Demonstrations

Rugh, Jonathan Joseph 06 July 2009 (has links)
A two-part project was used to study the idea of demonstration in architecture. The first was the design and fabrication of cycloidal drawing tools. The second was the design of another studio building for the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. First, the study of cycloidal lines became the catalyst for designing and fabricating cycloidal drawing tools. Drawing a cylcoid is a demonstration of its construction. There are no specialized tools available for drawing these types of lines, so several iterative generations of design were needed to refine the form of the tool and reach adequate accuracy. Second, an additional studio building for the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech was designed. It was designed to be a place for the demonstration of craftsmanship. The building was placed adjacent to Cowgill Hall. The form of the building was explored through traditional tools of architectural design, namely drawings of plans, sections, elevations and details. For the best representation of this thesis, please refer to the book found in the Art and Architecture library. / Master of Architecture

Studies in Conical Form

Randolph, Joel Howard 02 August 2018 (has links)
The design of a conical room for experiencing a fleeting moment was developed through a series of demonstrative studies. The desired effect of a momentary appearance of a ray of light striking a reflective surface in a room based on the predicted relative position of the sun at set times determined the form, shape, proportions, and surface conditions of the room. / Master of Architecture

Om de som tänker annorlunda : En diskursanalys av mediernas rapportering om demonstrationer mot vaccinpasset / About those who think different : A discourse analysis on the news media coverage of demonstration against covid-19 vaccination certificates

Deininger, Lukas January 2022 (has links)
On the 1st of December 2021, the Swedish government decided to implement the use of vaccination certificates for public gatherings and events aiming to reduce the spread of infection of Covid-19. On 22nd of January, protestors gathered in the two biggest cities of Sweden, Stockholm and Gothenburg, to demonstrate against the limitations on freedom in conjunction with vaccination certificates. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Swedish news media has reported on these demonstrations, to establish an understanding how different identities and power relations are developed, whom the interpretive precedence is given to, which words and word clusters are connected to the discourse and which topics are framed as normal or deviating in the news articles.  To answer these questions, a critical discourse analysis in combination with digital text analysis has been used by analyzing articles reporting on the manifestations on the 22nd of January 2022, published in Swedish news media. The theoretical framework is based on framing theory and agenda setting theory as well as the concepts of ethos and critical perspectives on ideology.  The results after the data has been analyzed, reflected and discussed with the theoretical framework and the previous research show that the reporting has been affected by an ideology of what is considered as correct in society. Media is encouraging a correct society based on principles of democracy, law and order. Order is significant in the discourse. The demonstrations against vaccination certificate have affected the order in Swedish society, for example with the participation of right-wing extremist groups. Media do not promote these groups nor so called “foil hats”, but participants with an ethos close to the norms of society. By that, media do not frame all participants of the demonstrations as wrong, but media does indicate that their opinion differs from the normal perception of the discourse in society. The interpretive precedence is given to the police which determines the legitimacy of the demonstrations. The police also relativize the impact of the demonstrations on the social field. By giving the interpretive precedence to the police, media remain nonpartisan.

Demonstrace jako prostředek názornosti v chemickém vzdělávání / Demonstrations as an illustrative tool in chemistry education

Hájková, Zdeňka January 2014 (has links)
Demonstrations are considered an important illustrative tool in chemistry education. Quite often teachers use demonstrations of experiments and multimedia demonstrations. Besides, "non-experimental" demonstrations might also be useful, such as material models and demonstrations based on macroscopic analogy that can be usually carried out only with household items and materials. This dissertation is especially aimed at selecting appropriate demonstrations, at their design, development and use of "non-experimental" demonstrations. Moreover, special attention was paid to the interdisciplinary demonstrations concerning the nanoworld, so called "nanodemonstrations". All "nanodemonstrations" presented are safe, cheap and rather timesaving. Furthermore, they can be carried out in a form of lecture and / or students' demonstration. Newly created as well as adopted (and modified) "nanodemonstrations" were collected into the Czech database of "nanodemonstrations". The database was additionally accompanied with following educational materials concerning "nano": two PowerPoint presentations, worksheets that supplement students' "nanodemonstrations" and worksheets with interdisciplinary tasks. This thesis also deals with the evaluation of "nanodemonstrations" and worksheets in secondary school classes. The...

Inovovaná souprava pro demonstrační pokusy z elektroniky / Innovated set for demonstrative experiments from electronics

VAŠÍČEK, Petr January 2011 (has links)
The first part of this thesis is focused on the advantages of using the experiments during the physics education and their educational values. Furthermore, some types of experiments, their correct metodology of implementation and some other aspects which should be given an appropriate attention by the teacher are theoretically described. Then, some types of demonstrational sets and their brief history are described. The attention is aimed at the demonstrational set of DIDAKTIK, its content and composition. One chapter is devoted to the research of schools equipment for using the demonstrational experiments of electricity and magnetism and their evaluations. The last part deals with some experiments which can be made within this set, their documentation and evaluation. Further, there were worksheets created for some of these experiments. Two of these sheets were used among primary schools for didactic exploring and the reasults were evaluated.

"Gummikulor mot demonstranter i Hongkong" : En kvalitativ textanalys om hur demonstrationerna i Hongkong 2019 gestaltades i två svenska morgontidningar. / "Rubber bullets against protesters in Hong Kong" : A qualitive textual analysis of how the protests in Hong Kong 2019 were framed in two Swedish newspapers.

Mäki, Isella, Lehtonen, Karin January 2021 (has links)
Earlier research shows that news media use violence and conflict to frame demonstrations. A protests news coverage is often negative and portrayed in such a way that impedes the background and message of a demonstration. Demonstrations usually seek media attention to spread their message to a bigger audience. What the media choose to present can have a big impact on how a demonstration is perceived and the outcome of it. Negative news coverage can make a demonstration appear unnecessary and can lead to a loss of power and status in the society.    The purpose of this study is to examine how the protests in Hong Kong 2019 were framed in Swedish news media and if the news coverage follows the protest paradigm. The framing theory, the protest paradigm and news value theory are the theories applied in this study. The method used was a qualitative textual analysis and one article from Dagens Nyheter and one article from Göteborgs-Posten were analyzed.    The results in our study show that the articles, in some way, correlate with the protest paradigm. Violence and conflict occur frequently in both Dagens Nyheter and Göteborgs-Posten’s news coverage of the protests in Hongkong, especially in the beginning of the articles. However, the results also go against the protest paradigm in multiple ways. The newspapers do write about the protesters purpose, goals and background, as well as the police violence.

"Sanningen" Bakom Koranbränningarna : En kritisk diskursanalys av kontroversen kring Koranbränningarna och samhällspolariseringen i Sverige / “The truth” behind the Quranburnings : A critical discourse analysis of the Quranburning controversy and social polarization in Sweden

Issa Abdalrahim, Yaser, Kitmiri, Edon January 2024 (has links)
This study analyzed how mass media portrays specific groups of actors involved in burnings of the quran, more precisely, burners of the quran and demonstrators opposed to it. The study has compiled 18 digitally published news articles derived from four different news agencies. By using critical discourse analysis as a theoretical and methodological framework, the study has applied the three-dimensional model developed by Norman Fairclough to examine the empirical findings. Conducted analysis of the news articles resulted in the identification of three prevalent themes also referred to as discourses. Identified themes were as follows: “The normalization of violent riots”, “Collective culpability of demonstrators”, “The quranburners as victims and the process of victimization of the quranburners” Furthermore, an analysis of the identified themes was conducted. The mentioned themes were further analyzed with textual tools as provided by Fairclough, as well as two sociological theories as necessitated by Fairclough’s theory of critical discourse analysis. The theory of stigmatization and labeling theory were applied. The empirical findings suggest that violent riots are depicted as inevitable consequences, thus undergoing a process of normalization. Furthermore, the protesters present during the manifestations are generalized into specific social groups such as muslims or arabs. Burners of the quran were on the contrary depicted as victims in a vulnerable position. Lastly, a discussion is held regarding the possible repercussions the discourses may have on a societal level and their potential impact on the field of social work.

Yadav, Mayank January 2020 (has links)
Programming a complex robot is difficult, time-consuming and expensive. Learning from Demonstration (LfD) is a methodology where a teacher demonst--rates a task and the robot learns to execute the task. This thesis presents a method which generates reactive robot behaviour learned from demonstration where sequences of action are implicitly coded in a rule-based manner. It also presents a novel approach to find behaviour hierarchy among behaviours of a demonstration. In the thesis, the system learns the activation rule of primitives as well as the association that should be performed between sensor and motor primitives. In order to do so, we use the Playful programming language which is based on the reactive programming paradigm. The underlying rule for the activation of associations is learned using a neural network from demonstrated data. Behaviour hierarchy among different sensor-motor associations is learnt using heuristic logic minimization technique called espresso algorithm. Once relationship among the associations is learnt, all the logical relationships are used to generate a hierarchical tree of behaviours using a novel approach that is proposed in the thesis. This allows us to represent the behaviour in hierarchical way as a set of associations between sensor and motor primitives in a readable script which is deployed on Playful. The method is tested on a simulation by varying the number of targets, showing that the system learns underlying rules for sensor-motor association providing high F1-score for each association. It is also shown by changing the complexity of simulation that the system generalises the solution and the knowledge learnt from a sensor-motor association is transferable with all the instances of that association.
