Reducing cases of gender based violence in Mashonaland Central province : Zimbabwe

Katembo, Alima January 2015 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Management Sciences(Peace-building), Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2015. / This study examines gender based violence in a mining community and uses the case study of Trojan Nickel Mine in Mashonaland Central Province of Zimbabwe. Studies have shown that Mashonaland Central has the highest incidence rate of gender based violence in Zimbabwe. Mining communities are more susceptible to incidences of gender based violence because of their cultural heterogeneity which engender and generate conflict. The research examines gender based violence within the confines of several theories and conceptual frameworks such as social-learning theory, sex-role theory and ecological framework. It reveals that no factor can be singled out as the cause of gender based violence, but argues that patriarchy whose norms are embedded through culture contributes the most in constructing attitudes and perceptions which legitimize gender based violence. The study also identifies religious practices and the environment as playing key roles in encouraging gender based violence. The study in the end constructs an intervention model based on the ‘catch them young theory’ where young boys were trained on non-violent strategies of reducing gender based violence. This is against the background that men play an influential role in communities as decision makers and policy makers. This intervention targeted changing the behavior and attitude of boys over women and girls.

Preventing violence against lone women in Pumula community, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

Ndlovu, Wakhumuzi January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Management Science: Public Management (Peace-building), Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / The purpose of the study was to assess or investigate the forms, causes and effects of violence towards lone women from Pumula Township, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. In finding these it seeks to prevent violence towards these lone women. It is noted that structural male dominant culture and inequality are the major causes of violence towards lone women in Pumula; this is also similar in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many studies on lone women have been done worldwide and to the best of my knowledge, none that seeks for substantive solutions has been done in Bulawayo. This study was exploratory and qualitative in nature. This was done through a forum, focus group interviews and personal interviews. The data in the forum was collected by an advisory team and the researcher was the facilitator in all interviews. The major method of data collection was the focus group interviews. Also for triangulation purposes, and to complement the focus group interviews, individual interviews were done. Stakeholders’ workshops and lone women workshops were conducted to propose the means that could be used to reduce violence against lone women. Ethical standards were observed during the study. The findings of the study indicate that violence towards lone women is caused by a patriarchal culture and the social norms that make lone women to be stigmatised, ostracised and discriminated against because of their status. The confiscation of their property after the death of their spouses, or divorce, the struggle to shelter and care for their children often causes lone women ill-health and low self-esteem. They also find it difficult to find time for self as they are the breadwinners. It was proposed that the community and the lone women work together to curb violence against lone women and to combat all the injustices that are happening within society. Women empowerment and development can eradicate violence against the lone women. / M

Parity Domination in Product Graphs

Whisenant, Christopher 16 June 2011 (has links)
An odd open dominating set of a graph is a subset of the graph’s vertices with the property that the open neighborhood of each vertex in the graph contains an odd number of vertices in the subset. An odd closed r-dominating set is a subset of the graph’s vertices with the property that the closed r-ball centered at each vertex in the graph contains an odd number of vertices in the subset. We first prove that the n-fold direct product of simple graphs has an odd open dominating set if and only if each factor has an odd open dominating set. Secondly, we prove that the n-fold strong product of simple graphs has an odd closed r-dominating set if and only if each factor has an odd closed r-dominating set.

Brabant, Josée 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis intends to present Annie Ernaux's constant concern to reach out to others throughout her work, resulting from her belief that individuals are the result of the speeches they go through and of the social world surrounding them. Influenced by Bourdieu’s sociology and by her own experience as a parvenu, Ernaux also shows a great sensitivity to power and dominance relationships, omnipresent in the society. Through her work, she seeks to turn illegitimate experiences into legitimate ones, in that way making her approach similar to Foucault’s. This includes the lifestyle and collective memory of the dominated, rarely depicted in literature or in the prevailing discourses. She also wishes to show that experiences lived as an individual are in fact largerly shared and have social and political origins. Even though each of her books intends to accomplish this passage from the individual to the collective, this thesis is particularly interested in Les Années, which combines narrative strategies employed in her previous books to a new form of narration in the third person, allowing her to deliver an even more “auto-socio-biographical” work.

Moiteiro, Rita de Cássia 05 October 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to demonstrate how gender relations were established in the musical creation processes throughout history, as well as the opposition of women composers against male domination, a term dealt by Pierre Bourdieu, bringing up issues like androcentric view, legitimizing practices of female submission, as symbolic domination, in which women incorporate power relations and recognize their submission to a dominant agent. Investigating roles played by women, some identifies that their quotidian practices are grounded in this androcentric sight, and that the patriarchal structure is present as in social as in political and economical spheres. All over the text, issues related to the theme of gender were also approached, through the analysis of literature in other fields of human knowledge. In light of women\'s casting off in musical creation, detecting compositions said to be part of feminine universe brings up a great contribution to the History of Music and Musical Analysis. As from the referential of New History, whose contribution consists in objecting the domination categories from which history was built, the question arises: How to analyze historical and musical context from the female compositional experience? About the question, it\'s appropriate to mention what Joan Scott emphasize, that, by including the female version of the history, one has a new understanding in spite of that the historians pointed as the whole truth. In this way, Pilar López and Lucy Green also defend that women have had a trajectory of hard struggle to compose musical genres other than those predetermined by the domineering society, that is, to create works said complexes, an activity that was considered proper to male universe. Despite the obstacles that women faced under the musical creation, and many composers have created more connected parts to music education or songs for a few instruments such as piano and singing, some of them managed to compose more complex works.

PUC Campinas / This paper seeks for understanding how the Igreja Mundial do Poder de Deus (IMPD) differs from other post-pentecostal churches because of the extreme charismatic appeal of its leader-founder, Apostle Valdemiro Santiago, for the control of members-voters. It has understood, therefore, that this relationship of power is characterized, among other types of pure Weberian domination, by a preponderance of the ideal type of charismatic domination. In this way, the association of politics with religion (neofundamentalism) is the real motive reason behind such domination. In another words, the substantiation of the Christian faith values offers legitimacy of the use of charismatic domination in order to create political projects that collaborate with the notion of creating a Christian society (building the Kingdom of God in Brazil). Regarding the methodology of the research, we used the categories and the concept of comprehensive sociology of Max Weber, with the overall goal of understanding the ideal types of domination and the specificity of charismatic domination linked to the case of IMPD, and also with the intention of to make clear the reasons of IMPD entrance in politics and its main political and social projects by the actions of church representatives, here called ?IMPD Christ politicians?.

Tavares, Rosana Carneiro 17 December 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-27T14:21:29Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Rosana Carneiro Tavares.pdf: 901998 bytes, checksum: beadfcca665ffc5f7eb47ea8a088281e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-12-17 / This work is linked to the Program for Post-graduate Stricto-Sensu of the Catholic University of Goiás, MA in Psychology, and has as an object of study the meanings of the process of Psychiatric Reform for the workers of the Psychosocial Center of Attention (PCA) in Goiania. The survey was developed in a PCA of Goiânia, with the workers of the unit. Three procedures were used to receive the information: desk research; recordings of three meetings of the team, and a focal group with the workers and coordinators. The analysis had as a benchmark the Socio-Historical Theory of Vigotski, which attaches as constitutive of the human condition the ability of social meaning, and understand the meanings as containing the historical experience of several generations, and also the work already undertaken and research on the process of Psychiatric Reform. With the bibliographic lifting became clear that the discussions and reflections refer to the need to transform a model of attention to mental health, as opposed to a traditional model that was established long time ago and that still is hegemonic in the area of health. It marked the need to expand the social space of the person with mental suffering and to understand this process by dialectic inclusion / exclusion. The analysis of the speeches of workers presented contradictory, tense and conflictive meanings. It defined the collisions that emerge from searches for transformation of the model of attention to mental health and made possible the seizure of the nuclei of significance that is marked by confrontations and contradictions in the knowing and making of the Psychiatric Reform. The analysis brought as a point of intersection among all the nuclei of significance seized, the relationships of power that cross the spheres involved in the process of reform. It raises points of weakness of this reform, when presented the confrontation of theoretical guidelines for the processing of the type of attention to mental health with the guidelines of the policy reform, as policy of state, and with the practices in substitutive services. Whereas all collisions are reflections of their own historical and social condition of the subject, the lack of exercise of social participation and heteronomy, there is a discussion on the need to rethink the reform, since the changes, are focused in practice , in the construction of a plan of action for the policy, and shows collisions and conflicts are typical of the exercise of power and domination that the social structures construct.

The theme of this research shows the meanders dialectic that are opposite and complementary between myth and Aufklärung, in which points to the dimension of domination of nature in the historical context of western reason since epic Penelope's tapestry until the Enlightenment. Meanwhile, another dimension permeates within this issue of domination of nature: the salvage of emancipation of subject contemporary and, within this dimension that is born the urgency of emancipating the subject, to rescue the broken subject in itself. The emancipation of the subject broken only happens with the recognition of the warp systematic domination existing in social life, searching for means of abstraction, protrude of intermittent sufferings of current reality, feeling the blow of autonomy gradually growing in awareness of the subject / O entrelaçamento dialético entre Mito e Aufklärung no primeiro capítulo da Dialética do Esclarecimento de Adorno e Horkheimer (Sérgio Augusto Moreira).

Teixeira, Glauciane Reis January 2010 (has links)
The present work intends to understand the unveiling of silence at the novel Coivara da Memória, by Francisco J. C. Dantas. Having the city of “Rio-das-Paridas” and the “Engenho do Murituba” as the stages where the actors of the “coivara” perform their dramas, the narrator/main character rebuilds a rigidly patriarchal society of the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century as he regains the lost time of his childhood. I observe the process of conquering the power of speech by the individuals who detain the economical power. Such process leads to the silencing of the others, meaning, the unprivileged and the women; individuals who lack both the power of speech and the financial possessions, having therefore their discursive production limited and their position as speaking subjects interdicted. Next, I analyze the existential trajectory and the silencing process of three important characters from the narrator‟s childhood – “Garangó”, “Avó” (Grandmother) and “Avô” (Grandfather) –, which materialize different faces of silence and of the use of the speech as a result of the relationships of social domination they were submitted to.

"Linha sobre linha. Investigação sobre a sociologia da dominação carismática e da cotidianização do carisma no mormonismo (1820-1847)" / Line upon line: Investigation on the sociology of charismatic domination and routinization of charisma in Mormonism. (1820-1847)

Neves, André Ruz 10 March 2006 (has links)
The research has aimed to accomplish a social-historical investigation of the process of routinization of charisma in Mormonism, seeking to perceive the change of the religious-prophetic charisma, and thus gathering elements which can enable to consolidate, considering a particular case, a more general theory of the occurrence of such social processes. The investigation sought to find, in the struggle for power and chances of prestige, the leading thread with which the process of change of a religious charismatic movement has developed, from highly emotional-pneumatic religiosity to a disenchanted, hierarchical and institutionalized religion. In order to achieve that, thorough documentation and historical interpretation has been applied, this way allowing a more detailed observation of the social phenomena investigated. The primarily theoretical instrument used in the research has been Max Weber theory of the charismatic domination, the theorization of the processes of charisma change and sociology of religion. The other essential theoretical reference can be found in the German sociologist Norbert Elias, including his concepts of psychogenesis and sociogenesis, figuration, monopolization process, balance of tension among others, which allow a privileged access to the long-term process which conformed and solidified the genuine charisma of the founder-prophet Joseph Smith in a ritualized religion and a hierarchic institution.
