Effervescent Breakup and Combustion of Liquid Fuels: Experiment and Modelling / Effervescent Breakup and Combustion of Liquid Fuels: Experiment and Modelling

Broukal, Jakub January 2014 (has links)

Rising Temperatures and the Damselfly Shrinkage / Stigande temperaturer och krympande flicksländor

Haglund, Ernie Hacko January 2023 (has links)
Body size governs how temperature affects an organism. As temperature vary on different geographical scales, it mediates activity based on size. How does temperature distribute different sized individuals - and what reproductive fitness follow? This study involves the damselfly Enallagma exsulans and field studies at lake Fayetteville, United States. By measuring body length, temperature, copulatory status, and egg counts, I perform regression analysis to determine the fitness implications of varying temperature. Smaller individuals manage to stay active at higher temperatures, they mate at a higher rate, and they generate more eggs. My study contrasts previous research and highlights both the relevance and complexity of specificity when connecting temperature to fitness.

Byhmer Svensson, Fanny, Gustafsson, Olivia, Tornberg, Ida January 2022 (has links)
Clothes of the same size and from the same company, can differ radically from each other. Likewise, the same size and fit can also differ between different companies. A consumer can order the same size and receive products that differ greatly in perceived and actual fit. Although there have been studies made on different parts of companies size strategy, there has not been any study that combines them and looks at the different strategies as a whole. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine the size strategies of Swedish fashion companies’ ladies assortment and whether a change in strategy would affect the returns. Furthermore, this includes whether companies’ size strategies correspond to the customers’ expectations on size and fit. The method was conducted by semi-structured interviews with three different Swedish fashion companies and by a quantitative survey-study towards female consumers above the age of 20. This was made in order to get a perspective on the different size strategies from both companies and consumers. The themes examined throughout this paper are samples, measurement charts, returns, consumers, improved fit and profitability. The result from the four interviews and the 96 survey answers shows that there exists a dissonance between the way companies work and customers’ expectations on sizes and fit that companies offer. Opportunity to reduce this dissonance would have been if all companies changed their size strategies and instead started using the same measurement list och size system. Furthermore, companies could implement their pattern design on the internet to avoid different variations in fit due to the use of different suppliers. Likewise, to maintain virtual test rooms for consumers gives them a chance to test a garment online before purchasing. By offering virtual testing rooms online, it would have been possible to avoid several of the returns that occur due to the need of ordering the same garment in different sizes. Creating their own patterns would result in fewer returns and thus a positive effect on profitability, as the companies should be able to offer sizes and fits that did not depend on their choice of supplier. The report is written in Swedish.

Effects of Tubicolous Polychaetes On Intertidal Substrates In Cobequid Bay, Nova Scotia

Featherstone, Raymond Paul 05 1900 (has links)
<p> Populations of three tubicolous polychaetes, Clymenella torquata, Spiophanes wisleyi and Sabellaria vulgaris located in the intertidal zone of the south shore of Cobequid Bay, Nova Scotia were studied for their effects on the surrounding sediment. Grain size measurements were made of the tubes and the surrounding sediment. T-tests were made on the resultant differences between the Inman sorting and mean statistics of the two sand populat ions . The percentages of heavy and light minerals were also measured with the use of a binocular microscope. The differences in sorting and mean grain size between the tubes and substrate may affect stability and porosity of the sediment and effect sediment structures easily identifiable in the geologic record. </p> <p> Clyrnenella torquata inhabits a low energy intertidal sandy envir onment and increases the porosity of the sediment by its feeding habits. Stabilization of the sediment may be effected by high population densities of Clymenella (densities around 420/m^2). Tubes were built with preferential grain sizes. Spiophanes wisleyi exists in phenomenally high population densities in low-energy areas. The large numbers of tubes (up to 98,000/m^2) bind the sediment; tubes are made of virtually the same grain sizes as the substrate; no bioturbation occurs during the construction of the tubes. The latter two factors make preservation potential very low in the geologic record. Sabellaria vulgaris in the study area is of little sedimentological importance. Population densities are too low to affect the surrounding substrate. This species exists in a high energy zone a characteristic of fauna which build reefs. Reef formation by sabellariids may have been important in the geologic past and is locally important today in the North Sea (Schafer, 1972) and Florida (Gram, 1968). </p> / Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Unspecific interactions in different batch variations of agarose based base matrices at different NaCl concentrations.

Ghofranpanah, Kejvan January 2022 (has links)
Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) separates molecules based on their actual size rather than their molecular weight. This indicates that the smaller a molecule is, the longer it will be held in the column since it can penetrate the pores more effectively than a bigger molecule, resulting in a longer retention time, whereas the larger molecule has a shorter retention time. In order to achieve reliable and accurate results the asymmetry factor of the packed columns should be between 0.6-1.4. The aim for this project was to examine whether or not the batch variations of the base matrix used to derive WorkBeads™ 40S and 40Q displayed either hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions by running different types of proteins through columns packed with the base matrices. The project was performed using an ÄKTA explorer equipped with an ultraviolet (UV) detector and a refractive index detector (RID). The data was gathered and analyzed with the Unicorn™ by Cytiva. The results from the first experiments showed that lysozyme did not elute as expected or not at all, thus leading to a concern that the there might be some hydrophobic interactions in the base matrix, which is a porous media in the form of spherical particles that have been selected for their physical stability and inertness (lack of reactivity and adsorptive properties), and lysozyme. With this suspicion in mind, the different batches of the base matrix underwent hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC), where the results may be interpreted in a way that there might electrostatic interactions instead of hydrophobic interactions. However, due to the gel not being suitable for HIC the results were unreliable. By subsequently running lysozyme and other proteins through the columns at different NaCl concentrations the results showed consistent elution at NaCl concentrations &gt; 150 mM, yet inconsistent at a concentration of 150 mM for lysozyme. The elution order by size showed that although lysozyme has a larger hydrodynamic radius (Rh) than cytochrome c it eluted later, which is theoretically incorrect, but it might be owing to some of the base matrix's characteristics or the lysozyme's dual nature of expressing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions on the base matrix. Because of the inconsistent results from lysozyme, another experiment just at 150 mM was conducted where lysozyme did elute consistently with a KD value &lt; 1.  Lastly, a titration was performed on the base matrix where some of it was brominated and some of it was not, which was the reference. The results showed that there could be hydrophobic interactions on the brominated sample and hydrophilic interactions on the reference sample. However, what is more likely is that lysozyme is an unreliable protein to use to determine hydrophobicity on this type of gel.

The Structure and Climate of Size: Small Scale Schooling in an Urban District

LeChasseur, Kimberly January 2009 (has links)
This study explores mechanisms involved in small scale schooling and student engagement. Specifically, this study questions the validity of arguments for small scale schooling reforms that confound the promised effects of small scale schooling structures (such as smaller enrollments, schools-within-schools, and smaller class sizes) with the effects of the school climates assumed to follow from these structural changes. Data to address this issue was drawn from the Philadelphia Educational Longitudinal Study - one of the few publically-available datasets to include student-level measures of school-within-a-school participation and relative quality - and supplemented by school-level data from the National Center for Education Statistics' Common Core of Data. Regression analyses were designed to examine whether academic press and/or personalized teacher-student relationships - two aspects of school climate often associated with small scale schooling - mediate the relationships between small scale schooling structures and student engagement. The results suggest a pattern of widespread connections between small scale schooling structures and students' emotional engagement in school, but only a loose connection between these structures and students' behavioral engagement in school. Furthermore, school climate does, in fact, mediate many of the relationships between small scale schooling structures and emotional engagement; however, it does not fully mediate the relationship between small scale schooling structure and behavioral engagement. Findings relating student engagement to the quality of small learning communities relative to others in the same school suggest that comprehensive schools that are broken down into smaller within-school units may create a new mechanism for tracking students. Those who participate in relatively high quality small learning communities like school more and participate in more extracurricular activities/sports than students who participate in relatively low quality small learning communities or in no small learning community at all. These relationships are not mediated by school climate. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that the results of small scale schooling reforms are largely dependent on the school climates where they are instituted. / Urban Education

Determination of the Leak Size Critical to Package Sterility Maintenance

Keller, Scott Wayne 09 April 1999 (has links)
This study was divided into four sections: the literature review; the mechanism by which a package defect becomes a leak; and the imposed pressures generated within a package during distribution; comparison of the threshold leak size to the critical leak size and their effect on loss of package sterility; and the relationships between microorganism characterisitics and the threshold leak size, and their effect on the critical leak size. Section II. The mechanism by which a package defect converts to a leaker in an effort to develop a relationship between the threshold leak size and loss of package sterility was studied. The threshold leak size is the hole size at which the onset of leakage occurs. The threshold pressure is that which is required to initiate a leak. Leak initiation was studied in terms of the interaction between three components: liquid attributes of liquid food products, defect size, and pressures required to initiate liquid flow. Liquid surface tension, viscosity, and density were obtained for sixteen liquids. The imposed pressures (Po) required to initiate flow through microtubes of IDs 0, 2, 5, 7, 10, 20 or 50 m, were measured using 63 test cells filled with safranin red dye, tryptic soy broth, and distilled water with surface tensions of 18.69 mN/m, 44.09 mN/m, and 64.67 mN/m, respectively. Significant differences were found between observed threshold pressures for safranin red dye, tryptic soy broth, and distilled water (p < 0.05). Liquids with small surface tensions such as safranin red dye required significantly lower threshold imposed pressures than liquids with large surface tensions such as distilled water (p < 0.05). An equation was developed to quantify the relationship between liquid surface tension, threshold imposed pressure, and defect size. Observed threshold pressures were not significantly different (p > 0.05) than those predicted by the equation. Imposed pressures and vacuums generated within packages during random vibration and sweep resonance tests were measured for brick-style aseptic packages (250 ml), metal cans size 76.2-mm x 114.3-mm (425 ml), quart gable top packages (946 ml), one-half gallon gable top packages (1.89 L) and one-gallon milk jugs (4.25 L). Significant differences were found between packages for observed generated pressures during vibration testing (p < 0.05). An equation to calculate the threshold like size based on liquid surface tension and imposed pressure was established. Section III. The onset of liquid flow through a defect as a result of imposed positive pressures or vacuum were linked to the sterility loss of a package. Five-hundred sixty-three test cells, each with microtubes of 0, 2, 5, 7, 10, 20 or 50 m, manufactured to simulate packages with defects, were biochallenged via an aerosol concentration of 106 cells/cm3 of Pseudomonas fragi Lacy-1052, under conditions of imposed positive pressure or vacuum of 20.7, 13.8, 6.9, 0, -6.9, -13.8, -20.7 kPa, respectively and temperatures of 4 , 25 and 37 C. A statistically significant relationship between loss of sterility due to microbial ingress in test cells and the initiation of liquid flow were found (p < 0.05). Microbial ingress was not found in test cells with microtube IDs of 2 m. Leak sizes critical to the sterility maintenance were found to be different based on the liquid surface tension, and imposed package pressures. The threshold leak size where the onset of liquid flow was initiated, and the critical leak size at which loss of sterility occured were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Section IV. The effects of microorganism size and motility, and the imposed pressure required to initiate liquid flow, on the leak size critical to the sterility of a package were measured. Pseudomonas fragi Lacy-1052, Bacillus atrophaeus ATCC 49337, and Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC 29007 were employed to indicate loss of package sterility. One hundred twenty-six microtubes with interior diameters (I.D.s) of 5, 10, and 20 m and 7 mm in length were used as the manufactured defects. Forty-two solid microtubes were used as a control. An equation was used to calculate imposed pressures sufficient to initiate the flow of tryptic soy broth through all defects. No significant differences were found for loss of sterility as a result of microbial ingress into test cells with microtube ID sizes of 5, 10, and 20 m between the test organisms (p > 0.05). Interactions between the initiation of liquid flow as a result of imposed pressures, and the sterility loss of test cells were significant (p < 0.05). / Ph. D.
