Chinese Television as a Medium of National Interpellation

Cui, Yawei 24 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation considers how the party-state of the People’s Republic of China has been mobilizing various forms of interpellation in an attempt to sustain a continuous imagination of a particular community defined on the terms of a shared “Chinese” national identity. As well, the research considers how these forms of interpellation have been challenged by a range of complex diasporic viewer responses. Taking media productions of the Mainland China television industry as my point of reference, I have studied in detail, multiple productions of the widely popular, complex program, the Spring Festival Gala (SFG) produced by China Central Television. Though not without its contradictions, this show has employed various interpellative strategies, persistently and continuously hailing viewers into the subject position of loyal members of an enduring “Chinese Nationality.” However, interpellation is one thing, subjectification within it is another. To better grapple with the cultural citizenship of transnationalized Chinese, this dissertation also considers observations regarding the receptions of the SFG by diasporic “Chinese subjects” who now live in Canada. While their continuous imagining of the “Chinese Nationality” helps to better understand the complex mechanisms which contribute to the retaining power of interpellation, their moments of “de-imagining” also shed light on the problems and difficulties of such interpellation. These moments are considered as possible openings to the formation of fluid, multiple Chinese subjectivities that lay the groundwork for a “flexible citizenship” (Ong, 1993; 1999) for all “Chinese,” furthering the endeavor to go beyond certain nationalist and/or statist visions of identity, subjectivity, and citizenship.

TRUE LIES: HOMERIC ??????? AS THE POSSIBILITY AND COMPLETION OF THE RATIONAL SOUL’S SELF-CONSTITUTION IN THE SIXTH ESSAY OF PROCLUS’ COMMENTARY ON THE REPUBLIC

Watson, Daniel James 10 August 2013 (has links)
Proclus is part of a long exegetical tradition that understands Plato and Homer to be in agreement. The Sixth Essay of his Commentary on Plato’s Republic particularly significant because it is the only extant ancient text that attempts to prove the concord of Plato and Homer philosophically. Yet, despite his uniquely reasoned approach, this endeavour suffers from charges of irrationalism. The necessity that drives him to seek this conciliation is thought to come from the pious attachment he has to Homer as an authority rather than the properly philosophical demands of his rational system. The aim of this thesis is to show that Proclus’ need to show Plato and Homer’s agreement is not an irrational adjunct to an otherwise rational outlook, but that it follows from the central doctrines of his philosophy. This will be accomplished through a detailed consideration of Proclus’ doctrine of the poetic ????????. In looking at how Proclus’ reading of Plato in the Sixth Essay is informed by his understanding of ????????, we will see how Homer becomes the means, both of taking the traditional criticisms of Plato’s apparent self-contradiction seriously and also of defending him against them. In looking in turn at how the soul actually experiences the ??????? of Homer’s inspired poetry, it shall become apparent that Homer does not just save the coherence of rational thought in this exterior way, but that his poetry operates as both the possibility and perfection of the rational soul’s various powers.

L'elenchos dans la République de Platon

Pilote, Guillaume 08 1900 (has links)
This study is about refutation (elenchus) in Plato's Republic. I claim that Socrates' use of this method in Book I cannot be considered evidence that the text belongs to an earlier draft of this book, nor of an implicit critique of the elenctic method by Plato. My first chapter shows that the dialectic described in Book VII actually includes the elenchus. The second chapter studies the arguments of Book I and shows that their many flaws should be interpreted in term of Plato's pedagogical motives, and do not suggest that he intended to write a satire. Chapter three shows that, far from criticizing Socrates' method on moral grounds, Book I actually presents the elenchus as a successful tool for moral education. Chapter four explains the moral criticism of the elenchus in Book VII by contrasting education in a perfect city with Socrates' education of already-corrupted men. I conclude by explaining why the Republic's main books do not make use of refutation.

Dialectique et sécularisation chez Charles Taylor

St-Laurent, Guillaume 08 1900 (has links)
The central aim of this work is to assess the most general implications of the interpretation of secularization by Charles Taylor, as it is deployed in ‘A Secular Age’ (2007), for the domain of philosophy of religion. We argue that the hermeneutical approach of Taylor, resting on his philosophical anthropology, binds together in an original and indivisible fashion the problem of secularization and the philosophical reflection on religion. To this effect, I describe his critique of naturalism and the broad lines of his ‘dialectic’ in order to clarify the general orientation of his work. I then move to an analysis of his interpretation of secularization and its implications for the constitutive questions in philosophy of religion, notably regarding the nature of religion, the epistemological status of religious beliefs, the relations between faith and reason as well as between religion and modern science. I conclude on a more critical note with an examination of the ‘metaethical realism’ of our author and by showing that his position might best be understood as the basis for a deepened and reinforced ‘subtraction story’.

Larose, Daniel 08 1900 (has links)
»). / The purpose of this dissertation is to show the impact of the geometrical paradigm on the evolution of the dialectic in the Meno. The first part of this research is devoted to the dialectic of the first dialogues, the Socratic elenchus. This practice of philosophy is then compared to the dialectic of the Meno which is characterized by the introduction of the concept of recollection. The second part of this study concerns the two geometrical passages of the Meno: the duplication of the square and the hypothetical method. The first passage allows Plato to defend the possibility of scientific research, while the second (inspired by geometrical analysis) is presented as a new model for conducting philosophical inquiry. This new method, which consists in reducing the difficulty of a problem by postulating hypotheses, allows to reason from logically posterior things (quality: “is virtue teachable?”) to logically prior things (essence: “what is virtue?”).

Shakespeare and the genre of comedy

Doyle, Anne-Marie January 2006 (has links)
Traditionally in the field of aesthetics the genres of tragedy and comedy have been depicted in antithetical opposition to one another. Setting out from the hypothesis that antitheses are aspects of a deeper unity where one informs the construction of the other’s image this thesis questions the hierarchy of genre through a form of ludic postmodernism that interrogates aesthetics in the same way as comedy interrogates ethics and the law of genre. Tracing the chain of signification as laid out by Derrida between theatre as pharmakon and the thaumaturgical influence of the pharmakeus or dramatist, early modern comedy can be identified as re-enacting Renaissance versions of the rite of the pharmakos, where a scapegoat for the ills attendant upon society is chosen and exorcised. Recognisable pharmakoi are scapegoat figures such as Shakespeare’s Shylock, Malvolio, Falstaff and Parolles but the city comedies of this period also depict prostitutes and the unmarried as necessary comic sacrifices for the reordering of society. Throughout this thesis an attempt has been made to position Shakespeare’s comic drama in the specific historical location of early modern London by not only placing his plays in the company of his contemporaries but by forging a strong theoretical engagement with questions of law in relation to issues of genre. The connection Shakespearean comedy makes with the laws of early modern England is highly visible in The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure and The Taming of the Shrew and the laws which they scrutinise are peculiar to the regulation of gendered interaction, namely marital union and the power and authority imposed upon both men and women in patriarchal society. Thus, a pivotal section on marriage is required to pinion the argument that the libidinized economy of the early modern stage perpetuates the principle of an excluded middle, comic u-topia, or Derridean ‘non-place’, where implicit contradictions are made explicit. The conclusion that comic denouements are disappointing in their resolution of seemingly insurmountable dilemmas can therefore be reappraised as the outcome of a dialectical movement, where the possibility of alternatives is presented and assessed. Advancing Hegel’s theory that the whole of history is dialectic comedy can therefore be identified as the way in which a society sees itself, dramatically representing the hopes and fears of an entire community.

Yelle, Vincent 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to explain in detail the importance of a very precise passage of the Topics, treatise where Aristotle tries to find a method which will allow to reason in a dialectical way. In the second chapter of the first book (I, 2), he expresses in a brief way three utilities that the treatise in question can provide to those who own and control this method properly. First of all, the dialectic would serve as a mental gymnastic to train the mind and give it more flexibility in its reasoning. Secondly, it would be useful in the everyday encounters with others, because it would allow to discuss and argue on any given subject with the first person we could meet. Finally, it also seems that the dialectic would be useful for the "philosophical knowledge ", in the sense that it would go through the puzzles and ultimately, would establish the first principles of each science. In this work, I thus suggest examining each of its claimed utilities to see how, and in which measures, we can really assert that the dialectic turns out profitable for each of the services enumerated in Topics I, 2.

A Critical Evaluation Of The Socialist Journal &quot / aydinlik&quot / Within A Marxian Theoretical Framework

Gundogan, Ercan 01 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE SOCIALIST JOURNAL AYDINLIK WITHIN A MARXIAN THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK G&uuml / ndogan, Ercan Ph.D., Department of Political Science and Public Administration Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Okyayuz July 2005, 855 pages The thesis concerns with the conception of class and revolution in Marxian meta-theory and examines its reception by the Turkish Marxist left through an analysis of the Socialist Journal Aydinlik (1968-1971). Survey demonstrates that the reception is obscured by strategic debates, and is also not perfectly realized due to the needs of the rapid development of the Turkish socialist left after 1960s. Marxian theory is used mainly to justify the national democratic revolutionary strategy which is presented as only valid strategy, against socialist revolutionary strategy. National Democratic Revolutionary strategy is suggested to close the gap between Marxian framework which exclusively focuses on the proletarian socialist politics and the undeveloped revolutionary conditions of the underdeveloped societies. However, this gap is closed only at the expense of creating new gaps between Marx and the country. Class phenomena are analyzed in the framework of the imperialism-feudalism-comprador bourgeoisie alliance and popular or national classes. This strategy suggests that only after national democratic revolution is perfectly completed, socialist revolutionary struggle can be valid. It thereby postpones the possibility of socialist struggle and hence Marx to an undetermined future.
