SME Performance and Its Relationship to Innovation

Abouzeedan, Adli January 2011 (has links)
Current SME performance models suffer from a number of disadvantages. The models use intensively a business ratio approach, they look at SMEs as a homogenous group, they consider firms to be closed systems, they do not directly incorporate the impact of an enterprise’s innovation activities, and finally they are complex and rely on sophisticated statistical refining methods making them unpractical to use by SME managers. There are four major challenges when one tries to build SME performance models that lack these deficiencies. The first challenge is that the desired performance evaluation model must optimally incorporate both quantitative and qualitative input. The second challenge is that the model must incorporate non-financial input parameters, such as firm size and age (among others), in the performance evaluation models. The third is that the model must consider the variety of SMEs as concerns their business sectors, nationalities, sizes, and ages. The final challenge is that the model must be able to utilize existing limited information available from the SMEs bookkeeping practices in an optimal way. The thesis addresses three questions related to constructing a better SMEperformance model, namely (1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of the existing models used in evaluating SME performance? (2) What characterizes a comprehensive model for measuring SME performance with acknowledgement of the firm’s innovation activities? (3) How can a firm’s innovation activities be enhanced in relation to the firm’s external environment? To construct a model that copes with these challenges, I used a literature-based selection of parameters as well as a theory-based selection. I used both a conceptual approach and an empirical approach to discuss and propose a model, the Survival Index Value (or SIV) model, as an alternative to the existing performance models for SMEs. The major contributions of this thesis to the field of SME performance can be summarized in three outcomes: the SIV model as a new model of SME performance evaluation, the ASPEM as a new tool for strategic utilization of SME performance models, and a new approach to account for innovation in relation to the external environment of the firm using the IBAM tool. The work adds to the theory of the firm, as it presents a new way of evaluating firm performance. It also contributes to bridging the theory of the firm to organizational theory, by elevating the significance of networking and its impact on SME efficiency.

Opening up the NPD process : a case study within the oil and gas industry

Grönlund, Johan, Rönnberg Sjödin, David January 2008 (has links)
This article investigates the practical application of open innovation principles within industrial new product development (NPD). Previous research on open innovation has primarily focused on the notion as such and not yet on how to integrating the principles of open innovation with well- established models for NPD. We aim to help close this knowledge gap. The purpose of this study is to explore how firms can benefit from opening up the NPD process by integrating the principles of open innovation with the well-known and widespread Stage-Gate model. To do this, previous literature is studied in combination with case study data investigating the existing occurrences and potential opportunities of employing the principles of open innovation within NPD at a firm within the upstream Oil & Gas business. Our empirical study shows that there are great virtues in the systematization of the already occasionally occurring open innovation practices. Additionally, a noticeable desire to pursue a more open approach to NPD was identified among the respondents. The results of this study allowed the enactment of a practitioner-oriented work model which exploits the advantages of “openness” while simultaneously capturing the benefits deriving from the systematic and structured approach implied by the Stage- Gate model. Furthermore, by opening up the Stage-Gate model, yet another opportunity is exposed: to allow the work model to facilitate a systematic adjustment of the way value is created and captured within the company (I.e. its business model and its underlying core capabilities) to the external environmental dynamics. This aspect is further included in the new work model. The main implications of this study are that is indicates great opportunities and possibilities in opening up the NPD process. It further introduces an easy applicable work model that facilitates the opening. Moreover, our results apply not only to firms within the Oil & Gas industry, but to all NPD processes where a Stage-Gate methodology is employed. /
Validerat; 20101217 (root)

Framework para definir modelos de processos específicos de desenvolvimento de PSS / Framework for defining specific process models to develop PSS

Marques, Caio Augusto Nunes 26 March 2018 (has links)
Companies historically focused on the production of manufactured goods have faced a number of challenges over the past few decades. Notably, the intensification of competitiveness in the various markets has contributed to the transformation of various products into commodities of similar quality and performance. The dispute between players ceases to be based on technological leadership and tends to be limited to the search for lower production costs. At the same time, rises the awareness of various actors in society regarding environmental issues and, consequently, the pressure on industries to contribute to the creation of a more sustainable society. The creation of products and services bundles to deliver value in use or through the performance of a function is a strategy that has been studied to overcome the aforementioned challenges. The creation and offering of a Product-Service System (PSS) by a manufacturing company has the potential to contribute to the three perspectives of sustainability, but it also poses some challenges. The development of products and services must be done in an integrated way, considering their relationships and, often, the company\'s business model has to be changed. In order to overcome the development challenges, there are generic PSS development process models proposed for companies to define their own specific models. These models have been proposed for different development contexts and usually carry the biases of their authors, thus presenting strengths and limitations. The present work aims to propose a framework for defining specific process models to develop Product-Service Systems. For this, this work uses the paradigm of the hypothetical-deductive method and the DRM (Design Research Methodology) methodological approach. The research methods used are: experts\' panel, corpus linguistics and frame semantics, focus group, case study, systematic literature review and content analysis. It was possible to obtain three unpublished contributions: the set of 310 synthesis activities; the analysis of the 15 PSS development process models; and the framework itself. The first two are contributions to theory. The synthesis activities correspond to all the PSS development activities prescribed by the PSS development process models available in the literature, constituting its state of the art. The analysis of the process models objectively evidenced their different profiles, with each model prioritizing certain categories of activities in comparison to others. The framework created was applied to two PSS design project in two startups, being a contribution to practitioners in industries that can use it to define their specific PSS development processes models from a broader base of activities than in any of the 15 generic models analyzed.

Critical factors to the design and adoption of e-business by traditional companies

Zilber, Silvia Novaes 04 December 2002 (has links)
Although many established companies are well positioned to succeed at e-business thanks to strong brands, customer relationships and logistical systems, the toughest challenges of e-business are less strategic than organizational. The thesis focuses on how companies in the “real world" tackle the challenge of doing business on the Internet in organizational terms and how e-business initiatives affect existing organizational structures in such companies. For this, in a first moment, it was utilized the concept of “e-business-model", as a tool to better understand the phenomena of e-business adoption. The concept of e-business is preferred to that of e-commerce because it is more all-embracing. E-business refers to all business transactions on the Internet between a company and its suppliers, partners and customers, as well as inside the company. It were researched three case studies in the Brazilian automotive industry. In a first moment, it was identified if the enterprise has adopted any business model to conduct the e-business activities and it was identified the characteristics of the business model, when it was present. After this, it was identified what kind of organizational structure were utilized to implement the e-business activities, defined by a business model or not. The results show us different situations: one company has adopted a model based on supply chain integration, another has adopted one model focused in the consumer, with IT activities integrated whith e-business activities and another company hasn´t adopted any business model at all. There were differences among the organizational structures too: one has adopted a matricial structure, another any activities distributed by the firm and the third has adopted one coordinated structure under Marketing area.

Barros, Luisa Valentim 20 March 2014 (has links)
In recent years, a combination of events have contributed for solar photovoltaics raising adoption in Brazil. However, there are yet no available regulatory incentives or public policies to enable utilities participation without harming their financial equilibrium. As a result, the current study aims to identify new roles for Brazilian utilities that comply with smart grid emerging challenges. In an effort to identify examples of financial and regulatory incentives as well as new business models, North American solar photovoltaic experiences were evaluated. The effectiveness of three American business models for the Brazilian energy sector were discussed through SWOT analysis. The results indicate utilities main strengths and weaknesses compared to other energy market actors and also the opportunities and threats of each business model.

Collaborative consumption for a sustainable future: What gets consumers on-board? : An investigation of the consumers' willingness to adopt PSS and its determinants

Wessman, Anna January 2019 (has links)
The Circular Business Model (CBM) is one way to achieve a more sustainable future. Its goal is to reduce the use of natural resources which are becoming more scarce on our planet. The aim of the study is to investigate the consumer behavior and the determinants of the willingness to adopt Product Service System (PSS), one of the models of CBM. Through previous research, five main factors were identified: Economical Value, Flexibility, Trust, Desire to Own and Peer Influence. Furthermore, some literature argue that environmental awareness has an influence on the consumers’ choice of consumption. Therefore, this factor is considered and used as a moderating variable in the conceptual model. The primary data was collected through an online questionnaire and the hypotheses were tested through multiple regression analyses. Seven out of the twelve hypotheses were accepted. The study also concludes that environmental awareness does not have a high impact on the model. The environmental awareness did only have a positive moderating effect in the peer influence factor. It was determined in the study that economical value has the highest impact on the model.

Organizations, specifically startups, are situated in markets where the need to look into solving complex problems and the search for innovation are increasingly growing. In this context we highlight the strategic design as an approach that allows space expansion of the problem to be solved in the same way that increases the possibilities for innovation and brings project dimension of constant experimentation. This research aims to provide clues to analyse the contribution of the strategic design approach in the search for innovation, along with the use of the Business Model Canvas tool (BMC), within the reality of startups. The business environment of these companies was chosen considering organizations that drive innovation, embryonic and that have not yet reached the maturity of financial resources but with great economic importance in the job creation and technological innovation scene. Whereas Canvas, which aims to turn organizations more innovative and find new business formats allowing anyone to create or modify their business model was chosen because it is a user-friendly management tool and recognised in the current market organizations. Based on that, the research has a theoretical framework that supports the study, the environmental understanding to be searched and the implementation of the strategic design, through research-action, conducted at BoardShore startup, an e-commerce company that sells equipment for water sports, in Porto Alegre. Thus, we sought to examine the possibility of a deeper reflection about the possible contribution of strategic design, in conjunction with the implementation of the BMC as this tool aims to develop new business models. The results of this study show the importance of applying and adapting the design and management tools to a particular environment of the organization and the relevance of the strategic designer role in this design process.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an evolution from ubiquitous computing, which concept is the pervasive presence around us of a variety of smart objects and things. The IoT inspires innovative business models, which forces organizations across industries to adjust their strategies in order to succeed in digital market environments. Many companies have difficulties to capture the unprecedented complexity and to develop adequate business models to address digital innovation. In this way, this study aims to analyze how a business model to Internet of Things (IoT) products and services can be generated, identifying key components, opportunities and challenges that could be faced in such technological context. A qualitative approach, in an exploratory level, was chosen to be followed as well as a design science method, named as Design Research (DR). The DR was applied to instantiate a business model to an IoT product, having Business Model Canvas as guidance. In order to get empirical data and evidence, this study was conducted in an electronic solutions company, focused on home automation. Several activities were executed along with managers of this company, which included work sessions and semi-structured interviews. The purpose of these activities were understanding the problem to be addressed during the research and the motivation behind this initiative, designing a business model, and validating it and the research method applied afterwards. This research main outcomes suggest that a business model to IoT products and services could be generated from the Business Model Canvas, although there are specific elements that need to be considered, especially those related to technological matters and an integrated product and services offering. Besides that, there have been found eight opportunities and seven challenges concerning business model generation to IoT, which contributes as an enhancement to this topic literature and as reference to managers when conceiving new business models to IoT products and services.
