Student and Employer Perceptions of Career Expectations and Goals in Retailing

Grace, Marilu 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose was to investigate career expectations and goals of junior and senior fashion merchandising majors at North Texas State University and to compare findings with expectations for trainees of retail employers with executive training programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The findings indicated that most female students are planning their career goals in business for the next five years. Students are confused as to what employee benefits they might receive at the entry level. College recruitment is an important method of hiring executive trainees. Length of training programs vary from six months to three years. At the time of the study, trainees could expect a beginning salary of nine to ten thousand dollars.

Återförsäljarens mixed branding strategier : Beslutsfattande vid exponering av lyxvarumärken i fysisk butik / The retailer's mixed branding strategies : Decision making in exposure of luxury brands in physical store

Oberg, Alexander, Edvinsson, Michelle, Cekic, Lamija January 2023 (has links)
Based on a qualitative approach, the study has analyzed and discussed the retailer's decision making in the exposure and marketing of luxury brands, within the framework of mixed branding strategies. The purpose of the study has been based on exploring the approach, and how retailers apply marketing strategies and guidelines, as well as the retailer's responsibilities in physical store exposure and marketing. In order to answer the study’s purpose, two questions have been formulated: How do retailers work with mixed branding strategies while marketing luxury brands? What responsibilities do retailers take in relation to decision making in the marketing of luxury brands? The theoretical frame of reference is based on previous research on retailers, marketing, exposure and marketing decision making. The gathering of material has been based on qualitative methods such as observations and interviews with store employees, visual merchandising managers and a managing director. Furthermore, the study focuses on expanding previous research through parallel connections between collected material and theoretical frame of reference. The result identified four fundamental themes: mixed branding, purchasing, relationships and exposure linked with visual merchandising. The discussion section refers to the themes as components for exposure and the significance for retailers to follow up and maximize the potential for profitable exposure and marketing. The discussion further addresses the retailer's approach and responsibilities in decisions where it considers how retailers of luxury brands use the information and guidance based on the themes. Overall, the study has identified how responsibility and external guidelines correlate with relationships, as well as how the visual is ultimately exposed and produced in physical stores.

The Best of Both Retail Worlds: Analyzing the Clicks-and-Bricks Retail Model

Suzukawa-Tseng, Philip T 01 January 2015 (has links)
Since the internet became a new marketplace for buyers and sellers, the modernization of e-commerce brings into question whether online retailing can effectively replace traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Recent trends have highlighted the struggling business of physical retailers, yet many continue to operate while also having introduced an online sales channel along with pages on social media to increase engagement with customers. This study challenges the popular assumption that e-commerce is cannibalizing in-store sales opportunities, where online sales grow increasingly at the expense of the conventional method of shopping in brick-and-mortar stores. In examining financial and internet-related data of 50 major U.S. retailers from 2008 through 2013, I run panel data regressions to identify factors that contribute to the growth of in-store sales revenue and the proportion of online sales. My results indicate that retailers operating a clicks-and-bricks model do not suffer from channel cannibalization but may be forming a synergy across channels, as there are significant increases in measures regarding both physical and online retail operations.

Effects of the Gender of the Real Estate Agents on House Prices

Lu, Jizi 01 January 2017 (has links)
This paper studies the effects of the gender of the real estate agents on the closing price of residential, single-family homes in seven cities in east Los Angeles county from 2016 to 2017. We conduct two sets of regressions and find that contrary to previous studies, female listing agents outperform male listing agents. We also find that the gender of the buyer’s agents does not have significant effects on house prices. These results suggest that negotiation skills might not be the main key to explain the discrepancy of performance between male and female real estate agents.

Branded Windows : The Semiotics of a Window Display

Lakanen, Mariia January 2016 (has links)
The objective of this study was to analyze the visual communication of fashion brand identity through the concept of window displays. Window displays are often categorized as an aspect of a much larger concept of visual merchandising that should be seen as a crucial part of the entire marketing communications. Although the concept of window displays is not new, their effect on the overall brand image creation remains relatively unexplored. The interpretation of communication in a visual form is complex in nature, and this research approaches the matter from a semiotic perspective. The approach was selected due to its capability to explore deeper meanings behind visual objects. In this study, window display is understood as a crucial part of the sign system of a fashion store. Window display is commonly regarded as the starting point of the entire shopping experience, and therefore in the lack of previous research, it is a logical starting point for this study. The analytical framework of the study follows the thee metafunctions of semiotic modes as discussed in the Theory of the Grammar of Visual Design by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The analytical framework is then applied to analyze six different window displays produced by the same fashion brand. Findings of the research are discussed in terms of the three metafunctions of ideational, interpersonal and textual, and the purpose is to increase the knowledge of how window displays can be used to depict different relations between brand, people, places and things. In terms of brand identity communication, the most important contribution is to understand the complex relationship that is formed between the window (the brand) and its viewer (the customer). As a result, this research finds that the window displays are loaded with multiple visual cues all of which intend to serve the same purpose of brand identity communication. Clothing and accessories are the most salient elements used and they can be understood as the embodiment of the brand identity. Images of models and mannequins are used to address the viewers and create a specific relationship with them. The less salient elements in the window displays are used to support the message the brand is conveying through the display.

Retail Buyers Saleability Judgements: A Comparison of Merchandise Categories

Stone, Linda C. (Linda Carol) 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the saleability judgements of retail store buyers of women's and men's wear. A sample of 81 women's and men's wear buyers, representing two specialty stores and one mass merchandiser, was sent questionnaires. Principal Components Factor Analysis with Varimax Rotation was used to reduce the number of product, vendor and information source variables to eight factors. Three significant differences existed between the women's wear and men's wear buyers, verifying that not all retail buyers are alike. Results will benefit educators in preparing students to become more effective buyers, retail management can incorporate this same information into a buyer training program and apparel manufacturers can use the study in planning product strategies to retailers.

This study examines the organization, function, and role of public relations in Neiman-Marcus Fortnights. Fortnight is an annual October extravaganza combining cultural and community education with merchandising. Information was gathered by interviews with three people associated with Fortnight public relations. The public relations department follows general goals in planning Fortnight public relations activities. Audiences are not restricted. Public relations responsibilities are publicity, press relations, guest relations, community relations, and special events. Evaluations are made with respect to public relations activities of the previous Fortnight. Though public relations is of secondary importance to merchandising, the effectiveness of Fortnight activities would be improved with established objectives, specific audiences, and a formal means of evaluation.
