Teaching Minimum Based Competency Test Skills to Secondary-Aged Learning Disabled Students Through The Use of Precision Teaching

Byrnes, Michael E. 01 May 1986 (has links)
This project investigated whether a precision teaching method used with learning disabled high school students (grades 9-12) could give them the skills needed to pass a minimum based competency test in the area of local, state and national government. The specific objective of this project was to determine if the use of precision teaching enabled the students to retain the facts needed to pass a competency test required for graduation. A multiple-baseline design across behaviors was used to show the effect of precision teaching in mastering the needed facts. The data from each baseline improved and surpassed the set criteria when the intervention was introduced. The Cache School District requires mastery level test score of 70% or higher for each competency test. The pretest scores of the students in this study ranged from 40% to 58%. When all three interventions were completed, the students' test scores ranged from 92% to 100%, thus meeting and surpassing the school district's mastery level.

Disabled People, Effective Practitioners: Enabling a Health Care Workforce that Better Reflects Society

Dearnley, Christine A., Elliott, J., Hargreaves, J., Morris, S., Walker, L., Walker, Stuart A., Arnold, C. 15 December 2010 (has links)
No / In this paper we will discuss the current tensions that exist between UK anti-discrimination legislation and the professional and statutory regulatory bodies (PSRBs) that govern registration of health and social care practitioners in the United Kingdom. The tensions arise from aspirations for a work force that reflects the wider community and the need to safeguard patient safety. We present an overview of the relevant legislation and the requirements of the main health and social care professional statutory and regulating bodies, whose overall aim is safeguarding the general public. Four individual case studies, which have drawn on qualitative and quantitative data to explore some of the ensuing challenges and seek resolutions, are discussed and their outcomes synthesised to make recommendations. Conducting research with disabled participants requires specific considerations; we reflect on these in this paper and discuss our experiential learning.

Sutrikusio intelekto moksleivių motyvavimas sportuoti / Motivation to do sports for mentally disabled students

Škimelienė, Vida 16 August 2007 (has links)
2. Pasitvirtino hipotezė, kad socialinė aplinka ir fizinis pajėgumas įtakoja sutrikusio intelekto mokinių motyvavimą sportuoti. Sveikų vaikų socialinė aplinka daugiau skatina mankštintis ir sportuoti, o... Neįgaliųjų studentų dalyvavimas Lietuvos aukštosiose mokyklose / The Participation of Disabled Students in Lithuanian Higher Education Institutions

Ruolytė-Verschoore, Rūta 10 April 2013 (has links)
Sukurtoji teorija patvirtina A. Giddenso struktūracijos pagrindinę idėją, jog neįgalieji studentai... The goal of this dissertation is to create a grounded theory about disabled students participation in Lithuanian higher education institutions. The research questions were formulated: how are disabled students implementing their agency while participating in the study process in higher education institutions? How does the creation of studying conditions take place in higher education institutions regarding the interaction between disabled students and the members of the academic community? How does the disabled student’s identity change during participation in higher education? The Grounded Theory was chosen here as the methodology of qualitative research. There have been conducted 32 semi-structured interviews with students having different kind of disabilities. Grounded theory about disabled students’ participation in Lithuanian higher education institutions was created. This theory does reveal that the reasons of disabled students‘ individual acts are the restrictions of participation in institutions as well as their aspiration of equality. Disabled students are starting to eliminate the restrictions of participation according to their capacities. Empirical data is analyzed in the light of A. A phenomenological study of students with hidden disabilities in higher education : a cross sectional study of learning support needs in a university in the UK

Shepherd, Rosemary January 2018 (has links)
This phenomenological study was designed and conducted in a Post 1992 ‘new university’ situated in the UK. The aims of the study were a) to investigate inclusive practice amongst disabled students in higher education, b) to explore students’ perceptions on their lived experiences of the support provided c) to explore disabled students’ experiences of the process in gaining support d) to identify the kind of practices disabled students used to support their own effective learning in HE. A sample of 14 students, aged 19 to 56 volunteered to participate in the study. The study was underpinned by inclusive theory and equality policy provided for higher education institutions. Rich data from phenomenological interviews was analysed using thematic and narrative analysis. Analysis of the data uncovered new knowledge for lecturers and support staff in understanding disabled students’ lived experiences as they approached support systems and classrooms in higher education. The key findings involved a) barriers to communication and collaboration between students and lecturers, b) attitudes of staff and the asymmetries of power experienced by students in accessing support, c) issues around student anxiety, dependence and independence and ownership of learning, d) the idea that a reasonable adjustment could be unreasonable and embarrassing and evidence of tokenism in supporting students. The recommendations included a) the need for more in-depth training for all staff in equality and inclusive practice and inclusive course design, b) more support for students in negotiating their Study Needs Assessment, c) bridging the communication gap between Student Wellbeing, lecturers and students. The changes in funding to the Disabled Students’ Allowance came into force during 2016 which has consequently reduced or removed support for students who have disclosed a disability. Due to such changes, it will be even more important for universities to support the training of students, lecturers and support staff in creating and maintaining more inclusive environments in the future.

Although advances have been noticed, because it is a process which needs conceptual, legal, and practice changes, brings itself some doubts, because of existent contradictions between the discourses that proclaim the inclusion and the Brazilian educational reality. Under the vision of the teachers, in the context of the inclusive school, there are several difficulties that the teachers are facing, in practice, with these students. Considering this, despite of the existing production in this field of research, it is necessary to go deeper into the research of this theme from the point of view of the teacher. So, this research investigates the voice and the optics of the teachers of regular classes that have students in situation of inclusion, more specifically the disable ones and deals with different aspects of the inclusion in the school quotidian and the support to the teacher as one of the necessary actions for the inclusive pedagogic practice highlighting the theorists that discourse the inclusive process. The study, of a qualitative character, was realized in four municipal Elementary schools of São Bernardo do Campo with the participation of nine teachers, four principals and four families of disabled children. Considering the analyze of the observed aspects, we can say that the teachers are searching for a re-signification of their practices, however, they need a constant support to deal with the diversity of these students.(AU) / A inclusão de alunos com deficiência em ensino regular no Brasil é um movimento que vem denotando constante crescimento nos últimos anos.

A Study of Job Performance and Related Factors of the Mentally Retarded Student

Lucchelli, Gilbert James 05 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to investigate the relationship of the variables of impulse control, adaptive behaviors, responsible behaviors, intelligence, and duration of institutionalization to job performance of the mentally retarded student at the Denton State School, Denton, Texas. The purposes of this study were 1. to ascertain the correlation of the variables of adaptive behaviors, responsible behaviors, impulse control, duration of institutionalization and intelligence quotient to job performance of the mentally retarded student at the Denton State School; 2. to determine which factor or combination of factors would be most useful for predicting job performance effectiveness of the mentally retarded student. It was concluded that of those variables included in this study, intelligence quotient was the best single predictor of job performance. The combination which was found to be the best predictor of job performance was impulse control and intelligence quotient. The variables included in this study (adaptive behaviors, impulse control, responsible behaviors, intelligence quotient, and duration of institutionalization), taken either singly or in combination, do not correlate highly enough with job performance to be of much value for predicting job performance.

Barriers to school inclusion : an investigation into the exclusion of disabled students from and within New Zealand schools : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Kearney, Alison January 2009 (has links)
Research evidence suggests that disabled students are experiencing forms of exclusion from and within schools, however little is known of the nature of this phenomenon. This study investigated the nature of school exclusion in relation to disabled students. It sought to uncover the factors that exclude disabled students from and within schools, and make recommendations to reduce and eliminate these factors. Using a grounded theory methodology, this research investigated the nature of school exclusion. It explored parents of disabled student’s views about their children’s experiences of school exclusion both from school, and within school. The themes identified by parents were then further investigated with school principals, teachers, teacher aides and school students. This study revealed that disabled students are being excluded from and within school in New Zealand in a number of ways. These include being denied enrolment and/or fulltime attendance at school; being denied access to, and participation within the curriculum; being bullied; inappropriate teacher and/or principal beliefs and practices in relation to funding; a lack of caring, valuing and responsibility by school staff; limited teacher knowledge and understanding; poor relationships between parents and school staff; and exclusionary beliefs and practices in relation to teacher aides. Based on the findings of the study, four propositions were put forward to explain why disabled students are being excluded from and within school. These are that disabled students are considered to be less entitled to human rights than non-disabled students; that there is a lack of school accountability in relation to legal and human rights obligations to disabled students; that inclusive education is predicated on issues of funding and resourcing; and that there is prejudice towards disabled students. Based on the findings of how and why disabled students are excluded from and within school, prompts for classroom teachers and school principals/senior management staff were developed in seven areas shown to be important to this phenomenon. These areas are access, accountability, attitudes, knowledge, responsibility, and funding and resourcing. The prompts are intended to help guide attention and discussion to the issues that are important if exclusion is to be reduced and eliminated. As well as this, recommendations are made for government and government agencies outlining ways that they can contribute to the reduction and elimination of school exclusion for disabled students.
