L’intégration des jeunes à faible capital scolaire : le cas de l'Hotellerie-Restauration / Integration of Young people with low educational capital : the case of the Hospitality and Catering sector

Montargot, Nathalie 21 October 2013 (has links)
This research explores representations of Young people with low educational capital implemented during their professional integration. This population consists of young people aged 16 to 30 years old, out of the school system and having a level of education equivalent to the vocational baccalaureate, a permanent challenge for sectors such as industry, construction industry or catering and hospitality. Neglect them can have a detrimental impact on the organization productivity, economic performance, climate of work and customer satisfaction.Different streams of research are used to build our conceptual framework. Thus, organizational socialization, interactionist theories (with the psychological contract and the Person-organization fit) and professional identity construction are taken into account.Research is anchored in the sector of hotels and restaurants which is characterized by poor conditions of employment and unfavorable remuneration, a turnover two times higher than other sectors and the use of economically and socially fragile young people.A qualitative study based on experts and practitioners, consultants working in local missions, young people, HRD and managers of the sector allows a typology and highlights the expectations. A statistical and semantic analysis of the corpus allows the identification of four profiles: the "discoverers", the "builders", the "spotters" and "the stressed" whose behavior (rational emotional), vision (instrumental / emotional / cognitive), relation to the sector (forced / voluntary) and position facing the customer, have specific characteristics. Our results show that the educational capital held during recruitment is not taken into account by the employer, while life skills previously acquired are particularly sought.Analysis of the expectations shows six categories of needs: financial support, recognition, work-life balance, evolution and meaning and highlights the importance of an inclusive HR policy meeting the expectations. The discussion emerged the need for better coordination organizational input/early socialization, a co-construction of the integration paths by different stakeholders as well as an improvement of the steering and evaluation of the integration process.

Åslund, Christina January 2011 (has links)
Secondary schools have for decades debated whether they promote social reproduction which is considered to generate the homogeneous student compositions. The gap between the academic programs and vocational education programs is considered to increase. What in recent years has appeared in research is that the gap is increasing most tend to be in the specific academic program, particularly in science. This paper's intention is to describe the science program at a local level and the pupils who were admitted to the science program autumn 2009 on the basis of an educational sociological perspective. The survey consisted of a census in which all students were given the opportunity to answer a questionnaire. The survey was compiled by the analytical program SPSS for capturing a multidimensional perspective of students' reasoning. The survey shows that students possess a lot of educational capital which had been examined from three aspects, however, in hierarchical order. Students who attend the scientific program, the municipality believes that the program is the program that gives students the best possible education in several respects. In particular, it appears that students think that the program prepares them for future higher studies paving the way for a future career.

Korhonen, Anja, Åberg Zingmark, Ida January 2016 (has links)
Physical inactivity is a growing concern among adolescents, which is the fundamental issue addressed in this study. The purpose of this study was to gain more knowledge about adolescents’ physical activity habits and the factors that influence physical activity. The study was based on a questionnaire consisting of 23 questions. The participants were 149 upper secondary school pupils between 15-19 years old from Östersund who studied both theoretically and practically oriented programs. Based on the World Health Organization [WHO] recommendations on physical activity the adolescents were categorized as active and inactive, and then compared with various background factors that previous research has demonstrated as being important determinants of physical activity. These factors were socioeconomic background, parental influence, sex and ethnicity. The results showed that most active adolescents are also active in sports clubs (p <0.05), has the highest final grade in the subject physical education and health in school year 9 (p <0.05), attends a theoretical program (p <0, 05), has a high educational capital (p <0.05), has a high sporting capital (p <0.05), is more motivated to physical activity (p <0.05) and have more support from their parents (p <0.05). The results was discussed by using the framework suggested by Bourdieu, habitus and capital.

Herdy, Anna January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how school meals are organized in a selection of Stockholm's secondary schools and to examine the relationship between school meals and the different parameters that indicate each school's symbolic capital and educational capital. By looking at the statistics from each school on the basis of the final grade average, percentage of pupils with foreign background and gender, I examine whether it is possible to see a relationship between how schools organize meals and which pupils attend the school.  In my study, I systematically went through each school's website and tried to identify how school meals at each school are organized. To increase the validity of the study, I have also conducted a questionnaire survey by mail addressed to school principals.   In order to analyse and understand my results and put them in relation to my current knowledge about the schools in my sample, I am using Bourdieu's theoretical tools that a given aid, both in methodological and analytical purpose. Based on Bourdieu's theories of symbolic capital, cultural capital and educational capital, I can understand and analyse school meals are organized and focused as part of schools' symbolic assets in competition with other schools.   The first part of the study shows that there are four different organizational models for school meals, fully equipped kitchen and canteen, heating kitchen and canteen, school meals in restaurants and school meal card.    In the second part, I have examined the relationship between the type of organization for school meals used and the symbolic resources available at the school. I can conclude from the results that it is difficult to find a correlation between the symbolic resources and the different categories. But even though it is not possible to see all the schools' symbolic assets equally clear, there are still some very telling examples. In many ways, these examples can be seen as polar opposites to each other based on Mikael Palme’s concepts ”goal rational” and ”education oriented” schools.

Olsson, Caroline January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines cultural and other symbolic capital amongst medical students in a Bourdian sense. Medical students at Karolinska Institutet, a Swedish medical university, were compared to four other prestige full educational programs in the Stockholm area. Investments in educational capital, media habits and other cultural investments were compered. The data was collected at an earlier stage at Uppsala University using a postal questionnaire. The data was strengthening with interviews with the medical students.  The medical students demonstrated that they had a lot in common with students from the other elitist education programs that was part of the study. However they also had an extra dimension that was not found amongst the other students and that was a sense of an altruistic thought, e.g. that they wanted to “do good” and that was the reason why they wanted to become doctors.

Vahlgren, Olle January 2024 (has links)
This essay explores the way in which priests and church-musicians choose music for different ceremonies such as funerals, sunday service, baptism and weddings. The questions at issue regard how the clerks personal preferences, the Swedish Church’s cultural heritage and the attending community contributes to the musical choice at large. Other complementing questions explore how different rooms affect what is seen as suitable music, and also how the clerks value live music compared to pre-recorded music in the halls of ceremony. The exploration and answering of these questions were done through interviewing both priests and church-musicians. In the analysis of the produced material mainly Bourdieu's concepts of taste, fields, illusio, habitus, cultural-, and educational capital were applied. To further grasp the intricate inner workings of the church-musicians and the priests reasoning when selecting music, such as emphasizing openness, inclusion and musical width, the study also give valuable insights in the significance of how the fields of the clerks interact with the field of the assembly, the cultural heritage of the national church and societal norms as a whole, most notably in regards to the selective struggle between tradition and renewal. The findings in this essay contributes to the academic field with new knowledge of how music is used in religious contexts to mediate theological messages and aesthetics. As such, this essay is more focused on the horizontal, rather than the vertical, aspects of how music is interacted with, thus shaping peoples expectations and perceptions of different rooms and of the church services. These aspects play a pivotal part in keeping the identity of the given community alive, and is therefore an important phenomenon to understand in regards to the Swedish Church.

I write, therefore I understand : A qualitative interview study on how written language can contribute to cultural capital

Camitz, Josefine January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate how the acquisition of written language can contribute to cultural capital with a focus on what that process means for the individual. The selection has been goal-oriented and aimed at people who have created change for themselves and achieved academic and/or professional progress. The study shows that when the acquisition of written language contributes to cultural capital and social mobility, it results in the individual experiencing a change in their habitus. A process that can challenge the individual's ability to experience belonging in the new middle-class contexts from a social and psychological perspective. It also affects the individual's previous relationships to family and friends. The study also shows that the acquisition of written language can have a therapeutic function for a child who has a social problem and is socially vulnerable. The study shows that cultural capital is developed by the individual's exposure to literature, need for expression and satisfaction in writing. Acquiring the written language contributes to an experience of maintaining autonomy and the ability to participate in and influence society.
