Babkine-Ringuette, Astrid 08 1900 (has links)
The following essay provides a general portrait of the relationship to domestic space of fictional characters in Fanny Britt’s novels “Les maisons” and “Faire les sucres”. Certain concepts from social geography such as the identity with place, the practices and representations of place have provided very useful keys for understanding the characters’ inhabiting of space. The analysis shows that individual desires modulate the practices and representations of inhabited space. Moreover, it emerges from this study that mourning occupies a preponderant place in the representation of home. I have attempted to explore the possible relations between these two objects within the framework of my creative approach. The narrator is gradually led to mourn the loss of the inhabited space.

White-ground lekythoi in context : An analysis of the geographical distribution, contexts, and value of white-ground lekythoi in the 5th century BCE

Eliasson, Carl William January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyse and interpret the distribution of white-ground lekythoi with a known context from the 5th century BCE. Exploring white-ground lekythoi in context is a complex matter, as many lekythoi lack archaeological documentation. The purpose of this study is to locate and map white-ground lekythoi with available archaeological documentation in order to lay the groundwork of their geographical distribution and interpret how they were used and could have been viewed from a socio-economic perspective in different regions. The study has shown that white-ground lekythoi were distributed throughout the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Levant, and have been found in various contexts such as funerary, domestic and religious space depending on the region. The chronological distribution indicates that white-ground lekythoi were popular in locations such as Eretria, Gela and Macedonia, before becoming adopted in Attic funerary activities during the second half of the century. This suggests a more multifunctional use of the vessel than only being a funerary libation vessel which is the traditional scholarly approach to the vessel’s function. Lastly, this thesis addresses the value of white-ground lekythoi. The hypothesis is put forward that the vessels increased in value when being found in limited numbers and with what could be considered luxurious artefacts made for both a local and foreign market.

Att komma hem ska vara en schlager : Om hemkänsla hos unga vuxna i Malmö / Coming home to the tune of a pop song : How young adults in Malmö perceive home

Tjäder, Filippa, Tjäder, Lovisa January 2024 (has links)
The following thesis defines home and the feeling of home as more of a state of mind than a concept. Young adults’ perception of home is analyzed in this thesis through mapping out aspects and patterns which may shed insight into how home and the feeling of home is perceived and created. This thesis furthers research undertaken in previous studies on home and domesticity, as well as shed light on how young adults in Malmö perceive home through interviews in their private homes. Through taking inspiration from Henri Lefbvres theory of production of space, in which space can be perceived through three interrelated aspects, this study aims to explore how spacial practices contribute to young adults’ formation of a sense of home. Everyday practices, routines, and networks are all factors that have the potential to influence how young adults ascribe the meaning of home to places. Through a theoretical framework and understanding of the concept sense of place (Easthope, 2004) the study further examines the potential connections between identity and previous experiences of home and home environments in relation to contemporary home making among young adults.  By highlighting both conscious and unconscious elements of homemaking, the study looks to provide an alternative understanding of the definition of home and sense of home, focusing on young adults aged 20-35. To conclude, this paper demonstrates that spaces and places function as cross border structures in which people create meaning through experiences and perceptions of home.

The adaptive reuse of lost and wasted spaces within the eThekwini Municipality : a case study of the Durban Esplanade and The Point .

Gungaparsad, Kelvin. 21 October 2014 (has links)
This research study addresses the issues associated with lost and wasted urban spaces. Lost and wasted spaces refer to areas which have no human activity or proper human interaction. They are the leftover unstructured landscape at the base of buildings. They also include abandoned buildings, waterfronts, train yards, vacated military sites, and industrial complexes. The research outlines the causes of lost and wasted urban spaces which occur within the eThekwini Municipality and urbanised spaces in general. Through the use of case studies and precedent studies, the research study investigates the various techniques, technological advances and approaches that could alleviate wasted spaces in the city. The Durban Esplanade and Point Waterfront development constitute the main case study areas; however, to fully understand how and why lost and wasted spaces occur within the urban environment, various other spaces which make up the cityscape were also investigated. For example, the city transport infrastructure and green spaces do not form part of the case studies, but have been included as part of the research into lost and wasted spaces. The research study seeks to take the issue of lost and wasted urban spaces a step further by combining it with issues related to sustainability. Through the use of the case studies, various possible solutions and alternatives to the alleviation of lost and wasted urban spaces are outlined and investigated. Examples of how lost and wasted urban spaces could be transformed from problem areas to spaces of opportunity are also explored. This was achieved by making use of computer-aided design and graphic illustrations to indicate the possible solutions that could form part of a holistic approach to the issues surrounding lost and wasted spaces in the built environment. The current planning legislation is outlined in order to provide a thorough understanding of the interconnection between environmental and sustainability issues which relate directly to the cause of lost and wasted spaces. Furthermore, the research study highlights the involvement of various built environment disciplines, including planners, architects and urban designers and investigates their role in the alleviation of lost and wasted urban space. / M.T.R.P. Daleko do klidu: prostor a domesticita v díle Medbh McGuckian a Leontie Flynn / Far from Peace: The Images of Space and Domesticity in the Poetry of Medbh McGuckian and Leontia Flynn

Nováková, Lucie January 2020 (has links)
1 ABSTRACT Key words: Northern Irish poetry, Leontia Flynn, Medbh McGuckian, domesticity, domestic space, the Troubles, post-Agreement poetry The aim of the thesis is to observe the Northern Irish conflict from the vantage point of domestic space as it is reflected in Northern-Irish poetry of the last 40 years. The thesis builds on the notion that houses and homes are not simply private places but images of the outside world. To illustrate this premise, the works of two Northern Irish poets have been selected: Medbh McGuckian and Leontia Flynn. Divided by time, but not space, their poetry is to be placed into the context of Northern Irish poetry during the Troubles and the post-Agreement period. McGuckian's poetry is engaged with making a sense of the distinction between public and private spheres (Wills 1993), whereas Flynn's poetry, and post-Agreement poetry in general, shows signs of attempts to discover and establish her place within the context of the Troubles. In formulating her stance, Flynn relies on a perspective gained by leaving home and memories of growing up during the Troubles behind and travelling abroad (Heidemann 2016). Both poets write about the Troubles in light of the division between private and public spheres, thus illustrating how the violent politics have been part of Northern Irish...

“Document[s] in madness” : female mental (dis)abilities in Hamlet and The Changeling

Berrached, Salma 08 1900 (has links)
My thesis examines the on-stage manifestations of the different types of female madness presented in William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s The Changeling. This is mainly accomplished through the exploration of the interwoven relations between notions such as gender, the female body, and domestic spaces. In my analysis, I primarily draw on the Renaissance understanding of madness in tandem with modern trauma and disability theories. I read the madness of these characters, feigned and real, as forms of mental (dis)ability. This thesis thus offers novel insights on the perception of early modern female distraction. Divided into two chapters, the first deals with the causes engendering the metamorphosis of Ophelia’s psyche from a state of sanity into a state of madness, placing emphasis on the effect of her youth on her mental transition. The second explores Isabella and Beatrice-Joanna’s mental dispositions, respectively, through the incorporation of concepts such as dissembled disability, ravishment, and trauma. In this endeavor it is noteworthy that these characters blur the lines between sanity and madness.
