En himmelsblå höst : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys om etnocentrism inom svensk sportjournalistik

Silverberg, Oskar, Rosén, Robert January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to see how well newspapers manage to maintain their objectivity and balance when covering a Swedish team’s matches in an European tournament. We did this by doing a qualitative content analysis of the two biggest local newspapers, Sydsvenskan and Skånska Dagbladet, and the two biggest tabloids, Aftonbladet and Expressen – and their coverage of Malmö FF’s participation in the UEFA Champions League 2015. We analyzed all the post-game texts of the six games in the group stage – except for texts based on personal opinions, such as chronicles. The results show that the newspapers lose their objectivity and write more about the Swedish team and the Swedish players than the opponent team and their non-Swedish players. The result also show that the local newspapers put the focus on Malmö FF as a team, while the major tabloids focus on Malmö FF as being a part of Sweden and Swedish football. Last but not least the results also show that the ethnocentric and nationalistic attributes of the journalists play a major role in their writing.

Human rights and the problem of ethnocentrism

Etinson, Adam January 2011 (has links)
Despite its prominence as a pejorative term in moral and political philosophy, the phenomenon of ethnocentrism has escaped the focused attention of moral and political philosophers. Little sustained effort has been devoted to its in-depth analysis. This thesis attempts to fill in that gap in the philosophical literature, with a particular focus on the analysis of ethnocentrism as a problem, or rather a set of problems, facing the theory and practice of human rights. The thesis begins by drawing a core distinction between ethnocentrism as a moral phenomenon (i.e., a form of moral partiality), on the one hand, and as an epistemological phenomenon (i.e., a mode of judgment), on the other. After singling out the epistemological aspect of ethnocentrism as its main focus, the thesis argues for four interlocking claims. The first claim is that ethnocentrism represents an unwarranted mode of judgment, and thus an epistemic hazard that ought to be avoided if at all possible (Chapter One, §3). This claim is defended at length against the version of political constructivism advanced by John Rawls, which, by grounding political argument exclusively in ideas and values embedded in a common public culture, implicitly justifies a form of ethnocentrism (Chapter Two). The second claim is that moral argument cannot avoid ethnocentrism by grounding itself, as some have thought, in judgments upon which there is broad moral consensus, or rather by avoiding any appeal to judgments that are the subject of marked dissensus (Chapter Three and Chapter Four). Thirdly, the thesis argues that ethnocentrism is, if avoidable, only so to a limited extent (Chapter Six, §2). And fourthly, it offers an outline of how this limited form of avoidance might work (Chapter Five and Chapter Six, §3).

A Conjoint based study on meat preferences. The effect of Country-of-Origin, Price, Quality and Expiration date on the consumer decision making process

Mesanovic, Diana, Rubil, Dijana, Rylander, Beatrice January 2009 (has links)
This study will examine the importance of Country-of-Origin, Price, Quality and Expiration date, in the consumer decision making process for fresh meat. Country-of-Origin has earlier been investigated, however the research has been focusing on manipulating one single cue. With the recent scandals in the fresh meat industry, were animals being abused and expiration dates being changed, it is interesting to investigate how important the consumers find the four attributes; Country-of-Origin, price, quality and expiration date.In order to answer the research questions, and fulfil the purpose, the authors will use a mix of different data collection methods. Qualitative data will be gathered by performing interviews and quantitative data will be gathered by conducting a pilot study and an experiment. The data will be retrieved with the use of SPSS 17.0 and the conjoint analysis procedure. Country-of-origin has been found to be the most preferred attribute for consumers in their purchasing process for fresh meat, closely followed by expiration date. The consumer did find price and quality to be of importance, however the attributes were not found to be as important as Country-of-Origin and expiration date. As Country-of-Origin was found to be the most significant attribute for consumers in their decision making process, this indicates that the consumers are ethnocentric in their behaviour, i.e. they consider their own country and culture to be above others, which leads to a purchase of Swedish meat. It has also been found that the purchasing process of fresh meat is of great complexity, especially with the negative attention the fresh meat industry has induced.

Socialt arbete med ensamkommande flyktingbarn : En kvalitativ studie om hur socialarbetare upplever det tvärkulturella arbetet med ensamkommande flyktingbarn

Bilici, Seyma January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how some social workers in Sweden describe the social work with unaccompanied children. Emphasis was on the role of culture in social work with the unaccompanied children. I wanted to examine how the social workers describe their view on social work with unaccompanied. I also wanted to examine how the social workers describe their view at their own and the unaccompanied children’s cultural backgrounds influence on the social work with the unaccompanied. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four social workers. The empirical material was analysed based on the theories ethnocentrism and symbolic interactionism. The results of the study shows that both the social workers and the unaccompanied children’s cultural background effects social work. The social workers cultural background has a particular effect on the meetings with the unaccompanied children. The social workers capacity to fully understand the unaccompanied clients is limited for cultural factors.

Etnocentrizmo panaudojimas turizmo sektoriaus konkurencingumui didinti / Usage of ethnocentrism for the increase of tourism sector competitiveness

Stankevičienė, Gintarė 05 July 2011 (has links)

Building nation and self through the other : two exhibitions of Chinese painting in Paris, 19331977

Fournier, Anik Micheline January 2004 (has links)
This thesis investigates Western exhibition practices and the problems that arise when they involve cross-cultural encounters. Two exhibitions of Chinese painting in Paris that were co-planned by French curators and Chinese artists will serve as case studies in this regard. The first exhibition is Exposition de la peinture chinoise held at the Musee du Jeu de Paume in 1933. The second show is Quatre artistes chinoises contemporaines held at the Musee Cernuschi in 1977. Using archival material, I will reconstruct the planning of the exhibitions and reveal diverging French and Chinese agendas. An examination of the press reviews of the two shows will demonstrate that location is key in the public reception of an exhibition. The analysis of the encounter of self and other underlying the two exhibitions will lead to a probing of Western exhibition practices and bring issues of power, authenticity and identity-making to the fore.

Le "cosmopolitisme" de Valery Larbaud (1881-1957) : écrivain, critique et traducteur / The "cosmopolitanism" of Valery Larbaud (1881-1957) : writer, critic and translator

Auzoux, Amélie 23 November 2018 (has links)
Valery Larbaud’s “cosmopolitanism” is a presupposition that must now be sifted through a critical review. The complexity of Valery Larbaud’s work undeniably comes from his treatment of geographical, political, literary and linguistic borders. But to which extent can it be said that this “métis des lettres” – whose métissage still remains carefully calculated – welcomes the Other, or renews the linguistic and literary representation of the stranger? What are the revolutions or counter-revolutions of his cosmopolitanism, whose contradictory features react to contemporary intellectual environment? Larbaud’s cosmopolitanism has become a cliché in the exact photographical sense, offering nothing but an “index” of names or a “kaleidoscope” of images. I argue that it should undergo critical analysis, on the basis of a much more encompassing set of data. Substituting to in vitro approaches of Larbaud’s work taken under glass and out of context the more accurate nuance and movement of in vivo approaches, we aim at offering a thorough historical and critical reading of his work. Larbaud, whose hagiographic criticism has raised above men, is a man of his time, whose image, frozen on glossy paper, must give way to the most nuanced moving portrait.
