Previous issue date: 2015-08-19 / This dissertation seeks to study the organization and the activity of repressive apparatus formed by Binational Itaipu Security Agencies and the UNICON Consortium from 1974 to 1987. For this research, cases have been selected which involved workers and were produced by these agencies offices, besides narratives of workers and security guards of these agencies. In this sense, the study starts with a discussion about the military origin of these agents, as well as the militarization of those bodies of security. This discussion in the first chapter allowed, throughout the study, to approach the military rigging at that time dictatorship to the action of these agencies. So, the incidence of torture against workers at the Construction Site and on the areas intended to be used as their home was endorsed by a broader power which exceeded the Construction Site itself. In this context, military or paramilitary training of these agents has provided meaning to the transformation of Binational Itaipu complex to a "Total Institution". The police world formed around these agencies or small military units had a purpose, i.e., beyond maintenance of order, to create a consensus among the mass of workers that they were all the time being monitored and their actions liable to punishment. If there were these characteristics of military and constant vigilance in society, it was also necessary to bring to the Construction Site, in terms of bureaucracy and practices, the same procedures adopted by regular police apparatus. This was the way that these security agencies kept the sign of torture and repression against common workers during the construction of the dam. The receipts of people which were commonly exchanged between the police agencies, by the delivery and the receiving from arrested individuals, were also adopted by these militarized sectors of Itaipu. In this way, it was coronated a complex scheme of repression connected to other entities which formed the basis of national information communities. If in the early chapters the study has intensified the analysis of police rigging around the Construction Site, in the following chapters it leaves the pure scope of militarization. In this other approach, the dynamics of hiring and the different ways that the job-seekers arrived at the contractors recruitment center are studied. Many workers already had a profession, and for these ones the hiring was facilitated. However, there were those who tried to get a job with no qualification at all, because they had come from other production branches which were in decadence, mainly from agriculture. In this sense, the diversification of the origin of the workers will be examined, demystifying the figure of the "barrageiro" (Dam-man) attributed by the official history to all those who worked on the construction of the Itaipu s Dam. Not everyone who came and sat as workers for UNICON Consortium and other contractors, forming the irregular subdivisions of Foz do Iguaçu in Paraná state, were barrageiros (dam-men). In this context, many were rushing into an oppressive and strange work modality. Not enough the hard and stressing journey of work under the gaze of the overseers and security guards, men were recklessly victimized by accidents at work: as the "cathedrals of concrete" came up higher, increased the number of accidents, the repression, the widows and orphans who migrated with other unemployed to the local informality Finally, the uprisings of these workers who entered in the "Total Institution" were studied. Many problems referring to coercion and control lasted dispersed or asleep until the end of the military government in 1985. After this period of junction in trade unions (1986), the workers protested against the excesses of the contractors. However, it was in this already democratic moment, more precisely in 1987, that the "barrageiros" (dam-men) were harshly repressed by the public forces. For this purpose, these forces were helped by secret information produced by the remains of Itaipu Security Advising. This uprising indicated what was happening in other strikes in Brazil. The more the National Constituent Assembly was announced, more and more the repression against social movements increased as occurred in the Itaipu s Dam and it was discussed in the last chapter / Esta dissertação objetiva estudar a organização e a atuação dos aparelhos repressores, formados pelas Agências de Segurança da Itaipu Binacional e pelo Consórcio UNICON, durante o período de 1974 a 1987.

The objective of this dissertation is to study the appropriation of psychoanalysis by Herbert Marcuse, taking as its starting point an analysis of the concepts of surplus repression and the performance principle in Eros and Civilization: A Philosophical Inquiry into Freud. Marcuse would have derived these concepts from the Freudian Repression and the Reality Principle respectively, which do not correspond to the current stage of development of capitalist society anymore. With his conceptual reformulation, he rescues the Freudian theory to argue that a society which is less repressive is possible. This perspective presents a problem since Freud's times, but it suggests some ways of overcoming the repressive society, tends to a diagnosis of increased repression, to the point that the possibility of destruction of civilization. We intend to discuss this critical conceptual metamorphosis of Marcuse and its consequences. Our hypothesis is that such appropriation is plausible insofar as is consistent with the slope of the inaugural Critical Theory Horkheimer in their 1937 article, in which he states that the Traditional Theory can be appropriated by Critical Theory, provided we can historicizing concepts, bringing them ever to nowadays, to make the diagnosis of time / Mestrado / Filosofia / Mestre em Filosofia

The popular habitation always stood out like one of the main priorities of the government's programs, however, almost of constructions were focused on the quantity of buildings than fulfilling the standards and good techniques of engineering. The results, in most of the cases, are houses with high number of pathologies, jeopardized in safety and livability conditions. These remarks are the motivation for this present study, whose objective is to identify the origin and extension of constructions pathologies, in particular, the bad performance of roofs and foundations, confronting the performance of load transmission elements to the soil to the type adopted and to the collapse effect of the soil. In this way, guided by the prior knowledge of the incidence of housing pathologies and the existence of documents to support lawsuits, have been studied, from a total of 9.363 housing units, 589 buildings existing in 13 Housing Complexes of Bauru - SP and region. This collection of information has provided tools in order to present a general overview over the occurrences of pathologies and the origins that caused such damages, specially the settlements of the foundations and deformations on the roofs structures of the houses, according to results, they can reach 66,9% to 97,8% of the total of the buildings studied, respectively. As a solution it was suggested the adequate soil compaction supporting the foundations, besides others practical cares aiming to reduce the incidence of pathologies in edifications of this size. It is expected that the analyses of the listed problems can contribute for higher responsibility in civil constructions, resulting in safety and appropriated buildings to medium and low-income population of the country / Mestrado / Geotecnia / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Caractérisation des complexes contenant l'hélicase à motif DEAD DDX6 dans les cellules humaines / Characterization of the DEAD-box DDX6 containing complexes in human cellsAyache Schillio, Jessica 08 September 2015 (has links)
P-bodies are cytoplasmic granules. Their function is unknown, but they are conserved from the yeast to humans, suggesting an important role through eukaryotes. The expression inhibition of several proteins localized in P-bodies leads to their disassembly. In most cases, a cellular stress induced by arsenite treatment causes P-body assembly, except in cells depleted for DDX6. Since this observation showed that DDX6 is necessary for P-body assembly, to study this protein is a good starting point to further understand the role of P-bodies. This 54 kDa DEAD-box helicase interacts with proteins of the CPEB repression complex in xenopus oocytes, but also with protein of the déadénylation and dacapping complex in yeasts, drosophila and mammals, and with proteins of the miRISC complex. Our project was to determine the DDX6 main protein partners in human cells. To do so, DDX6 containing complexes were purified using HEK293 cells transfected with a plasmid encoding for the FLAG-DDX6-HA. Over 300 partners were identified by mass spectrometry. Three main DDX6 containing complexes were highlighted in human cells: A “CPEB-like” repression complex, the decapping complex, and a complex containing ATXN2 and ATXN2L proteins. Exon junction complex core proteins were also identified as DDX6 partners, raising the possibility that DDX6 interacts with mRNA not yet translated. A large number of ribosomal proteins were also identified with high scores, suggesting that DDX6 interacts with actively translated mRNA. Analyze of cytoplasmic lysates on sucrose gradients showed that DDX6 is partially associated with polysomes. To conclude, these observations showed the multiple roles of DDX6 in human cell, between mRNA repression and degradation. The helicase could allow the recruitment of the repression complex on actively translated mRNA. In a nutshell, the multiple binding of DDX6 on one mRNA could be a way to enable the fixation of repression and degradation complexes at the same time, on the same mRNA.

The Methyl-CpG-Binding Domain Protein 2 (MBD2) : a specific interpret of methylated loci in cancer cellsChatagnon, Amandine 15 December 2009 (has links)
In the past few years, several clinical trials have shown that targeting DNA methylation machinery might be of interest in cancer therapy to restore tumor suppressor genes expression and inhibit tumor growth. The Methyl-CpG-Binding Domain protein 2 (MBD2) is an important constituent of the DNA methylation machinery since this protein is directly involved in the mediation of the epigenetic signal. Moreover, MBD2 seems to show some gene specificity, its inhibition reactivate a limited number of genes. Taken together these data suggest that MBD2 represents potential new target in cancer therapy and, therefore, new insights on MBD2 specificities are, in this context, of importance. To this end, we have developed two different approaches: a candidate genes analysis and a genome-wide analysis, using ChIP-on-chip method, in order to map MBD2 binding sites. The candidate gene approaches are strongly in favour of the “one gene – one MBD” hypothesis, at least for the genes analyzed. Indeed, our results indicate that MBD2 is specifically and directly involved in the transcriptional repression of hTERT and pS2/TFF1 genes. Furthermore, a new role of MBD2 in the fine-scale modulation of these genes was demonstrated, and the antagonist actions between MBD2 and the natural trans-activator of pS2 gene, the estrogen α, were explored. Genome wide distribution of MBD2 binding sites, DNA Methylation profiles, and silencing potential, showed that the MBD2 is a real methylation-dependant transcriptional repressor: 74% of the MBD2 binding promoters are methylated and 65% silenced.

Repression, Civic Engagement, Internet Use, and Dissident Collective Action: the Interaction Between Motives and ResourcesWu, Jun-deh 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation investigates three questions: First, what conditions make dissident collective action such as protest, revolt, rebellion, or civil war more likely to happen in a country? Second, what conditions make citizens more likely to join in dissident collective action? Third, does Internet use play a role in dissident collective action, and if so, why? I argue that motives and resources are necessary rather than sufficient conditions for dissident collective action. I develop an analytical framework integrating motives and resources. Specifically, I theorize that state repression is an important motive, and that civil society is critical in providing resources. Four statistical analyses are conducted to test the hypotheses. Using aggregate level data on countries over time, I find that civil war is more likely to occur in countries where both state repression and civil society are strong. Moreover, the effect of civil society on civil war onset increases as the repression level rises. at the individual level using 2008 Latin American Public Opinion Project surveys from 23 Latin American and Caribbean countries, I find individuals more likely to join in protest when they experience both more repression and greater civic engagement. Moreover, civic engagement’s effect on protest participation increases as people experience more repression. I further find that Internet use constitutes a kind of civic engagement and has effects similar to voluntary group involvement. the effect of Internet use on protest participation decreases as a person’s civic engagement increases. Finally, an individual is more likely to join in protest when experiencing more repression and using the Internet more frequently. Moreover, the effect of Internet use on protest participation increases as a person experiences more repression.
