The impossible flesh : the bodily practices of spanish carmelites nuns and their struggle for sanctity (1560-1640)

Roullet, Antoine 24 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis mainly deals with corporal mortification as it is carried out in counter-reformation Spain convents. It is based on discalced Carmelites’ manuscript and printed lives, read with the tools of historical anthropology. The punishment of their flesh helps the nuns to comply with a common model of sanctity, both for the edification of their counterparts and for their own desire to become saints. But the vertical relationship they claim to have with God is not the only way to understand their violence. Corporal practices reflect both the interactions inside the community, the political and eschatological tensions outside of it and the evolution of Spanish society in the early modern period. The work underlines the tensions and contradictions the religious body, far more explicit when it comes to practice than when one remains focused on wide models of sanctity. It also enlightens the influence of the secular and mundane world on religious practices. Between the 1560’s and the 1640’s, mortification rises and slow down after the 1590’s, but the bloody model of the penitential body remains crucial to understand the nuns‘spirituality

The cutout temporal adopted is justified by the foundation of this mission in Córrego do Bom Jesus and Cambui in 1911 and goes until 1922 when the house of Cambuí is closed and the teresianos left the south of the Minas Gerais State. In this period of more than a decade, several interventions of the Discalced Carmelites are realized in these two communities and they are associated with the attempt of introduction of the directives of the ultramontane reform of the Church in Brazil, taking the present reformative project as a base in the new Diocese of PousoAlegre. Inserted in this new configuration of the Brazilian Catholicism, the teresianos will devote themselves the attempt of gradual substitution of a not much austere, festive, social, familiar religious practice and in a large extent lay for the Roman and reformed Catholicism which emphasis falls back on the sacraments. We intend to study the presence of the teresianos in these parishes considering as the relations between the imposed forms of the ultramontane Catholicism and the identities always reaffirmed by the present laymen in the rites and experts of the local religiosity. The main used fountains were extracted of the illustrated magazine of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, Il Carmelo, of the book of conservation of these parishes, of the manuscript Appunti Storici della nostra missione nel Brasile, of the catholic newspaper Tribuna Sul Mineira, of the Collective Pastorals of 1911 and 1915, the book Actas y Decretos del Concilio Plenario de la América Latina and other documents found in the Archdiocese of Pouso Alegre, in the archive of the Province São José of the Discalced Carmelites (at São Paulo), in the Curia Generalizia of the Order and in the archive of the Roman Province, both in Rome. We point that this reformative project begun before the arrival of the Order, prepared series of interventions with the objective to control and to discipline the local cultural practices considered profane that intensified in the period comprised by the current inquiry, project that stayed far from achieving all its goals / A presente pesquisa estuda o processo de Reforma Ultramontana do catolicismo brasileiro, através da atuação da Ordem dos Carmelitas Descalços da Província Romana, nas paróquias sul mineiras de Cambuí e do Senhor Bom Jesus do Córrego no período de 1911 até 1922.

Josefa v porovnání s ostatními středoevropskými kostely / Roman baroque building elements on St. Joseph church compared to other churches in Central Europe

Šipr, Dominik January 2017 (has links)
The master thesis "Roman baroque building elements on St. Joseph church compared to other churches in Central Europe" deals with Roman buildings features in the Carmelite nuns church of St. Joseph in the Lesser Town of Prague. It elucidates the main architectural theme, which is using the architectonic elements of the dome of St. Peter's basilica in the interior of the church of St. Joseph. The thesis sums facts about Abraham Paris - the most probable author of the ground plan. Apart from the detailed description St. Joseph church, the chapters devoted to architecture describe also some Roman churches which might have served as models for St. Joseph church. The thesis further mentions the influence of contemporary philosophical views on emerging baroque buildings in Rome and in Bohemia. The thesis also includes examples of using architectonic elements from famous Roman buildings understood as a way to communicate certain ideological intentions. Keywords Discalced Carmelite nuns, St. Joseph's church, baroque architecture in the Netherlands, Roman influence in Central Europe, oval ground plan

Importance of discalced Augustinians as the art submitters in Bohemia between year 1623 and Joseph's II. reforms

Šmilauerová, Adéla January 2016 (has links)
The introductory chapter fills a completely blank space concerning the history, organisation and spirituality of the Order of the Discalced Augustinians in the Czech context. The existing literature has so far only briefly outlined this topic; however, it cannot be explored with no knowledge of the 20th -century professional Italian research works or the preserved resources produced by the General Curia in Rome and the 18th century literature of the Order. The thesis also provides a general overview of the activities of the Czech mon asteries of the Discalced Augustinians in the period context, also reflecting the in fluence of the Order on the spiritual and cultural life of the laymen, an influence which, as regards the monastery in Lnare, extends into the early 20th century. The extant resources have helped to describe relations between the members of the Order and the outside world, be it the links to the local clergy or laymen, espe cially burghers and nobility or its dependants. The relationship between the famil ies who financed the foundation of the two latest monasteries (Lnare and Lysa nad Labem) and the monastic community is the focus of specific attention. The monas tery benefactors who financed specific artworks were also recruited from these contacts. In return, they could hope to be...

A small adjective attending light, the archangelic noun : Jessica Powers: a modern metaphysical poet / Jessica Powers: a modern metaphysical poet

Prozesky, Stellamarie Bartlette 2013 April 1900 (has links)
This thesis aims to establish Jessica Powers (1905 – 1988) as a metaphysical poet, to augment the composite definition of metaphysical poetry, and to add two emphases to Christian literary theory. A comprehensive library search on Powers reveals that no scholarly work has been written on her poetry since 2005. A meta-analysis of existing work on Powers demonstrates that the metaphysical aspect of her poetry has not yet been comprehensively examined. Though Powers wrote in a time commonly called ‘post-modern’, my contention is that it would be more accurate to describe her as a metaphysical poet in the traditional sense of that term, as used, for example, of George Herbert (1593 – 1633). I endorse the view that the central theme of all metaphysical poetry is the relation between body and soul (Tanenbaum 2002: 211). It will be seen that this relation is the central concern of Powers’ metaphysical poetry. My close reading of Powers’ work as metaphysical is according to a Christian literary theory which agrees with Hass ‘that the study of the text and textual hermeneutics in the twenty-first century will continue because of a particular resurgence of religion’ (2007: 856). It is augmented by two emphases, a scientific (based on Gallagher’s 2009 study of the neurophysiology of attention), and a philosophical (based on Fromm’s 1976 analysis of the ‘being mode’, and on Buber’s 1947 analysis of attentiveness to the present moment). My study thereby contributes to Christian literary theory. There are one hundred and eighty two poems in The Selected Poetry of Jessica Powers. This thesis refers, to greater or lesser extents, to one hundred and seventy six of the poems, and comprehensive examination of their metaphysical aspect is the primary focus of the thesis. My examination of the poems demonstrates that Powers’ poetry can justly be described as metaphysical, which definition of her work serves to highlight an important and hitherto neglected aspect of her work, that she is a metaphysical poet of the finest calibre, and that renewed attention to her work is timely. / English Studies / D. Influences et conséquences d'un siècle d'enseignement de la langue française en Irak (1869-1958) / The influences and consequences of a century's French Language Teaching in Iraq (1958-1869)

Alhaidar, Maha 15 January 2018 (has links)
We are dealing here with education in Iraq under the Ottoman Empire, in the nineteenth and twentieth century's, in a once multi-ethnic and multi-confessional country. During the Tanzimat, Iraq benefited from the reforms of Governor Midhat Pasha. Several Christian, Jewish and different communities' schools existed before Western religious missions (Carmelites, Dominicans, Alliance Israelite Universally). The evolution of the different institutions and their possible links are described here. From French and Iraqi archives, a precise panorama of Iraqi education is established since 1908. We highlight the role of the private schools of the French Catholic and Jewish missions which disseminated French language and culture (secularism) in Iraq (printing, translations, press), with the support of French diplomacy till and after the government of Vichy.Seven portraits of Iraqi intellectuals illustrate the French influence as well as the rehabilitation of the Arabic language. We believe we contribute in this way to a better knowledge of Iraq in the nineteenth century and to revitalize the cultural exchanges between our country and France.

'Seek the Eyes of Mary': A Widow and a Virgin's Illuminating Invitation

Kryscynski, Kristina Gayle Heiss 09 April 2020 (has links)
A deep visual analysis of Ludovico Carracci’s 1588 Madonna and Child, Angels, and Saints Francis, Dominic, Mary Magdalene and the Donor Cecilia Bargellini Boncompagni with an emphasis on the role of the patron, the significance of the locality, and the visual semiotics of the Virgin Mary’s gaze in prompting conversion in the repentant prostitutes of the Carmelite convertite convent associated with Ss. Filippo and Giacomo in Bologna, Italy. Including a commentary on contemporary social expectations of modest behavior and the painting’s deliberate incorporation of inappropriate female behavior towards a religious purpose. A discussion of uniquely Carmelite iconography, the use of Ignatian mental prayer in convents, and self-determination in imagery by a Bolognese aristocratic woman.
