Eucharist and Anthropology: Seeking Convergence on Eucharistic Sacrifice Between Catholics and Methodists

<p>Eucharistic sacrifice is both a doctrine of the church and a sacramental practice. Doctrinally, it explains in what manner the sacrament is a sacrifice, or at least its sacrificial dimension; liturgically, it refers to the offering that is made in the church's celebration of the eucharist, that is, who and what is offered and by whom. Since the Reformation, Catholics and Protestants have been divided over of eucharistic sacrifice, and for most of its history after the death of the Wesleys, Methodism somewhat uncritically followed in the Protestant tradition. Now, after four decades of productive ecumenical dialogue, Catholics and Methodists seek to discern the points of convergence and divergence between them on this controversial doctrine. In short, where do Catholics and Methodists agree and disagree on eucharistic sacrifice? This dissertation is a work of systematic theology that draws from the insights of several related fields: liturgical theology, historical theology, sacramental theology, ecclesiology, and ecumenism. An investigation into what Catholics and Methodists have shared with each other to date in ecumenical dialogue serves to elucidate the state of affairs between the two churches. The traditioning voices of Thomas Aquinas and John Wesley provide instances of detailed teaching on eucharistic sacrifice. Aquinas' theology has continued to inform Catholic teaching, while Wesley's was largely forgotten in nineteenth century Methodism. His theology of eucharistic sacrifice anticipates significantly the convergence that the liturgical and ecumenical movements have achieved on this topic through their attention to the theology of the early church, yet only a handful of contemporary Methodist theologians have explored Wesley's theology of eucharistic sacrifice in detail, and fewer still from an ecumenical perspective. In recent decades, Catholic and Methodist churches have circulated official teaching on eucharistic sacrifice and made significant revisions to their eucharistic liturgies. An analysis of these texts demonstrates how each church currently articulates its doctrine of eucharistic sacrifice and celebrates it sacramentally. The analysis also allows for an assessment of the current degree of convergence between the two churches on eucharistic sacrifice. The conclusion is that, first, Methodism has begun to recover a strong doctrine of eucharistic sacrifice, and greater attention to its Wesleyan heritage can only strengthen it further. Second, the two churches share more on eucharistic sacrifice than is frequently appreciated; indeed, Methodism should recognize in Catholicism a doctrine and a liturgy with which it can fully agree. Third, eucharistic sacrifice necessitates a clearly-formulated ecclesiology, which is a topic in the dialogues where Catholics can continue to prompt Methodists for deeper reflection. Convergence on eucharistic sacrifice, if recognized by both churches, would constitute a significant step forward on the path to full communion between them.</p> / Dissertation

Darbo metodai: literatūros analizė, anketinis tyrimas ir analizė Magistrinis darbas susideda iš įvadinės dalies ir keturių pagrindinių dalių. Šio darbo pirmame skyriuje apžvelgiama ką Magisteriumas sako apie tikinčiųjų sąmoningumo svarbą, dalyvaujant Eucharistijos šventime, šventojoje liturgijoje, Eucharistijos ir Atgailos svarbą šeimos gyvenime. Antrojoje dalyje, pagal Bažnyčios dokumentus, apibrėžiama krikščioniškos šeimos samprata, jos tikslas ir uždaviniai, krikščioniškos šeimos evangelizacinė misija ir krikščioniškos šeimos tarnavimo žmonijai misija. Trečiojoje apžvelgta vaiko psichologinė ir religinė raida, tėvų ir mokyklos įtaka vaiko religiniam ugdymui, šeimos pastoracijos įtaka vaikų religiniam ugdymui. Ketvirtojoje šio darbo dalis nagrinėjamas tėvų ir vaikų požiūris į Eucharistijos šventimą, sąmoningumą dalyvaujant Eucharistijos šventime, jo ugdymą. The research purpose is to reveal what influence the family has for deliberate participation in the Eucharistic observance Research hypothesis: Poor family attention to the Christian life strongly influences children’ conscious participation in the Eucharistic observance. Research methods: the analysis of literature, questionnaire form and its analysis. The Master work consists of the introduction part and four main parts. In the first chapter of this work there is a review what is Magisterial saying about the importance of the consciousness, taking part in the Eucharistic observance, Saint Liturgy, the importance of Eucharist and Penance in the family life. In the second part, according the Church documents, there are defining the conception of Christian family, its aim and problem-solving, evangelistic mission and the mission of serving for people. In the third part of the work there are reviewing the children psychological and religious development, the influence of parents, school and family for children religious education. Holding Heaven in their hands : an examination of the functions, materials, and ornament of Insular house-shaped shrines

Since the nineteenth century, the provenances, functions, and defining characteristics of a group of Insular portable containers, commonly called house-, tomb-, or church-shaped shrines, have been of interest to a number of disciplines such as History of Art, Archaeology, and Museology. As nearly all Insular house-shaped shrines were found empty or in fragmentary states, their original contents are a continued point of scholarly debate. In response to these examinations and based in part on the seventh-century riddle on the Chrismal found in the Ænigmata of Aldhelm, bishop of Sherborne, this thesis proposes questions such as: what type of container is best categorised as an Insular house-shaped shrine, what were their original contents and functions, and do their forms and materials communicate any specific cultural message(s)? By engaging with the two core concepts of functionality and materiality, which are further informed through direct object handlings of select Insular portable shrines, this thesis examines the forms and materials used in their construction. Taking these questions and the historical conversation into account, this thesis draws on the terminology employed to denote sacral containers in Old Irish and Latin works, which include hagiography and penitentials, discussions on the Temple of Jerusalem within early medieval exegesis, depictions of Insular house-shaped shrines and analogous forms in stonework and other mediums, and antiquarian, archaeological, and anthropological accounts of the discovery of Insular house-shaped shrines to more fully examine the functions of these enigmatic boxes. In doing so, the place of Insular house-shaped shrines within early medieval art, both Continental and Insular, will be more fully outlined. Additionally, a working definition of what can constitute an Insular house-shaped shrine is developed by examining their materiality, form, and prescribed functional terms, such as ‘reliquary’ and ‘chrismal’. Finally, this thesis shows that the functions of Insular house-shaped shrines are best understood in an overlapping and pluralistic sense, namely, that they were containers for a variety of forms of sacral matter and likely were understood as relics themselves only in later periods, which modern antiquarians later used as meaning-making devices in their writings on the spread of the early medieval ‘Celtic’ Church.

En la primera parte se realiza una aproximación al concepto sw&#956;a y su relación con la Iglesia. La Iglesia como cuerpo con su unidad en Cristo en medio de la diversidad de los miembros. La segunda parte se realiza una aproximación al concepto koinonia y la relación de este con la Eucaristía como participación en el Cristo presente en la celebración y en el pan. In the first part an approach to the concept of sw&#956;a and its relation with the Church will be discussed. The Church as body with its unity in Christ in midst of the diversity of its members. In the second part presenting an approximation to the concept koinonia and the relation of this with the Eucharist as participation in the presence of Christ in the celebration and the bread is treated. Studying Eucharist as participation in Christ, the problems in Corinth will be the basis for the interrelationship between the Church and the Eucharist, presenting a mutual agreement of existence and experience. In the last part implications will be presented for the life in community and worship with the prominence of the significance of the application of koinonia and being Christ's body as much within the Church as beyond its borders and the practice of responsibility as Christ's body in the society and to history in relation to the areas of justice and dignity.

This study analyses the debate that took place after a letter about the eucharist, Fira Nattvard: brev från biskoparna till Svenska kyrkans präster och församlingar, was published by the bishops of the Church of Sweden, 2020. The aim is to map the discussion with a focus on two main themes while examining a number of articles published in Swedish magazines. The themes are 1. the understanding of the extent of the real presence and how to handle the bread and wine after the service has ended, and 2. the view on concelebration.    The results show that there are two main views on the extent of real presence in the debate. The first is a durationistic view where the real presence is still present after the service has ended, and the second is a cessationistic view where the real presence ends by the end of the service. In the question about concelebration the results show that there are arguments both for and against it. The arguments for concelebration are foremost about the ecumenical perspective of being able to celebrate together, the historical perspective and also the church handbook’s possibility in this matter. Concelebration is also seen as a sign of community where the whole congregation is taking part. The arguments against concelebration are that of institution narrative, that the mass should be celebrated as close to the first eucharist as possible and that concelebration should not be a method to go around the different view of gender of the minister celebrating the mass.

In this study it is not the author's aim to attempt to cover the field pertaining to the origin and development of the Eucharist. A vast number of competent works have been vrritten on the subject, but the primary purpose here is to examine the Eucharistic teachings of the Didache in the light of Canonical, early Christian, and non-Christian literature, in an effort to determine if the Didache presents the Eucharist (or Lord's Supper) in its original form as practiced in the primitive Christian Church of the first century. Further, we propose to show how the simplicity of the act was developed into a crystallized rite, or sacrament, by the time of the second century Church.

The reflection on the sacramental liturgy of the Eucharist on TV is in the historical context of this media, highlighting its concepts anchored to journalism, which is seen as the reason for every media action. In a first moment, the intention is to show the current reality of the TV considering that journalism has given in to the commercialization of information and, in addition, to highlight the concern about broadcasting the sacred liturgy in this sort of environment as well as its ethical consequences. Having the industrial period as the historical context from which TV emerged, the study shows the internal dynamics of this media, its production and relation with the viewers. In the second stage, the research provides the context of the sacred liturgy of the Church, showing fundamental concepts such as rite, cult, celebration, the Eucharist, the Table of God s Word, participation, sacraments and sacramentals, communion, communication, validity, identity, community, presence, assembly, time, space and others, coming from ecclesiastical documents of divine worship in communication. Em primeiro instante, a intenção é mostrar a realidade atual da TV diante do fato de que o jornalismo se rendeu ao espetáculo da mercantilização da informação, e evidenciar a problemática que isso significa para a veiculação da sagrada liturgia nesse ambiente, com as consequências éticas que decorrem desse fato. A partir do contexto histórico do período industrial que gerou a TV, o estudo apresenta a dinâmica interna desta mídia, sua produção e sua relação com os telespectadores. Mass magnified : the large missal in England and France, c.1350-c.1450

The eleven illuminated missals at the core of this thesis share a distinctive scale that sets them apart from the majority of other decorated missals. Their scale was a key factor in the visual and ritual experiences they offered their patrons and their earliest users. Missals made in the later fourteenth century and the early fifteenth century included some of the physically largest examples of this genre of book ever made. Containing the text of the late medieval Mass, and read by its priest during the ritual’s performance, they were essential components of the ritual that resulted in the physical embodiment of Christ in the Eucharist. Large missals were a distinctive variation of the Mass book. However, existing scholarship has not offered sufficient reasons for a wide-ranging phenomenon of large missal patronage and manufacture. This thesis argues that the scale of these books was a central rhetorical device that magnified their significance and reception. At the heart of this adoption of the large-scale format was the aggrandisement of the Mass itself, reaffirming its place as the central rite of the Christian Church and contemporary devotions about the ritual. Study of these eleven manuscripts suggests that their exceptional size and the treatment of their interior designs supporting their visuality were issues for this particular period. Explanations for the adoption of large Mass books are given by examining their visibility in the Mass, as part of what is termed here the ‘altarscape’. Having established this, this thesis offers reasons for why patrons and clerics used a cumbersome large format for the text of the ritual. The missals unmistakeably reasserted orthodox values in the face of challenges to conventional understanding of the Eucharist from those holding non-conforming views. Simultaneously, the emphasis on expanded proportions arguably reflects contemporary practices of commemoration where being remembered was an essential part of dying well. And finally, the interior and exterior scale of these books was used for new devotional themes, including the Virgin.
