Quotidian architecture : occupying the sidewalk

Comins, Duane Thomas 07 December 2012 (has links)
It is estimated that nearly two in three people will live in urban areas by 2045. The city is increasingly seen as a place of opportunity. It has become a receptacle for new social, cultural and economic strata. The urban environment is converted and mutated by everyday public performances. This condition becomes evident when the street is inhabited as a space that connects the workplace, the home and institutions. The built wall often attracts and establishes these new activities. It is here that conventional architectural typologies are challenged. This dissertation explores the notion of the wall in an attempt to reconfigure the sidewalk. A conceptual network of interfaces that contain infrastructure, public services and urban armatures is proposed. Within this context, it is argued that architecture should support these everyday performances as well as define a new spatial identity, within the urban environment. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Yrkesverksamma kvinnors upplevelser av smartphonens inverkan på dagliga aktiviteter / Working women’s experiences of how smartphones affect daily activities

Nilsson, Maria, Hallberg, Josefin January 2020 (has links)
Aim: The aim of this study was to develop knowledge about the experiences of how smartphones influenced the daily activities of working women. Method: 15 women in working age were interviewed, using a semi-structured design. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Sentences were taken out, condensed and coded and in the end resulted in four categories. Results: i) Smartphone: Resource or limitation, ii) Smartphones and parallel activities, iii) Smartphones in social activities, iiii) Reachable and connected online in activity. The results showed that smartphones had an impact in women's daily activities. The smartphone was an integrated part of women's activities and could both be taking time from some activities but also be an important part of its performance. Many times it could make activities easier to perform and more effective, in both work- and leisure activities. However it could affect the person's focus and interrupt their performance of activities. The participants found that the smartphone could, consciously or not, be detrimental to the performance of tasks that have been subjectively more important for them. Conclusion: In women's daily activities, smartphones could both have a supportive impact as well as limitative in the performance of activities. The smartphones' functions serve to facilitate greater cohesion with society, since it is more reliant on everyday technology. Norms and ethical principles are successively growing on how smartphones are adequately used in peoples' lives. This study showed that smartphones had a great impact in women's daily activities.

Parental guidance in occupational therapy: Promoting the participation of children with autism spectrum disorder in everyday life activities - a scoping review

Enroth, Petra January 2021 (has links)
Abstract   Aim This study aimed to determine what is known from the existing literature about parental guidance during occupational therapy to promote the participation of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in everyday activities. Method  The scoping review methodology was used to gather existing information on the topic. The following databases were used for searches: The Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and MEDLINE.  Results Ten studies were included in this study, as they met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of the selected studies were thematically organised. Three key elements emerged from the results that promoted the participation of children with ASD in everyday life activities: increased knowledge and awareness of parents; new practices and changes in everyday life; supporting and strengthening parenting.  Conclusion  The findings of this study suggest that parents have a central role to play in promoting child participation. Parental guidance is an ideal way to promote the participation of ASD children in everyday activities, as parents are involved in children’s daily lives and influence children’s natural environments. The results of this study can be utilized in occupational therapy practice for the implementation of interventions. Keywords: ASD, children with ASD, daily activities, involvement, occupational therapy, parental guidance

Dynamika každodenního života v dialogu s Emmanuelem Lévinasem / Dynamics of Everyday Life in Dialogue with Emmanuel Lévinas

Jandová, Tereza January 2017 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to look at the topic of everyday life from a dynamic perspective. The definition of everyday life that this thesis stands upon, i.e. the presence of a subject in the world with the other(s) outlines also two main sources of its dynamics: the world and the other. The essential aim of this thesis is to show that the different attitudes towards the world and the other in the works of Husserl and Lévinas consequently influence the understanding of the everyday life as such, as well as the requirements it imposes upon the subject. The chapter dedicated to Husserl presents his concept of the world as a horizon, the irreplaceable position of perception in our access to the world and the creation of the other within the subject itself. On the contrary, Lévinas stresses the separation of the subject and he understands the world and the other as inherently belonging to this never-ending process. The motive of dependence and responsibility of the subject for the other belongs to the most significant differences between the two philosophers. Whereas Husserl proposes us a subject in the world which he accesses via perception and in which he encounters the other, Lévinas shows us subject that is born to the pre-reflexive and intersubjective world from which he first has to...

Dělníci autorského práva. Agentura DILIA v období tzv. normalizace ve vzpomínkách tehdejších zaměstnanců / Copyright workers. The agency DILIA during the time of so-called normalization in memories of its employees

Burman, Markéta January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis, I present Dilia, the Theater and Literary Agency, at the time of so-called normalization from the perspective of its employees. On the basis of available documentation, the organization's history from the beginning of 1949 until 1990 (a time of revolutionary societal changes) is mapped. Then I describe the organizational structure and different scope of work of each department and afterwards I turn back to the history again, this time with the focus on historical events, especially during the time of so-called normalization. I present the events as they were related to corresponding changes in directorship. In this thesis, I discover on the background of the era how the former employees recall their everyday life. I recall the employees' recollections of everyday life, working and private, in the context of the era. These recollections include forced membership in social organizations. Ultimately, they assess their their lives the vantage of today.

Finding Presence of the Absent : To those who are soon forgotten

Liljebäck, Emelie January 2020 (has links)
This paper concerns the ordinary stories. It is about the forgotten and the things that have gone unnoticed. It is about female history and is a political exploration into what and who is allowed to take space. I focus on everyday life in a domestic space, where I see these things that are discarded, often are overlooked and not talked about. I explore society from a kitchen point of view with a grandmother’s life in focus. It is a story about everyday rituals in the home, which are of an important cultural deed. The objects support her in these rituals, and they also help me to tell. I investigate the memorial space and with my artistic practice I create a room to remember those who are soon no longer with us. In this project I work within the craft-field of corpus. I use the tradition of corpus as a method of working but also as a tool to discuss my subject. As corpus is talking about class and hierarchies it creates a counterweight to my project.

Graffiti and street art in mobile landscapes

Ståhlberg, Saga Li January 2022 (has links)
Drawing from de Certeau (1984), in this thesis I investigate graffiti and street art as part of the everyday visual landscapes. The city of Stockholm has gone from zero tolerance towards all forms of street art to now including the art form as a strategy for creating a so-called attractive city. In this thesis, I aim to examine street art and graffiti in relation to Stockholm´s mobile landscapes. The theoretical framework builds on mobility and landscape theory. I argue that if we are to better understand the world we live in, the concepts of mobility must be understood both in terms of its physical and social implications (Cresswell, 2006). Using a qualitative approach, interviews, document analysis, and ethnographic methods have been used to gather data. By analysing discourses and statements by artists, officials, and housing companies, I demonstrate how graffiti and street art moves between different expressions in Stockholm. Furthermore, I discuss the perspectives of artists who are engaged with their bodies to produce the visual landscape we live in, and how their bodily mobilities affect the outcome of the landscape of Stockholm. I argue that there is a paradox between mobility and immobility in the use of street art to create safe environments. The positioning of these concepts as opposites reveals how Stockholm stad and housing companies use the mobile in graffiti and street art, to create something static, attachment to place. This thesis thereby contributes to the societal and academic debate concerning mobility and the understanding of how the visual landscape is created.
