Attitudes towards disciplinary measures among managers and workers in Bophelong hospital Mahikeng / Portia Ellen Segwai

Segwai, Portia Ellen January 2011 (has links)
This study examines the attitudes towards disciplinary measures among managers and workers at the Bophelong psychiatric hospital, Mafikeng. This is based on the fact that undisciplined workforce may lead to disorder in the workplace and eventually to an organisation's failure to reach its objectives. From a population of four hundred workers and one hundred managers. a simple random sampling technique was used to select sixty workers and forty managers. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire made up of six different sections. The data collected was sorted, coded and analysed using SPSS. Frequency counts and mean deviations were used to describe the data. The results of the study show that 47 percent of the workers and 35 percent of managers are between 30 to 40 years old. About 69 percent of workers are female while 70 percent of the managers are male. The common educational level among workers is matric while managers had Diploma and BSc degree. In terms of attitude to disciplinary measures, seventy three percent of workers agree that disciplinary measures are legal at BPH as opposed to eight percent who disagree. Seventy five percent of managers agree that disciplinary measures are legal whilst twelve percent agreed. Sixty percent of workers disagreed that disciplinary measures are non sequential at BPH whilst thirteen percent agree. In terms of knowledge of disciplinary measures, sixty six percent of workers at BPH are aware of written warning and Employee Assistance Programmes as disciplinary techniques. Sixty five percent of workers at BPH are aware of the final written warning, verbal warning and counselling as disciplinary techniques. Sixty one percent of workers at BPH are least commonly aware of the Performance Management and Development System as a disciplinary technique. Results on implementation of disciplinary measures show that seventy percent of worker mostly had verbal warnings: sixty eight percent final written warning and sixty six percent salary deductions and written warnings as disciplinary measures used against them. Fifty six percent of workers least had withholding all privileges; fifty percent demotion and forty five percent withholding certain privileges as disciplinary measures used against them. Seventy percent of managers mostly had verbal warnings: sixty eight percent final written warnings and sixty six percent salary deduct ions and written warnings as disciplinary measures used against them. Fifty six percent of managers least had withholding all privileges; fifty percent demotions and forty five percent withholding certain privileges as disciplinary measures used against them. With respect to constraints to the implementation of disciplinary measures, forty percent of BPH workers cited head office taking too long, unions being too defensive whilst workers were resistant. Twenty six percent cited unqualified managers as one of the most common constraints towards the implementation of disciplinary measures. The study concludes by advocating the need to review and enforce discipline at the work place if service delivery has to improve. / Thesis (MBA) North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, 2011

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PRACTICES IN EDUCATION: A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF SUSPENSION RATES AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL

Katic, Barbara 01 June 2017 (has links)
The negative effects of retributive disciplinary measures in school settings are well documented. Exclusionary practices, such as suspensions, position students on the school-to-prison pipeline, perpetuating a cycle of failure. Restorative justice practices in educational settings provide an alternative to the retributive approach to student discipline. In this research study, a middle school in California was examined for its implementation of restorative justice practices. Numerical data pertaining to a five-year suspension history report for the school were utilized for the quantitative analyses, and four individual chi-square goodness of fit tests were conducted. The results demonstrated that the implementation of restorative justice played a significant role in the declining student suspensions across school years. It was found that the introduction of restorative practices to the middle school played a role in creating an inclusive school environment, with student suspensions having been applied to a lower proportion of African American and Hispanic students from pre-implementation of restorative justice to post-implementation. Through the use of a restorative framework, students may learn how to solve problems and repair relationships in school and life events, rather than being placed on the school-to-prison pipeline.

Regmatige dissiplinere maatreels in die klaskamer : n' gevallestudie

Muller, Catherina Johanna Petronella 11 1900 (has links)
The way in which educators’ competency to enforce disciplinary measures in the classroom is influenced by learners’ fundamental rights is investigated in this study. An in-depth literature study was conducted, and questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data at five rural high schools in the Southern Cape. The research findings indicate that participants’ understanding of the stipulations of important relevant acts and government notices is insufficient to manage problem situations regarding discipline with confidence. There is undoubtedly a need for information sessions and/or workshops that not only convey information on a theoretical level, but apply the stipulations of relevant legal sources and the principles of effective classroom management to educators’ daily classroom situations in a practical and functional way. A positive approach to discipline and restorative disciplinary measures that are based on respect and the positive development of learners are upheld, and various important principles that will promote more effective classroom management are suggested. / This study aims to present the consensual government as an substitutive means to the imposition of disciplinary administrative penalty. From the evolution of the state model, the constitutional and democratic rule of law arises, responsible for introducing the Administrative Law a new theoretical construct that allows the reading of legal institutions. It is argued that in the context of contemporary Administrative Law, whose main purpose is the defense of the citizen and the realization of fundamental rights, the establishment of a dialogue with the civil servant, as a way to reach a consensus, an essential measure for realization of the constitutional principle of administrative efficiency. It analyzes the evolution of the State model and the legal model that offers support, so that it shows the existence of a fundamental consensus on the development of administrative activity. The study of the disciplinary administrative proceedings, with the investigation of the principles that make up the disciplinary legal framework, the definition of the legal nature of the disciplinary action and the problems that occur in administrative practice offer subsidies to the paradigm shift proposed in this scientific work: overcoming a traditional and punitive model for a contemporary and.

Naicker, Sandra 07 1900 (has links)
The aim of the study was to understand the teachers’ experiences of learners with disciplinary problems. A literature study was conducted on various issues related to disciplinary problems in schools. In the empirical investigation a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological research design was used. The study was conducted in one secondary school in KwaZulu-Natal. The purposive sample comprised of 10 teachers who experienced discipline problems and two teachers who were knowledgeable about the issue. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the data were analysed and interpreted by means of the theoretical frameworks of the Bar-On Model of Emotional Intelligence and the Bronfenbrenner ecological model of child development. The findings revealed how disciplinary problems impacted negatively on the emotional and social well-being of the teachers. It was concluded that teachers needed improved coping strategies and collaborative support from the School Management Team and the Department of Education to deal with disciplinary problems. / Inclusive Education / M.
