offer many opportunities for the development of new and sophisticated analytical methods in the future. Työ on jaettu kolmeen osaan.
